    Sokoto: A journey in continuity

One of the greatest tragedies of government transition in Nigeria is the abandonment of projects started by predecessors. This costly behaviour by incumbents across Nigeria has left evidence of wastage across every state. Some projects, started as far back as 1999, continue to deteriorate at the expense of the people they were meant to serve.

It is therefore refreshing to see that some governors are beginning to think differently, and one of them is Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State. Unlike his predecessor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, who clearly abandoned incomplete projects left behind by former governor and now Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Governor Aliyu has taken a different path. It is a path that prioritises the completion of inherited projects while also initiating new ones that respond to present needs.

This approach is not just about governance style; it is about responsibility. It is about recognising that public funds do not belong to administrations but to the people, and that projects started in their name must be completed in their interest.

Nothing perhaps illustrates this better than the revival and completion of key water works across Sokoto State. These water projects, initiated during Senator Wamakko’s administration and abandoned during Tambuwal’s tenure, had left Sokoto grappling with an acute water crisis that peaked painfully during those years. For a state capital, it was a humiliating reality that residents depended heavily on water vendors for survival.

Under Governor Aliyu, that narrative has changed significantly. The completion and commissioning of the Tamaje Water Scheme, valued at over N14 billion, marked a turning point in urban water supply in Sokoto. Alongside this, other critical schemes such as the Old Airport Water Scheme, Gagi Water Scheme, Mana Water Scheme, Runjin Sambo Water Scheme and Rugar Liman Water Scheme have either been completed or brought back to life. Together, these facilities now deliver millions of gallons of potable water daily, drastically easing a crisis that once defined daily life in the state.

As far as Governor Ahmed and the people of Sokoto are concerned, this approach is not just infrastructure at work; it is governance restoring dignity. This is because, water is one of the most essential needs of humanity. Therefore, when clean water flows again through public taps and households, it does more than quench thirst. It restores confidence in leadership and improves public health outcomes in ways statistics often fail to capture.

Housing is another sector where Governor Aliyu’s approach to continuity and expansion stands out. Several housing estates started under Senator Wamakko were abandoned midway, leaving skeletal structures as silent monuments to policy inconsistency. Rather than discard these efforts, the current administration chose to complete them, turning abandoned sites into liveable communities.

Housing estates at Gidan Salanke and Wajake, each comprising 500 housing units, have either been completed and delivered to the people, or are at finishing stages. Beyond completing inherited projects, the government also initiated new housing schemes, including the 500-unit luxury housing estate at Sokoto New City. These developments respond directly to housing shortages and provide decent accommodation for civil servants and residents who have long struggled with limited options.

Within Sokoto metropolis itself, road infrastructure has received focused attention. Roads that once symbolised neglect and congestion have been rehabilitated or newly constructed, giving the capital a more organised and functional outlook. Projects such as the Chima-Rai Jumu’at Mosque Road to Mabera Roundabout, the Unguwar Rogo Police Station Junction to Mabera Roundabout, and the Mabera Roundabout to Musa Lukuwa Jumu’at Mosque stretch along the Eastern Bypass, have significantly improved mobility, reduced flooding and eased daily movement for residents.

Beyond these major links, numerous township roads across areas like Gawon Nama, Runjin Sambo, Low-Cost, Sahara, Remen Kura and surrounding neighbourhoods have been remodelled. The effect is unmistakable. Traffic flows better, commercial activity has picked up, and residents now experience a capital city that feels deliberately planned rather than accidentally grown.

Complementing road construction is the ongoing urban beautification programme that is steadily redefining Sokoto’s visual identity. Governor Aliyu’s administration commenced the beautification of six major roundabouts within the metropolis, with three already completed and others at varying stages of completion. Roundabouts such as Rijiya Dorawa, Ahmadu Bello Way, Sama Road, Sokoto Guest Inn, Gidan Man Ada and the Old Market Roundabout are being redesigned to improve traffic coordination while enhancing the city’s aesthetic appeal.

When stripped of sentiments, this initiative becomes much more than some cosmetic do-over. It places Sokoto on par with other state capitals across Nigeria, projecting order, pride and intentional urban planning. It is also about creating public spaces that reflect the importance of Sokoto as a historic and administrative capital.

When all these interventions are taken together: water works, housing estates, roads and urban beautification, a pattern becomes clear. Governor Ahmed Aliyu is not merely reacting to immediate political pressures; he is deliberately consolidating past investments while expanding the state’s development footprint. In a country where abandoning a predecessor’s project has almost become doctrine, this approach stands out sharply.

