Seyi Tinubu launches drug banks project, grants N1m scholarship to doctors

Son of the President Seyi Tinubu has described the country’s infant and maternal mortality rates as unacceptable, urging immediate action from the government and private sector.

He stressed that Nigeria, ranked fourth globally for the highest rates of infant and maternal mortality, must see its ranking improve.

Tinubu expressed concerns over the alarming statistics, noting that in 2023, Nigeria recorded an infant mortality rate of 54.74 deaths per 1,000 live births, while the maternal mortality rate in 2020 stood at 1,047 deaths per 100,000 live births.

On Thursday, he launched an intervention programme, the Infant and Maternal Healthcare Intervention-Drug Banks for Indigent Patients and Obstetrics & Gynecology and Pediatric Pharmacy at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH).

He also announced the launch of a scholarship scheme for final-year pediatric residency doctors, offering a grant of N1m to assist them with registration and preparation for their final fellowship exams.

Speaking during the commissioning of the drug banks, Tinubu described the infant and maternal mortality incidences in the country as unacceptable and must be urgently addressed by the government and well-meaning individuals and corporate Nigerians.

He said it wass high time Nigeria’s ranking as the fourth with the highest burden on the map of countries with high rates of infant and maternal mortality dropped.

According to him, the project is in support of Nigeria’s quest to reduce infant and maternal mortality incidences in Nigeria, adding that the comprehensive scheme will also involve medical equipment and research, with a target of 600,000 indigent patients monthly across 60 tertiary health institutions in the country

Tinubu, who was represented by Pharm. Ojeje Amin Onimisi, said: “Our intervention is driven from the passion for children. From the health needs of children, we have funded several hospitals. We have had to culture skull for the treatment of a child with congenital abnormalities.

“Now we are doing it on a larger scale to ensure that many Nigerians benefit. This intervention is for the vulnerable. If a child is born into a situation of being needy due to no fault of theirs should be supported.

“This project is going to be expanded in the areas of medical equipment, and research that revolves around infant and maternal health care and it would be 10,000 beneficiaries across 60 tertiary health institutions across Nigeria per month.

“That means we are speaking of giving this aide to 600,000 indigent patients on a monthly basis”.

He urged the management of the hospital to ensure the effective and efficient use of the intervention for indigent patients who are most vulnerable.

The National Coordinator, Drug Banks for Indigent Patients in Obstetrics & Gynecology
and Pediatric Pharmacy Intervention for Infant and Maternal Healthcare, Benson Ayodele Cole noted that tertiary hospitals were chosen because of the enormous burden of indigent patients they receive yearly and also because they currently have better-organized systems and infrastructure to administer the scheme.

“As the National Coordinator of this project, I am delighted to let you know that after this first phase, the program will be cascaded down to the Secondary and Primary Care levels in General Hospitals and Primary Healthcare Centres.

“The event we are witnessing today is the official flag off of a philanthropy initiative of Mr Seyi Tinubu whose love for children has compelled him to set this Maternal and Child Health Intervention Scheme to administer free medicines and delivery materials to 60 tertiary hospitals across Nigeria.

“Because of the outstanding work being done by the ABU Teaching Hospital, Seyi Tinubu has
chosen here for the official commissioning of this nationwide project.

“You may already know the staggering unfortunate statistics of infant mortality in Nigeria which as of last year stood at 54.740 deaths per 1000 live births, while Nigeria’s maternal mortality rate for 2020 was 1,047.

“Indeed our maternal mortality is about the 4th highest in the world, and according to the World Health Organization, nearly 20% of all global maternal deaths happen in Nigeria.

“As the National Coordinator of this project, I am delighted to let you know that after this first phase, the program will be cascaded down to the Secondary and Primary Care levels in General Hospitals and Primary Healthcare Centres,” he said.

Tinubu through the intervention commissioned a solar-powered industrial borehole at Banzazzau, Zaria city to cater for the perennial water shortage to forestall the devastating consequences of cholera outbreak and other water-related infectious diseases in such communities.

He also launched a scholarship scheme for resident doctors who are in the final year of their pediatrics residency program with a grant of N1,000,000 to support them in registration and preparation for their final fellowship examination.

Aisha Suleiman became the first grant for her outstanding performance.

Aisha Ololade, National Coordinator for the intervention on education affirmed that portable water goes a long way in maintaining effective Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in the process of curbing an outbreak of diseases that can result in infant and maternal death.

She said potable water and drug intervention are twins of a kind, as they go hand in hand in ensuring the safety of children and mothers as they reduce the rise in infant and maternal health issues.

  • Seyi Tinubu and his critics

    Seyi Tinubu and his critics

It is unfortunate that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has decided to drag the name of an innocent and industrious young man, Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, into his ever increasingly desperate politics occasioned by  his serial losses in his bid to become Nigeria’s President. To Atiku, Seyi’s crime now is that he has been on the board since 2018 of a company owned by the Chagoury family that won the bid of a portion of the transformational Lagos-Calabar Coastal road project. As Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Tinubu has rightly said, Seyi cannot be denied his right to chart his own path in life all because he is the President’s son.

