Vice President Kashim Shettima has announced that the federal government’s health sector reforms have attracted over $4.8 billion in potential investments, signaling a strong commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s healthcare system.

According to him, the investments are part of the commitment of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to revitalising the country’s healthcare system.

Disclosing this yesterday at the commissioning and grand opening of Sahad Hospitals in Abuja, Senator Shettima outlined a comprehensive strategy to address longstanding challenges and propel Nigeria’s healthcare system into the future.

“Our health sector calls upon us all to unite. The promise of this day is one we cannot overlook. It is through such collaboration and shared dedication that we can guarantee every Nigerian receives the care and support they deserve,” he declared.

According to a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Information, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President noted that the health sector reforms under the Tinubu administration are anchored on a robust roadmap designed to tackle persistent issues that have plagued the system for decades.

He said, “This Administration’s ambitious health sector reforms, which have already attracted over $4.8 billion in potential investments, signal a strong commitment to revitalising our healthcare system.

“These reforms are anchored on a comprehensive roadmap designed to address longstanding challenges, and central to this are four key pillars: transforming healthcare governance, improving population health outcomes, unlocking the healthcare value chain, and strengthening health security.”

Detailing the government’s strategy, Senator Shettima highlighted initiatives launched by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Ali Pate saying, “We have set out to achieve this by boosting domestic production of essential medical supplies and drugs, and by strengthening primary healthcare through the doubling of fully functional centres across the nation.”

The Vice President acknowledged the challenges that remain, regretting that “Nigerians continue to grapple with pressing healthcare challenges, such as surging costs of medicines, long hospital waiting times, and a shortage of health workers.”

He emphasised that the full impact of the reforms, particularly in improving access to quality healthcare, hinges on private sector involvement.

“Our private sector is a critical part of the solution, especially in the face of the long-standing brain drain among our medical workforce.

“Investing in the health sector engages the talents and skills of our citizens, generating numerous job opportunities for graduates and technicians. This is a notable aspect of our national development narrative,” the Vice President explained.

Senator Shettima revealed that the National Economic Council (NEC), which he chairs, has prioritised investments in developing Nigeria’s human capital, with health and nutrition being key thematic areas.

“Each of our state governors is fully on board. We have all acknowledged that no nation can optimise its opportunities without investing in its healthcare, and for us, this is only the beginning,” he assured.

Reiterating the administration’s commitment to the goal, the VP said, “We welcome this intervention, not just because it aligns with the agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has demonstrated his commitment to unlocking Nigeria’s healthcare value chain, but also because of its far-reaching implications for our national development.

“We stand prepared to move forward together into the future, and I assure you that the government will continue to be your steadfast partner in this effort to serve the nation and humanity, with full support to achieve our shared goals.”

The Vice President described the Chairman/Founder of Sahad Group of Companies, Alhaji Ibrahim Mijinyawa, as a good and trustworthy businessman, even as he recounted how he intervened when Sahad Stores Ltd was locked up by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).

    • Benue hub to create 48,000 jobs annually

Vice President Kashim Shettima yesterday reaffirmed that President Bola  Tinubu’s promises to entrepreneurs are not mere rhetoric, as he commissioned the Ultra-Modern MSME Fashion Clinic & ICT Hubs in Makurdi, Benue State.

He expressed confidence that the hub will match global standards, with the potential to create roughly 48,000 jobs annually in the state.

Represented by Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Office of the Vice President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, Shettima stated that the commissioning of the dual-purpose MSME Clinic proves that the administration’s commitments to entrepreneurs are genuine and tangible.

He emphasized that strong intergovernmental partnerships are crucial for achieving durable interventions, expressing delight at the successful completion of the project.

The Benue Fashion and ICT Hub is part of the federal government’s initiatives to support MSME clusters across various industries, providing a conducive environment for businesses to thrive and create employment opportunities.

According to a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Information, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima noted that the speed at which the hub was built after the MSMEs Clinic was launched in the state earlier this year is a clear indication that promises made by the Tinubu administration to entrepreneurs are not mere rhetoric.

“Today, as we commission this dual-purpose MSME Clinic, we bear witness to two critical truths. First, it proves that our promises to entrepreneurs are not mere rhetoric.