Sokoto today feels different because it is different. Water flows where scarcity once ruled. Roads connect where isolation once persisted. Housing stands where abandonment once mocked public hope. Roundabouts welcome visitors into a city rediscovering its pride.

Under Governor Ahmed Aliyu, Sokoto is not trapped in cycles of abandonment and restart. It is moving forward by completing what was started, correcting what was neglected and building what is necessary. That deliberate choice, more than anything else, is what defines leadership, and it is what is steadily rewriting the story of the development of Sokoto as a city and the state as a whole.

Sokoto PDP youths, students reject expulsion of Bature

Sokoto Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) youths and students stakeholders forum has rejected what it described as purported expulsion of the party’s National Organising Secretary, Hon. Umar Bature by a faction of the party saying ” the action is null, void and ineffective.”

It said the action lacked the constitutional backing , moral justification or political legitimacy emanating from an unverified factional convention that has no standing in the PDP.

The forum urged the public and PDP faithful to disregard with utmost passion what it described as lies being  circulated.

Bature with other top members of the party, including the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike were last week expelled from the party for alleged “anti party ” activities amidst factional crisis rocking  the opposition party.

Addressing journalists at a press conference in Sokoto , Chairman of the forum, Comrade Bala Bello and Secretary , Comrade Nasiru Yakubu said the expulsion of Hon. Bature was unconstitutional and absolutely of no effect.

” The controversy emanates from an unverified and factional convention purportedly conducted by a splinter group claiming to act on behalf of the PDP,” they stated.

They noted that Bature remains a dependable political stabiliser to the party for dousing internal tensions and pathing for peaceful resolutions at critical moments, hence, remains an unshaken, fully, legally and unquestionable member of the PDP with unwavering commitment.

The forum added: “Attempt at labeling such a political stabiliser as ” anti party ” is not only false but shameful, stressing that those behind the decision we’re neither recognised nor sanctioned by the legitimate organs of the party.

While in solidarity with the former HoRs member, the forum described Bature  as a resilient and passionate politician who stood by the party at times of serious crisis to avoid plunging it into more deeper chaos.

  • Choosing governance over politics: Aliyu Sokoto’s example

Choosing governance over politics: Aliyu Sokoto’s example

    By Abubakar Dan Ali

The massive development witnessed in Sokoto state in the last 27 months is a testament to what could be achieved when an elected first-term governor focuses  on delivering the dividends of good governance, rather than being consumed in the send-less scheming for re-election. Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto has distanced  himself from the prevailing culture of perpetual politicking, as he has chosen to use up his initial four-year tenure to provide impactful projects and implement people-oriented policies across all sectors of the society for the people of Sokoto state who suffered from untold suffering between 2015-2023 in the hands of Aminu Tambuwal, the immediate past governor.

At the commissioning of the 3-million gallons per day Tamajewater scheme, and the long neglected Mabera road networks early July, Governor Sokoto delightfully  reiterated the fact that it is not yet time for politicking, as he is fully engrossed in the effort to positively alter the infrastructural landscape of Sokoto state, to speed up the tempo of economic and social activities. What sets Governor Ahmad Aliyu apart is his refusal to be distracted by the politics of 2027 and an opposition that believes that propaganda is its best weapon to wrestle back power. While other governors almost started scheming from their very first day in office and rallying support for second-term ambitions, he has remained singularly focused on the present. His mantra is simple but powerful: “I already have a mandate and I will let my performance speak for me.”

He has repeatedly invited all stakeholders in the better-Sokoto State project to forget active politicking for now, to stop their unhealthy game of distraction but instead, to suggest the best way forward and hold him accountable for his official actions and policy direction. Indeed, it amounts to gross disservice to the people when politicians use up their first tenure in office for political maneuvering, as if general elections are scheduled to hold tomorrow. Meanwhile, real governance takes the backstage, and the real needs of the people sacrificed on the altar of politics without purpose, and motion without movement.

Some students of politics have posited that part of the reason for the apparent slow rate of development nationwide is traceable to undue preoccupation with the re-election strategies, especially as it is applicable to the governors. Many of them do not do the necessary things in their first term; they fail to enforce laws, shy away from taking tough decisions, simply because they are fixated on the next election. By the time they eventually get the second term and they want to do something impactful, execute projects or initiate policies they are hardly completed, because of lack of time and most often than not only for the  next government abandon or dismantle everything.

About from lack of planning, lack of resources, the preoccupation with second term is another factor responsible for the lack of development.