Seyi is an adult, 38 years old. Those who know him readily acknowledge that he is respectful and restrained, a true Omoluabi. He is a qualified lawyer who, through hard work and dynamism is establishing himself as a frontline accomplished businessman. His business interests as an innovator in several aspects of outdoor advertising, for instance, justified his presence at the last Climate Change summit, which some ignorantly criticized. Seyi was with his father throughout the last campaigns both within and outside the country. On his own, he created a platform that played a significant role in mobilizing youth support for Tinubu’s candidacy. It is certainly no crime for him to be interested in and working in his own way at ensuring its success.

Every administration has its style. Donald Trump gave his daughter and son-in-law prominent roles to play in his White House. President Bill Clinton tapped his wife, Hillary’s cerebral resources to formulate and push his ambitious healthcare plan. President Kennedy appointed his brother as Attorney-General. Many children born into high profile political families understandably develop an interest in public life and service. It is well within their rights. Seyi Tinubu surely has committed no crime. His critics should let him be.

Focus on issues, not Seyi Tinubu’

The leadership of the National Civil Society Council (NCSCN) has condemned the incessant attacks on Seyi Tinubu, first son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, by some Nigerians.

It described the attacks as unnecessary distractions from critical issues of national development.

The group, in a statement jointly signed by the Executive Director, Amb. Blessing Akinlosotu and the Deputy Executive Director, Southern Nigeria, Olayemi Success, in Abuja, frowned at the manner with which certain persons have continuously misinterpreted and wrongly portrayed what, according to them, should naturally have been a credit to President Tinubu.

It asserted that a major requirement for successful leadership is a testimony of a united and bonded family working towards collective goals and aspirations as has been demonstrated by the Tinubu’s over decades.

“The leadership of the Civil Society Council can readily attest to the consistency and commitment of the family of President Tinubu to the political aspirations of the Family head that has contributed immensely to the successes experienced by the President, even in difficult years in the trenches of NADECO struggle for democratic emancipation of Nigeria.

“Without the resilience and support from family line, President Tinubu would have been history by now, hence, the love, passion and uncompromising bond of partnership existing between the Tinubu’s till date, which is a plus and not minus to a prominent leader of that caliber.

“The solidarity and support shown to his father by Seyi Tinubu, and the reciprocal love by the father President Tinubu to his son, Seyi, should be source of inspiration and thing of emulation to leaders across the Federation, so long as it does not interfere with or have negative impact on business of governance.

“Across the globe, great and successful leaders have been seen to showcase the strong bonding existing within their families by publicly presenting spouses and children at necessary occasions and ceremonies with their countries and even in their oversea trips.

“The case of Seyi Tinubu accompanying his father in some oversea trips is not isolated or strange, as we can draw endless lists of great and reputable world leaders like the Bush Family, Mandela Family, the Barak Obama Family, Prince Charles etc. who are severally seen in public and overseas trips with spouses and offspring.

“President Clinton visited Nigeria on an official state visit with his adult daughter, Chelsea, who was the FIRST person he introduced to then-President Obasanjo.

“Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher took her son, Mark Thatcher, to overseas UK Business summits. Sir Mark Thatcher is a businessman, as is Seyi Tinubu. Also President Obasanjo similarly took his son, Gbenga, on a business summit while he was President.

“It then becomes worrisome to the Council why the case of Seyi Tinubu has been over sensationalized in the Nigerian media space,” the grpup said.

The leadership of NCSCN explained that the trip to Qatar was publicly billed as a business summit for which Nigerian businesses were meant to collaborate with Qatari companies.

It appealed to all Nigerians to focus on crucial issues of national development and desist from trivial matters.

Seyi Tinubu did nothing wrong by calling for patience, group affirms

A support group of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), BAT Vanguard has exonerated Seyi Tinubu of any complacency calling on Nigerians to be patient with the federal government in the face of the challenges being faced by the people.

The group in a statement jointly signed by its chairman, Hon. Sola Olofin and Secretary, Jesutega Onokpasa in Abuja on Thursday condemned the attack on Seyi Tinubu for his humble appeal to fellow Nigerians to be patient.

BAT Vanguard leaders commended him for positively engaging his fellow countrymen and women while assuring them that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

The statement reads: “We find it to be entirely out of place and quite condemnable for several well-known social media trolls and their clueless cheerleaders to have singled out Seyi Tinubu for particularly vitriolic trolling in the wake of his humble appeal to his fellow Nigerians to be patient in this period at which many of our fellow citizens are going through challenges.

“Indeed, we commend him for positively engaging his fellow countrymen and women while assuring them that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“Even as the son of the President of this country, the gentleman is still a bonafide and full-fledged citizen of Nigeria and is right to be concerned for the good of his fellow citizens while encouraging them to be resilient and hopeful amid a challenge that we will surely overcome.

“Seyi Tinubu has always displayed interest in the welfare of fellow Nigerians and regularly intervened to generously touch the lives of numerous Nigerians across this country.

“He equally regularly familiarizes himself with the needs, priorities and concerns of the youths of this country even as he has always endeavoured to mobilize them for positive engagements in service to their fatherland.

“Without equivocation, we consider him a patriot and a young man we can all be proud of.”

The group noted that the present challenge started piling up a long time ago, stressing that “unless we want to deceive ourselves in this country, it should be obvious and crystal clear to everyone that they cannot be solved overnight.

“We therefore call on our fellow Nigerians to be hopeful and to remain focused and committed to the progress of this country.”
