    • Offers condolences over incident, Jigawa tragedy

Vice President Kashim Shettima has extended his heartfelt condolences to the people of Sokoto State following a tragic incident during a military operation targeting Lakurawa terrorist hideouts in Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in Silame Local Government Area.

About 10 villagers were said to have lost their lives on December 25, 2024, when the military targeted a logistics base of the Lakurawa insurgent group in the Silame area of Sokoto State, leaving many others injured.

The Vice President yesterday extended his heartfelt sympathy to families of those mistakenly hit by the military onslaught on the terrorist group, noting that it was one of those rare sad moments when innocent civilians are caught in crossfire in the ongoing efforts to rid the country of all forms of terror.

In a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said, “I would like to extend my deep sympathies and condolences to the Government and people of Sokoto State, particularly families of those who lost their lives in the coordinated joint operation by the air and land components of Operation Fansan Yamma to eliminate Lakurawa terrorist groups at Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in Silame Local Government Area.

“I must say we are sorry and dismayed at the civilian casualties incurred and the excruciating pain that ensues in these extremely difficult times. I call for understanding, especially when it is considered that our gallant men of the Armed Forces were fighting and paying the supreme price to protect the lives of those caught in the crossfire.

“My thoughts and prayers particularly go out to the relatives of those who perished in the tragic event. May Almighty God ease your pain and grant you the courage and patience to bear the loss.”

Senator Shettima on behalf of the military expressed regret over the incident, just as he solicited more support for the troops, noting that with useful information, the officers will maintain accuracy and precision in fishing out the terrorists from among innocent villagers they are staking their lives to protect.

He assured the people of the state of federal government’s support, vowing that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not rest on its oars until terror groups and other criminal elements are completely wiped out of the country.

“On behalf of our gallant officers, I apologize for this great loss. I urge you to continue to give our brave officers the assistance they need in carrying out their operations to ensure a safer country for all of us. We have all been impressed by the courage and dedication of our troops, and by the dignity and resilience which lies behind the determination to prevail against such monstrous evil.

“Security is not one man’s business. Together, we will surely make a difference as a people. I sincerely call for your support, especially from people in the flashpoints of the war against terror who have always helped the operations of our military.

“Let me assure you that the administration of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is hell-bent on weeding out what is left of terror elements in the country and will stop at nothing in ensuring a peaceful Nigeria where farmers work freely in their farms and all Nigerians go about their businesses and other activities without fear of attacks from agents of death.”

Meanwhile, Vice President Shettima at the weekend  led a delegation from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on a condolence visit to the government and people of Jigawa State on the passing of the mother and son of the state governor, Alhaji Umar Namadi.

Within 24 hours after the passing of his mother, Hajiya Mariam Namadi, on December 25, the governor suffered another tragedy, with the loss of his eldest son, Abdulwahab Namadi.

Senator Shettima was accompanied on the visit to Hadejia, Jigawa State, by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State; Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia; some members of the National Assembly from Jigawa State and top government functionaries.

Speaking during the condolence visit, the VP noted that “death is an inevitable destiny that is hanging on everyone’s neck”, even as he said, “We are all from Allah, and at the train station with our baggage waiting for the train. From where? From Allah, to where, to Allah. Our bags and baggage are our deeds in this world.”

Stating the purpose of their visit to the state, VP Shettima said, “We are here on a very sad note to condole with you over the loss of the matriarch of your family and pillar of support for you and followed sadly by that of your beloved son. May Allah grant the souls of the deceased eternal rest and Aljannah Firdaus.

“May Allah also grant the family the fortitude to bear these irreparable losses,” the VP further prayed.

    • Inaugurates national electrification, polio ad hoc committees

Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasised the critical role of the power sector in Nigeria’s quest for meaningful economic development, urging leaders to rise above differences and address the nation’s electricity challenges.

The Vice President stated this on Thursday when he inaugurated the National Economic Council (NEC) Ad Hoc Committee on National Electrification and NEC Ad Hoc Committee on Polio Eradication at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Speaking while inaugurating the ad hoc committee on National Electrification, Senator Shettima made reference to countries with similar challenges of energy insufficiency, such as Indonesia, India, South Africa, and Uganda, pointing out that they are already in the league of those at the forefront of post-industrial revolution.

According to a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said “one common thing with these countries and others in the post-industrial revolution community is that they have largely resolved the issue of energy insufficiency.

“There is no doubt that we cannot dream of meaningful national economic development without addressing the issue in the power sector and ensuring that Nigerians have accessible, available and affordable energy,” he stated.

Regretting that an estimated 40-70 percent of Nigerians have no formal access to electricity, VP Shettima said he is comforted by the knowledge that the calibre and experiences of state Governors and other members of the committee “will definitely change the narrative in a positive trajectory.”

He acknowledged the basic challenges in the nation’s power sector, especially the national grid which has been witnessing system collapse.

The VP, however, expressed hope that there will soon be significant improvement following the recent reforms in the energy sector which have opened the sector, “not only to the participation of, otherwise, excluded players, but also to attract investments, both foreign and local.

“I believe we are well endowed with resources, be it gas, hydro or solar, that allow us to have an optimal energy mix and leverage these resources to build a sector in a resilient manner that ensures energy security for every Nigerian,” he added.

In his remarks, Chairman of the NEC ad hoc committee on National Electrification and Cross River State Governor, Prince Bassey Edet Otu, noted that the Vice President has impaneled the committee with four terms of reference to change the ugly history of incessant national grid collapse in the country, noting that their next task is to get down to work, and do so assiduously until they produce credible, achievable and sustainable results.

