    Shettima: The enigma @58

    Ismail Omipidan

He is the one who has originated the heavens and the earth, and when He wills to (originate) a thing, He only says to it: ‘Be’, and it becomes.”

The above quote from Quran Chapter 2, Verse 117, appears apt in analysing the political trajectory of Nigeria’s current Vice President and ex-Borno Governor, Senator Kashim Shettima.

I have known him for 23 years now. I met him in 2001 when he was still a banker in the course of my duty tour in Borno State. He joined politics formally in 2007. As a commissioner in Borno State, he served in about four different ministries, including Finance, Agriculture, and Education. By 2011, he was elected the governor of the State on the platform of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). He spent two terms. By 2019, he was elected a Senator to represent Borno Central Senatorial District and by 2023, he was elected alongside President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) as the Vice President of Nigeria, a position some thought was reserved for them, forgetting that what Allah has destined for Mr. A cannot miss him.

Historically, until 2015, Borno State had never been in the same party with the government at the centre. Therefore, any time an election was approaching, the need for Borno to be brought into the mainstream politics was usually the campaign thrust of the opposition party in the state.

As the opposition NPN did in 1983, in the build-up to the 2015 electioneering, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which has been the major opposition party in the state since 1999, rallied most Borno elites together and impressed it on them to see reason to kick out the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the state, and support the PDP so that the party could form government at the state level.

The PDP promoters at the time said it was only when the party was allowed to form the government in Borno State that the state could enjoy the type of federal presence it deserved, and it was the only time it could get the full backing of the federal government in its fight against insurgency in the state.

Interestingly, Shettima’s predecessor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff’s defection to the PDP was seen as a major morale booster, for the PDP’s quest to win the state, ahead of 2015, with Sheriff himself boasting to ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan, who was the PDP’s presidential candidate at the time that he would ensure he delivered the state to him and the PDP, bragging that “Mr. President, hold me responsible if Borno is not delivered to the PDP,” adding that the APC was not going to get up to 30 percent of the total votes.

Rather than engaging in self-praise, Shettima quietly went to work, and by the time the election was won and lost in 2015, the PDP could not even secure the required 25 percent votes for the party’s presidential candidate, Gooodluck Jonathan, as Shettima delivered 473, 543 votes to the APC presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, representing about 97 percent of the total valid votes cast, leaving Jonathan with just 25, 640 votes.

So, once the presidential election was won and lost in March 2015, signaling APC’s win at the centre, the PDP’s quest to govern the state made little or no meaning to an average Borno person, as the few coverts it had gotten saw no further need to continue to support the PDP, since the APC which they intended on send-packing, had won the presidential election.

Again, in 2019, in the entire states in the north, Borno was the only state that improved from its 2015 performance at the presidential election. For instance, while President Buhari’s votes dropped significantly in most of the northern states where he previously won, in Borno, the votes increased by about 400,000, as Buhari polled 836, 496 votes to defeat former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s candidate, who garnered 71, 788 votes.

Shettima is usually underrated because of his quiet nature, which is seen by many who do not know this enigma, as a weakness.  However, for those of us who know him very well, beneath that quiet nature, lies his greatest strength as he deploys it effectively to achieve results where others have failed.

He was 45 when he became Borno State Governor in 2011. And he did very well. But those who believe they have the power of life and death politically referred to him as a “small boy” in private and in public. They attempted to dislodge him in 2015. God showed His hands: Shettima beat them to their game.

Again, in the build-up to the 2019 elections, they attempted to frustrate the emergence of Prof. Zulum as the candidate of the APC, insisting Borno must be rescued from the hands of ‘yara’ (small boys), forgetting that “these small boys ” stood up to be counted when it mattered most. As it happened in 2015, God again showed His Hands: Shettima again beat them to their game in 2019 and, in the end, Prof. Zulum went on to win the governorship contest.

Even though Asiwaju Bola Tinubu had long before emerging as the 2023 presidential candidate of the APC  decided on the choice of his running mate, some persons attempted to play God the moment they realised the pendulum was dangling on Shettima. They mobilised to the Holy Land to pray against Shettima’s emergence, but because God had decreed it would be, it came to pass.

As his friend and one of his confidants, I know that his being an unabashed pro-Tinubu did not start overnight. It dates back to pre-2015. He shared a lot of insights with me about some of the leg works they embarked upon with Tinubu locally and internationally in the build-up to sacking a ruling government in 2015. It was Shettima who first told me about the Tinubu presidential project in January 2019. The rest is now history.

Our Vice President, as you celebrate your birthday again today, I pray Almighty Allah continues to guide your steps and provide you with the knowledge and wisdom to navigate through our country’s murky political waters.

I pray those demons that instigate mistrust between the President and the Vice President flee from the Villa. I pray Allah also grants you the knowledge, wisdom, and courage to identify them and flee from them whenever they come calling.

Happy birthday to you my dear friend, brother, and benefactor, Vice President Kashim Shettima. Allah ya kara zumunci, sir.

Shettima calls for stronger ties between FG, traditional institutions

Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasised the need for stronger ties between the Federal Government and traditional institutions, recognising their crucial role in national unity and stability.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration to engaging royal fathers as key stakeholders in national development and social cohesion.