“Secondly, it affirms that the most durable interventions we can achieve as a government are born from strong intergovernmental partnerships. We are delighted to witness the fruition of these projects, and I am honoured to be part of this milestone,” Shettima said.

Senator Shettima explained that the Benue Fashion & ICT Hub and other hubs as well as shared facilities established across Nigeria are the federal government’s intervention targeted at fostering a conducive business and regulatory environment for MSMEs in the country to thrive and prosper.

The Benue MSME Hub, according to him, is one of the largest ever commissioned by the federal government.

He said: “With over 200 pieces of cutting-edge equipment to support fashion manufacturing and more than 100 ICT devices in the cluster, this hub has the capacity to ramp up production, provide ICT training, and achieve economies of scale.

“It is equipped to produce a wide range of fashion items, including military uniforms, school uniforms, and corporate wear, both for Benue State and beyond.

“Beyond providing this cluster, the hub will also house a one-stop shop where MSMEs can engage directly with federal government agencies to resolve their regulatory issues”, he said.

The one-stop shop, he further explained, will ensure that businesses requiring support or services from agencies such as NAFDAC, BOA, CAC, ITF, SON, NEPC, SMEDAN, and others can be attended to under one roof.

VP Shettima expressed the federal government’s readiness to partner with state governments and its resolve to continue to create opportunities that meet the country’s demands, saying interventions such as the MSMEs Clinic fashion and ICT hubs represent.

Noting that MSMEs are the lifeline of communities across the nation, he said they are the bedrock of stability at a critical phase of the nation’s economic transition in times like this, even as he said it would be “impossible to grow the Nigerian economy if the growth and success of MSMEs do not remain a top priority”.

The Vice President acknowledged the numerous challenges preventing the growth and prosperity of MSMEs in Nigeria, pointing out that the Tinubu administration was already providing interventions to address them.

He however said: “With a strong resolve to tackle these challenges, the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration has provided interventions like the Benue Fashion Hub and other hubs established across the nation.

“These hubs support MSME clusters across various industries, including fashion and textiles, leather, ICT, agriculture, and cold room facilities. We look forward to establishing additional clusters for mechanic cities, printing, barber shops, shoemaking, and wellness later this year”.

The VP commended what he described as the visionary leadership of Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Iormem Alia, and his dedicated team who, according to him, have worked tirelessly with the team from the Presidency, led by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Job Creation and MSMEs Temitola Adekunle-Johnson, and other partners, to ensure swift delivery of the MSME facility hub in the country for fashion and ICT.

In his remarks, the state governor, Rev. Fr Alia, thanked the federal government and Vice President Shettima for fulfilling the promise to establish a fashion and MSMEs hub in the state.

He said: “The project represents more than just an infrastructure; it is an embodiment of our collective vision for a prosperous, creative and empowered Benue State,”

While appreciating VP Shettima, the Governor said he was deeply honoured to welcome the VP to Bene State for the second time in less than a year, noting that his commitment to the growth of the country is evident in the VP’s support for initiatives that uplift communities and empower the citizens.

He continued: “Your visit to Benue State, for the second time in less than six months, is a testament to the partnership between Benue State and the federal government, and we deeply appreciate it.

“The Benue State fashion hub, which is your initiative and a gift to the state, is a corner stone of our administration’s agenda to promote creativity, foster innovation, create employment and provide opportunity for our people,”

Noting that the role played by the office of the Vice President and the support of President Tinubu in the realization of all the government of Benue has envisioned cannot be overemphasized, Governor Alia said Vice President Shettima’s love for Benue State and its people is quite overwhelming.

On his part, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Joseph Utsev expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for their love for Nigerians and for fulfilling their campaign promises, which they said will make life meaningful for Nigerians, adding that this is shown in the project which is being commissioned in Benue State.

He said the Vice President was in Benue in November last year during the launch of the MSMEs Clinics and made a promise that the federal government will support Benue State for a fashion hub and that today, the fashion is commissioned.

Earlier, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mrs. Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite, thanked the Vice President for his contributions to the development of the MSMEs in the country, saying the event underscores the commitment of the VP and his team to the industrialization of the communities in Nigeria.

“The various initiatives that your Office is anchoring have contributed positively to Nigeria’s socio-economic environment, to the development of the various sectors which is seen in the commissioning of fashion hubs today,” she stated.

