  • Lagos handles 4,035 rape, child abuse cases in one year

Lagos handles 4,035 rape, child abuse cases in one year

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday said in the last one year it handled a total of 4, 035 cases ranging from rape, child abuse, sexual assault, sexual abuse, defilement, divorce, matrimonial issues and child’s custody and maintenance, just as it vowed not to shy away from prosecuting perpetrators of domestic violence crime no matter how highly placed in the society.

The State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, who disclosed this during a press briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa on the activities of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) in the last one year, said government, through the agency, equally handled a total of 192 cases.

Out of the 192 cases, Kazeem said the government handled 89 domestic violence cases, 62 defilement cases, 18 rape cases, 6 attempted rape, 10 child neglect and 7 child abuse cases, while 92 cases are presently being heard in court.

Kazeem said that the State Government under the administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has a zero tolerance for issues relating to domestic violence and child abuse and would not relent until the scourge is reduced to the barest minimum.

He said agencies of government, including DSVRT, Office of Public Defender (OPD) and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), among others, have been mandated to ensure that while perpetrators of the act are brought to justice, victims of domestic violence are given succor towards their rehabilitation.

“As regards provision of shelter for victims, the Ministries of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and Youth and Social Development as well as strategic partners NGOs have played key roles in ensuring that victims were evacuated to a safer environment of shelter homes.

“All the victims of sexual assault received medical attention from Mirabel Centre and State Hospitals, and so far, 50 of such cases were charged to court,” he said.

He said the essence of the press briefing today aside giving account of efforts of the State Government in the one year, it was also a means to send a strong message across that the government would not relent until the scourge is completely stamped out.

“As we all know the issues of gender violence, violence against children and all forms of inhuman treatment against the less privileged has been a very critical issue for Governor Ambode. Right from when he was sworn in, he had said that this issue was going to be something he would pursue with passion and diligence. He has since then given support to the DSVRT, OPD and all other related agencies including the Police Force to fight this scourge in other that it should be eliminated.

“Let me sound a note of warning here that no matter how highly placed you are in the society, if you commit any domestic violence crime, Lagos State will go after you and prosecute you in court,” the Attorney General said.

He assured that the State Government would continue to build on its recent efforts and step up its campaign efforts to put the issue of domestic violence on the front burner.

To this end, he said the DSVRT would on Friday, June 3, hold a free clinic for victims of domestic violence, rape at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa Secretariat, while they can seek counselling with trained professionals via their hotline on 08137960048.

  • Alleged sexual assault at Queens College: Panel lacks evidence to indict teacher

The Ministry of Education, said the investigative panel into alleged sexual molestation on a female student of Queens College, Ikeja, Lagos could not establish any evidence to indict the accused teacher.

The Minister of State for Education,  Prof Anthony Anwukah, who briefed newsmen on Friday in Abuja, said the mother of the victim failed to appear before the committee to prove her case.

It will be recalled that Anwukah had on March 22, set up a committee to investigate the alleged sexual molestation of a student of the college.

He said that the ministry would take appropriate actions following the recommendations of the committee.

“The Investigation Committee did not establish any credible evidence against the accused teacher, considering the fact that Mrs Chinenye Okoye remained unidentified, faceless and inaccessible despite the committee’s best efforts and assurances to protect her identity and that of her daughter.

“Consequently, the Investigation committee finds it difficult to recommend disciplinary action against the accused teacher as the complainant failed to come forward to prove this weighty accusation.

“The committee could not establish any cover up of sexual molestation by the management of Queens College.

“The Federal Ministry of Education notes and accepts all the recommendations of the committee and will take actions as appropriate,’’ he said.

The minister asked anyone with information that could lead to the identification of the alleged victim or her mother or with any credible and substantiated evidence to approach the ministry.

  • Panel submits report on sexual assault claim at Queens College

Panel submits report on sexual assault claim at Queens College

The Federal Government yesterday received the report of the panel, which probed the sexual molestation allegation at Queens College, Yaba, Mainland, Lagos.

The five-man panel was constituted last month to probe the allegation that a teacher, Mr Olaseni Oshifala, sexually assaulted an unnamed Junior Secondary Two (JSII) pupil.

Her mother, who made the allegation on a blogger’s site, did not also give her name.

The panel members were not named.

Minister of State for Education Anthony Anwukah, who confirmed receipt of the report in an interview with reporters in Abuja yesterday, said the ministry would make its position known soon.

Anwukah said: “I set up a committee as soon as that thing came up and the committee has been working and they have met their time frame. That is the report. The ministry will now look at the report and in the next couple of days be able to take a final action on that thing. The report by the committee I set was given to me this morning.”

Anwukah also said the government would review the current education curriculum to embrace technical education.

