Edo 2024: There’s tension between Obaseki and I – Shaibu

The deputy governor of Edo state, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has disclosed that there is tension between him and Governor Godwin Obaseki.

He reiterated that for six months, there had been no allocation to his office.

Shaibu, a former member of the House of Representatives, spoke on Tuesday, December 19, as a special guest of honour at the inauguration of the secretariat of Mrs. Nefishetu Yakubu-led Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, at No. 20, Ogbesasa Street, off Sokponba Road, Benin.

He said: “The environment is actually conducive and fine. I want to identify with you and to say, you know I am your member, I am a member and I will always do everything and anything for the growth of journalism and journalists anywhere I am.

“I am your ambassador anywhere I am. This is not because of politics, but because of what you have done to save my life, in the course of doing your work.

“I wouldn’t have been deputy governor today, if I am not alive. But there was a journalist that investigated, wrote a report, and saved my life in the hands of the military.

“So, you can see why anytime you invite me, even if it is difficult, I must show up. Because, that is the only way I can appreciate you and show that what you are doing, you should keep it up and encourage you.

“I will take care of the one year rentage that you have paid. I will return to you. I am sure you contributed money to pay for the one year rentage. I will return the money to you, so that it will be in your purse for other things you will like to do. I would have done more, but you know there is tension between the governor and I. For six months, no allocation to my office.”

Edo deputy governor also stated that whatever he was currently doing was through contributions from his friends and goodwill, thereby still standing very strong, since Edo should be one.

He said he was determined to make sure that good governance was seen, felt and touched in Edo, and to strengthen institutions.

Shaibu said: “I came into politics, because I felt that we should have an egalitarian society. I came into politics to make institutions strong, because that is the only way you can have the society of our dream.

“When institutions are strong, you deal with those guys that think they are powerful, moderate their excesses, and also promote and help the weak in the society.

“Institution does not know the rich, strong, and the poor. It takes care of all strata of life. That is what I am standing for, that is my calling to joining politics. That is why I have sacrificed a lot of things to make sure the institution called Edo works.

“I even sacrificed my personal entitlements to make sure this institution works. In the coming weeks, I will give a stewardship of what I have done as deputy governor from 2016 to date. I will catalogue the things that I am entitled to, that I had to forfeit for peace and tranquility. I will also catalogue some of the things that I have been asked to do as deputy governor, and I have done them credibly well.”

Edo deputy governor also stated that many people would be amazed that his loyalty was not purchased, but genuine, real to Edo people, and to make institutions strong.

Shaibu described himself as journalists’ partner in the struggle, while assuring that he would continue to struggle to make the society better, and assured that victory was sure.

The Chairperson of Correspondents’ Chapel, Mrs. Nefishetu Yakubu, earlier in her welcome address, described the chapel as a proud child of the Edo state council of NUJ, under the  leadership of Comrade Festus Alenkhe.

She noted that the congress’ decision to move from the Press Centre of Edo NUJ on Sir Gabriel Igbinedion Road, Government Reservation Road (GRA), Benin, was fueled by the need for a more spacious and  serene environment.

Yakubu stated that the new secretariat was not an alternative to NUJ Press Centre, the home to all journalists in Edo, but merely symbolised the commitment to providing a comfortable and productive workspace for members of correspondents’ chapel, and a testament to the unwavering dedication to the principles of journalism and the pursuit of excellence.

Stop destroying my billboards, allow electorate to decide next gov – Shaibu warns

The deputy governor of Edo state, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has warned the persons who are destroying his campaign billboards to let Edo electorate decide the next governor of the state.

Shaibu, who was angry when he visited the scene of the destruction of one of his campaign billboards on Lagos Street, Benin yesterday, described the action as very unfortunate.

Edo deputy governor, who spoke in Hausa, Yoruba and greeted the people in Esan languages, disclosed that his campaign billboards were dismantled on two different occasions, at the same spot.

He revealed that he had secured all the stands for his campaign billboards since June 2023.

Shaibu said: “I am a man who plans ahead in whatever I want to do. I paid and secured all of them (billboards) across Edo state, and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the owners, and fully paid for.

“This kind of ugly development is capable of scaring private investors from Edo State. This is why we have to be very careful as a government and individuals in our actions.

“We are going to replace the destroyed billboard right now. We hope it will not be tampered with again. We have been patient enough, they must not provoke us. Our patience must not be taken for granted.”

Edo deputy governor described the state as peaceful, but.declared that peace must be allowed to prevail before, during and after the September 21, 2024 governorship election.

