He said his administration will also build two airstrips to be located in Igbeti, Olorunsogo local government area and Otu, Itesiwaju local government areas.

    • Gov won’t join presidential race through backdoor, says Oduyoye

In Oyo State, the resuscitation of  the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s populist legacies is far more urgent and significant than nursing a presidential ambition, the governor, Seyi Makinde has said.

Speaking with visiting members of the PDP Press Corps at the resuscitated old Fashola Farm and Agricbusiness hub yesterday, Makinde noted that the visionary leadership of the Western Region under late Chief Obafemi Awolowo had innovative achievements, including the Cocoa House skyscraper and television station six years ahead of several developed economies.

“Their first skyscraper in Tel Aviv, Israel was built six years after Cocoa House, but, if you go around Tel Aviv today, they have almost 2,000 other skyscrapers in there, and we have not even built a second one!

“What we are doing here is just an opportunity to show you that a long time ago, thinkers passed through this place they did certain things and for us, we want to bring some of these things back and see how we can utilise it to make life a little better for our people,” said Makinde.

Urging members of the PDP Press Corps to return to Abuja with clearer perspectives about issues and developments in Oyo State, Makinde dismissed speculations from those who are preoccupied with pushing the agenda that he is running for the 2027 presidential race already.

“We didn’t do this  because somebody has a presidential ambition, I have no comment on their speculations but all I can say to you is that I’m old enough, if I want to do something, I will come out and say, this is what I want to do.

“So, no speculation, nobody can push my agenda, I will push my agenda when the time comes; I’m glad that you’ve been able to go to a few of our project sites,” Governor Makinde said.

Speaking further on programmes conceptualised during Chief Awolowo’s time as a Premier of Western Region, Governor Makinde justified efforts to revive some of the truly visionary developmental projects that became inactive over the years.

“Here they were breeding cattle, the mother cattle, the breeders that you would now take somewhere else to breed and sell and eat, But Nigeria happened to this place, they ate the breeders and the mothers. They ate everything. But now,  we are trying to provide this. Where you are is space for Fashola agric hub and agro-tourism.

“ Around here, we met structures from the 1950s saying this specie of cattle, this bridge, this was done, that was done; so, we’re refurbishing all of that so that we can tell our story that, once upon a time, there was a country that built Cocoa House from efforts like this,” he said.

Pointing out that his administration is strongly focused on the continuation of infrastructural development projects including hundreds of kilometres of roads that were long abandoned and classified as federal or local government roads, Governor Makinde emphasised that it was not roads or infrastructures alone that matter.

“So, what I will say is that we want to be remembered, not just for construction of roads or that we built the airport, the local government; we want to be remembered for the institutions that we’re trying to build such that good governance will be entrenched or  guaranteed in Oyo State, irrespective of who is coming in – and we are succeeding.

“Before we came in, there was no Amotekun but now, I am  wearing Amotekun cap  and on Monday, they will graduate the Forest Rangers so that bandits will never have any foothold in our state.

“We also set up our own anti-corruption agency, we set up our rule of law enforcement authority because even when you get to Abuja airport and you’re driving to town, you will sometimes see people driving against traffic.

“If you’re a foreigner who is aware that we want to promote things like tourism, some people will freak out just from seeing on a major highway,  traffic driving against you; in our state, we will stamp it out – it is a national menace, but we will stamp it out,” Governor Makinde asserted

Meanwhile, former Alliance for Democracy (AD) Whip in the House of Representatives,  Babatunde Oduyoye, has said that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, would not join the 2027 presidential race through the backdoor.

He said contrary to widespread claims that Makinde  has thrown his hat into the ring, he said the governor has not made any categorical statement on any ambition.

Oduyoye, who was Makinde’s Special Adviser on Strategy and Political Matters during his first term, described the governor as a strategic planner who would put some things in place before taking such an important decision.

He said since the governor has not taken certain steps, which he ordinarily would have taken, if he were to be truly interested in running for president, the ambition may be coming from well-wishers who want him to move higher on the political ladder.

Oduyoye maintained that Makinde has not taken a decision, adding that he has not done what he is known for as a strategic politician.

He said: “I have read the reports that Governor Makinde has declared his presidential ambition for 2027, but I have not read anyone with the exact quote from the governor.

