How I wish to be remembered, by Makinde

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has advocated for institutional strength as the foundation for effective governance. He believes robust institutions are essential for promoting good governance, accountability, and sustainable development.

Makinde said: “We want to be remembered for the institutions that we’re trying to build to enhance good governance in Oyo State, irrespective of who is coming in and we are succeeding.” He spoke with reporters in Ibadan, the state capital.

In the past five years, Makinde’s administration has made significant strides in infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and security. He has invested heavily in road construction, including the 76km Alao-Akala Highway connecting Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso, the 65km Moniya-Ijaiye-Ibadan Road, and the ongoing construction of the 110km Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road. These projects have improved the state’s infrastructure, created jobs and stimulated economic growth.

In addition to infrastructure development, the administration has also focused on education. The Emmanuel Alayande College of Education is being upgraded to a university, with a Faculty of Agriculture and Renewable Natural Resources in Iseyin. The Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, which Oyo State has taken sole ownership of, has also been renovated.

In the health sector, 264 Primary Health Centres across the state have been renovated and equipped, and General Hospitals have also been renovated and equipped. This has provided improved access to healthcare services for residents of Oyo State.

Makinde has also taken steps to address insecurity and corruption in the state. He established Amotekun, a security outfit, and an anti-corruption agency to tackle corruption. He said: “Before we came in, there was no Amotekun, now I am wearing Amotekun’s cap right now. Forest Rangers will be graduated to prevent bandits from having a foothold in our state.”

One of Makinde’s notable achievements is the construction of the 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility at Ibadan Airport, which is part of the facilities to upgrade the airport to international standards. The state government is also expanding the airport runway, despite it being a federal airport.

Makinde’s commitment to good governance and institutional strength has earned him recognition. His administration’s projects have improved the lives of Oyo State citizens, and his emphasis on transparency, accountability, and predictability has created an environment conducive to economic growth, social justice, and human development.

Effective governance requires more than just executive power or political will. It requires a commitment to the rule of law, transparency, and accountability. Makinde’s administration has demonstrated this commitment, and his achievements are a testament to the importance of strong institutions in promoting good governance.

Makinde’s journey to becoming governor was not an easy one. Before 2019, he contested for the Oyo South Senatorial seat in 2007 but lost the election to Kamoru Adedibu. He remained undeterred by his first failed attempt, and in 2010, under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he aspired for the Oyo South 2011 Senatorial seat but lost the primary to the incumbent Oyo South Senator.

In 2014, Makinde aimed for the Oyo State 2015 governorship ticket under the PDP platform. In December 2014, upon the conclusion of the party’s primary election, he was denied the governorship nomination ticket. Makinde has remained true to his ambition to serve the people of Oyo State. He remained focused and committed to his vision for Oyo State.

On September 29, 2018, Makinde emerged as the PDP’s Oyo State governorship candidate for the 2019 general election after polling 2,772 votes at the primary held at Liberty Stadium, Oke-Ado in Ibadan.

As he noted, “Oyo people took a decision in 2019. We did not have a godfather. Nobody sponsored me. Nobody gave a dime for us to get in there.”

Today, Makinde is hailed as a leader who has brought serious developments to Oyo State, surpassing the achievements of his predecessors. His commitment to institutional strength and good governance has made him a model for effective leadership.

Makinde’s emphasis on institutional strength and good governance has transformed Oyo State. His administration’s projects have improved the lives of citizens, and his commitment to transparency, accountability, and predictability has created an environment conducive to economic growth, social justice, and human development. Makinde noted: “We want to be remembered for the institutions that we’re trying to build such that good governance will be guaranteed in Oyo State.”

  • We will fix PDP to fix Nigeria – Makinde

We will fix PDP to fix Nigeria – Makinde

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will do everything within its power to fix the party and Nigeria.

Makinde stated this on Thursday in Abuja at the inauguration of the Board of Governors and the unveiling of the Roadmap for Peoples Democratic Institute (PDI).

PDI is the research arm of PDP established in 2000 to promote a new democratic culture in Nigeria and Africa through the provision of value-added education, training, capacity building, research, and documentation programmes.

Makinde said that PDP could fix Nigeria, adding that “we will fix PDP and then PDP will fix Nigeria, which will be the basis of real hope for the people of Nigeria.

“As we approach 2027, it is clear that the PDP has to provide real hope for Nigeria. By revitalising the PDI that real hope is being provided for our people.

“Our country needs direction. Nigerians are looking up to the PDP to provide an ideological foundation,” he said.

Makinde said that with the inauguration of the board, PDP was moving a step closer to defining the ideology it stood for.

He advised politicians and leaders who were given opportunity to serve to always ask themselves what they want to be remembered for.

The Oyo governor pledged his commitment to strengthening of the country’s democracy and PDP.

“From 2019, I’ve been benefitting from PDP. So, I want to say thank you to our great party, and all the stakeholders gathered here today, for giving me the opportunity to get not one, but two mandates, back to back, under this umbrella.

“The only thing I can promise you, is that, since I fetched water from that well, and I have been drinking since 1999, I will not pollute the well when it is time for me to exit that office,” he said.

