Seyi Law reflects on 20 years in comedy industry

Comedian Seyi Law has shared his two-decade journey in the comedy industry, highlighting the sacrifices he made to achieve success.

In an interview with HipTV, he recounted how he left his uncle’s home in Orile to live with his aunt in Ebute Metta, Lagos, in search of better access to performance opportunities.

Driven by determination, Seyi toured several universities, including Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan, Olabisi Onabanjo University, UNILAG, and LASU, where he performed at social events to hone his craft.

Reflecting on his career, he said, “It’s been 20 years, and there have been a lot of sacrifices to get to where I am today. But when success comes, you most times forget the sacrifices. Like they say, a day of joy erases years of sorrow.”

“One of the things I did when I joined the comedy business was to leave my comfort zone. That time I was staying with my uncle in Orile, and I left there to stay with my Aunty, who lived in Ebute Meta. It wasn’t so much of a comfortable place, but I went there to have proximity to certain places.

“As we were growing, I had called Emeka Smith, who was my friend, to make certain moves. One of them is to leave Lagos and go to universities to seek opportunities to perform at their different social events. I remember we left Lagos to go to Obafemi Awolowo University, and those times we didn’t really have a place to sleep, and couldn’t afford a hotel.

“We slept in study theatres and looked for where to take a shower in the morning, strolled around during the day, came back, and repeated until we got the opportunity to perform at different places. We did the same thing at the University of Ibadan, Olabisi Onabanjo University, UNILAG, and LASU. One time at a LASU law dinner, 9ice came to perform, and I had to back up for 9ice.”

Inspired by veteran comedian Ali Baba, Seyi Law said he decided to mentor younger talents, providing them with support and opportunities.

He added, “I also decided to bring a lot of people to my comfort zone because I learnt that from Ali Baba and his ability to bring young comedians together.

“I also decided to do that as soon as I got my own apartment, a room, and a parlour. I had several comedians who came to live with me, even when I moved to Ikorodu. They’re all big boys now.

“For some musicians, my shows outside Nigeria became their avenue to get their first visas. It was probably my show that gave Kizz Daniel his first visa, Adekunle Gold, and Arole, who always talks about it”.

If Tinubu can’t fix Nigeria, no politician can – Seyi Law

Stand-up comedian Seyi Law has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating that if Tinubu can’t transform Nigeria, no politician can.

Despite facing criticism and losing patronage from some Nigerians, Seyi Law said he is committed to his stance and confidence in Tinubu’s leadership abilities.

In an interview on Tejubabyface show, Seyi Law said that enduring the current challenges under Tinubu’s leadership is preferable to temporary comforts that might jeopardise Nigeria’s future.

He advocates for constructive criticism and engagement rather than blind animosity towards the government.

The comedian also compares Tinubu’s performance favorably to other politicians, such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, stating that they wouldn’t have performed better if they had won the presidency.

He said in part: “Some Nigerians hate me for supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. They don’t even support my shows anymore. You might not support me today but I will want to be 70 and 80 and I see my children enjoying the benefits of the sacrifices I have made today.

Seyi Law’s support for Tinubu is driven by his hope to see the benefits of the president’s reforms in the future, particularly for his children. He stated that he would be much happier when his children enjoy the fruits of Tinubu’s policies, even if it means facing criticism in the present.

  • Why I’ll never support Peter Obi, by Seyi Law

Why I’ll never support Peter Obi, by Seyi Law

Stand-up comedian Seyi Law has declared he will never support Peter Obi’s presidential ambition, citing the Labour Party candidate’s failure to rein in his supporters, known as the Obidient movement.

Speaking during an interview on the Tejubabyface show, Seyi Law alleged that members of the Obidient movement attacked his wife and children over his public support for President Bola Tinubu.

The comedian said the incident deeply hurt him and crossed a line that he considers unforgivable. He criticised Peter Obi for refusing to acknowledge or condemn the actions of his supporters, adding that such silence solidifies his decision.

Seyi Law further described any group that suppresses opposing views as cult-like, insisting that freedom of thought must be respected in a democratic society.

He said: “I don’t feel down at all because when you talk too much, I swear for you. One of the good things that God has done for me is that my anger doesn’t last long.

“Personal anger for me doesn’t last long. The only place it lasts long is when you leave me and attack my children, mother, and wife.

“The moment you cross that boundary from me to my children, mother, and wife — there is no forgiveness.

“That is why there is nothing on earth that Peter Obi can do that will make me support him. They (Obidients) attacked my children and my wife.

“As long as Peter Obi will not call them to order and he keeps denying that they are doing that, he will never get my support.

“Let Peter Obi wear the garment of Jesus Christ today — he will never get my support. Hate or love me, my personal way of life is between me and God.

“Any organization that does not support free thinking is a cult.”

You saw an existing value, invested, made money – Mr. Macaroni debunks Seyi Law’s claim

Popular comedian Mr. Macaroni has publicly denied claims made by fellow comedian Seyi Law regarding their past collaborations, expressing disappointment over what he described as “unnecessary lies.”

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Macaroni revealed that Seyi Law first reached out to him in December 2019 with a project idea, which they went on to develop together.

