    Unveil anti-harassment action plan

OVER 300 prominent Hollywood female artistes, including actresses, agents, writers, directors, producers and entertainment executives have formed a strategic alliance to fight systemic sexual harassment in Hollywood and in blue-collar workplaces nationwide.

Called ‘Time’s Up’, the initiative includes a legal defense fund, backed by $13 million in donations, to help less privileged women — like janitors, nurses and workers at farms, factories, restaurants and hotels — protect themselves from sexual misconduct and the fallout from reporting it.

There is also legislation in plan, to penalize companies that tolerate persistent harassment, and to discourage the use of nondisclosure agreements to silence victims.

Part of the plan is a drive to reach gender parity at studios and talent agencies that has already begun making headway, and a request that women walking the red carpet at the Golden Globes speak out and raise awareness by wearing black.

The movement was announced on Monday with an impassioned pledge of support to working-class women in an open letter signed by hundreds of women in show business, many of them A-listers. The letter also ran as a full-page ad in The New York Times, and in La Opinion, a Spanish-language newspaper.

Some of the women who have established ‘Time’s Up’ include actresses America Ferrera and Eva Longoria; lawyer Nina L. Shaw; actress Reese Witherspoon; producer Shonda Rhimes; and lawyer Tina Tchen.

“The struggle for women to break in, to rise up the ranks and to simply be heard and acknowledged in male-dominated workplaces must end; time’s up on this impenetrable monopoly,” the letter says.

New York Times reports that the group is one answer to the question of how women in Hollywood would respond to cascading allegations that have upended the careers of powerful men in an industry where the prevalence of sexual predation has yielded the minimizing cliché of the “casting couch,” and where silence has been a condition of employment.

Time’s Up also helps defuse criticism that the spotlight on the #MeToo movement has been dominated by the accusers of high-profile men, while the travails of working-class women have been overlooked.

This was highlighted in November, when an open letter was sent on behalf of 700,000 female farmworkers who said they stood with Hollywood actresses in their fight against abuse. Time’s Up members said the letter bolstered their resolve to train their efforts on both Hollywood and beyond.

“It’s very hard for us to speak righteously about the rest of anything if we haven’t cleaned our own house,” said Shonda Rhimes, the executive producer of the television series “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “How to Get Away With Murder,” who has been closely involved with the group.

“If this group of women can’t fight for a model for other women who don’t have as much power and privilege, then who can?” Ms. Rhimes continued.

Other ‘Time’s Up’ members include the actresses Ashley Judd, Natalie Portman, Rashida Jones, Emma Stone, and Kerry Washington.

In the same vein, another group, 50/50by2020, is pushing entertainment organizations and companies to agree to reach gender parity in their leadership tiers within two years.

Another group is devising legislation to tackle abuses and address how nondisclosure agreements silence victims of sexual harassment. “People settling out in advance of their rights is obviously something that can’t continue,” said Ms. Shaw, a prominent lawyer whose clients have included Lupita Nyong’o and Ava DuVernay.

Time’s Up has also been urging women to wear black at the Golden Globes, taking place this Sunday, to use the red carpet to speak out against gender and racial inequality, and to raise awareness about their initiative and the legal fund.

“This is a moment of solidarity, not a fashion moment,” Ms. Longoria said. A vast majority of the women who had been contacted and planned to attend the ceremony pledged to participate, she said.

“For years, we’ve sold these awards shows as women, with our gowns and colors and our beautiful faces and our glamour,” Ms. Longoria said. “This time the industry can’t expect us to go up and twirl around. That’s not what this moment is about.”

Time’s Up was formed soon after The New York Times reported in early October that the producer Harvey Weinstein had reached multiple settlements with women who had accused him of sexual misconduct.

“According to Miss Blessing Joseph, she has suffered terribly in the hands of the aforementioned couple who delight in dehumanising her regularly.

“The exploitation came to a halt when Mrs. Isioma Ezeofor’s temper got the better part of her and she emptied a kettle of hot water on the poor girl, scalding her skin in the process.

“A good Nigerian, who wished to remain anonymous, called the police to the matter. Both husband and wife are being interrogated at the Gender Section of the Command. The couple would be charged to court at the end of investigation.”

