In a statement issued on Thursday by spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President described the incident as a devastating loss, not only for the victims’ families, but also for the state and the nation.

He lamented that what should have been a day of celebration for the graduates had turned into an unimaginable tragedy.

“The loss of these bright, young lives is not just a loss for their families, but a loss for Borno State and our nation.

“These graduates embodied hope, promise, and aspirations of a brighter future. Their untimely departure leaves an irreplaceable void.” the Vice President said.

We will tackle migration challenges, Shettima assures

…reminds South Africans of Nigeria’s role in fight for freedom

The Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, has assured that the federal government is committed to tackling challenges of migration.

The VP, while commending the contributions of Nigerian immigrants to the global economy, said Nigeria accounts for the highest of all diaspora remittances in West Africa.

According to him, Nigerians in the diaspora accounted for $21.9 billion in remittances in 2022, representing 64% of all remittances in West Africa.

He added that Nigerian migrants have become global ambassadors who excel in technology, medicine, sports, creative arts, and other human endeavours.

The Vice President spoke on Monday during the 10th Annual National Migration Dialogue with the theme, “Beyond Borders: Celebrating Migrants’ Legacy, Protecting Their Rights,” at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said there was need for Nigerians outside the country to be proud and be good ambassadors of the country they find themselves.

He said: “Migration is not just a crossover from one geography to another. It is a critical driver of global and national development. In 2022 alone, Nigerians in the diaspora accounted for $21.9 billion in remittances, representing 64% of all remittances in West Africa.

This is a testament to the invaluable economic contributions of Nigerian migrants.

“Beyond financial remittances, our migrants have become global ambassadors, excelling in fields such as technology, medicine, sports and creative arts. Nigerian startup founded by migrants attracted over $800 million in investments in 2022. This underscores the transformative potential of our people across the world.”

He also hinted that Nigeria is both a country of origin and a destination for migrants, with over 1.3 million international migrants living within.

Shettima while cautioning against the constant challenges of irregular migration, stated that the country repatriated about 10,000 of its citizens detained for migration offences in 2024 alone.

“We must acknowledge that irregular migration remains a persistent challenge. In 2024, we have already returned and reintegrated no fewer than 10,000 Nigerians who had been detained for immigration offences in African and European countries.

“These figures highlight the vulnerabilities that come with migration and emphasize the need for coordinated efforts to address these challenges while harnessing migration’s potential for economic growth and resilience.

“The federal government of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu remains resolute in addressing migration challenges. Earlier this year, at the United Nations General Assembly, Mr. President reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM), a vital framework to ensure that migration benefits all while protecting the rights of migrants.

“Our government’s response has been multi-faceted, involving several agencies and robust partnerships. The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), under the capable leadership of Honourable Federal Commissioner Tijani Aliyu Ahmed, continues to lead Nigeria’s migration coordination efforts.

“This includes the ongoing review of the National Migration Policy to align with global best practices. Additionally, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has demonstrated unwavering commitment to innovation in border management, adopting modern technologies and policies to streamline processes and enhance efficiency.”

Shettima added that the introduction of electronic gates at major airports to revolutionize the traveller experience and ensure faster, more secure clearance and the launch of e-passports, designed with advanced security features, are some of the steps taken to address migration challenges.

Shettima, while calling on Nigerians outside to be good ambassadors, said the country is proud of Kemi Badenoch despite her comments.

He, however, noted that her comments are not the sacred truth.

Shettima said: “There is a need for us to respect and cherish immigrants. Migrants are the source of life in all societies. Rishi Sunak, the former British Prime Minister, originally from India, a very brilliant young man, he never denigrated his nation of ancestry, nor poured venoms on India.

“Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the Conservative Party; we are proud of her. Despite her efforts in denigrating her nation of origin, she is entitled to her opinions. She has every right to remove the Kemi from her name. But that does not underscore the fact that the greatest black nation on earth is the nation called Nigeria.

“I’m a proud Nigerian. Kemi Badenoch is entitled to her own opinion, but her opinion is not the sacred truth.”

