  • Will Shina Peller stage a comeback in 2027?

Will Shina Peller stage a comeback in 2027?

    By Muiz Olasubomi

As Nigeria gears up for the pivotal 2027 general elections, the political landscape is vibrant with aspirations and ambitions. One figure who has emerged as both a hopeful candidate and a beacon of leadership is Hon. Shina Peller.

Hon. Shina Peller is not just a politician; he is a successful businessman turned politician who served in the ninth Nigerian House of Representatives from 2019 to 2023, representing the Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency,

Peller, who is the Ayedero of Yorubaland, is widely known for his unwavering advocacy for youth representation in government. This has led to his honorary recognition as the Grand Commander of the Nigerian Youth (GCNY) and Life Patron of the Nigerian Youth by the National Youth Council of Nigeria(NYCN).

Another thing Peller is known for is his constant call for the need to creat a new functional system in Nigeria that will make the existing one obsolete. He always argue that the current system is faulty.

Also, Peller always speaks against political godfatherism which has become a norm in Nigerian politics.

Peller’s outspoken nature sometimes put him at odds with influential figures within his former party. His candid criticism of the party, which he described as anti-people, stirred controversies. While some influential people within the party considered his criticism absurd, many, particularly the masses, commended his bravery, courage and honesty.

As a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Peller successfully sponsored/moved some important bills/motion which include but not limited to:

    – The need to tackle scourge of rape and other sexual offenses against female child and women. This prompted the federal government of Nigeria to establish the country’s first ever Sexual Offense Register as contained in Peller’s prayers.

    – His bill on the need to strengthen National Orientation Agency for optimal performance was also noteworthy.

    – The last motion he moved as a member of the House of Representatives was the need to strengthen Nigeria’s Creative Industry. This subsequently led to the present government creating Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy.

In the spirit of honouring a campaign promise, Peller opted not to run for a second term in the House of Representatives in order to give room to the rotational agreement between the local governments within his constituency. Instead, he aimed for the Oyo North Senatorial District seat, a decision that saw him face an electoral defeat amid allegations of irregularities.

However, this setback did not deter his political ambitions. Now, as a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peller has publicly declared his intention to run for Senate again in 2027.

One of the key factors influencing Peller’s potential for a comeback is his undeniable street credibility. His popularity and acceptance extend beyond mere political rhetoric; they are rooted in genuine connections with the people.

Also, his strong relationship with Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, further solidifies his stance as a formidable candidate for the forthcoming election.

Shina Peller has never hidden his admiration for Governor Seyi Makinde’s leadership style. It is evident that his loyalty to the governor is not in doubt, as he has consistently maintained at different public gatherings that Makinde is a visionary leader and most performing governor in the history of Oyo State.

Due to his close relationship with the governor, some believe that he may be Governor Makinde’s preferred PDP candidate for the next Oyo State gubernatorial election.

Peller’s ability to engage with constituents on a personal level enables him to genuinely understand their concerns and needs. This rapport transcends traditional political boundaries, making it easier for voters to relate to him.

Another noteworthy aspect of his leadership style is his unwavering dedication to youth empowerment. Through the Lead Generation Initiative (LGI), Peller has trained thousands of Nigerian Youth across the country on leadership, governance, political organizing and mobilization, active citizenship, strategic communication and others.

LGI exists primarily to create and nurture a new generation of leaders that Nigeria and the world will be proud of. By equipping the next generation with the necessary skills, LGI is not only addressing immediate challenges but also laying the groundwork for sustainable development.

As Nigeria navigates complex socio-economic challenges, many citizens are searching for leaders who empathize with their struggles and can translate that empathy into action.

Peller’s unique attributes qualify him to be classified as one of those leaders that masses yearn for. If given the chance, he could very well usher in a new era of leadership where progress, inclusivity and empowerment reigns. But will he be able to stage a triumphant comeback in 2027? Time, the electorate, and most importantly, God will tell.

“This day symbolizes a turning point in Nigeria’s history, when the voices of the people rang loud and clear during the 1993 presidential election. Despite subsequent struggles, that moment remains a testament to our resilience and affirmation that democracy is worth fighting for.

