Vice President Kashim Shettima gave the assurance on Wednesday in Birnin Kebbi while conveying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s sympathy to families of the kidnapped schoolgirls and relatives of the late Brigadier-General Musa Uba and the slain vice principal of the Government Girls’ Secondary School, Maga.

“There is no better time to invest in Nigeria than now. You have come at the right time when we have been blessed with committed leadership,” he said.

“Be rest assured that you have invested your trust in the right nation. Nigeria is ready for business. We have crossed the Rubicon and are now on the path of sustainable development,” he told the delegation.

Also, the Vice President of China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), Mr QIANG Wenyu, said the visit was in furtherance of an earlier meeting with President Tinubu in September 2024 in Beijing.

Wenyu reiterated the company’s commitment to collaborating with Nigerian partners in key sectors of the nation’s economy.

He said the company was prepared to fulfill its earlier pledge to deepen cooperation and expand its operations in Nigeria, noting that “for the past one year, we have been acting on that.”

The Vice President maintained that his readiness to speak truth to power, regardless of whose interest is affected has made him one of the  most distinctive figures of the Fourth Republic.

“Governor Fayose has given the media enough headlines to last several election cycles, and sometimes it feels as though the cameras chase him even when he is simply minding his business.

“He is a very colourful politician, one of the best we have in the system. He is a man who acts from a place of deep conviction, a man whose passion refuses to be contained, and whose sincerity, whether one agrees with him or not. • COAS to troops: step up rescue efforts

Vice President Kashim Shettima will today lead a delegation to Kebbi State to convey the Federal Government’s solidarity and deliver a message of reassurance to the families of abducted pupils.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reiterated his directive to security agencies to move swiftly to rescue the schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls’ Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

He assured Nigerians that the children would be brought home safely.

In a statement yesterday by his spokesman Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu said he had received full briefings from military authorities regarding both the abduction and the separate loss of soldiers in Borno State.

The statement reads: “As Commander-in-Chief, I am depressed by the tragic death of our officers on active duty.

“May God comfort the families of Brigadier-General Musa Uba and other fallen heroes,” he said.

He commended Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris for his efforts to prevent the attack despite prior intelligence warning of bandit movement in the area.

The President condemned the attack, describing it as a cruel disruption of the education of innocent girls.

He urged communities in vulnerable regions to strengthen intelligence-sharing with security agencies.

“Our forces cannot succeed without the cooperation of the people. Timely information is crucial,” he said.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to securing schools nationwide.

Condemnation trailed the killing of the school’s vice principal and the abduction of 25 pupils.

Legislators, the First Lady, governors, UNICEF and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) all demanded urgent action to halt what they described as the worsening attacks on schools and security personnel.

During an operational visit to Kebbi, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, ordered troops of Operation Fasin Yamma to intensify search-and-rescue efforts.

“We must find these children. Act decisively on all intelligence. Success is not optional,” he told field commanders.

He met with local vigilantes and hunters, urging closer collaboration based on their knowledge of the terrain.

The COAS also paid condolence visits to the Danko monarch and the school principal, assuring them of the military’s “unwavering commitment” to rescuing the girls unharmed.

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu described the attack as a painful assault on the nation’s values of safety, learning and human dignity.

“This heartbreaking incident is not only an attack on innocent girls and dedicated educators, but an assault on the values schools embody,” she said in a statement.

She offered prayers for the families and reiterated that the President had already ordered security agencies to ensure the girls’ swift rescue.

The Senate, after a motion by former Senate Leader Yahaya Abdullahi, observed a minute of silence for the slain vice principal and Brig-Gen Uba.

It urged security agencies to urgently rescue the abducted students and set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative.

Lawmakers also called on the Federal Government to recruit an additional 100,000 security personnel to strengthen the fight against terrorism.

Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda described the abduction as “the worst form of criminality” and urged security agencies to intensify efforts.

“This attack on a school is an assault on our collective future,” he said.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu also condemned the killings and called for the immediate rescue of the pupils.

UNICEF said no child should risk death or abduction in pursuit of education.

“Students and schools must be protected under international laws, and those responsible must be held to account,” the statement said.

The NBA condemned the Kebbi abduction and the killing of Brig-Gen Uba, warning that Nigeria faces a “growing culture of brazen violence”.

NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), demanded a time-bound rescue mission, a full inquiry into security lapses, prosecution of terrorism financiers, and full implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative.

“This is about leadership, justice, and the soul of the nation. Delay is danger. The time to act is now,” he said.

  • FG committed to support local production, says VP Shettima

FG committed to support local production, says VP Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to deepening support for local production.