“I know Governor Makinde and I know what he will do if he is interested in running for president. As of now, the governor has not done those things. So, I am sure that this ambition is coming from his well-wishers.

“Governor Makinde has never been one to shy away from challenges, and he is certainly not going to join the presidential race through the back door; he is not cowardly. I know him; I know what he will do if and when that time comes.”

‘Ondo REC can’t guarantee free, fair, credible poll’

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has urged Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chair, Prof. Yakubu Mahmood, to replace Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, Ondo State Resident Electoral Commisioner (REC), noting she is from the state and could compromise the governorship election.

Makinde spoke at a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rally in Akure, stressing PDP is not afraid of a fair contest, but demands a REC from outside Ondo be assigned to ensure a level-playing field.

Makinde said we demand that Mahmood removes Mrs. Babalola because she can compromise integrity of the poll.

According to him, the party will continue to insist on this until she is removed.

‘‘Bring another REC that will be fair and that will allow a level-playing field. We, as PDP, are not afraid of a fair contest”, he said.

Corroborating Makinde, the party’s Southwest chapter noted importance of a credible election in Ondo. Sanya Atofarati, PDP leader in the region, urged the people to protect their mandate in November.

Atofarati reiterated the party’s confidence in its candidate, Alfred Agboola, while warning against attempts to manipulate the process.

Atofarati said Southwest PDP supports redeployment of Mrs. Babalola ‘‘because she cannot be trusted to superintend the November election.

“The people are concerned about the election, and INEC has the responsibility to ensure transparency and accountability in the electoral processes.

“It is evident the people have resolved to vote for PDP candidate, Agboola Ajayi, and any attempt to impose a known manipulator through INEC will be resisted,” he said.

PDP alleged Mrs. Babalola, a former INEC director of Legal Services, has ties to Ondo State, despite INEC’s claims to the contrary. The party wondered why INEC is insisting on retaining her as REC, considering the conflict of interest.

But INEC, via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, said Mrs. Babalola is not from Ondo State, in line with its policy of not posting RECs to their states of origin. However, the commission did not specify her state of origin.

Ruling House hails Makinde for suspending Oniware

Members of Oyerinade Ruling House at Iware in AFIJIO Local Government of Oyo State have hailed Governor Seyi Makinde for ordering Alhaji Abdulrasheed Adetunji to stop parading himself as the Oniware of Iware.

They cited disputes and legal challenges surrounding his appointment as reasons.

In a letter written to Adetunji through the Chairman of AFIJIO Local Government, dated May 24, 2024, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters said the process of appointing Adetunji had not been completed, ‘’as it is still a subject of court proceedings.’’

He was, therefore, warned to stop parading himself as the Oniware of Iware pending the determination of the court.

LG autonomy: Makinde urges states to focus on productivity to boost IGR

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has called on states to focus more on productive activities that can boost internally generated revenues.

Makinde, made the call while reacting to the Supreme Court judgment that granted financial autonomy to local governments.

The governor, while receiving the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Dr Chris Iziguzo, in his office at the secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, said the Supreme Court judgment has nothing to do with Oyo State.

“Because since I came in, we have conducted local government election twice, and for one day after we held the first election, there’s been no caretaker anywhere.

“We planned and gave allowance for election process to go on smoothly. So, it’s not a big problem for us,” he said.

The governor, who lamented the inability of many of the local government areas to generate revenue outside of the federal allocation, said the focus of the country should be on how to increase productivity.

According to him, it is a big shame for this country that we cannot feed ourselves.

“We should go back to those things that will allow us to bring confidence back to our people and to ensure that this country is back on the path of growth and economic progress,” he said

He explained that the issue Nigeria have “is that we’re not producing enough, we’re not productive. Whatever it is that we’re sharing in Abuja, which is what this FAAC is all about, you want to have value for it, but our real problem is productivity.”

Iziguzo, during the visit, invested Makinde as the Grand Patron of NUJ, Oyo State Council, in recognition of his immense support to the union over the years.

NAN reports that in a landmark judgment on Thursday, the apex court ordered the Federal Government to immediately start the direct payment of local government funds to the latter’s exclusive accounts.