Shaibu clears air on attacked Sunshine Stars

Edo State Deputy Governor Comrade Philip Shaibu, has stated that he is not in competition with Governor Godwin Obaseki on the payment of the hospital bill of the attacked players and officials of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side, Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure.

Obaseki’s representatives, who were top officials of his government and personal aides, visited at an undisclosed hospital, the players and officials, whose team’s bus was attacked by armed robbers on the Ore-Benin Expressway on Thursday, as they were heading for Benin for a scheduled NPFL Match 13 tie against Bendel Insurance.

Shaibu also separately visited the attacked players and officials in the hospital, and later in their undisclosed hotel.

Obaseki offered to foot the bill of the medical treatment of all the persons involved in the unfortunate incident, with Shaibu also doing the same things.

Edo deputy governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebomhiana Musa, said yesterday evening: “Our attention has been drawn to the fact that His Excellency, the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has directed that the medical bill of the injured Ball Boy and Kit Manager of Sunshine Stars FC of Akure be paid by Edo State government.

“Consequently, the state’s Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. (Comrade) Philip Shaibu, has withdrawn his earlier promise to pay the medical bill. He, however, said the cash gift he gave the players, when he visited them in their hotel on Saturday, remains.

“The office of Governor and Deputy Governor are one. We are not in any way in competition.”

Shaibu also stated that he acted swiftly on the sad incident, because of the passion and love he had for football, and as someone who had been there before, thereby knowing the feelings of the players.

  • Shaibu in purgatory

    Shaibu in purgatory

They are beating me and I am crying and I am buying handkerchiefs to clear the tears,” Philip Shaibu, embattled Edo State deputy governor wailed from his self-induced political purgatory.  “People say we are fighting, but I’m not fighting.  I’m being beaten.”

That was him, at his declaration for Governor, in the Edo 2024 off-season election. But  he could well have been screeching, in divine pains and chains, as Satan and hosts in John Milton’s Paradise Lost, who would reign in hell than serve in heaven.

Let him endure his purgatory — as any good Catholic!  If you combine perfidy with ingratitude — as Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki treated their joint benefactor, Adams Oshiomhole, you deserve all that and more.

How far Shaibu will go in his gubernatorial push is in the womb of time.  Obaseki too probably heads for chilly post-power days, with his ruthless, take-no-prisoners attitude to power.  Whatever their personal comeuppance, no tears from here!

Hardball’s umpteenth concern is strengthening the Deputy Governor’s Office — as well as the Vice President’s — as institutions of the democratic state, worthy of respect and honour, from its present scorn, especially when No. 1 and 2 pounce on each other.

Though both governor and deputy run a joint ticket, in power, the deputy becomes some democratic serf: his political life at the pleasure of the governor, and some of his most reckless hirelings.

That’s why a Chris Nehikhare, Obaseki’s mere hireling as Edo commissioner for Communication and (Dis)Orientation, would talk down on the Deputy Governor — a constitutional creation — and look smug he had done his job.

Read Also: Shaibu thanks Obaseki on surprise birthday message

No, he hasn’t.  Even in the Bible, there’s nothing noble about the voice of Isaac and hands of Esaw, en route to stolen blessings.  Both the governor and loud hireling here stay condemned for crass anti-democratic conduct.

Yes, Shaibu’s conduct — as Obaseki’s — has betrayed a scandalous lack of character.  Yet, not even that should rob him of his constitution-guaranteed right to declare for Governor.

Obaseki too, though he is governor, has no power to play God over the rights of a co-citizen.  He can endorse or demur — that’s within his choice.

But to use Shaibu’s legitimate aspiration, as excuse to defund his office (as Shaibu alleges, these past six months), is arrant subversion bordering on a high constitutional crime.   The irony though is that there is absolutely no guarantee that, were places to be traded, Shaibu himself wouldn’t behave exactly that way.

That’s the point: many of those who occupy high office, in our democracy, are dwarf-like, set against their towering offices.  That explains why a governor often develops the funny hubris that his deputy is his office toy, with which he can do anything.

It’s not the letters of the law.  It’s rather the spirit.  Political office holders must operate with mutual respect.  That’s the only way our democracy can grow and deepen.

Shaibu, a former majority leader of the Edo House of Assembly and ex-member of the House of Representatives, in his response, stated that by his exposure and experience as a youth, he was adequately prepared and equipped to be Edo governor from November 12, 2024.

He chronicled his struggles and sacrifices with other like-minded in fighting for the emancipation of Nigerian students and the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria.

Edo deputy governor said: “I am happy to be getting this kind of massive support from my fellow youths and students. We are told that the youths are the leaders of tomorrow. But the journey to taking over positions of leadership in our country starts today. By the grace of God, and with your support, the Edo of our collective dream is possible.