Shettima, represented by the Special Adviser, Special Duties, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar, said this at the Made in Naija Trade Exhibition organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Commerce on Tuesday.

He said Nigeria’s economic identity and global relevance will be defined by what it creates.

The Vice President said Nigeria’s future depends on the creativity, ingenuity, and enterprise of its people.

“There is nothing that advertises the pride of a nation as much as the craft, creativity and conceptions of its people,” Shettima said. “They do more than signal the capability of the people. They serve as a fertilizer of the economy. They nourish every sector and give life to dreams yet to be imagined.”

He said the gathering was more than an exhibition, it was a statement of intent.

“This is both the assurance of our readiness to make Nigerian brands appeal to the world and a promise of the government’s commitment to work with you through this journey of transformation.”

Shettima stressed that the country’s wealth does not lie in oil fields, fertile land, or mineral deposits, but in what Nigerians are able to turn those resources into.

“Our fortune is what we make of these resources, the ambition that turns potential into prosperity. It rests on the shoulders of our most valuable asset, our human capital.”

He highlighted that Nigerian brilliance has already been demonstrated in multiple sectors, from agro-processing to architecture, textiles to technology, and manufacturing to music. But he warned that creativity is not enough if Nigerians fail to support what they produce.

“It is not enough for us to produce. We must patronize what we produce. Every time we choose a product manufactured here, we are making an investment, in a Nigerian entrepreneur, an artisan, a factory worker, a young graduate building a future.”

According to him, buying Nigerian strengthens the naira, supports jobs, reduces dependence on global supply chains, and nurtures a sustainable middle class.

Yet Shettima noted that the target goes beyond self-reliance.

“Made in Nigeria must become synonymous with quality, innovation and competitiveness on the global stage. We have the resources, we have the creativity, we have the human capital. What remains is our resolve.”

The Vice President said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu considers local creators and producers as essential partners in national renewal, describing his administration as “a dreamland for those who create.”

He outlined ongoing government efforts to make Nigeria a manufacturing and innovation hub, including interventions built to remove barriers and expand market opportunities for MSMEs and local industries.

“Our administration is committed to providing the infrastructure, stable policies and essential finance needed for our local industries to scale up, meet international standards, and proudly export Nigerian excellence to the world.”

He said the government is establishing special economic zones, expanding access to financing, reforming ports, and ensuring certification systems meet global benchmarks.

“With the world’s highest quality, we want the answer to be Nigeria,” Shettima said.

He described the Made in Naija exhibition as a symbolic declaration of confidence in Nigerian talent, and a refusal to let others define the country’s global identity.

“Nigeria is not a country waiting to be defined by others. We are determined to define ourselves. If we remain steadfast, producers and consumers, government and industry, artisans and policymakers,, we will build a Nigeria where Made in Nigeria is not a sentimental choice, but a global reference.”

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, reaffirmed the National Assembly’s full support for policies that prioritise Nigerian-made goods, saying the country’s future depends on local production, value addition, and reduced dependence on imports.

Abbas praised the initiative as a timely response to Nigeria’s urgent need for industrial growth and economic self-reliance.

He commended the committee’s chairman, Hon. Ahmed Munir, for conceptualising and delivering the exhibition, describing it as a practical expression of the nation’s industrial ambition.

“Their efforts represent a timely response to the national call for industrial growth and economic self-reliance,” Abbas said.

With the theme “Reshaping the Future of Commerce,” the exhibition aligns directly with Nigeria’s development objectives, the Speaker stated.

He said the country must now shift from an import-dependent economy to one built on domestic production, value creation, and inclusive growth, especially under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which offers huge opportunities, but only for competitive economies.

“We must position Nigerian goods as competitive, dependable, and reasonably visible,” Abbas noted.

The Speaker also highlighted the significance of the Nigeria First Policy, launched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and endorsed by the National Assembly.

The policy mandates government ministries, agencies, and institutions to give priority to locally manufactured goods in all public procurement processes.

“Its goal is clear: to boost domestic industrial output, reduce over-reliance on imports, and create sustainable employment,” he said.

Abbas stressed that full compliance is expected, noting that the exhibition itself is evidence of the policy being put into practice.

Recalling his recent visit to China, the Speaker said Nigeria must learn from countries that built global competitiveness through sustained local manufacturing.

“Nigeria must follow a similar path. We need to process our raw materials, add value domestically, and confidently promote Nigeria-made goods in regional and global markets,” he said.

Weakening reliance on imports, he noted, is not only an economic choice but a national obligation.

“Strengthening local production is not just a tactic for survival. It is a duty we owe to the present and future generations,” Abbas declared.

