Seychelles officials arrive for Wolves, FCMK

Referee Bernard Camille and his compatriots from Seychelles were expected in Nigeria yesterday for Saturday’s CAF Confederation Cup second round, first leg match between Warri Wolves FC and DR Congo side, FCMK.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has already perfected plans for visas at the point of entry for the officials, as Nigeria has no embassy in the Indian Ocean Island. Hensley Danny Petrousse, Jean Joseph Felix Ernesta and Nelson Emile Fred will serve as 1st Assistant, 2nd Assistant and Reserve Referee respectively.

Wolves, who ejected Dedebit FC of Ethiopia in the first round on a 2-0 aggregate, have a bigger task against the Congolese, 6-3 winners over Ahly Shandy of Sudan.

In other CAF Confederation Cup games this weekend, Orlando Pirates of South Africa take on CF Mounana in Gabon, while Young Africans of Tanzania host Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia.

ASEC Mimosas of Cote d’Ivoire are away to Onze Createurs of Mali, and Swaziland’s Royal Leopards, a team of security operatives and part-timers, hope to continue their fairy tale run against AS Vita of DR Congo, last year’s CAF Champions League runners-up.

Zamalek of Egypt host FUS of Morocco in an all-North African clash, as is the fixture between ASO Chief of Algeria and Club Africain of Tunisia.

In the CAF Champions League, four tantalizing all-North African clashes take the cake. Champions Entente Setif play away to Raja Casablanca of Morocco, and Al Merreikh of Sudan host Esperance from Tunisia. Moghreb Tetouan of Morocco, who sent packing Kano Pillars of Nigeria, are at home to Al Ahly of Egypt, while MC Eulma of Algeria take on CS Sfaxien of Tunisia.

Smouha FC of Egypt, conquerors of Nigeria’s Enyimba, are away to AC Leopards of Congo, while Stade Malien are home to TP Mazembe of DR Congo.

Nigeria’s Supersand Eagles will play host nation Seychelles, Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire in Group A of the 2015 African Beach Soccer Championship in Seychelles this month. The competition takes place April 14-19.

At the Draw Ceremony inside the CAF headquarters, 6th October City, Egypt on Sunday, CAF General Secretary Hicham El Amrani was assisted by Member of CAF Executive Committee and chairman of the Organising Committee for the African Beach Soccer Championship, Ahmad, from Madagascar. Ghana, Morocco, Senegal and Madagascar, will play in Group B.

It means that Nigeria will play the host nation in the opening match of the tournament – as happened to the U-17 team at the African U-17 Championship in Niger Republic and the U-20 team at the African Youth Championship in Senegal earlier this year.

The Audu Adamu Ejo wards will be to glad to avoid bogey team Senegal in the group phase, but Cote d’Ivoire have improved tremendously over the years and Egypt qualified after a 16-6 aggregate hammering of Tanzania in the only qualifying round. The Ivorians turned back Mauritius 18-6 on aggregate.

Supersand Eagles finished third at the Power Horse Invitational Tournament in Durban last month, beating Ghana and South Africa but losing to Senegal, and then reached the African finals after Libya withdrew from the race.

Ghana reached the finals with a 22-8 aggregate trouncing of Uganda; Morocco bombed Djibouti 16-1 in an only leg played in Casablanca; Madagascar steam-rolled South Africa 9-3 in two matches in Durban and; Senegal sailed into the finals after Mali withdrew.

The Nigerian team is presently at a training camp in Badagry and will depart for Seychelles on Friday.

Ebola: Kunle, Gabriel Afolayan isolated at Seychelles

Alot has been said or written about the Ebola Virus, which is currently ravaging some parts of Africa.

Consequently, as part of efforts to fight the scourge, some yet-to-be-infested countries have started taking pre-emptive measures. Only recently, Saudi Arabia suspended the issuance of pilgrimage visa and by extension, any flight from West Africa coming into the Arab country.

Following that lead, though in a more subtle manner, the Republic of Seychelles has started screening visitors from West African countries. As a result, top Nollywood filmmaker and actor, Kunle Afolayan and his brother, actor Gabriel Afolayan, came under thorough scrutiny, recently.

According to Afolayan, an award-winning filmmaker, “We landed in the Republic of Seychelles safe and sound. Gabriel and I were isolated from the other Kenyan crew that went we us and we were made to sign plenty forms because we came from West Africa (Ebola region). Gabriel didn’t have his yellow fever card, so he had to do a test the following day and take the result back to the health section of the airport. Thanks to SBC for the rescue and warm welcome,” Kunle stated.

Kunle and his brother are in Seychelles to shoot a movie.