He explained that it was planning to include technical education and skill acquisition in the curriculum of primary and secondary schools because the current curriculum had not served Nigeria well.

  • PTA clears Queen’s College teacher of alleged sexual assault

PTA clears Queen’s College teacher of alleged sexual assault

THE Queen’s College Parents Teachers Association (QCPTA) has absolved a teacher, Mr Olaseni Oshifala, of sexually assaulting an unnamed pupil.

The PTA described the report of the sexual assault as a hoax based on its investigation.

It told the school’s old girls’ association to stop defaming Oshifala.

Speaking with reporters at the Military Chapel in Jibowu, Yaba, Lagos Mainland, yesterday, the PTA Chairman, Mrs Beatrice Akhetuamen, said the facts provided by the complainant did not tally with anybody’s data in the school, adding that the investigations the old girls claimed to have conducted to indict Oshifala was based on sentiments not facts.

She said the PTA would stand by the victim if she identifies herself.

“Let her come out with her facts, we promise, we will stand behind her and fight for her. We are emphasising this because we have a common goal as parents. For now, we have not seen her and we continue to say it is false. Not only based on her refusal to show up, but also based on facts, Mr Oshifala teaches Biology, not Integrated Science. I, as the PTA chairman have never smelt alcohol on him. Her daughter’s name is not in any of the school’s registers. Even on the said date that the accuser said she visited the school, we checked the visitor’s register and her name was not there. Not even the first name, Chinenye nor the second name, Okoye,” she said.

The PTA boss said nobody had been molested in the school, stating that QC parents were no fugitives to cower before the management.

Chairman, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), QC Chapter Mr Abiodun Oladejo added: “The facts don’t add up and people have been approaching the issue wrongly. Based on the report she put on social media, the said event occurred in October, but visiting day was actually on November 14. Also, we have security that parades the entire school every night and the report at the said date of the assault, says there was no incidence. Everything was cool and calm. We believe this is just a political fight but we don’t want them to drag our children’s school’s name in the mud. We want our children to be proud of their school.”

  • Queen’s College girls defend teacher over sexual assault claim

Queen’s College girls defend teacher over sexual assault claim

WAS a pupil sexually assaulted by a teacher at Queen’s College, Yaba, Lagos Mainland?

This is the puzzle the school is battling to unravel, even as Senior Secondary Three (SSS III) pupils abandoned their mock examination yesterday to protest that such an incident never happened.

Last weekend, Olorisupergal.com, a blog run by Tosin Ajibade, ran the sexual assault story, quoting  Chinenye Okoye, who claimed that her daughter, a Junior Secondary Two (JSS II) pupil, was abused by her teacher, Mr Olaseni Oshifala.

The story, which has since gone viral, also claimed that Oshifala, who teaches Integrated Science, was being protected by a vice principal, who allegedly told Okoye that Oshifala “is untouchable.”

The protesting pupils demanded that the school gate be opened for them to go and join another group of protesters who claimed that they were taught by Oshifala.

They described the allegation against him as false.

Workers and Chairperson of the Parent/Teachers Association (PTA) Mrs Beatrice Akhetuamen, also denied the allegation.

The pupils’ protest delayed the Biology paper for the Southwest Zonal Mock examination organised in preparation for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).  The girls, bore placards with inscriptions: “No Mother, No Child, No Case!”, “Haters at work, free Mr Seni”, “No Seni, no A’s”, “He didn’t do it,” “It is a set up”. They chanted: “No Seni, no biology”.

Their teachers’ efforts to send them back to their classes failed, as they chanted: “Open the gate”; “Open the gate”. They returned to write their examination following a call by Mrs Madueke, a director in the Federal Ministry of Education, who urged the Head Girl, Angel Tony-Ativie, to prevail on her classmates to end the protest.

In an interview with The Nation, Tony-Ativie described the allegation as baseless, saying: “The allegation against our Biology teacher is not true; because most of the facts are baseless.  Mr Oshifala does not live in the boarding house; he is not an Integrated Science teacher; he teaches SS1-SS3 Biology.  I have known him for six years; he has taught me for three years.  He is our chief maintenance officer so the only time he is able to move to the boarding house, with the permission of the principal, is to check if the facilities are functioning.  He leaves the boarding house around 9 or 10pm.”

Another pupil, Unoma Omenyi, president of the Students’ Representative Council, said the story was maliciously generated to create bad publicity for the school.

“This is our teacher; this is someone that taught us for three good years.  We have known this man since JSS1 and we know he is not capable of something like this.  Every Saturday we have Biology lessons; this is why Queen’s College exist because we can proudly say we can write Biology and have A1 in WAEC.

“I believe this is a publicity stunt to bring down the image of the school and the image of our respected teachers.  I just want to say they should leave our school and our teacher alone,” she said.