  • Widow accuses Ekiti lawmaker of sexual assault, physical brutality

Widow accuses Ekiti lawmaker of sexual assault, physical brutality

    •It’s a frame-up, says lawmaker

The Ekiti State International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has demanded the arrest and prosecution of a member of the House of Assembly, Dare Pelemo, for alleged sexual harassment and physical assault of a widow, Mrs. Mercy Ilesanmi.

But Pelemo denied sexually harassing and assaulting Mrs Ilesanmi.

The lawmaker was accused of fondling the breasts of the woman on September 6 at the Assembly complex.

Mrs. Ilesanmi said she raised an alarm but the lawmaker mobilised thugs to beat her.

The brutality, she said, took place in the Office of Majority Leader Mr. Tunji Akinyele, where she lodged a complaint on the alleged sexual harassment.

She said the hoodlums tore her clothes.

Ekiti FIDA Desk Officer Mrs. Kemi Atitebi said the organisation received the complaint against Pelemo but the legislator shunned the invitation to defend himself.

She said: “FIDA Ekiti received the complaint of sexual harassment and assault against Dare Pelemo and the complainant is Mrs. Ilesanmi, that she was assaulted and stripped naked on the premises of the Assembly Complex.

“FIDA wrote a letter to invite the respondent for us to hear his side of the story and to mediate in the matter. The woman is a widow and mother of children and her dignity has been violated for the fact that she was stripped naked.”

Narrating her ordeal, Mrs. Ilesanmi said: “I came to visit a member representing my constituency, Samuel Omotoso but he was not around.

“On my way out, I met Pelemo and we  exchanged pleasantries. Immediately, he fondled my breasts and I asked him what was the meaning of that. I am a married woman for that matter, and I don’t like how he touched my breast.

“He now said that I am an enemy of government, that I am not supposed to come to the Assembly. I now asked him, is that the reason why you are touching my breasts, a married woman for that matter? I challenged him that this is too much.

“I went to report the matter to Akinyele and I met the Clerk in Akinyele’s office with two other visitors. He was on phone but I waited.

“Before I knew what was happening, Pelemo came in with some miscreants and they started beating me and destroying things in that office, asking what I was doing in the Assembly Complex.”

Mrs. Ilesanmi’s lawyer, Adeoye Aribasoye, said he has forwarded a petition on the assault and sexual harassment to the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Chafe.

Aribasoye said: “Our petition is receiving the attention of the commissioner of Police.  Besides, FIDA in Ekiti is also investigating the case and I believe that soon, an action will be taken on the matter.”

Pelemo accused the woman of “attempting to frame him up and destroying his name.”

Pelemo, who is the House committee chairman on Security, said Mrs. Ilesanmi did not wear visitor’s tag when she visited the Assembly Complex on September 5, which prompted him to challenge her on her mission.

The lawmaker accused Mrs. Ilesanmi of working as an agent of the senator representing Ekiti South, Mrs. Biodun Olujimi, who is no longer in the good books of Governor Ayo Fayose and leadership of the Assembly.

Pelemo said: “It is not true that I touched her, I did not touch her breasts but I suddenly saw a petition from FIDA last Friday but I had travelled to my hometown, Ilasa-Ekiti, after which the FIDA people called me and I told them that I would be coming back on Monday.

“It was not as if I ignored FIDA, she is trying to frame me up and destroy my good name. She is being sponsored by some people but I will still honour the FIDA invitation.”

  • Lagos upgrades 40 PHC Centres to cater for sexual assault case

Lagos upgrades 40 PHC Centres to cater for sexual assault case

    …Trains Health Workers

In a renewed effort to ensure that victims of all forms of sexual assault receive adequate medical assistance, the Lagos State Government has upgraded 40 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the State to cater for all related cases.

This is just as the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Primary Health Care Board, has stepped up efforts to implement the already launched the Sexual Assault Standing Order and Sexual Assault Evidence Examination Kit also known as rape kits.

Coordinator of DSVRT, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi who spoke at a recent training session for health workers of PHCs, said the Centres have been empowered to render 24-hour service, laboratory testing, HIV Counselling and Testing, and Maternal and Child Health Services.