“All l enjoin you to do is to go about spreading the gospel of a better Edo State with Philip Shaibu as Governor, and let me assure you that I will not disappoint you.”

Shaibu, at Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin on Monday, while declaring his intention to vie in the September 21 next year’s governorship election, insisted that nothing and no one could stop his aspiration on the platform of the governing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki, also of PDP.

Edo 2024: God instructed me to pursue governorship ambition, says Shaibu

The deputy governor of Edo state, Philip Shaibu, has claimed that his ambition to contest in the 2024 governorship election in the state is a divine directive from God.

He claimed to have conferred with God and got an unequivocal directive to carry out his intentions.

Shaibu formally announced on Monday, November 27, that he would compete for the state’s governorship in 2024 on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform.

The deputy governor has been at odds with his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki, over his governorship ambitions, but the tension was later resolved.

Speaking on Channels TV on Tuesday, Shaibu said: “What I mean is no one can stop us, we are Edo people, from our ancestral backgrounds we are confident, we fight for our rights.

“The same God that gives poverty is the God that I have gone to and has asked me to go ahead, I don’t do things by my strength so since I am sure that God is with me, no man can stop me.”

Shaibu: I’m intimidated, my allocation seized

Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu yesterday cried out that he was being intimidated for declaring his ambition to succeed his boss, Governor Godwin Obaseki on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Shaibu, who unfolded his aspiration in Benin City, the state capital, complained that the allocation to his office has been withheld in the last five months.

Although the declaration was scheduled for Eterno Hotel, Aiguobasimwin Crescent, off Ikpokpan Road, Government Reservation Area (GRA), it was shifted to Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin, after supporters of the governor under the aegis of ‘Finish Well Group’ stormed the place for a rally.

Obaseki, who has refused to endorse the deputy governor as his successor in next year’s election, offered his best wishes.

Edo Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, who reacted on behalf of the Edo State Government said: “We wish Shaibu well. His incompetent handlers should be blamed for losing initial venue of declaration.”

He added:”So shameful that he (Shaibu) could not make adequate arrangement for his declaration. Shame on him and his handlers. Edo State Government or Governor Godwin Obaseki should not be blamed. Eterno Hotel is a private business. We do not interfere with the management of the hotel.”

    My allocation seized, says Shaibu

Shaibu, who said has suffered intimidation, complained that his office has not received any allocation from the state government in the last five years.

The deputy governor, who spoke on a live television programme, said he was unperturbed by his ordeals, adding that as the candidate to be, he would not be distracted.

Shaibu  has been in the eye of the storm since his ambition became a public knowledge.

His official office was relocated from Government House and his media crew disbanded.

The deputy governor said it was unfortunate that  Obaseki has allowed some individuals with vested interests to come in between them.

Dismissinv insinuations of rift with his boss, he said he was only being threatened for declaring his bid.

Shaibu said he was sure of getting the support of Edo voters because his style of governance since 2016 has reflected competence and capabilities.

He said: “I’m sure of getting support from Edo South, Central and my own senatorial district, which is Edo North.

“This because I’m completely home boy and detribalised. I have support base from across the three senatorial districts because I am a grassroots person and I relate with people seamlessly.

“I use the word that I am a street boy as I’m always with the people.  So, I’m confident and sure of winning the race.

“With how they have been going after me, I have therefore, seen that I am the candidate to beat. This is why they are blocking me from declaring.

“How come I am the only one that is being asked not to contest?  I am the only one that my office was relocated because I wanted to declare my intention.

“I am the only one that, close to five months now, no allocation to my office just because I declared.

“When I said I was pressed, but not distressed, I understand the kind of intimidation and oppression I have gone through.

“Notwithstanding, the truth is that all these point to the fact that I am the candidate to beat and I will not want to reveal my plans.

“I have my strategies and all I’ve done is that I refused to be distracted.  I can bet you that even the Governor will support me when the time comes.”

Shaibu said he would defeat Obaseki’s anointed candidate. His words:“Definitely, I’ll defeat the so-called candidate of the governor, not because I have the power, but because Edo people want their own and I am their own. Edo people do not want importation; they want their own.

“The problem I have with the governor is that he has allowed certain individuals that have interest in governance to come between us.  He is managing in his own style and the way he feels he can manage it.  I am also managing it the way I feel I can manage it.

“They are beating me and I am crying and I am buying handkerchiefs to clear the tears.

“People say we are fighting, but I’m not fighting.  I’m being beaten.