Speaking on Friday during a visit to Ningi Emirate in Bauchi State, the Vice President offered condolences for the late Emir of Ningi, HRH Alhaji Yunusa Muhammed DanYaya.

Shettima also congratulated the newly installed Emir, HRH Alhaji Haruna Yunusa Danyaya, who is the eldest son of the late Emir, noting that traditional “institutions are not only the custodians of our cultures, values, and history but the very backbone of our society.”

He pointed out that traditional institutions play a crucial role in maintaining national unity, societal stability, and serve as a reminder of the nation’s origins as well as offer inspiration to see the essence of our diversity.

His words: “On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, myself, and the entire government of Nigeria, I express our deepest condolences for the loss of an emir who left a legacy of integrity, service, and peace. And as we congratulate you, HRH Alhaji Haruna Yunusa Danyaya, on your assumption of office, we pledge our sincerest support for your reign.

“These institutions serve as a reminder of our origins and offer inspiration to see the essence of our diversity in all that we do. The Emirate, under your late father’s stewardship, was a guiding light for many, and his contributions will not be forgotten.”

VP Shettima praised the late Emir for his 88 years of service to the nation, recalling that “not only did he become the longest-reigning Emir in the history of Ningi, but he also served our nation in various capacities even before his enthronement”.

Addressing the newly installed Emir, the VP pledged the federal government’s support, just as he emphasised the importance of continuity in leadership.

“We stand with you as partners in progress, and our doors are always open to our traditional rulers for wisdom, guidance, and advice,” he said.

The Vice President also highlighted the strong connections between the federal government and the Ningi Emirate, mentioning several Bauchi State natives serving in the Presidency, including his ADC, N.Y Sule and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Digital Media and National Emergency (Office of the Vice President), Malam Ahmed Ishaq Ningi.

Earlier, the Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, thanked Vice President Shettima for visiting the state, describing him as a man of modesty and humility who stands out as a leader who respects everybody.

He said, “On behalf of myself, the government, and the people of Bauchi State and Ningi Emirate, we wish to welcome you to Bauchi State. You are here as one of the leaders of this country.”

Governor Mohammed also described the Vice President’s visit as “a double-edged sword,” to condole with the people and also congratulate the new Emir, the eldest son of the late Emir, Alhaji Haruna Danyaya.

On his part, the new Emir of Ningi thanked the Vice President for visiting to commiserate with them over the death of his father and to meet with the Emirate Council.

He also thanked Governor Mohammed for accepting the recommendation of the Emirate Council to install him as his father’s successor.

Among the dignitaries at the event were the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Ali Pate; Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Hon. Abubakar Y. Suleiman; Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of the Vice President), Sen. Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia; Special Adviser to the President on General Duties, Aliyu Modibbo Umar; district heads from the area councils, and other senior government officials.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima, on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, visited Kaduna State to commiserate with the Kaduna State Government and family of the late Hon. Justice Tanimu Zailani, former Chief Judge of Kaduna State.

VP Shettima who expressed sadness over the demise of Justice Zailani, prayed that Allah grant him Aljannah Firdaus, and grant the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

“I’m here at the behest of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who called me from China and directed me to go to Kaduna and condole with the Kaduna State Government and the immediate family of the deceased.

“Hon. Justice Tanimu Zailani was a very good ally of President Tinubu and my humble self. His death was a very painful loss to us. We pray may Allah overlook his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest.”

Justice Zailani served as the Head of the Kaduna State Judiciary and was the Chief Judge of the High Court of Kaduna State from 2013 to 2018.

The upgrade project is a testament to APM Terminals’ vision of lifting standards of efficiency, reliability, and local excellence in Nigeria.

It encompasses a wide-ranging transformation, including extensive yard expansion, state-of-the-art equipment acquisition, and a modern office complex.

This, he said, “will ultimately improve our national maritime traffic. I will like to extend our profound gratitude and commendation to the management of West Africa Container Terminal for their substantial investment in this vital infrastructure.

“Your commitment to advancing Nigeria’s maritime sector is truly commendable and serves as a shining example of foreign direct investment into our nation’s economy.”

The expanded yard space, which has almost doubled, not only provides for bigger space but also lifts safety standards through optimised container stacking, minimising the risk of collisions. State-of-the-art access control and CCTV systems create an unparalleled secure environment for cargo and personnel. The updated Traffic Management plan also contributes to a safer environment.

A ground-breaking 1MW solar power generation facility installed at WACT showcases APM Terminals’ dedication to decarbonizing its operations.

During the inauguration, the Chief Operating Officer of APM Terminals, Olaf Gelhausen, said, “This $115 million investment is a bold statement of our faith in Nigeria’s economic potential. As Africa’s largest economy and most populous nation, Nigeria stands on the brink of remarkable growth.

“We are proud to be catalysts in this journey, transforming WACT into a world-class facility that is lifting standards to drive trade and prosperity across West Africa.”

