  • Peter Adesina:  banging in goals and loving it in Seychelles.

Seychelles are 198 on current FIFA ranking and while some may argue it is the last place to consider playing professional football, former City of David ace Peter Adesina is not bothered about that.

For the former Calabar Rovers player scoring goals and enjoying his game is the most important thing.

The 28-year old midfielder who plies his trade with Seychellois champions, Cote d’Or, has netted 12 goals still counting but is not one to make noise about it.

“I played in Nigeria for a long time notably in the second-tier (Nigerian National League) with City of David (COD) Club and Calabar Rovers. After a short stint in Benin, I was due to return to Nigeria until this opportunity to play in these beautiful islands came, and I grabbed the chance with both hands,” he reflected.

Adesina recalls he needed some time to adapt with the climate especially upon arrival in 2017, but he managed to overcome. helping Cote d’Or to runner-up spot in the Seychellois top flight.

Cote d’Or players celebrate after winning the President’s cup

The following season, the club based in Praslin, the second biggest Island in Seychelles, moved a step further winning the national title championship, with the Nigerian netting 12 goals in all competitions.

He had to fight for his place as one of the four foreigners at the club for the three slots per club according to the regulations of the Seychelles Premier League. Others foreigners in the club are Uganda’s Tonny Kizito and Jonah Randriamisaina of Madagscar. It is apparent that Adesina is enjoying his sujourn in Seychelles and appreciates the support he is getting from all and sundry.

“It has been a privilege to get the chance to showcase my talent and I’m grateful for the club management and coaches as well as the other partners and the whole community of Praslin where the team is based for all the support. I will always strive to give my best for the club,” Adesina promised in a chat with CAFonline.

Cote d’Or will take on Anse Reunion in continuation of the Seychelles First Division league on October 31

  • Eagles round off AFCON qualifiers beat Seychelles 3-1

Nations cup bound Super Eagles Friday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba rounded off the qualifiers with a 2-1 defeat of Seychelles. The defeat implies that the Pirates conceded six goals in two legged encounter with Eagles managing to score only one goal.

Though the Eagles could be said to be unimpressive considering the quality of their opponents the Ahmed Musa captained side nonetheless managed to seal a 3-1 victory with the 90th minute goal scored by late substitute Moses Simon as the best goal of the match

Odion Ighalo had converted a penalty in the 35th minute to hand Eagles the first goal only for the Pirates to equalise few minutes later capitalizing on miscalculation by goalkeeper Kenneth Uzoho.

Kingley Onyekweru however lifted the Eagles again in the 50th minute and late substitute Moses Simon proved that he was indeed a good material when he produced the icing on the cake just few minutes after being introduced in the pitch.

The Match appeared to have given Coach Gernot Rohr an opportunity to experiment new play pattern. The German tactician paid more attention to operating through the middle as opposed to usual wing play.

Ahmed Musa known for coming in through the flanks this time was pulled into the middle perhaps to coordinate in the absence of John Obi Mikel.

The team will now focus on shaping up for the Nations cup in June, with friendly match against Pharaohs of   Egypt on Tuesday at the same venue.

As for Seychelles, they proved to be the underdogs of the group. The Pirates unbelievably conceded basketful of goals in the course of the qualifiers with three goals for and 25 goals against.

  • Pre-Eagles Clash friendly: Ethiopia U23 hammer Seychelles 4-0

Indications that visiting Seychelles will be praying and hoping for a respectable defeat as opposed to victory in Asaba emerged Tuesday when the Coach Gavin Jeanne tutored side lost back to back friendly matches aimed at shaping up for the Asaba showdown.

The team which has been camping in Addis Ababa took on the Ethiopia under 23 team and lost the match by a lone goal.  A rematch was arranged three days later with the coach making a few adjustments, but that did not remedy the situation as the Ethiopia under 23 side this time, handed their opponents a 3-0 defeat as if to debunk the saying that thunder does not strike twice in a place.

A disappointed Coach Gavin Jeanne blamed his team poor performance on poor officiating and the sending off of two of the players striker Perry Monnaie and Don Fanchette in the opening half hour which forced the side to struggle for a greater part of the game playing with nine men.