Makinde also urged PDP leaders, members and stakeholders to go into the Nov. 16 Ondo governorship election united and resist any attempt to truncate the election.

He said that the PDP needed true reconciliation and unity to wrestle power from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo.

In his remarks, former Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki, emphasised the need to jointly build PDP, saying parties are built on ideas, philosophies and policies.

He urged PDP members to move away from building ideas on self or on ambition, as Nigeria move towards 2027.

“We cannot have an ambition if we don’t have a party. We cannot have a party if we don’t have ideas. This is where it starts from. This is the foundation that is important.

“Let us desist from talking about who is running for councilors, or who is running for governor, or who is running for president in 2027.

“Let us talk about what is PDP. What does PDP represent? These are the issues and policies that we must take into account,” Saraki said.

In his acceptance speech, the Chairman of PDI Board of Governors, Taofeek Arapaja, pledged the governing board members’ commitment to the mission, and vision of PDI, and to the guiding principles of the PDP.

Arapaja, who is the PDP Deputy National Chairman (South), commended the party leadership and Makinde’s efforts at revamping PDI, said that the board would advance the principles of PDI to enrich Nigeria’s democracy.

“As we embark on this journey, we pledge that we will live with innovations, transparency and inclusivity.

“We are passionate about equipping the next generation of leaders and ensuring that the PDI becomes a true engine of progressive thoughts, skills, building and intellectual discourse within our party and beyond.

“We envision a PDI that is not just a research institute, but a vibrant, inclusive hub for the youths, women and all party members,” Arapaja said.

The Director General of PDI, Dr Edward Adie, acknowledging the support of Makinde for revamping of the institute, seek support from all in terms of funding, personnel among others.

He said that research institute such as PDI was critical for party electoral success, funding substance of power and needed training for political leaders.

    • Host Acting PDP Nat’l chair, NEC, SW leaders to commission Adagunodo building

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Saturday said nobody apart from himself can set an agenda for him on what to do next with his political career.

Apparently reacting to insinuations and permutations of him declaring for the Presidential race in 2027, Makinde said he disagreed with those accusing the ruling party of interfering with other political parties in the country so as not to have a formidable opposition in the next election.

Rather, he charged leaders of the leading opposition party across the board to look inward and see how they can work together and salvage the country, adding that the next election will be between the ruling party and Nigerians.

He noted that the next elections will not even be about APC versus PDP, urging members of the PDP to do their bit to unite the party, unite the base, and let the people of Nigeria speak.

The building personally funded by Governor Makinde is named after the late Olusoji Adagunodo, a former Chairman of the party in the Southwest.

The Nation reports that Makinde had on the death of Adagunodo promised to build a structure and name it after him, to keep the memory alive.

He also at the event announced the appointment of the son of the late Adagunodo as his Special Adviser on Regional Integration.

Speaking, Makinde thanked his counterpart from Osun State, Governor Adeleke, and a former Zonal Chairman, Dr Eddy Olafeso among others for showing political maturity and understanding in honoring the memory of the late leader by attending the event.

He urged all party faithful to shun any form of discord and disunity that is hindering the party from achieving his mandate in providing the alternative needed by the people.

A group, ‘Ikoyi Land Vanguards’, has sought intervention of Governor Seyi Makinde in the vacant stool of Onikoyi of Ikoyi-Ile, in Oriire Local Government of Oyo State.

It urged him to prevail on parties to await the decision of the court on the matter.

The body appealed to Governor Makinde to stand on truth, fairness and rule of law, saying it had faith in his fair-mindedness, humaneness and respect for the rule of law.

Speaking with reporters, the Chairman of the group, Taofeek Lawal, said Prof. Saka Jimoh emerged as the new Onikoyi of Ikoyi-Ile after the stool became vacant, following the death of Oba Abdul-yekeen Ayinla Oladipupo IV in April 2022.

He, however, expressed worry that supporters of the unsuccessful aspirants, who contested with Jimoh, had resorted to peddling rumour that he (Jimoh) was not an indigene of Ikoyi-Ile.

Lawal said their claim was a lie because the forum was familiar with Prof Jimoh’s family and history, adding that his ancestors, from 17th century to date, lived and died in Ikoyi-Ile.

Adegun Royal Family at lkoyi-Ile, in Orire Local Government of Oyo State, has appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to consider the decision of the town’s kingmakers in selecting a new Onikoyi.

A statement by Prince Shehu Hannafi, who holds the traditional title of Esho 1, said over 90 per cent of kingmakers of lkoyi-Ile had unanimously chosen Prince Oladunni Atoyebi Jimoh Saka as the next Onikoyi of Ikoyi land.

Hannafi said indigenes of the town at home and in the diaspora had chosen Saka as a consensus candidate for the exalted position.

He said the town was noted for peace and harmony and would not allow some unscrupulous individuals to take advantage of the delay in selecting a new Oba to cause mischief and mayhem.  Hannafi added: “As one of the key stakeholders and a prominent kingmaker, who respects the tradition, culture and value system of the community, I deem it fit to guide the governor appropriately.”

He implored Governor Makinde to consider the choice of the kingmakers for the development of the town.