He added, “The transformative upgrade project at WACT embodies APM Terminals’ vision of lifting standards in the industry. We’re enhancing capacity, redefining customer experience, and forging stronger partnerships with the Nigerian government to lift global trade.”

APM Terminals is deeply committed to Nigeria, with its two container terminals in Lagos and Onne handling about half of the containers going in and out of Nigeria.

WACT is one of the best-performing terminals in West Africa, offering customers safe, reliable, and efficient services.

APM Terminals has also intensified its talks with the Nigerian administration and port authority to make its plans for future investments concrete.

A proposal to invest more than $500 million in the future is built on the foundation of a long-term partnership.

Besides operating highly efficient terminals, the company intends to contribute to the development of the local communities and bring opportunities for growth and new prospects for Nigerians.

Shettima seeks stronger alliance to end poverty, improve lives among Nigerians

Vice President Kashim Shettima has called for a formidable alliance among government stakeholders and development partners to eradicate poverty and enhance the quality of life among Nigerians.

But he said this cannot happen if those involved in governance do not align with one another to create an environment where every Nigerian has the opportunity to thrive.

Shettima spoke yesterday during the 144th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The Vice President acknowledged that though the problems inherited by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration cannot be solved overnight, despite the long-term solutions in progress, Nigerians are in urgent need of quick and impactful measures.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Information in the Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, VP Shettima said: “Our commitment to alleviating poverty and enhancing the quality of life for all Nigerians will never materialise if we do not align with one another. We must strive to create an environment where every Nigerian has the opportunity to thrive.

“This includes not only addressing immediate needs but also building sustainable systems that empower our citizens to become self-reliant and prosperous.”

The Vice President lauded the efforts of development partners, particularly the co-chairs of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr. Bill Gates, and the Chairman of Dangote Group of Companies, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, who attended the NEC meeting.

“Mr. Gates, in particular, has been a steadfast friend of Nigeria, contributing immensely to our nation’s inclusive economic growth and the well-being of our people in both tumult and tranquility. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recently approved a significant investment — the Nigeria Cassava Investment Accelerator (NCIA).

“This initiative, championed by my office and hosted by the Lagos Business School in partnership with the Boston Consulting Group, sets out to revolutionise our cassava industry, an essential pillar of our economy and food security,” he said.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasised the need for a formidable alliance among government stakeholders and development partners to eradicate poverty and enhance the quality of life for Nigerians.

This, he said, will never happen if all those involved in the business of governance do not align with one another to create an environment where every Nigerian has the opportunity to thrive.

Shettima who spoke on Wednesday during the 144th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, suggested ways to address the immediate needs of the citizens, including building sustainable systems that empower them to become self-reliant and prosperous.

He however acknowledged that even though the problems inherited by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu cannot be solved overnight despite the long-term solutions in progress, Nigerians are in urgent need of quick, impactful measures.

According to a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Information, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said: “our commitment to alleviating poverty and enhancing the quality of life for all Nigerians will never materialize if we do not align with one another. He said they have invested enormous resources into the welfare of Nigerians, spanning critical areas such as health, nutrition, agriculture, and education.

He stated: “Their philanthropy is not seasonal but a steadfast commitment that continues to shape our nation’s future. We did not survive the lowest points of our journey as a nation by the proactivity of the government alone; we did so because we remained partners in rain and sunshine.

“So, permit me to once again extend the nation’s deepest gratitude to our guests, whose empathy has always shone through whenever they are needed.

“Mr. Gates, in particular, has been a steadfast friend of Nigeria, contributing immensely to our nation’s inclusive economic growth and the well-being of our people in both tumult and tranquility. For the state governments, the Vice President said as sub-nationals in the federation, they are all “stakeholders in redefining the future” of Nigeria.

He continued: “We are gathered here because none of us can fulfill the goals of guaranteeing the survival of our people in isolation. Whether by expanding access to quality education, improving healthcare, or offering skills training and job opportunities, it is clear that each one of us has the power to influence policy and decisions at various levels.

“Our success relies on recognizing the socio-economic threats that have pulled us down the development index and, more importantly, on our resolve to walk the talk.”

Underscoring how critical investing in food security is, VP Shettima expressed delight with the efforts and reforms made so far by state governors to boost agriculture.

“However, we must not overlook the state of nutrition in our nation, which has led to stunting and other health challenges. This is a crisis that demands our unified attention and action. The future of this nation hinges on the health and well-being of our children,” he added.

On his part, Bill Gates reiterated his bet on the incredible potential of Nigerians, noting that “Nigeria’s economic leaders have done some difficult, but necessary things, like unifying the exchange rate.

“The next great hurdle is raising revenue. I understand this is a politically sensitive area where Nigerians are struggling. Incomes have fallen. Prices have soared. And like in many other countries, people are protesting.”

However, the agenda of the meeting, which includes the 36 state governors, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and other government officials, has not yet been disclosed.

The meeting comes as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) accuses the federal government of breaking a promise not to increase petrol prices.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said organized Labour accepted a minimum wage of ₦70,000 in July based on assurances from the government that there would be no further rise in fuel costs.

A source said Gates is in the meeting to talk to them about issues of nutrition and vaccinations.