“We played a bit better but it was not a fair game as two of our opponents’ goals should never have stood as the official was biased and we had two players sent off and we also struggled with the altitude, “he told the media

The team we gather will complete their training in Ethiopia on Wednesday before heading to Nigeria for the final African Nations cup group E match against Super  Eagles on Friday. Seychelles occupy the last position in group E with just one point in five matches

  • Rohr 23: No Seychelles challenge for Mikel, Iheanacho

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has decided there is no need to stress team captain John Obi Mikel over the forth coming AFCON qualifier against Seychelles and the friendly match against Egypt respectively.

Rohr who is looking to parade a formidable team at the 2019 Nations Cup in Egypt released a 23-man team for the two matches on Monday leaving out the Super Eagles captain who only recently joined Championship side Middlesbrough after quitting Chinese super league side Tiajin Teda.

The decision is not unconnected with the need to allow the former Chelsea star stablise in his new club where he has already made an instant impact.

Also left out of the squad is embattled Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho.  The former Manchester City ace has been struggling to maintain a regular place at the King Power Stadium, starting most of the times from the bench.  Teammate Wilfred Ndidi who has been enjoying regular playing slot at Leicester however made the squad.

Ndidi it will be recalled missed the last qualifier against South Africa following a caution card.

The tie against Seychelles is a mere shape up match with Eagles already qualified for the Nations Cup.  In the first leg played in September last year in Seychelles, Eagles recorded an emphatic 3-0 victory with Odion Ighalo, Chidozie Awaziem and Ahmed Musa on target.

Samuel Kalu who made Rohr’s 23-man team will however need to ginger his spirit at a time when efforts are still being made to rescue his mother Madam Ozuruonye Juliet Kalu from Kidnappers den.

His case is like a replay of the experience Mikel had during the World cup in Russia when he had to endure the pain of his father’s kidnap to play

Nigeria’s match while efforts eventually yielded fruits as security agents rescued his father.

Here is a list of players invited for the Seychelles and Pharaohs ties billed for  22nd and 26th March respectively

  • Magu: Looters now stash funds in Seychelles, South Africa, Niger, Ghana

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, yesterday said looters now stash illicit funds in Ghana, Egypt, Cameroon, South Africa, Niger Republic, Morocco and other African countries.

He said the preferred destinations for looters had traditionally been the United Kingdom, United States, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Seychelles, but they are now expanding fast to African countries.

Magu made the disclosure at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)  between EFCC and its Nigerien counterpart, the High Authority Against Corruption and Relating Crimes( HALCIA), in Niamey.

He said: “From available intelligence and our investigations, it has been revealed that looters from Nigeria now go to Ghana, Egypt, Cameroon, South Africa, Equatorial Guinea, Niger Republic, Morocco, Seychelles and so on, to stash their loots.

“This has led to sharp increase in the number of Nigerians buying properties in African countries.

“Nigerians even go to the extent of changing their names and acquiring the destination countries’ international passports in collusion with corrupt public officers in their countries of residence in order to hide their identities and evade detection,” he said, adding that, “the fight of the EFCC against looters’ safe havens is total.”

The EFCC boss further disclosed that his visit to Niger was part of his ongoing tour at mobilising international effortsto deny looters safe haven abroad.

He said: “We have already visited Ghana and Cameroun, today we are in Niger Republic and we will continue to reach out to other preferred looters destinations in Africa and beyond. Interestingly, the efforts of the Nigerian Government to trace, recover and return assets stolen from Nigeria coupled with our increased advocacy to discourage safe havens have begun to yield results.

“It is my conviction that our collaborative efforts will go a long way in eliminating safe havens. In fact, this is in tandem with renewed global commitment by countries to shut their doors to stolen funds.

“I also want to call for conscious measures to sanitize and strengthen the legal framework so as to make it difficult for looters to transfer illicit funds to Niger Republic for investment or whatever purpose.”

Magu called on the global community to redouble its efforts towards strengthening the mechanisms for dismantling safe havens for proceeds of corruption.

He also called on the international community to ensure the return of stolen funds and assets to their countries of origin.

According to a statement by the Acting Head of Media and Publicity of EFCC, Tony Orilade, the MoU will strengthen the collaborative efforts between the EFCC and its Nigerien counterpart.

Section seven of the MoU captures how the parties will exchange information, including those which are necessary to achieve its objectives.