She said participants at the training were drawn from 10 areas including Agege Local Government Area (LGA), Orile Agege Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Ajeromi Ifelodun LGA, Ifelodun LCDA, Apapa LGA, Apapa Iganmu LCDA, Badagry LGA, Olorunda LCDA, Ibeju Lekki LGA and Lekki LCDA.

She said the continuous trainings and upgrade of health facilities was in furtherance of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s desire to ensuring that all survivors of sexual assault, irrespective of class or means, can receive comprehensive medical care at no cost.

She recalled that the rape kits, also known as Sexual Assault Evidence Examination Kits were launched in 2016 and are currently available at all comprehensive PHC Centres.

“The Rape Kits contain the necessary instruments used for evidence examination some of which include microscope slides, saline water, swabs, materials for blood samples, comb, paper sheets for evidence collection such as clothing fibres and hairs, nail pick, gloves. The documentation forms which include the consent form and Patient History/ Sexual Assault History are also included in the rape kit,” Vivour-Adeniyi said.

She expressed optimism that the training would ultimately improve the quality and documentation of evidence collection for sexual assault patients.

According to her, the training was organised by the Lagos State DSVRT with technical support from United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

“In the unfortunate case of a sexual assault, members of the public are advised to go to the closest comprehensive Primary Health Care Centre to receive optimal care,” the DSVRT Coordinator said.

  • Five schoolboys charged with sexual assault

Five schoolboys charged with sexual assault

Five pupils of Ireti Grammar School (IGS) in Falomo, Ikoyi, Lagos, were yesterday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for alleged sexual assault.

They were accused of forcing themselves on a female pupil on May 4 on Norman Williams Street, Ikoyi and willfully damaging her skirt.

The boys, with ages between 16 and 17, pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Patrick Adekomaya granted them N500,000 bail with two sureties each in the like sum. The sureties, he said, must be civil servants.

But a representative of the Office of the Public Defender (OPD) held a watching brief for the complainants during the pupils’ arraignment by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The pupils are standing trial on a four-count charge of conspiracy, unlawful assembly and gross indecency.

The charge marked E/25/2017 alleged that the offences contravened Section 35, 44(1) &(4), 134 and 412 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate directed that the case file be sent to the DPP’s office for advice and adjourned till June 14.

On Wednesday, Lagos State Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni said they would be prosecuted.

The police chief said: “Four of them will be taken to juvenile or family court, but one of them, who does not fall into the category of children, will be arraigned in open court.”

A Facebook user, Michale Matthew, posted a story on her page that she saw two female pupils being harassed and molested by their fellow male pupils, who had just completed their senior secondary school examinations.

Matthew described how the boys chased the girls in Obalende, tearing up the skirt of one of the victims with a pair of scissors.

According to her, two of the boys attempted to force themselves on the girls to the cheers of other boys.

  • Plumber held for ‘sexual assault’ of daughters

A 42-year-old plumber, Idowu Lasisi, has been arrested for allegedly molesting his daughters.

Lasisi was brought to the Police Command at Ikeja yesterday following his 15-year-old daughter’s claim that he sexually penetrated her three times.

The suspect, it was gathered, started the molestation with his 19-year-old daughter who fled their Ketu, Lagos residence when she could no longer bear it.

It was gathered that his wife, Labanke left him because of the alleged incestuous act.

Lasisi was said to have turned to his 15-year-old daughter after his wife and eldest daughter left the house. He allegedly gave her N500 each time he slept with her.

But the suspect denied the allegation, claiming the victim framed him up because he scolded her.

A source said: “The victim was brought by her mother to the station and we have sent her for check-up. The mother said she left her husband two years ago, when she discovered that he was sleeping with their eldest daughter.

“The woman is a trader and she left her three children behind. When the older daughter couldn’t stand the thing, she ran away from home and no one knows her whereabouts.

“According to the younger girl, her father started coming to her one night last year and he gave her N500.  She said there were times she would fight him off but that he succeeded in having sex with her three times. Out of frustration, she stopped going to school.”

Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni said the victim has been taken to the Mirable Centre for medical examination. Investigation, he said, was ongoing.