We agree that governors are politicians and must play their game always, but we also agree with Governor Aliyu Sokoto that everything has its own time and seasons. When the time comes for politicking, he would definitely board the train and, of course, cruise to easy victory on the wings of his stellar performance. For now, he says, it is development all the way. If what the opposition wants is development of infrastructure for the betterment of the good people of Sokoto state, they should desist from unprofitable distraction of a working governor, but strive to hold him accountable for his stewardship.

Dr Aliyu’s choice of focusing on the job at hand is the game changer here, a sharp and commendable departure from the poor choices of Aminu Waziri Tambuwal who, immediately after his inauguration as governor in May, 2015, started to dream about the Presidency, hoping to take over from the then ailing President Buhari. Aso Rock again became his full and only preoccupation after snatching re-election by the skin of his teeth,in 2019. To him, the governorship seat was only a stepping stone to his dream, which was the presidency. It was not surprising that Tambuwal posted an abysmal governance record in all of his wasteful eight years. He left a legacy of spectacular failure, abandoning all the projects inherited from former Governor Aliyu Wamakko. Even the few projects he initiated by himself were equally abandoned. If ever there is a national award for the governor with the highest number of abandoned projects, Tambuwal would easily emerge as the natural winner.

Thankfully, Governor Aliyu Ahmad has made it a point of duty to complete all the projects abandoned by former governor Tambuwal, while also striving to, as much as practicable, to complete all projects initiated by his administration. In a state where the needs of the people are urgent and the challenges complex, he has chosen a path that is refreshingly different: to focus on impactful governance, to build with purpose, and to lead with results rather than political gamesmanship built on empty rhetoric. He stands out, not for the usual theatrics of power, but for the quiet, determined leadership rooted in service.

The outcome of Governor Aliyu’s good choices has been very impressive. In his 27 months of stewardship, his administration has completed more than 250 impactful infrastructural projects and social programmes cutting across education, agriculture, healthcare, housing, roads, water supply, rural electrification, urban beautification, security, human capital empowerment, law and civil service reforms, you name it!

One of the most notable achievements of his tenure is the revitalization of the healthcare sector. Under his leadership, several dilapidated health centers across rural communities have been rehabilitated and equipped, with new facilities built where needed. This has led to increased access to basic healthcare services for thousands of residents who had long been underserved.

In education, Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s commitment has been both strategic and compassionate. He has launched programmes aimed at reducing the out-of-school children population, especially among girls. Schools are being renovated, teachers trained, and instructional materials provided—all geared toward restoring the glory of education in the state.

Infrastructure, often the backbone of any development agenda, has not been neglected. Urban and rural roads, totally neglected by the Tambuwal administration, have been re-opened and reconstructed, easing transportation and boosting local economies. In urban areas, new drainage systems and street lighting projects have improved safety and mobility, while rural electrification efforts continue to brighten once-forgotten communities.

This uncommon discipline has earned him quiet respect across political divides. Critics have acknowledged his results, even when reluctant to praise him openly. Supporters, meanwhile, have grown more confident, seeing in him not just a politician, but a leader who values integrity, humility, and purpose.

What we see in the ongoing coalitions and political realignments is exactly what you get when the political climate is largely driven by inordinate personal ambition and endless scheming for power.  There seem to be no difference between winning a governorship seat and winning a football championship. When footballers compete for trophies, winning is the ultimate objective, and once the cup is lifted and celebrated, everybody begins to train and strategize for the next competition.

But this should not be the case. Ideally, winning of an election should mark the beginning of intensive work. Winners must like Governor Sokoto brace themselves for action and work tirelessly to implement the manifesto of their party, and deliver on the promises made to the electorate during campaign stumps. It is the performance of the governor or the president that should determine whether he gets rewarded with another term, or booted out of the way in favour of another party and new candidate.

Sadly, we find ourselves in a political climate that is far from the an ideal, where politicians like former Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state, behave as if winning an election is the same as winning a football trophy: once it is won, nothing else is required of the winner but to start training for the next competition. We, the good people of Sokoto state were shocked and totally disappointed that after winning the governorship position in 2015, Aminu Tambuwal virtually abandoned the responsibility of governance, holed himself up in Abuja, totally engrossed in the dream of becoming the President of Nigeria.

Again this why Governor Sokoto deserves commendation for remaining focused on the assignment at hand and for not seeing the governorship position as a stepping stone to the presidency. While there is absolutely nothing wrong being ambitious, part of why Aminu Tambuwal failed has been traced to his gross preoccupation with his presidential ambitions and the squandering of Sokoto state resources in funding it.