He said, “In the command list, one, is to put an end to consistent grid collapse in the energy sector and to work towards deepening states’ engagement within the Electricity Reform Act 2023 to address the challenges in the power sector to the best expectation of Nigerians and the National Electrification Strategy and Implementation Plan.

“These tasks are tall but looking at the members of the committee, we are individually and collectively taller, especially in our avowed commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President and the golden ethos of nation-building.”

Nigeria cannot develop without addressing power crisis — VP Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has declared that there is no way Nigeria can dream of meaningful economic development without addressing the power sector crisis and ensuring the country has access to electricity and other affordable energy.

Shettima spoke on Thursday when he inaugurated the National Economic Council (NEC) ad-hoc committee on National Electrification and NEC ad-hoc Committee on Polio Eradication at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He also urged leaders in the country to rise above differences to confront the power sector crisis and become part of the reincarnation of Nigeria as an industrialised nation.

Inaugurating the ad-hoc committee on National Electrification, Shettima made reference to countries with similar challenges of energy insufficiency, such as Indonesia, India, South Africa, and Uganda, pointing out that they are already in the league of those at the forefront of post-industrial revolution.

“One common thing with these countries and others in the post-industrial revolution community is that they have largely resolved the issue of energy insufficiency.

“I believe we are well endowed with resources, be it gas, hydro or solar, that allow us to have an optimal energy mix and leverage these resources to build a sector in a resilient manner that ensures energy security for every Nigerian,” he added.

The Vice President urged members of the National Electrification ad hoc committee to come on board and work for the nation.

He said: “I wish you the best as you embark on this critical assignment, and I want to assure you of my availability as you discharge this onerous assignment. With this, I hereby inaugurate the NEC ad hoc committee on National Electrification Strategy and Implementation Plan.”

While inaugurating the NEC ad hoc committee on Polio Eradication, Senator Shettima urged members of the committee and stakeholders to reinvigorate efforts to confront the reemergence of the disease head-on.

He said: “If at all we have relied heavily on assistance from partners to address the devastation caused to our people by this disease, it is time to take a determined step to eradicate this disease from our people. I am confident we can do it if we work collectively and collaboratively with partners and all the stakeholders.”

The Vice President discouraged short-term measures in tackling polio, urging the committee members to come up with long-term measures, including the local production of polio vaccines.

He said: “We cannot fight this virus, Your Excellencies, by constantly responding to its recurrence, as short-term measures will always fail. We must develop a futuristic plan, and this calls for a long-term approach to containing the virus.

“It is in this regard that we must take seriously the overarching need for the local production of polio vaccines. This, I believe, will ensure that we take a long-term view of the containment of the virus and ultimately its extermination in the future.

“It is clear that we should never rest on our oars, as the virus keeps mutating and reemerging in new forms such as the new variant in Kano and Sokoto, but it is heartening that these states have taken firm action to confront the new variant”.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the NEC ad hoc committee on National Electrification and Cross River State Governor, Prince Bassey Edet Otu, noted that the Vice President has empanelled the committee with four terms of reference to change the ugly history of incessant national grid collapse in the country, noting that their next task is to get down to work, and do so assiduously until they produce credible, achievable and sustainable results.

“These tasks are tall but looking at the members of the committee, we are individually and collectively taller, especially in our avowed commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President and the golden ethos of nation-building.”

On his part, the chairman of the Polio Eradication ad hoc committee and Gombe state governor, Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya, thanked the Vice President for giving members the opportunity to serve in the committee, assuring that they will do all their best to end the reemergence of polio in the country.

Governor Yahaya who is also Chairman of the Northern State Governors Forum said: “On behalf of members of this committee, I would like to appreciate you for making this choice of putting up this committee that includes this membership. And going through the committee’s membership, one knows full well that it is really by design and not by accident because you want to address a critical issue, and you, indeed, picked the right people to address the issues.

“The governors, as you said, are the prime movers, and the likes of Aliko Dangote, and, in fact, under the leadership of the Honorable Minister, this task of eradicating Polio and taking it out of Nigeria will be made easy once we are able to do the needful.”

Members of the NEC ad hoc committee on National Electrification include Governors of Katsina, Gombe, Osun, Imo and Plateau States; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning; Minister of Power; Special Adviser to the President on NEC/Climate Change; Special Adviser to the President; Managing Director/CEO of Rural Electrification Agency (REA); CEO, Nigeria Governors’ Forum; Managing Director/CEO of Niger Delta Power Holding Company; FGN Power Company, and NEC Secretariat.

He said: “It behooves us now in office to find out why they went under and how we can ensure that it does not happen again. And the only way we can do that is by policy frameworks to ensure that they survive. We can’t keep giving them money; then, we must make the business to get conducive environment for them to survive.

“One of the key elements that we recognise as a government is to ensure that we unlock the international markets on aircraft, and at the heart of that is to ensure the full compliance with the tenants of the Cape Town Convention.”

Shettima praised local operators for their resilience, despite the excruciating business environment.

The Vice President noted that the Cape Town Convention had proven to be a transformative legal framework, harmonising diverse global legal systems to foster predictability and stability for aviation stakeholders.

“For Nigeria, this convention has not only enhanced our global standing but has also opened doors to increased investment and growth in aviation financing.

“The recently issued Federal High Court Practice Directions and Advisory Circular mark significant milestones in our journey to align with international best practices. These initiatives have streamlined legal processes, enhanced jurisdictional clarity, and improved Nigeria’s compliance index, positioning our nation among global leaders in aviation governance,” he said.

Keyamo listed some challenges in the sector and what the ministry had been doing to overcome them.