Also in his remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on MSMEs, Adekunle-Johnson, said it was last January that the idea for a fashion hub was envisioned when the Vice President launched the MSME Clinic in Benue State.

He said under the Tinubu administration, five projects have so far been commissioned, while eight are ongoing and will be commissioned before the end of 2024.

He stressed that the Benue Fashion and ICT Hub is the biggest and has capacity to expand depending on what the state wants to add to it.

“This is a very important retreat to remind senior civil servants, new appointees and heads of agencies about the civil service regulations.

“These regulations can be quite tedious, and the Permanent Secretary, State House, was right when he said some of these issues will come back to his table.

“I remember when I was in the Senate Public Accounts Committee, I have seen some faces here that we summoned to come and answer questions that arose from the Auditor-General’s report.

“This underscores the importance of reminding ourselves of the procedural issues that have to be complied with in governance and administration,” he said.

In an overview of the retreat, a permanent secretary, Olufunsho Adebiyi, explained that it was designed to foster collaboration and create synergy in the operations of the State House and agencies under its supervision.

“In order for us to drive the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it has become necessary for us to synergise within the State House and all the agencies under its control.

“The retreat is structured to define who is responsible for what; how we can help each other achieve our mandates; and some of us are meeting each other for the first time.

“It is necessary to define our roles and limits and avoid breaking financial, procurement, administrative thresholds,” he said.

The permanent secretary also highlighted that with the recent approval of the new minimum wage by the President, the government will no longer tolerate massive recruitments into agencies without approval or waiver, as well as selective promotions.

“We now have new public service rules that define when to promote, who is due for promotion, mode of promotion, procedure and conduct of promotion examinations and strict adherence to public service rules,” he said.

Adebiyi said the retreat, the first of its kind under the Tinubu administration, also deliberated on the need for strict enforcement of government policies and sanctions for defaulting agencies.

“The retreat apprised CEOs of government agencies on types of appointments into the public service, criteria and qualifications for these appointments, procedures for procurement process, budget preparation, and the monitoring and evaluation of government policies,” he added.

The agencies whose establishing acts place them  under the supervision of the State House include the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Bureau for Public Procurement (BPP), Nigeria Agriculture and Land Development Agency (NALDA), Office of the Chief Economic Adviser to the President (OCEAP), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Why Nigerians should rally round Tinubu, by Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged fellow Nigerians to unite behind President Bola Tinubu as he addresses the country’s sociopolitical, economic, and security challenges.

Shettima spoke yesterday in Abuja at the launch of a book, titled: “Navigating the Politics of Universal Education Policies in Nigeria; written by former Ekiti State deputy governor, Prof. Modupe Adelabu.

The Vice President assured the nation that the benefits of the tough measures being implemented would become evident soon.

He counseled that the focus should not be on lamenting the nation’s past or present difficulties but on finding solutions to the core challenges.

Shettima stressed the need for national support for the current administration, considering the years of decline that preceded President Tinubu’s administration.

The Vice President stressed that to enable the President deliver on his promises, he needs the cooperation of all Nigerians as he steers the ship of state to a safe harbor.

He said: “In President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we have a leader that we can invest our trust in. I’m not playing politics; I’m speaking from the heart. I have seen the soul of Bola Tinubu, and he has a good soul.

“He means well for the nation. He wants to live in a place of glory. He is not in power to engage in primitive capital accumulation; no. He is in power to leave landmarks in the sands of time. He is the most demonised politician in Nigeria.

“The first time I went to his house at Bourdillon, I was looking forward to seeing a mansion comparable to Buckingham Palace – with gardens, swimming pools, with leaves – but it was an anticlimax.

“When I went to the house on the Bourdillon, where the Lord of the Bourdillon holds court, I saw a derelict colonial structure struggling to wear the looks of modernity. There was nothing special about that house. My house in Maiduguri is better than the house in Bourdillon.

“At the formative stage of the All Progressives Congress (APC), we held a meeting in his house. They served us a variety of meals, but he opted to take gari with groundnut for lunch.

“Is this the monster that they were making him out to be? No. Since I have known him, he has been using only one wristwatch and, in fact, I dress better than him. He doesn’t even care. He has overcome all those odds to dress well.

“So, we need to rally around this poor man. He has taken some bold steps. The economy that we met was in a huge mess.