But it is somehow reassuring to have governors like Alex Otti of Abia State, Babagana Zulum of Borno and, of course, Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto who, in their respective first term, totally committed themselves to real governance, even in the face of insecurity and many other challenges.

But for the like of Governor Sokoto, we would have been canvassing for a single term of six years for governors and the president, so that once they are inaugurated, they would be aware that it is six years and nothing more, even though there would still be politics of succession, but it would definitely not be as acrimonious and all-consuming as the elected executive wanting to win his re-election from day one.

In many ways, Governor Ahmad Aliyu is redefining leadership in Nigeria—reminding us that public office is not a personal trophy, but a sacred trust. His administration may yet face challenges—no government is perfect—but his commitment to people-first governance is undeniable.

As Sokoto State continues to reap the dividends of this focused leadership, one thing is clear: history will remember Ahmad Aliyu not for the noise he made, but for the work he did—and the lives he changed by putting people before politics

  • Dasuki renews call to allocate seized 753 duplexes, apartments to military

Dasuki renews call to allocate seized 753 duplexes, apartments to military

Hon. Abdussamad Dasuki, representing Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State, has reiterated the call on the Federal Government to allocate the forfeited Abuja estate comprising 753 duplexes and apartments to the military to address the housing needs of its personnel.

Justice Jude Onwuegbuzi, on December 2, 2024, ordered the final forfeiture of an expansive estate spanning 150,500 square meters and comprising 753 duplexes and other apartments, located on Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, Abuja.

The massive Abuja estate belonging to former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, was ordered to be forfeited to the Federal Government because it was tied to corruption.

Dasuki’s renewed call on FG to allocate the massive housing estate to the military is coming on the heels of the official delivery of the estate to the Housing Ministry by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday.

The Housing Ministry has said it will offer the units for sale both to the public and for special government needs.

Dasuki, who first made his call during the last Armed Forces Remembrance Day, said in a statement on Wednesday that a major area where the wellbeing of military personnel and their families could be enhanced was in the area of housing.

He described adequate and decent housing as critical need of the military, adding that lack of it often leads to stress, low morale, and physical and emotional strain that could undermine the capacity of the military to carry out its duties effectively.

“We must ensure that those who keep us safe and their families have a decent place to lay their heads every night,” he said.

The lawmaker said doing so was a moral obligation the nation owes its heroes in active service, adding, “We must not allow this opportunity to address a critical area of military well-being to slip by. It is the right thing to do for those who keep us safe.”

Dasuki, who is also the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Shipping Services, said the forfeiture was indeed a milestone in the fight against corruption but a bigger milestone could be recorded in the use the forfeited estate was put to by government.

He said the forfeiture presents a low hanging fruit that can be plucked to address the housing needs of the military, particularly in the nation’s capital.

“By prioritising the welfare of the Armed Forces and their families, national security will be strengthened, operational readiness and effectiveness of the military will be enhanced, and our commitment to the wellbeing of those who keep us safe will be indubitable.

“We will also be showing clearly to these gallant men and women who bear arms in our defence that we are indeed grateful for their service to the nation,” Dasuki said.

He urged National Assembly leadership to urgently open discussions with the executive on the need to allocate the forfeited housing units to the military so that this rare opportunity of addressing the housing needs of the military in the nation’s capital was not missed.

“Our gratitude to these men and women who keep us safe and secure, and who bear arms to defend our territorial integrity must go beyond rhetoric. We must continually honour their sacrifices by catering for their welfare. It is the least we can do for them,” Dasuki stated.

Outrage over killing of monarch by abductors after collecting N60m

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday reiterated his determination to tackle terrorism and other forms of violence that threaten national security.

The President, who condemned the murder of Alhaji Isa Bawa, District Head of Gatawa District in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, assured that the culprits will not go unpunished.

The killing of the monarch by his abductors has sparked outrage and elicited condemnation by many individuals and groups, including the Northern Senators’ Forum, the Coalition of Northern Groups, and traditional rulers.

The deceased, who was in captivity for almost a month, was murdered after the payment of N60 million and six motorcycles as ransome to his captors to secure his release.

President Tinubu said in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, that the attack on the royal father was disturbing, adding that it is a “heinous act” that deserves a decisive response.

The president,  who sympathised with the bereaved family, the Gobir Emirate, and the government of Sokoto State, prayed for the repose of his soul and comfort for his family during this difficult time.