“They’re doing everything to stop me, but they can’t.  The truth is that Edo people have made up their mind.

“Edo people hate intimidation.  Ah, the kind of intimidation and harassment I have received within this period is only God that has actually seen me through. Irrespective of the intimidation, I have resolved not to fight.

“If PDP wants to win the race, the party needs a unifier, who I am.”

    ‘My plan for Edo’

Shaibu, a former Majority Leader of Edo House of Assembly, and ex-member of the House of Representatives, maintained that he remained undeterred, focused, and determined.

Shedding light on his achievements,  he said: “Back in the day, you did not just call me ‘Mr. Constituency Project,’ for nothing. In my time as a legislator, I delivered 49 constituency projects at the state level, and 13 solid constituency projects within my short stint at the federal level.

“I have fought the good fight for you, my people. Along the way, I suffered humiliations, and enjoyed many moments of victory, but I am thankful in all things.

“I have been pressed, but not crushed, persecuted but not abandoned, badly hurt but not destroyed. I resonate with the tireless and irrepressible spirit of the Edo People. By the grace of God, nothing and no one can stop us. After all, I be original Edo son, 100 per cent home boy.

“This is why today, I stand before you with great conviction and resolve, as I declare my intention to run for the office of the Governor of Edo State, on the platform of the PDP, in the upcoming 2024 election, and I am confident that with your support, we can take Edo State to even greater heights.”

The deputy governor said he joined the race to fulfil the vision of the founding fathers of the state.

He said: “When Edo State was created in 1991, our brilliant leaders, fully aware of our ancestral destiny named us ‘The Heart Beat of The Nation.’

That was not an ordinary slogan. It was a call to destiny…mandate that we must collectively achieve.

“As your Deputy Governor in the last seven years, I have had the privilege of working closely with our amiable Governor, His Excellency Governor Godwin Obaseki, to lay a solid foundation for progress in Edo State. Under our administration, we have seen remarkable achievements and milestones, but there is still much work to be done.

“I am aware of the need by the greater Edo people for a more inclusive government, a government of the Edo people, by the Edo people, and for the Edo people. A government of individuals who have been there and know the pains and wishes of an average Edolite. A government, together, with the greater Edo people, will reignite the Edo spirit and transform our tomorrow.

“Since my foray into politics three decades ago, I have lived among you and you have loved me as your very own son. I have felt your pains at close quarters, sat with the elders to benefit from their words of wisdom, led the youths in many struggles for their rights, visibility and freedom, learned the intricacies of modern governance and built adequate service capacity.

“You all are witnesses to my antecedents in government. When the waters of the Lagdo dam flooded our lands and threatened our means of livelihood, I led the emergency response team that managed the impact and kept it in check, and continued to be involved in most humanitarian issues within the state.

“When COVID-19 came to threaten our very existence, I put my life on the line in its very early days, when protection was not available, and worked to restore calm and order at the isolation centres.

“Our sporting treasure, Bendel Insurance Football Club, became my responsibility at some point within this administration. Through strategic management and relentless commitment, we have returned Bendel Insurance to the height of glory it belongs.

“When kidnappers took some of our citizens from Ubiaja and Igueben train station, I worked with the rescue team, led the rescue mission from the front and brought back the kidnapped citizens safe and sound.

“Under my supervision as the Deputy Governor, our Internally-Generated Revenue (IGR) has grown impressively. Thanks to the introduction of digital and cutting-edge ideas.”

Shaibu said his campaigns would be built upon five core pillars, which are vital to the transformation and prosperity of the state.

These are infrastructural development and economic transformation; education, sports, skills’ development and job creation; healthcare and social welfare systems; agriculture, rural development, and poverty alleviation; and security, environmental sustainability, and transparent governance.

He said: “These five pillars of our agenda, among others, represent the values and priorities that we hold dear as Edolites. They represent our commitment to building a prosperous, inclusive, and viable future for all.

“To our traditional rulers and religious leaders, we acknowledge your place in the development of our state, and we would ensure that under our watch, our ancestral heritage is promoted and preserved.

“It is time for us to rise above partisanship, sentiments and unite under the banner of progress and development. Let us all come together to build a brighter future for ourselves and for generations to come.

“My dear people of Edo State, this declaration is not just a political affair, it is a call to destiny, a call to become the heartbeat of this nation, not just in words, but indeed.

“I humbly seek your support, your trust, and your nomination in this upcoming election, as we embark on this journey together; united in our determination to make Edo State a better place for ourselves and generations to come. I am Philip Shaibu, your guy. Your one hundred per cent homeboy. Together, we will reignite the Edo spirit and transform our tomorrow.”