In its lead judgment read by Justice Emmanuel Agim, the apex court scolded the decades-long refusal of the state government on financial autonomy for local governments.

Justice Agim noted that the 774 local government councils in the country should manage their funds themselves.

He said only democratically elected local government administrations are entitled to these funds and not caretaker committees.

  • We must repair our economy to free people from poverty, says Makinde

We must repair our economy to free people from poverty, says Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Monday, February 26, declared that despite the challenges and hardship facing the country, all hands must be on deck to repair the economy rather than trade blame.

The governor maintained that one of the ways to achieve such repair is for the country to shift its focus to export orientation instead of import substitution.

He noted that developing an export market rather than focusing on producing for local consumption will help in improving the economy and the currency of the country.

Governor Makinde stated this at the opening of the Oyo State International Trade Fair known as “EXPOYO 2024,” which returned after a 15-year hiatus, noting that his government remained open to bringing prosperity to the state.

While declaring open the event with the theme, “Showcasing the Economic Potentials of Oyo State through Agriculture, Micro Small and Medium Enterprises,” at the Permanent Trade Fair Complex, Sango, Ibadan, Governor Makinde noted that though people argue that allocations from the Federal Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) have doubled, states only have 26 per cent of the allocations and that all stakeholders must work together to bring Nigerians out of the current hardship.

He also said that with the return of EXPOYO, the fair will now be an annual event, pointing out that despite insinuations that second-term governors are often laid back in terms of performance, his government resuscitated the event and has been breaking new grounds in expanding the state’s economy.

He said: “It is my pleasure to be here to declare open the International Trade Fair EXPOYO 2024, and I want to assure this gathering that it will be an annual event.

“We all know that people say second-term governors don’t work but this did not happen in my first tenure but it has happened in the ongoing second tenure.

“This is a very tough period for us as a country. Economically, things are not going the way we want but this is not the time to give up. It is the time to look at opportunities because opportunities are always lurking in the corner when there are challenges.

“For us in Oyo State, we are not giving up. I can see notable industrialists here. It is about time we changed our orientation. People will talk about what we produce in Nigeria and showcase the economic potential of Oyo State.

“We are not interested only in things that we will consume locally in Oyo State. Import substitution means you are looking at only your own market. Export orientation means we want to produce here and sell to the world and earn the necessary foreign exchange.

“For us here, it is a challenge for OYCCIMA and the industrialists in our midst. We must develop our export market and attract foreigners so that, in the years to come, this exhibition will become truly international. As for OYCCIMA, we have a conducive atmosphere not just for exhibition but for trade and industrialisation. We want to attract investments to Oyo State.

“It is not acceptable to me or to any of us here that a state, which is 120km away from here, is generating over N65 billion every month in IGR and we are struggling to generate N4 billion monthly.”

While promising a conducive environment for trade and industrialisation to attract investors to the state, he charged OYCCIMA to also attract foreign investors so that the fair would become really international in the years to come.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Commissioner, Ministry of Trade, Industry, Investment and Cooperatives, Ademola Ojo, said Governor Makinde has been expanding the economy of Oyo State by working in concert with the players in the private sector and leveraging the state’s potential to move the state forward.

While calling on the people of the state to be part of the epoch-making fair, Ojo equally assured that Makinde’s administration’s policies will continue to enhance the ease of doing business in the state.

Also in his address, the President, of Oyo State Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Dr. Daniel Gbadero, appreciated Governor Makinde for his exceptional economic transformation agenda and his support towards the success of the “EXPOYO 2024.”

The governor and his entourage later inspected the trade fair exhibition ground.

Present at the event were the former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Hamid Gbadamosi; member of the Board of Trustees, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief (Mrs) Mutiat Ladoja; a former Minister of Industry, Trade and Investments, Mrs Onikepo Akande; foremost industrialist, Chief Bode Amoo; representative of the Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin and Justice Akintola, who represented the Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Iyabo Yerima.

Others were the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo; Chief of Staff, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi; former Chief of Staff, Chief Bisi Ilaka; Chairman and Co-Chairman of the Oyo State Elders Council, Dr. Saka Balogun and Elder Wole Oyelese respectively as well as members of the Oyo State Advisory Council.