“As we honor the late M.K.O Abiola and those who stood up for truth and fairness, let’s reinforce our commitment to uphold the values they fought for. Today, we must actively participate in the political process, engage in constructive dialogue, advocate for our rights, and exercise our franchise. Every action counts, whether through voting, community organizing, or grassroots activism.

The future of Nigeria is bright, but it depends on our unwavering commitment to democratic principles.

“So, today, let’s remember our past, engage in our present, and envision our future. May this Democracy Day inspire us all to work tirelessly towards a Nigeria where democracy is not merely a political system but a way of life. Why I organised widows empowerment programme in memory of JFO – Shina Peller

The Ayedero of Yorubaland, Hon. Shina Peller, has said that his decision to hold a cash empowerment programme for about 200 widows in memory of the late Hon. Jacob Funmi Ogunsola (JFO) was informed by his desire to keep JFO’s legacy alive.

Peller explained that the programme was held not only as a tribute to JFO but also as a testament to the values he championed throughout his life, stressing that the heartfelt initiative marks two years since the passing of JFO.

In a statement on his social media platforms, Peller stated that the programme encapsulates a commitment to continue the mission JFO devoted himself to, which is supporting those in need, particularly widows who often face daunting financial hardships.

He explained that JFO was revered as a beacon of hope, providing consistent assistance and bringing smiles to the faces of many struggling families.

Until his untimely death, JFO organised annual cash empowerment specifically to alleviate the burdens of widows in his community.

Witnessing the joy and gratitude from recipients during these distributions had a lasting impact on Hon. Peller, who participated in the last empowerment initiative alongside JFO.

Explaining the rationale behind his action, Peller said: “In the wake of JFO’s death, the collective grief was palpable. Among those who mourned, the widows felt a profound loss, believing their hopes for continued support vanished with him. He noted further that the venue for this year’s empowerment programme, First Baptist Church in Ago-Are, was chosen deliberately., adding that it served not only as a gathering place for the event but also as a space to pray for JFO and his grieving family.

During the gathering, he made a solemn promise to uphold JFO’s empowering legacy, committing that such initiatives would persist annually, independent of any political office he may or may not hold in the future.

Peller reminded all that life’s true measure lies in everyone’s actions and intentions. He stressed that individual’s contributions to society should echo with the values of kindness and empathy, especially during challenging times.

According to him: “Paying tribute to a true champion of the people. My friend Late. Hon. Jacob Funmi Ogunmola (JFO) may be gone, but his impact lives on. I organized a special church service at First Baptist Church, Ago-Are, where he worshiped, to pray for his soul and the family he left behind.

“In the wake of JFO’s death, the collective grief was palpable. Among those who mourned, the widows felt a profound loss, believing their hopes for continued support vanished with him. This realization motivated me to ensure that JFO’s mission would not fade away.

“To that effect , I held a cash empowerment program for 200 widows across 4 LGAs in OkeOgun, Oyo State, a continuation of his remarkable work. I’m committed to sustaining this program annually in his honor. May we all be inspired to do good and remember the departed.”

  • Ondo Gov outcome wouldn’t have affected GEF-Peller

Ondo Gov outcome wouldn’t have affected GEF-Peller

The outcome of the recent gubernatorial election in Ondo State won’t affect the forthcoming Global Entrepreneurship Festival (GEF) holding in the state, Hon Shina Peller has assured.

He was reacting to insinuations in some quarters that if Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had lost, it

    would have affected the event.

Peller emphasised, GEF is a global event that transcends regional politics, focusing on empowering entrepreneurs and fostering innovation.

He said  only an enemy of youth and development won’t support the event scheduled for November 22-24, 2024, which promises to unite innovative minds from across the globe with over 5,000 participants and 15,000 attendees expected.

GEF is an international event which focuses on empowering entrepreneurs and creating opportunities for innovation.

It is expected to attract entrepreneurs and investors from around the world with networking opportunities for participants to engage with influential business leaders and establish valuable connections.