He also reacted to the call for impeachment of the President of South Africa following the Visa rights given to Nigerians.

He said: “80% of African migration remains within the continent, presenting a largely untapped opportunity of regional integration and economic development. It is saddening to note that some South Africans are clamouring for the impeachment of their president for enhancing the Visa rights of Nigerians.

“Unless they suffer from memory amnesia, Nigeria, more than any other country, contributed to the liberation of the South African nation.

“We are not gloating, but we are just reminding them, let them know that the trajectory of global growth is Africa and Nigeria will make a destination. If Nigeria works, Africa works, and Nigerians are not going to other parts of the nation to become beggars.

“Yes, we have the bad eggs engaging in anti-social activities, but Nigerians generally are very proud and productive people; the most commonly mobile immigrant community in the United States are Nigerian Americans. So let no one take us for granted. Let no nation take us to the cleaners.”

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, said Nigeria’s headship of the Euro-African Dialogue on Migration and Development, the Rabat Process in 2025 will allow the country to showcase its leadership role in migration space globally.

He said: “Using the Rabat process, we drive all the processes to ensure that all migrants have their rights protected. We also aim to amplify the narratives of African migrants as drivers of innovation and development, while fostering stronger partnerships to address migration challenges.”

The Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Tijani Ahmed, said migration is not only a story of displacement or return but also one of resilience, innovation, and contributions to society.

On the resilience of Nigerians and the contributions to the countries of destination, Ahmed said: “In the United States, Nigerian-Americans have distinguished themselves through exceptional achievements. Their median income is reportedly higher than the national average and surpasses that of several other ethnic groups.

Furthermore, 29% of Nigerian Americans hold graduate degrees, a remarkable statistic compared to the 11% recorded for the overall U.S. population. These accomplishments underscore the importance of education and resilience within the Nigerian diaspora.”

He also revealed that Nigeria currently hosts over 100,000 refugees and asylum seekers.

On the voluntary repatriation of Nigerian refugees, he said: “The Commission has identified 53,000 Nigerian Refugees residing in Cameroon, 14,000 in Niger, and 21,000 in Chad. Out of this number, 14,000 Nigerian refugees in Cameroon have expressed their willingness to return home, with 7,000 specifically seeking an unconditional return.

“The Commission is currently developing strategies to facilitate the safe and dignified return of these refugees while highlighting the pressing need for increased funding and material support to enhance its capacity to fulfil this critical national mandate effectively”.

Shettima, who was represented by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, said technology must serve as a tool for progress, not a weapon of destruction.

Shettima tasks banks on cash availability

The Vice-President, Sen. Kashim Shettima has urged Nigerian Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) to ensure seamless availability of Naira notes to the banking public.

Shettima made the call on Friday in Abuja, at the 2024 Bankers ‘ Committee Retreat.

He was represented by Tope Fasua, Special Adviser on Economic Affairs, Office of the Vice-President.

He urged the committee to address some unwholesome practices by some Point of Sale (PoS) agents which impeded the availability of cash.

According to him, the scarcity of cash is constituting an impediment to financial inclusion.

“We would like to take this opportunity to appeal strongly to the committee to urgently clear up thorny issues in the sector, some of which are impeding the efforts at financial and economic inclusion.

” Nigerians complain bitterly that they are unable to access even minimal cash when most needed.

“There seems to have been some moral hazard and adverse selection problem with the involvement of street-side PoS merchants.

” Nigerians complain about high and arbitrary charges and exploitation by rogue agents, which we are sure you will be able to tackle with concerted efforts,” he said.

Shettima also said that there was a need for more initiatives towards the financing of MSMEs.

He urged them to continue to support the efforts of the Federal Government in the area of consumer credit culture.

According to Shettima, Nigerian banks have shown dominance in the West African region and beyond.

He cited the concept of new capability development as
propounded by Prof. Ricardo Haussman of the Harvard Kennedy School.

“It suggested that a country should try using technology to export capabilities that it sees as a comparative advantage.

“Banking is one sector we have excelled at over the years. It is, therefore, a valid strategy for you to consolidate upon, as you continue to
    excel.