He reaffirmed that the National Assembly has already passed and amended several pieces of legislation targeting industrial growth, ease of doing business, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Still, he cautioned that increased output must not come at the expense of quality.

“Nigerian manufacturers must ensure their products meet global standards. Quality assures credibility, and consumer trust,” he said.

Abbas also urged Nigerians to embrace their civic role in economic development.

“Each time we choose locally made goods, we strengthen our economy and reinforce our identity,” he said. “These decisions are powerful expressions of economic responsibility and national solidarity.”

Chairman of the House Committee on Commerce, Hon. Ahmed Munir, Nigeria stands on the brink of an industrial and economic rebirth driven by local manufacturing, innovation, and strong legislative support.

Munir said the country must now “forge prosperity with our own hands,” transforming raw potential into globally competitive products made in Nigeria.

He noted that the focus on local content is projected to create over five million new jobs by 2030, shifting Nigerian youths from the unemployment line into factories, workshops, and innovation hubs across the country.

According to him, this shift represents not just economic growth, but the “restoration of the dignity of labour.”

Munir emphasized that substituting key imports with locally made alternatives remains central to stabilizing Nigeria’s foreign reserves.

He stated that by reducing dependency on foreign goods, the country could save up to $20 billion annually in foreign exchange, a move that aligns with the strategic priorities of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The lawmaker described the non-oil sector’s expansion as “no longer aspirational, but a policy pillar,” noting that products made in Nigeria are expected to contribute an additional 5 percent to the country’s GDP within five years.

“Our vision extends beyond our borders,” he said. “Nigerian products must be ready to compete not just in Lagos, Port Harcourt, or Abuja, but in London, Beijing, and New York.”

Munir also highlighted ongoing legislative efforts under the 10th National Assembly, led by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, including work on the domestication of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, which opens access to a $3.4 trillion market.

Other priority areas include establishing a national Weights and Measures Centre and strengthening regulatory frameworks that support industrial competitiveness.

He affirmed that the House remains committed to building a strong economic base “brick by Nigerian-made brick,” with the backing of policies designed to sustain growth, attract investment, and ensure long-term national prosperity.

APC’s broadening coalition reflects Tinubu’s commitment to inclusivity, unity – Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has said that the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s broadening coalition reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to inclusivity, competence and national unity.

Shettima made this known in Lokoja, when he formally received former governor of Kogi, Alhaji Idris Wada and other prominent politicians into the APC.

He said the decision of the “elder statesman and partner in building a stronger Nigeria,” to join the party was driven by national interest rather than personal interest.

“This is not a victory of one ego over another. What we are witnessing is an alignment with a broader national vision and a platform of stability,” he said.

The vice president described the APC as a political home where progressives converge to build a renewed nation.

Shettima, therefore, urged new entrants to see the party as a platform for service and development, particularly in Kogi State, where he pledged sustained peace and accelerated growth.

” We shall deepen peace in Kogi. We shall expand development in Kogi State. We shall uphold the promise of a renewed Nigeria.

” Because you have shown that when leaders choose peace, the people reap progress. The APC does not take your trust for granted,” the Vice-President said.

He also described the defection of former Kogi  governor,  Idris Wada, and other notable political figures into the APC as a confluence of progressives and a triumph of reason.

He hailed Tinubu for his deliberate and committed effort to build an inclusive and trustworthy political platform capable of attracting credible leaders from across Nigeria’s political landscape.

Shettima drew a symbolic connection between the city where the Niger and Benue Rivers meet and what he said was a merging of convictions for national renewal.

According to him, the movement reflects a growing shift toward political stability, unity and national alignment under the leadership of President Tinubu.

He commended Gov. Usman Ododo of Kogi for providing a calm strength, continuity and people-driven governance.

The Vice-President also commended the former Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi for ensuring a dignified and exemplary democratic transition.

“The joy of every democracy is the genuine cooperation between a predecessor and a successor. It is a relationship that must be built on patience and trust.

‘ Kogi has shown that this is possible even when it is most difficult,” Shettima said.

He stated that the cooperation between the two leaders in the confluence state stands as “a reassuring national example of political maturity.”

Earlier, governor Ododo, described the new members as men of value, character and integrity, who have joined the progressives family to serve the people.

He thanked President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima for their support at all times, pointing out that within two years of his administration, the President has visited the state three times.

“Sir, I believe that you will not be tired of our invitation. We are welcoming you, and we are behind you and to let you know that what is happening today, with the coming of our leader, His Excellency Capt. Idris Wada and others.

