  • Shina Peters, K 1 disagree over music bands

Juju legend, Sir Shina Peters and his Fuji counterpart, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, better known as K1 De Ultimate, have disagreed over the feasibility of modern pop musicians running a band as part of their work.

The music titans were part of the ‘Ariya Repete’ Roundtable Discourse that included two-time Grammy Award Winner Lekan Babalola, Jaywon, King Sunny Ade’s manager, Clement Ige, Wole Sorunke and Hakeem Adenekan.

Jide Taiwo, Executive Editor of TheNETng, who moderated the discussion wanted to know if Shina Peters regretted infusing disco into juju music since younger artistes are now being blamed for not using Yoruba language in their music.

SSP defended his choice, saying his innovation was done to expand the horizon of juju music farther than his predecessors had. He then continued by advising younger artistes not to always rely on producers to create a quick beat for them, instead to learn how to own and run a band.

“You can imagine running a 28 piece band…can you imagine what that costs? And we that have bands like that have to do rehearsals every day. Meanwhile when we are invited to events such as wedding receptions, we’re expected to just plug and play like these hip-hop artistes. Let’s not even go into the type of money we’re offered compared to these young boys…”

K1 however expressed a dissenting view; “You can’t expect everybody to operate that same way. For instance, at the position I am now, I don’t have to travel with band boys like we used to do. There are drummers and instrumentalists all over the world. I only need to rehearse with them for a few days and we can do a show together. Running a band is expensive.”

The Ariya Repete Roundtable Discourse, an initiative of Nigerian Breweries beer brand, Goldberg, is a conference dedicated to sustaining the rich heritage of Yoruba music genres, Fuji and Apala as well as discovering new talents.

Auditions have started March 13 in Ado-Ekiti, Sango-Ota and across eight cities in Nigeria.

  • ‘I was never favoured because I am Shina Peters’ son’

Popular Juju music artiste, Sir Shina Peters was one of the proud parents at the 49th convocation of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), as his son, Gbemileke Olushina Peters was among the graduands.

21-year-old Peters bagged a second class upper degree with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.26 from the department of Architecture during the ceremony held at the Jelili Adebisi Omotola Hall of the university on Tuesday.

He told reporters at the event that he hoped to make his mark in both political and architectural fields, as his father had done in the music industry.

As for being the son of a renowned celebrity, Peters said he has had to work hard to achieve all he did.

“I am the best graduating Design student in my department. Four years in Architecture have been tough but I had to do as well as I could. It is endless hours of work and I knew I had to make my parents proud.

“There’s nothing peculiar about being the son of Sir Shina Peters. We all had to work extra hard to achieve all we achieved and I was never favoured because of my status in any way. In fact, nobody knew about my relationship with my father until my Year Four when I contested for the position of departmental President and won.”

Peters said he chose not to be a part of his father’s musical team for ambitious reasons, despite his dancing prowess.

“I am aspiring to enter the Senate of the Federal Republic as the youngest ever Senator by year 2027. I believe that if you cannot tackle the basic problems of the country at the grassroots, then you have basically wasted your four years of studying in the university. I don’t believe too much in education but I believe it is important for everybody to be excellent in whatever they do. My father has made his mark in the music industry, I think it is my time to do my own in another field entirely and for me, that field is architecture,” he said.

His father was all smiles as he said: “I am very happy and proud of my son. He has done well.”

Airport Hotel show: Shina Peters evokes nostalgia with music, dance

His music evoked memories of the 80s, same for his energetic dance which left many wondering how he was able to maintain such vigour over the years, but the Afro Juju creator, Shina Peters, has a ready-made answer – he can never be too old for the genre of music he originated.

He declared this at the much publicised Love Rendezvous event, hosted by Lagos Airport Hotel, to celebrate this year’s valentine season.

Ostensibly, responding to informal questions from the audience and especially, from a popular Nollywood actor who was also the MC of the night, Yomi Fash-Lanso, Shina Peters said his age can never stop him from the way he played the music several years ago.

“My age has nothing to do with the way I dance, it is in me, I can never stop doing it. I may be getting old by age but I am still young at heart. Afro Juju is what I initiated; it comprises high tempo music with rigorous dancing step and that is the way I will continue to dance it my age notwithstanding” he said.

As the veteran musician rendered some of the crowd’s favourite songs from the albums he released in his heydays, fun seekers, mostly couples, continued to ask for more.

It was indeed a night to remember as other musicians, including ‘This year’ crooner, Jaywon and popular female act, Onos, also added verve to the event.

The event also included a comedy dinner with GbengaAdeyinka which was another spectacular experience.

Speaking at the event, General Manager of the hotel, KayodeBakare, said that apart from the fact that the event was packaged by the hotel to reinforce its overall brand promise of providing its clients with hospitality with grand attention; it also stood out to promote celebration of love in a very exclusively mature and exquisite atmosphere.

“Bringing Sir Shina Peters and other notable musicians to celebrate love together in this cozy manner is another way of telling our numerous clients that we cherish their relationships,” said Bakare.