The statement reads: “President Bola Tinubu strongly condemns the tragic circumstances leading to the passing of His Royal Highness, Alhaji Isa Bawa, the District Head of Gatawa District in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

“President Tinubu described the savage attack on the traditional ruler as deeply disturbing and a heinous act that will not go without a decisive response.

    How Bawa was killed

Before he was killed, the late Bawa was kidnapped along with his son. They were in captivity for 25 days.

The 74 year-old monarch was recently seen in a viral video clip on social media appealing to the state government and the Sultanate to secure his release.

A member of Sokoto State House of Assembly,   Aminu Almustapha Boza (Sabon Birni Constituency) said the monarch went through severe torture and beating by gunmen suspected to be bandits.

He explained that his captives  earlier demanded a ransom of N900 million before they later decided to accept  N500 million.

He said: “We suspect a foul play since when the abductors of the district head reduced the ransom to N60 million and six motorcycles, which were immediately made available to them, only to hear that they killed him after collecting the ransom.”

However, Boza confirmed  the release of the deceased’s son, who was kidnapped along his late father.

The son is said to be hospitalized in Sabon Birni General Hospital.

The late Bawa was kidnapped along Sokoto – Sabon Birni Road on July 29 after attending a meeting of traditional rulers in Sokoto, the state capital.

The lawmaker said the remains of the late monarch had been laid to rest according to Islamic injunctions.

    Northern senators condemn attack

The Northern Senators’ Forum condemned the murder, urging the government to apprehended the killers.

The group, in a statement by its chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’adua, in Abuja, commiserated with the family of the deceased and urged security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.

It reads: “His abduction, torture, and eventual killing by bandits are a heinous and unacceptable act that has left us all in shock. Traditional rulers like Alhaji Isa Muhammad Bawa represented the first point of leadership in various communities across Nigeria.

“They embody the rich cultural heritage and values of our people. It is therefore sacrosanct that they be protected by law enforcement agencies. The killing of a traditional ruler is not only a crime against the individual, but also an attack on the very fabric of our society.

“I urge the security agencies to intensify their efforts to track down the perpetrators of this heinous crime and bring them to book. We cannot allow such acts of terrorism to go unpunished.

“It is imperative that measures are put in place to prevent such incidents from happening again, as they are sacrilegious and undermine the traditional institutions that are essential to our national identity.

“To the people of Sokoto State, I offer my condolences for the loss of this respected leader. His demise is a tragedy that affects us all, and we must come together to ensure that justice is served.

“I want to assure you that the Armed Forces and other security agencies have been making significant progress in dismantling terrorist enclaves in the Northern States. This progress will only intensify our efforts to protect Nigerians and ensure that such brutal acts are not repeated.”

    His death devastating,  says Wamakko

The All Progressives Congress (APC) leader in Sokoto State , Senator Aliyu  Wamakko, said Bawa’s death was shocking and devastating.

He said in a statement by his media aid,  Bashar Abubakar, that the deceased was a leader with a good heart and a peace-loving gentleman.”

Wamakko said: “We will continue to advise government at all levels on the need  to intensify  efforts towards bringing an end to the banditry and criminal activities  bedeviling the Northern region and country.”

    Northern group frowns at attack

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) condemned the murder, saying that it is a grave assault on the collective conscience of the society.

The group said in a statement by its National Coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, that the murder was  totally unacceptable, adding that It must not be repeated.

The statement reads: “The CNG, similarly, strongly condemns Sokoto State Government for its despicable, nonchalant and lackadaisical attitude toward the handling of the plight of the late emir, which led to the unfortunate murder in the hand of the bandits.

“This depicts manifest incompetence and utter demonization of our cultural and religious heritage by the overnment that is supposed to promote preservation of our tradition and pedigree.

“The CNG is deeply concerned that the government has failed to prioritize the security and well-being of its people.

“The CNG notes that although there were incidents of abductions of traditional rulers, particularly in Zamfara, this abominable murder remains the most devastating that has sunk the collapse of our security into the ditch of despair.

“For those still languishing in the bandits’ den, it is absolutely repugnant with human civility for anyone to live under such cruel circumstances.

“We pray that May Almighty God would save them from captivity across varied vast expanse of criminal hideouts in the North.

“The CNG calls on governments at all levels to recommit themselves to genuinely addressing the security challenges that have plagued our region and rendered us hopeless.

“The protection of lives and property must be the top priority, and every effort must be made to restore peace and stability to our communities”.
