  • I had to act like madman to win fans’ empathy, says Shina Peters

I had to act like madman to win fans’ empathy, says Shina Peters

Legendary Afro-Juju musician, Sir Shina Peters, has revealed the unusual strategy used to rebuild his public image after he left Prince Adekunle’s band.

According to the ‘Ace’ star, the unusual strategy involved being styled like a madman and paraded in public to change the public narrative.

The veteran musician made the shocking revelation during his appearance on ‘The Honest Bunch podcast,’ where he opened up on the backlash he faced after parting ways with his former band.

“When I left Prince Adekunle’s band, people protested against me, saying that I left my father because of money,” Sir Shina Peters recounted. “Then, the owner of my record label, Tunde Savage, who was the marketing director of Daily Times, alongside the weekend editor of Concord Newspapers and Evening Times editor, all came up with an idea.”

According to the ‘Ace’ crooner, his record label boss designed a publicity stunt that would evoke sympathy and reshape public perception about him.

“The owner of the label called me one day and said I would plate my hair and not loosen it for three days. He also asked me to tear some of my old clothes, which I did,” he narrated. “On the third day, they loosened the hair but didn’t comb it. Then I wore the torn clothes, and they took me to Oyingbo Market to buy ewedu. As I was buying it, they captured everything on camera, but I didn’t know what they were up to.”

The dramatization didn’t end there. Sir Shina Peters said they later took him to Badagry, where Julius Berger was constructing an overhead bridge, and instructed him to act like a mentally unstable person in public.

“They asked me to eat like a madman all because the first day I left Prince Adekunle, people didn’t find it easy and were mad at me. So all the gimmicks were to change the narrative and earn empathy from fans,” he explained.

Why I left my parents at 10 – Shina Peters

Veteran musician Sir Shina Peters has opened up about the difficult circumstances that led him to leave his parents at 10.

Speaking in a recent interview on The Honest Bunch podcast, the legendary Afro-Juju singer revealed that financial hardship pushed him to seek independence at a young age.

He said: “What led me to leave my parents at 10 is because they don’t have money to rent a room and a parlour. So the only room-anytime we are having holidays, I always go to Oshodi. They will spread by mat, me I will sleep on the mat. My father, my mother, they will sleep on the bed waiting for me to sleep before they can perform husband and wife right, and I will not be able to sleep.”

The singer said the experience was painful and eventually inspired his decision to fend for himself.

“I don’t discuss this. It’s painful. Painful. Seeing my father and my mother dragging. Then I said to myself, ‘Shina, no. Go outside there and find life for yourself.’ Because I’m a special spiritual boy. I fast 60, 90 days. Then I left. I just woke them up- ‘papa, mama, me I dey go.’ They said, ‘Go where? Tomorrow morning you’re supposed to go to St. Peter’s School, Abeokuta.’ I said, ‘Forget about education now, let me find my level, let me find myself. If I continue this way, how can I contribute to the success of my unborn yet? I’m not going to be the only one, so let me go and look how I will make you proud.’ Then I did it at age 10.”

He recalled the moment he left home, promising his parents he would not return as a failure.

“The owner of the house went inside around 2am and brought a schnapps, meaning this type of bad incident may not enter this house again. After a few meters, I looked back at the house and told them that I will not come back to this house if I fail, but I promise you, I will not fail. And I will not meet this house like this.”

Reflecting on how far he has come, Peters recounted returning to his family home years later after achieving success in music.

“In 1972, my second London with Prince Adekunle, they all came to the airport to call me. I asked the big industry to follow me to my parents’ house. Guess what? I left the house with 10 rooms, ‘face me I face you’ rooms-I met 2 because of that Oshodi canal; they broke the house. Each time all these things reflect, I work extra miles.

“Sometimes I call God-me and my God sometimes we fight, and I will prostrate again to apologise because I believe in Him so much. So music is not ‘sere-sere things’ that they’re doing now. If you want to be an icon in the industry, a legend, you have to go extra miles. You are a role model, what you will sing when you are young is totally different from what you are singing when you are an adult.”

I’ve more evergreen songs than Michael Jackson – Shina Peters

Veteran Juju musician Oluwashina Peters popularly known as Sir Shina Peters, has declared that producing timeless music is the ultimate measure of a musician’s legacy.

Speaking on a recent episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, the 67-year-old music icon claimed to have surpassed the late American pop legend Michael Jackson in the number of evergreen songs, asserting his four classics outshine Jackson’s two, namely Of The World and Thriller.

“The only thing you can show for showbiz at the end is how many evergreens you have produced. To my credit, I have four evergreens. Even Michael Jackson has just two; Of The World and Thriller.

“So, if I have four, I am accomplished,” he expressed.

Peters, a trailblazer in the Juju music scene, expressed pride in his contributions to Nigerian music but voiced strong concerns about the industry’s current state.

He lamented that the high standards set by himself and his contemporaries have been “bastardised” by the new generation of artists, signaling a decline in quality and authenticity.

Renowned Juju musician Oluwashina Peters popularly known as Sir Shina Peters has recounted how he began his career at 10, purchased his first car at 13, became a father at 14 and built his first house by 16.

The 67-year-old revealed this during an appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast.

“I started my career at the age of 10. I had my first child at 14. I bought my first car at 13. I built my first house at 16,” he said.

Despite his storied career, Peters expressed reluctance to return to active music production.

He referenced an unconducive creative environment and a lack of inspiration as barriers to new work, stating that the current music landscape does not align with his artistic style.

The musician noted that 65 percent of his fanbase now consists of Igbo listeners, rather than his native Yoruba community, with many urging him to release new music.

However, he remains hesitant, unsure of what themes to explore in today’s industry.

He said: “65 per cent of my fans are Igbos, not Yorubas. My fans are demanding that I give them new music but I don’t just go to the studio. I can’t go to the studio, the atmosphere is not conducive for me. I don’t know what to sing.”

Born in 1958 in Lagos, Nigeria, Sir Shina Peters is celebrated for pioneering Afrojuju, a fusion of traditional Juju with Afrobeat and funk.

His 1980s and 1990s hits, including albums like Ace and Shina Peters Live, cemented his legacy as a cornerstone of Nigerian music history.