At the time, Mr. Macaroni said he had already built a strong online presence with nearly 100,000 followers — a factor he believes attracted Seyi Law to the partnership.

He added that Seyi Law clearly saw value in their collaboration and benefited from it, particularly when he sought Mr. Macaroni’s support to promote his show just two months later.

Mr. Macaroni described the situation as heartbreaking, stating that it was unfortunate he had to publicly correct the narrative.

He wrote: “Ehya Uncle Seyi, you shouldn’t be doing this to yourself. I am ashamed that you are doing this and it breaks my heart that I also have to respond to you this way to correct some of these unnecessary lies.

“Firstly, I never asked your cousin to reach out to you on my behalf. How could he have brought me to ask for your support in 2020 when it was you who reached out to me in December 2019 telling me you had an idea that would do so well if we worked on it together.

“Bear in mind that I was already a viral sensation at this time with the daddy wa contents having almost 100,000 followers which is why you reached out with the idea. I don’t deny that collaborating with you on that content was a big deal for me for which i showed love and respect and reciprocated when you also called upon me to help you promote your show.

“Secondly, contrary to your claim that you agreed to support me when Tolu brought me to your Mom’s birthday in January 2020, you invited me yourself for the birthday celebration and I honored you with my presence.

I remember taking pictures with some of your guests who were happy to see me and we all had a great time.

“Thirdly, Before I posted the content I created with you, I already had over 100k followers with lots of viral contents including collaboration with other Stars e.g Lateef Adedimeji and Broda Shaggi to mention a few. Lastly, you shared this idea with me and we worked on it together to make the content.

“You making it seem like I was one nuisance that ambushed you at your mother’s birthday party who you decided to help is far from the truth! You saw an existing value, made an investment and cashed out when you called me to help promote your show 2 months after.

Happy 20th Anniversary Egbon. May God bless you and keep you.”

How a gifted shoes monitored me – Seyi Law

Stand-up comedian Seyi Law has revealed how he was being spiritually monitored by a friend who gifted him a pair of shoes.

According to Seyi Law, the discovery was made during a vigil in 2016 when God allegedly revealed to him that an object in his home was being used for spiritual surveillance.

Acting on the revelation, Seyi Law said his wife located the pair of shoes and burnt them.

On his X handle, Seyi Law wrote: “I wish it was only a mirror they could use to monitor someone sha. One must be very careful of gifts.

“On the 2nd March 2016, I had a vigil in my room, and as I prayed, God told me there was something in my house that they were using to monitor me and I found out it was a pair of shoes someone gifted me. My wife took it out and burnt it. Prior to that day, I always doubted people who said God spoke to them.

“I was awakened from my sleep around 5 am on the 3rd March by a voice that told me to write down what I was hearing. I wrote them, and when my eyes cleared and I read what I wrote, I turned and told my wife that she was pregnant. She doubted it until days later when we confirmed.

“Fast forward, we had my daughter and on the day of her dedication, a prophet told me God has removed what they were using to monitor me in my home and that the person would never step in my house again. The person hasn’t stepped a foot in my house ever again, no matter my invitations. @OfficialArole was another person God used for me. I am ever grateful for him.

“My darling daughter is my evidence of God being our own in my home. My mother’s mini copy. They almost killed her in the womb, but God said no. They mocked her after she was born, but God has given her beauty for their ashes. To God Almighty I return all the glory. Aye o ni mu wa o. Amen”.

“I have played with everybody and I still respect everybody. We respect the likes of Alibaba. At some point, I had to go on a comedy tour with Julius Agwu who didn’t discriminate against me. I’ve covered events for Basketmouth. He has paid me for shows. I’ve also worked with AY.

“And as a Yoruba person, we don’t disrespect anybody who has given us food. So, they are all highly respected. I respect them a lot. And no matter the differences they have, they’re still my senior colleagues in the business. And they have not had reasons to compete with me. So anywhere you place me on the ranking is okay by me. I don’t want to be one of those people who is dragging ranking with anybody in the industry. As long as we are all doing fine, kudos. The most important thing is that we must not allow the industry to suffer.”

Seyi Law: How I handle online trolls, criticisms

Comedian, Seyi Law, has revealed his coping mechanism and strategy to online backlash and criticisms.

Seyi Law, who recently appeared on HIPTV, said that he separates online negativity from his real-life values and never let it affect him personally.

He stated: “Internet trolls and backlash online, for me, even if I respond, it ends there. I don’t take it into my personal life, you don’t see me outside showing it on my face.

“Some would say that they are E-warriors; as long as I try to be compassionate and kind to people, I am in the right standing with my creator. Once I’m in the right standing with my creator, every other thing doesn’t matter,” he explained.

Seyi also drew a clear line between personal insults and defamation, advising against making defamatory claims without proof.

He said: “For those who reply and those who choose to arrest anyone that has defamed then, I don’t advise them otherwise. You can insult someone and you can abuse them but don’t defame them. Don’t say they collected money when you didn’t see them collect money, don’t call them ashawo when you didn’t see them involved in prostitution.

“When a person insults me, those things don’t matter to me, that is your problem but don’t defame. Don’t cross the boundary that will take you to jail. The one’s that I feel I can reply, I reply and the ones that I don’t seem necessary, I ignore,” he concluded.