“Today, we are here not only to receive and welcome the decampees to the progressives family but to, once again, express our gratitude and appreciation to Mr. President for his leadership,  commitment to the unity, peace and prosperity of our dear nation, particularly, Kogi State.

“We are here again to appreciate our leaders and every other critical stakeholder of our dear state, who laid the foundation for us to continue with their good job.

‘ We are here again to appreciate all our progressives who support good governance and have resolved to join us today to ensure that we move Kogi State forward.”

Also, the National Chairman of APC, Prof. Nantawe Yilwatda, said the National Working Committee of APC was in confluence state to rescue the state from the sinking People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“We are here to give a platform and to give a life jacket inside the ocean for people who are stranded inside the ocean in that ship called PDP.

‘Your Excellency, I’m pleased to present to you the former Governor of Kogi , His Excellency, retired Capt. Idris Wada, who is moving from the sinking ship to become a progressive.

“I also have Chief Sam Ranti Abenemi,  Imam Alfa, Idowu Ibekunle and the rest who have joined the progressive family today. I welcome you to the family of progressives.

”You have taken the wise choice in your political life,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors , Wada, said his decision to joined the APC was motivated by President Tinubu’s performance in areas of infrastructure development, economic reforms and social investment.

“The reasons for crossing over are numerous but there is no time for me to explain them to you.  APC is a progressives party and is leading Nigeria in the right direction. Mr President made a very bold decision in removing fuel subsidy.

“Initially, we all felt all kinds of pains but now, fuel price is dropping almost every month,  the exchange rate, which the President unified, has stabilised our currency.

‘ The naira is appreciating on a regular basis in the foreign exchange market, ” Wada said.

Other dignitaries who attended the grand reception include the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu; former Minister of State for FCT, Dr Ramatu Aliyu; Senator Smart Adeyemi;  Deputy Speaker of the House of Representative, Benjamin Kalu; Alhaji Ali Dalori  among others.

FG raises red flag as sanitation failures cost Nigeria N455bn annually

‎The federal government on Monday raised an alarm over the massive economic losses linked to poor sanitation, warning that Nigeria loses an estimated N455 billion annually due to open defecation, water contamination and sanitation-related diseases.

‎Vice President Kashim Shettima, who declared open the maiden National Sanitation Conference in Abuja, said the country can no longer afford complacency as sanitation failures continue to threaten public health, undermine productivity and damage Nigeria’s global reputation.

‎“Sanitation is not just infrastructure — it is dignity, productivity, and the future of our children. The human and economic costs are staggering. The time for half measures is over,” Shettima said.

‎Delivering a keynote address at the conference themed “Accelerating Sanitation for All, Shettima said that despite federal efforts, millions of Nigerians still lack access to safely managed sanitation facilities, while open defecation remains widespread.

‎He cited repeated outbreaks of cholera, diarrhoea and other preventable diseases as indicators of a system in urgent need of overhaul.

‎The Vice President highlighted progress under government programmes such as PEWASH, SURWASH, the National Action Plan for WASH, as well as SchoolWASH and HealthWASH.

‎The Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet Campaign, he noted, has helped deliver 158 Open Defecation Free (ODF) LGAs and statewide ODF status in Jigawa and recently Katsina.

‎He commended Katsina for its milestone, urging other states to “join the race” toward a nationwide ODF status.

‎Shettima also pointed to the enormous economic potential of the sanitation sector, valued at $14.23 billion by 2030, covering the toilet economy, circular sanitation, smart sanitation technologies and menstrual hygiene markets. He said only a fraction of this potential is being tapped.

‎He called for innovation, stronger private sector participation, and an enabling environment that supports sustainable sanitation businesses, especially in rural and peri-urban communities.

‎Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to achieving SDG 6.2 by 2030, Shettima said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s creation of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation signals the administration’s determination to make WASH a national priority.

‎“To accelerate sanitation for all, we must act together and act faster, calling on states, local governments, the private sector, civil society and communities to uphold their roles in ensuring a clean and healthy nation,” he said.

‎Earlier, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, described the conference as a historic moment for Nigeria’s sanitation agenda.

He said the two-day event brings together policymakers, development partners, researchers and industry players to review progress on the Clean Nigeria campaign and strengthen the push toward universal sanitation coverage.

‎Utsev noted that sanitation is a “cornerstone of national prosperity” and urged participants to use the platform to forge partnerships, share best practices and produce concrete recommendations for implementation.

‎He praised President Tinubu for his support of the WASH sector and commended Vice President Shettima’s leadership as chair of the Clean Nigeria Campaign Steering Committee.

‎The maiden National Sanitation Conference continues in Abuja, with outcomes expected to guide upcoming federal and state sanitation interventions.