Omenyi said it was unfair to crucify Oshifala when those accusing him have failed to come forward.

“There is no girl; there is no evidence against him.  Because nobody has come up to say, ‘oh, I was raped’, ‘oh, I was molested.’ If there is no girl, there is no mother, then why are we accusing a man falsely when there is no evidence against him?” she queried.

One of the protesters outside the gate, said: “Oshifala was my teacher.  I said I did not want to go to school again; he encouraged me.”

Another man said: “Oshifala taught me and today, I am a student of the University of Lagos.  They are lying against him.”

Mrs Akhetuamen said Oshifala might have been targeted because of his record.

She said she made repeated calls to the number said to belong to Okoye, but got no response.  But, when she used the App, True Caller, the number turned up a different name.

When some reporters called the number, one woman, who gave her name as Tope, picked the call (she was identified by True Caller on another phone as “Toyin Flask”).  She said she had no relationship with Queen’s College and had no daughter studying there.

Mrs Akhetuamen said a committee had been set up to investigate the issue. The panel comprises the School Based Management Committee, PTA, senior members of staff and police. She declined claims that the PTA or the college management was not responsive.

She said: “The attention of the PTA has been drawn to online reports of sexual harassment said to have taken place at Queen’s College, Yaba, Lagos.  Upon hearing the reports, the school authorities swung into action even though we are yet to receive any official report, oral or written from any parent or student to that effect.”

The PTA chair faulted the claim that the alleged victim was molested when she went out of the hostel at night, saying pupils cannot leave the dormitory because the gate is locked and manned by a security guard.

  • Ministry probes pupil’s sexual assault claim at Queens College

Ministry probes pupil’s sexual assault claim at Queens College

The Federal Ministry of Education (FMoE) has launched a probe into the sexual molestation allegation against a teacher in Queens College, Lagos.

Some directors from the ministry, The Nation learnt yesterday, were in the school on Saturday to verify a pupil’s claim that she was sexually molested by her teacher, Mr Olaseni Oshifala.

The School Based Management Committee (SBMC) met yesterday with the ministry’s officials on the matter, which has gone viral on the social media.

In the school yesterday, some workers were seen discussing the issue as they headed towards where the SBMC was meeting.

“Where are you? Come now, SBMC wants to see all of us. They want to have an interview with us,” a worker told the others on phone.

Also yesterday, old girls of Queens College, from 1956 till date, also met in the School Hall on the matter.

A senior member of teaching staff, who did not give his name, told The Nation that there were inconsistencies in Chinenye’s claim of sexual molestation.

He said contrary to her claim, Osifala teaches Biology to senior secondary pupils and not Integrated Science/Basic Science at the junior level.

The source claimed that Oshifala does not live in the school and could not have been on the premises late at night as claimed by his accuser.

He also refuted claims that new security guards employed by the school were harassing students.

The source, who refuted the story via his Whatsapp account, described it as the work of a mischief maker.

He said: “Six reasons why the news about Oshii might be bad belle and half-cooked mischief.

“Oshii does not live on the compound; he does not teach integrated science or basic science; he has no business being in the boarding house around the time mentioned except there is emergency; D. Lami Amodu – PQC could not have left such a sensitive matter uninvestigated; the new security guards had not been engaged as at December when the last Parent Teachers Association (PTA) meeting was held; there has not been any report that the new security guards are harassing the girls.

“I am not a solicitor for Oshi but the facts as presented by the ‘Mrs Chinyere’ (the pupil’s mother)are far from the truth.”

Called for his comment, to refute the allegations, the embattled Osifala promised to return the call, but he failed to do.

The principal did not pick her calls nor respond to our reporter’s text messages.

  • Native doctor arraigned over alleged rape

Native doctor arraigned over alleged rape

A native doctor, Babatunde Ajisoloye, was on Friday charged before an Ikeja High Court for alleged sexual assault and rape.

Ajisoloye whose age and residential address were not given, however, denied the two-count charge.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ajisoloye had no legal representation in court.

The prosecutor, Mrs A.B. Awosika, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Aug. 10, 2014 at Marvina Hotel in Abule-Egba, a suburb of Lagos.

Awosika said the defendant sexually assaulted a woman (name withheld) by removing her clothes and rubbing an unknown substance on her body.

According to her, “The defendant proceeded to have an unlawful sexual intercourse with the victim without her consent.”

She said that the offences were in contravention of Sections 258 (1) and 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

NAN reports that Section 258(1) states that, ‘’any man who has unlawful sexual intercourse with a woman or girl, without her consent, is guilty of the offence of rape and liable to imprisonment for life.’’

Justice Kudirat Jose ordered that a probono counsel should be provided for Ajisoloye and adjourned the case till March 9 and March 10 for trial.