“The recent opening of Nigerian bank branches in France is a good testimony in this direction,” he said.

Shettima urged the committee to continue to be at the cutting edge of risk management, and to develop robust responses to the changing face and pace of banking and finance.

“This has greatly transmogrified in recent times, with the incursion of different types of FINTECHs, Neobanks, agency banks and other arrangements directed at improving financial inclusion.

“There are also the implications of cryptocurrency and decentralized finance on banking as we know it.

” These developments have profound effects on the retail segment of the market, and so our banks must continue to be deft and nimble even in the face of higher capital requirements,” he said.

Shettima said that the unification of the Naira exchange rates had coincided with some weakening in the currency, which in turn has spurred some behavioural
    adjustments among our people.

He said, ”We see that today, Nigerians have cut back on some foreign travels, foreign education has slowed down to the extent that many foreign universities are feeling the pains.

“There is now more focus on local educational institutions, and many world-standard facilities have now debuted in Nigeria.

“The weakening of the Naira has also resulted in a spike in exports as the Marshall-Lerner principle in economics has kicked in for
    Nigeria.

“The principle states that a nation is likely to see an increase in exports and gain from currency devaluation if exports are price elastic.”

According to Shettima, a weaker currency will discourage imports that are price elastic and may spur local value-addition and production.

He added, ” Whereas our main export, crude oil , is not price elastic, but our non-oil exports have delivered.

“In the first quarter of 2024 Nigeria saw a trade surplus of four billion dollars, which increased to 4.5 billion dollars in the second quarter.

“The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate of 3.46 per cent seen in the third quarter was driven largely by non-oil exports as well.

” This is a validation of the stated commitment of the government to diversify the economy. ”(NAN)

Specifically, he declared to the investors in Kano that the Federal Government would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that investors achieve their dreams.

Speaking on Friday when he visited the Mamuda Group, a Nigerian multi-industry conglomerate at their Kano headquarters, the Vice President said with the efforts and commitments of President Tinubu, investors’ trust and confidence are gradually returning.

VP Shettima drew their attention to the government’s continued promotion of sustainability and progress for investment opportunities in Nigeria.

He expressed satisfaction and confidence in the developmental strides and initiatives of the company, observing that the story of Mamuda Group is one of resilience, zeal, and belief in the Nigerian dream.

In a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said “we want to commend you. The President speaks your language – the language of commerce, the language of business.

He commended the Group for being one of the largest employers of labour in Northern Nigeria, with about 13,000 employees, even as he expressed optimism that with the company’s upcoming developmental initiatives, its employment strength will reach 23,000 in no distant time.

VP Shettima continued: “In Nigeria, in Africa, he who employs 13,000 people is invariably impacting on 130,0000 lives. This is why we are here with the Deputy Governor of Kano, with the Director General (DG), and with the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC).

“So, come to Abuja and continue the conversation with the NIPC, with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, and be rest assured that the government will give you full backing to accomplish your dreams.

“In terms of infrastructure, I have had discussions on our way here and the issue of the infrastructural deficit you are facing in terms of access roads will be sorted out”.

The Vice President further applauded the Mamuda Group for generating about 31 megawatts of electricity used in running the company, noting that the commitment to generate more is highly commendable and worthy of emulation.

Earlier, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Mamuda Group, Hassan Hammoud, commended the leadership and vision that President Tinubu has brought to Nigeria, saying “the last couple of years has been undeniably challenging for our nation, with economic turbulence testing industries and individuals alike.

“However, thanks to the steadfast efforts of the federal government under your guidance. We are now witnessing signs of recovery and renewed hope for a brighter future. Your presence here today reaffirms the government’s commitment to supporting industries like ours, which are the backbone of national development.

“Mamuda Group is proud to stand as a testament to what can be achieved through resilience, innovation, and public-private partnership. With over 13,000 employees, we are not just a company but a community that takes pride in uplifting lives and building a stronger economy.”

Hammoud appealed to the federal government to continue to enact favourable policies that would enable industries to thrive and support them in areas such as tax, infrastructure and access to financing.