Moreover, the E-Village in Akure where the event is holding is a hub for creativity and collaboration, drawing local and international investors.

GEF’s alignment with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly addressing poverty eradication through innovation, underscores its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.

In an interview with journalists, Peller emphasized that GEF is an international event independent of local political dynamics. “It’s crucial to clarify that GEF is a global event, untethered by local political shifts,” he stated.

Peller reassured that governance structure do not dictate the success of the GEF. He noted that the essence of the festival transcends regional politics, focusing instead on empowering entrepreneurs and creating opportunities for innovation.

While the GEF is an annual, global event holding simultaneously in different countries around the world, the benefits derived from this year will be tangible for the people of Ondo State.

According to Peller, the state is ideally positioned to become a gateway for entrepreneurial activities due to its proximity to the world’s first E-Village.

The venue is designed to be a vibrant hub for creativity and collaboration, drawing in both local and international investors due to the fact that the location where E-Village in Ondo state is situated, is less than 30 minutes’ drive to both the airport and waterway.

He added that the festival represents a unique opportunity for Ondo residents and Nigerians at large to engage with influential business leaders, gain insights, and potentially establish valuable connections.

At the 4th International Furniture, Home Textile and Household Exhibition tagged Nigeria DecorExpo 2024, Hon Shina Peller and other key stakeholders, have shared pivotal insights on how the Federal Government can nurture the growth of Nigeria’s furniture industry.

This event attracted key stakeholders from the furniture and textile sectors, each contributing to a larger conversation about innovation, policy, and collaboration in these vital industries.

Speaking on the first day of the three-day event holding at Landmark Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, Peller emphasised that effective policy-making plays a crucial role in driving growth in the furniture and textile sectors.

“Policies must be crafted to support local manufacturers, attract investments, and ensure fair competition,” he stated.

His remarks reflect a growing consensus among industry leaders that the government needs to create an environment conducive to business.

Peller praised the previous administration’s decision to restrict the importation of furniture and textile products as a positive move towards fostering local production.

He added the policy not only protect local manufacturers but also encouraged new entrants into the market, which he said is essential for stimulating economic growth.

Dr. Daniel Deji Ayodele, co-host of the event and founder of the Mindshift Empowerment and Employment Initiative (MEEI Programme), echoed Peller’s sentiments by urging business owners to focus on sustainability and community empowerment. He highlighted Nigeria’s vast potential, pointing out that the country is brimming with talent and resilience.

“I’ve always believed in the power of global partnerships,” Ayodele noted, adding that by merging Nigerian innovation with Turkish craftsmanship, stakeholders can create unique products that resonate locally and internationally.

Ayodele’s called for businesses to build bridges rather than just brands is pivotal for creating a thriving furniture industry that benefits all parties involved.

Also, the conversation around collaboration was further enriched by Martins Arebun, President of the MEEI Program. He pointed out the necessity for enhanced collaboration between Türkiye and Africa. As the exhibition serves as a platform for bilateral trade relationships, Arebun stressed the importance of innovation and cooperation in the furniture and textile sectors.

“Let’s make this event not just an exhibition, but a movement that transforms the furniture industry,” he asserted. This focus on partnership could lead to more comprehensive market strategies and improved supply chains, ultimately benefiting the economies of both nations.

The furniture and textile industries represent significant portions of Nigeria’s economy, contributing substantially to GDP and providing countless jobs. By harnessing their potential, stakeholders have the opportunity to enhance exports and broaden their market reach.

Also speaking at the event, Gabriel Idahosa, President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, emphasized that investing in these sectors will yield long-term benefits for the nation’s economy.

This three-day event not only showcases the latest innovations but also underscores the economic significance of these industries and the collaborative efforts needed to propel them forward.

Also speaking, the Decor Expo Exhibition Director, Mohammed Ali Aras, noted that the insights shared during Nigeria DecorExpo 2024 serve as a blueprint for transformative action within the furniture industry.

As the event continues today and tomorrow, and as stakeholders continue to collaborate and innovate, the vision of a robust and sustainable furniture industry in Nigeria inches closer to reality.