According to the section, “The parties will exchange information in accordance with this Memorandum of Understanding in conformity to the relevant laws of Niger and Nigeria relating to the protection of privacy and confidentiality.”

To help the Commission take its fight against corruption to Nigerians looters who have found safe haven in Niger Republic, Magu made a five-point appeal to the President of Niger Republic, which are as follows:

    (i) Identifying huge cash in the financial system owned by Nigerians to enable us find out if they are looted funds/proceeds of crime.

(ii) Identifying the numerous properties owned by Nigerians including the details of the owners in order to enable the Commission ascertain if such Nigerians acquired the properties from looted funds/proceeds of crime

(iii) Stopping moves by persons who plan to move funds at this period through the usual medium to destabilize the political stage in Nigeria.

(iv) Increased clamp down on Nigerians who are involved in cyber-crime and handing over their details to us for further necessary action.

    (v) Assisting the EFCC in the arrest of persons on the wanted list of the Commission who absconded to Niger Republic due to the free movement granted to citizens of the ECOWAS states.

The EFCC boss praised President Muhammadu Buhari for his support to the Commission, noting that “Nigeria is ready and willing to partner with international agencies and individual countries on bilateral basis to confront crimes and corruption.”

While meeting with the parliamentarians, at the Assemblee Nationale, Magu told the second Vice President, Mohamadou, that, there was the need to rework existing legislations in Niger to help strengthen anti-corruption fight in the country.

He also noted the need for the country to domesticate the United Nation’s Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) in order to make its meaning and impact bear on the lives of the country’s citizens.

While decorating the Nigerian Ambassador to Niger Republic, Ambassador Haliru and all the embassy staff with the EFCC lapel, Magu urged them to acknowledge the anti-corruption fight as a collective one.

“Whether you are at home in Nigeria or in the Diaspora, you need to make your contribution. Add your voice to the crusade against corruption. The fight is real. Don’t also forget that corruption is fighting back, but together, we shall win,” he said.

Ambassador Haliru, in turn, praised the EFCC boss for his zeal and passion for the job. “We are hearing and seeing all your achievements in the fight against corruption. We are praying to God Almighty to give you good health and long life to confront the corrupt”.

For the President of HALCIA, Abdourmane Gousmane, there is no better time than now for stronger collaboration between Nigeria and Niger Republic in the fight against corruption.

“We are ready and willing to partner with Nigeria. Nigeria has the experience and the human capacity and with President Muhammadu Buhari, who is a renowned anti-corruption icon, we have no choice than to leverage on Nigeria for capacity building in taming the corruption monster,” Gousmane said.

One of the side attractions of the visit was Gousmane’s presentation of a horse as a special gift to Magu.

  • Eagles record 1st AFCON 2019 victory hit Pirates 0-3

It was a stress free outing for Coach Gernot Rohr and his technical crew on Saturday as the Super Eagles won their first Group E match, in the AFCON 2019 qualifiers beating Seychelles 0-3 in 93 minutes.

The Eagles enjoyed for what could pass for a cruise control maintaining   72% possession to Pirates 28 all through the encounter.

The goal feast for the Eagles started with a super strike by Ahmed Musa who was equally impressive at the recently concluded World cup in Russia.  Prior to the match the Pirates coach Jeane Garvin cautioned his team mostly made up of non professional footballers to keep a tab on Musa and company as they will not hesitate to do damage, and indeed they did.

Odion Ighalo who was lampooned in some quarters following his poor run in Russia, converted a penalty.

At the end of the first half the Eagles were already two goals up and looked as though they were seeking to re-enact the 5-1 defeat which the Pirates had earlier suffered in the hands of

The Mediterranean Knights, in the opening group match.

The match could easily be dubbed a tea party for the Eagles, with the only minus being the injury to Chidozie  Awaziem who was quickly replaced by Semiu Ajayi who is making his debut for the senior national team.

Oghenekaro Etebo and Henry Onyekuru all had their time replacing Kelechi Iheanacho and Samuel Kalu respectively

  • Seven Eagles That Will Be Missing Against Pirates

Super Eagles Coach, Gernor Rohr will on Saturday in Victoria attempt to return to a winning way after Nigeria’s early exit from the just concluded 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The Eagles are bottom-placed in their Africa Cup of Nations 2019 qualifying group after losing their first Match to South Africa at home.