On arrival in Kano, Vice President Kashim Shettima earlier attended the wedding of the children of the Chief Executive Officer of Ammasco Group of Companies and Alhaji Abdulmanaf Yunusa, President of Azman Group of Companies.

Shettima launches 2024 Nigeria Economic Report, promises inclusive growth

Vice President Kashim Shettima has launched the 2024 Nigeria Economic Report, highlighting the administration’s strategic reforms and commitment to inclusive growth under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to him, the strategic policy interventions of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are already yielding positive results, with more optimistic projections for 2025.

Senator Shettima disclosed this on Friday during a one-day technical workshop on the Year 2024 Economic Review at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Vice President who was represented at the event by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of the Vice President), Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, said the report is “a pragmatic synopsis of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bold and impactful strides under the canopy of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said: “We are not just compiling statistics but constructing a narrative of economic resilience and strategic transformation.

“Every data point and every analysis represents our commitment to turning the tide of economic challenges into opportunities for national growth. We are laying the groundwork for sustainable economic development that will create opportunities for every Nigerian,” he added.

Earlier, Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, said the Ministry would drive Nigeria’s economic growth with the abundant gas deposits in the country.

“We have 209 trillion cubic feet of gas. Today, if Nigeria takes advantage of this, we will grow our economy to the level that would be envied. Nigeria will take its rightful position in the gas economy in the continent,” he stated.

The Minister urged Nigerians to key into the CNG initiative of the President, noting that this is cleaner, safer and environment-friendly, pointing out that though the kits may be expensive, there are incentives provided to make it affordable.

In her remarks, the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, noted that Nigeria has an untapped creative industry potential.

Musawa said her ministry is the first of its kind to focus on transforming creative content into economic opportunity, even as she stressed while Nigeria boasts of unique cultural talents, the creative industry represents a critical pathway for economic diversification beyond petroleum.

Also, the Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, said the tax reform proposals are aimed at transforming Nigeria’s economic landscape.

Oyedele emphasized that these reforms are not just a technical exercise but a commitment to equity, efficiency, and economic transformation.

He acknowledged concerns raised by stakeholders, assuring that ongoing engagement will address potential challenges.

During a panel discussion, Special Adviser to the President on Economic Affairs, Dr. Tope Fasua, described 2024 as a critical year of economic reforms.

“Reforms are never easy. It’s like the process of planting and waiting for them to grow and for harvest,” Fasua said, explaining that these interventions have been sweeping, including the “removal of fuel subsidies, CBN ways and means, unification of foreign exchange markets, and critical tax reforms.

“The economic indicators are promising, with Nigeria’s GDP growing 3.46% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2024 – the fastest growth since late 2023. Going forward, we are going to be seeing leaps in growth and the worst is over for the economy. We’re looking at a higher growth rate, more stable naira, and lowered inflation,” he added.

In the power sector, Special Adviser to the President on Power Infrastructure, Sadiq Wanka, said, “I’ve never been more optimistic about the power sector because the foundations of a reinvigorated power sector are being laid.”

The government’s initiatives include increased liberalisation through the Electricity Act which has decentralised the power sector, allowing states to regulate and develop their own local electricity markets, and the Presidential Metering Initiative aimed at eliminating estimated billing.

On his part, Technical Adviser to the President on Economic and Financial Inclusion, Dr. Nurudeen Zauro, emphasized that “all eight items on the Renewed Hope Agenda are built on inclusion.”

He explained that the government has significantly reduced financial exclusion, established a dedicated office, and signed the Aso Accord to accelerate financial inclusion.

Also, Special Assistant to the President on Export Promotion, Aliyu Bunu Sheriff, noted that the administration is focused on moving Nigeria from a consumption-based to a production-driven economy.

“Revenue from the export of manufactured goods rose by 118.33% to ₦749.52 billion in H1 2024, compared to ₦343.29 billion in H1 2023,” Sheriff said.

He maintained that the government’s initiatives aim to position Nigeria as a key player in the global halal economy, potentially adding $1.5 billion to GDP by 2027.