“But it wasn’t for us. We were part of the (Muhammadu) Buhari administration; we cannot deny that. We belong to the (same) political family. It’s not about apportioning blame, but it’s about finding solutions to our nation’s needs. We knew there are challenges.

“Forget about the politics being played by the Atiku Abubakar, the Obidient crowds. They all said they were going to withdraw the fuel subsidy.

“The President had the courage, the political courage, and the willpower to take far-reaching decisions, and it always comes at a price.

“When a woman is about to give birth, it’s a very painful process. But after the child has come forth, it’s a cause for celebration. I believe that posterity will be very kind to this poor man.

“He has taken far-reaching decisions. On the economy, we have crossed the river. The economy is now on a path to sustain growth. We are now exporting about 1.7 million barrels of oil per day; the naira is stabilising against the dollar.

“On the food security crisis that is confronting us, we cannot divorce ourselves from the realities in the global space. It’s not a localised phenomenon, but ours was further compounded by the security challenges in the traditional food basket of the country, the Northcentral, and the Northwest. But the security issues will be addressed.

“Rest assured that in the coming months, Nigerians will see a sea of change in their fortunes. I want to ask all of us to rally around this poor man.”

Prof. Adelabu explained that her 197-page, nine-chapter book was inspired by the inseparable link between education and politics.

She emphasised the need to use political power to galvanise quality, accessible education for all.

“The President had the courage, the political courage, and the willpower to take far-reaching decisions, and it always comes at a price.

“When a woman is about to give birth, it’s a very painful process but after the child has come forth, it’s a cause for celebration. I believe that posterity will be very kind to this poor man.

“He has taken far-reaching decisions, and the economy, we have crossed the river. The economy is now on a path to sustain growth.

“We are now exporting about 1.7 million barrels of oil per day, the Naira is stabilizing against the dollar and the food security crisis that is confronting us, we cannot divorce ourselves from the realities in the global space.

“It’s not a localized phenomenon but ours was further compounded by the security challenges in the traditional food basket of the country, the North Central, and the North West but the security issues will be addressed.

“And be rest assured that in the coming months, Nigerians will see a sea of change in their fortunes.

“I want to ask all of us to rally around this poor man.”

Expressing concern over the years of neglect in basic education across northern Nigeria, Vice President Shettima highlighted the troubling involvement of underage children in the recent nationwide governance protests.

He attributed this situation to the breakdown of family values and a dysfunctional family system, where parents increasingly struggle to control their children.

In light of these challenges, the Vice President supported the views of Sen. Olubunmi Ajetunmbi, a discussant at the event, who proposed that Development Commissions, particularly the North East Development Commission and the newly approved North West Development Commission, should be mandated by state instruments to tackle the issues plaguing basic education, particularly the out-of-school children crisis in the region.

The VP agreed that the Commissions should be given a clear timeline to reduce and ultimately curb this growing problem.

While noting that the financial autonomy granted to local councils offers new hope for improving basic education, he, however, clarified that governors are not the villains they are often portrayed to be concerning local council funds.

He urged stakeholders in the education sector and local council administrations to collaborate with governors to effectively address the challenges in the education system.

He emphasised that this financial autonomy should be leveraged to protect and advance the interests of people at the grassroots level as it also presents new opportunities for improving basic education.

Discussing the book, Sen. Olubunmi Adetunmbi highlighted the alarming figure of 17.8 million out-of-school children in Nigeria, with 13.1 million of them in the northern region.

He stressed that this issue is not only a threat to national security but also a looming human resources and economic disaster if left unaddressed.

Adetunmbi argued that this predictable challenge can be proactively managed through strategic measures, including legislation, a national dialogue on basic education, decentralization, and the domestication of education policies to meet the specific needs of each region.

Former Minister Bolaji Abdullahi noted that the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) law needs to be reviewed to expand its scope beyond merely providing funds for infrastructure, suggesting it should also focus on enhancing the quality of education.

On her part, Erelu Bisi Fayemi added that education policies should no longer be gender-blind, advocating for measures to ensure that girls have access to quality and affordable education by providing them with the necessary resources and removing barriers to their educational advancement.

The book’s author, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, explained that her 197-page, nine-chapter book was inspired by the inseparable link between education and politics.

She emphasised the need to use political power to galvanize quality, accessible education for all.