The German tactician will be parading a squad who were in action for the national team in the 21st FIFA world Cup tournament missing for the  must win AFCON away match on September 8 in Seychelles .

With less than 72 hours to the kick of the match, several key players like Shehu Abdullahi, Tyrone Ibuehi, and Captain John Mikel Obi had been ruled out because of injury while Victor Moses had retired from National Team Football week preceding Eagles Camp.

Nigeria will also miss the services of three vital players of Alex Iwobi, William Troost-Ekong and Ola Aina as they are not at Seychelles camp after picking up injuries while with their respective clubs.

The Seychelles game is a must win for the Super Eagles and the available player would need to step up as another defeat or dropped points in Seychelles could spell doom for the Super Eagles chances of making the 2019 AFCON having already lost at home to South Africa.

Rohr will be picking from the array of professional Nigerian internationals already in camp for the fixture as the bubbling camp is swelled with the likes of; Ahmed Musa, Ogenyi Onazi, Odion Ighalo, Etebo Oghenekaro, Leon Balogun, and Jamilu Collins.

Others are; Onyekuru, Omeruo, Uzoho, Semi Ajayi, Samuel Kalu, Ndidi, Iheanacho, Awaziem, Nwakali, Bryan Idowu, Simeon Nwankwo, Joel Obi Ikechukwu Ezenwa, abd Daniel Akpeyi.

Eagles are two days old at their training camp already. They had a good recovery walk around the beach in front of our Savoy Hotel camp, Victoria Tuesday and also did Foot-Volley game. They were on the turf  for full training time on Wednesday. They also had good cool beach experience to round off the session.

  • Mikel pulls out of Sept.7 Seychelles tie

Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has pulled out of the September 7 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers between Seychelles and Nigeria in Victoria.

NationSport scooped that Mikel called up the team’s manager Gernot Rohr to excuse himself from the crucial game, citing the fact that he had not fully regained the required fitness level needed to play the game. Mikel also informed the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, to disclose his reasons for opting out of the Seychelles game.

Mikel joins the long list of injury-hit players such as Tyronne Ebuehi and Shehu Abdullahi, both of who play at the right back of the Eagles’ defence line, especially at the 2018 World Cup held in Russia, where Nigeria was eliminated in the group stage.

Former captain of the Nigeria U-17 and U-20 team Musa Muhammed has been invited to replace Ebuehi and Abdullahi. Abdullahi now plays for Croatian side HNK Gorica.

Asked if Victor Moses will be listed among those to make the trip to Victoria against Seychelles on September 7, NationSport’s usually dependable source revealed that the body and the manager have agreed to respect Moses’ decision, but he didn’t rule out moves to sit with the Chelsea star to evaluate why he chose to quit international football at such a young age of 27.

  • 2019 AFCON: Sofoluwe cautions against focusing on SA

2019 AFCON: Sofoluwe cautions against focusing on SA

Following the draw for the 2019 AFCON billed to hold in Cameroon, former international Yisa Sofoluwe has cautioned Super Eagles against concentrating all attention on South Africa while underrating Libya and Seychelles.
He noted that the era of assessing the capability of a team on paper or even pedigree are gone for good as no team today can be regarded as push over.
Nigeria’s failure to qualify for two editions of the continental diadem he said, should serve as enough lesson to take every opponent seriously and regard every match as a final.
He however expressed confidence in the ability of the current Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to achieve the required results especially if the usual distractions are kept at bay.
“You don’t talk about an easy draw anymore because there are no cheap teams any more. So my advice to the Super Eagles is to ensure adequate preparation and take every match and every opponent seriously.

Sometimes it is the team you think that are incapable to turning the table that do so when it matters most. We should not say South Africa are known rivals let’s concentrate on them to the exclusion of others because that would be a big mistake,” he said
After missing the 2015 edition in Equatorial Guinea and the 2017 edition which kicks off tomorrow in Gabon, most soccer fans in the country who reacted to the draw said it would be unthinkable for the Super Eagles to again miss out of the 2019 party, insisting that the disappointment of the past should in fact ginger the team to qualify ahead of others without the usual struggle and gnashing of the teeth.
