    Tambuwal: I won’t sack teachers

    Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, has promised that his administration will not sack any teacher from the state civil service.

    “But we will not fail to reassign any teacher that does not have the requisite qualifications to be in the classroom,” Tambuwal said on Monday in Dogon-Daji, Tambuwal Local Government Area.

    The governor made the promise in his address at the annual national congress of the old Boys’ association of his Alma-mater, Government Secondary School, Dogon Daji.

    He said: “Beginning from the next budget, government will ensure continuous training and retraining of teachers to update their knowledge and make them conform to modern teaching techniques.

    “Huge sums of money have been budgeted for that purpose.

    “Let me announce it here that we do not plan to retrench any teacher working with the state government.

    “In fact we need qualified teachers to address shortfall in numbers.

    “What we will not condone in our schools are unqualified teachers who have nothing to offer our children.

    “If after giving you the necessary training, we discovered that you do not have the capacity or enthusiasm to teach, we will reassign you to where your expertise if most needed.”

    While commending the executive of the association for its diligence in the face of mounting challenges, Tambuwal solicited its support in government’s efforts to take Sokoto state to greater heights.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that at the end of the congress, Alhaji Nasiru Idris was elected national President of the association while Abdullahi Muhammed was elected Secretary.

    Sokoto Senators withdraw petitions against Abubakar

    The coast for confirmation may have been cleared Wednesday for the Sokoto State ministerial nominee, Aisha Abubakar.

    Three senators from the state withdrew petition against her nomination as a minister.

    Following her nomination by President Muhammadu Bubari for screening and confirmation by the Senate, some groups from Sokoto State including Concerned Women of Sokoto State, petitioned the Senate against her nomination on the ground of alleged incompetence.

    The petitioners also claimed that the nominee is not known in the Sokoto State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC).

    The petition was subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges for consideration.

    Abubakar had already appeared before the Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions Committee where the petition was dismissed because it was wrongly addressed.

    The petitioners were asked to go back and re-address their petition properly.

    They did but Wednesday following consultation senators representing Sokoto State wrote to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, withdrawing the petition.

    They asked the Senate to screen and confirm the nominee.

    Senator Kabiru Gaya (Kano North) prayed the Senate to discontinue the consideration of the petition since those that presented it has withdrawn the document.

    Gaya said that it is unnecessary for the Committee to submit report on the petition since it had been withdrawn.

    Senate President, Saraki, asked the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Samuel Anyanwu to discontinue with the petition.

    Tambuwal submits 22 commissioners nominees to Assembly

    A list of 22 nominees for appointment as commissioners has been sent to the Sokoto state House of Assembly Thursday for confirmation.

    This was contained in letter send by the state governor Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal and presented in the Assembly by the Clerk Alhaji Muhammad Mainasara.

    The letter by Tambuwal stated that, “The nomination is in line with section 192 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.

    “The nominees are selected after wide consultation within the spectre of our society and in conformity with section 14 (4) of the Constitution, they are person of proven integrity with good track record in their various vocations.

    “I am confident that, they will bring to bear their wide experience in
    propelling the formation and execution of government policies and programmes for the overall development of the state “. The letter added

    It added that the nominees are, the state Deputy Governor Alhaji Ahmad Aliyu, Alhaji Sahabi Gada, Alhaji Umar Tambuwal, Alhaji Saidu Umar, Alhaji Abdulkadir Jeli, Alhaji Arzika Tureta, Alhaji Jabbi Kilgore, Alhaji Sirajo Gatawa, Alhaji Mani Maishinko.

    Others incude: Alhaji Tukur Alkali, Alhaji Muhammadu Sifawa, Alhaji Bello Gwiwa, Barrister Suleman Usman, Alhaji Nasiru Zarummai, Alhaji Isah Achida, Alhaji Aminu Bello, Alhaji Bala Kokani, Alhaji Bello Goronyo, Alhaji Manir
    Dan’iya, Hajiya Kulu Abdullahi, Dr. Shehu Kakale and Alhaji Musa Ausa.

    In a related development, the Speaker Alhaji Salihu Maidaji Thursday received the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on a solidarity rally in support of President Muhammadu Buhari’s fight against corruption in the country.

    The Speaker who spoke through his deputy Speaker, Alhaji Abubakar Magaji while receiving them, expressed his readiness and commitment to partnership with NLC and all workers in Sokoto for the development of the state and the Country at large.

    However, the rally was organized by NLC in collaboration with students’ union bodies to support the anticorruption crusade by the President.

    Tambuwal bans tree felling in Sokoto

    Sokoto state government has joined in marking this year’s tree planting campaign with a ban on the practice of felling trees for use as firewood in homes by households.

    The ban is in line with measures to curb desert encroachment and land degradation in the state.

    Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal made the announcement at the flag-off of this year’s tree planting campaign at Kawadata, Goronyo LGA of the state.

    Tambuwal explained that to mitigate the effect of the new policy on rural dwellers, government will provide modern stoves while encouraging residents to explore other sources of energy like coal.

    However, this year’s campaign theme is : sustainable ecosystem restoration.

    [ad id=”403656″]The governor further assured of the state government readiness to combat desertification and land degradation while urging residents to cultivate the culture of planting of cash trees like gum Arabic and date palm noting that they would not only help in preserving the environment, but also alleviate poverty and tackle unemployment.

    He pointed out that growing of trees was both an environmental and spiritual obligation, adding that Islam encourages planting of trees for the benefit of communities.

    In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Environment, Garba Muhammed Sarkin-Kudu said for this year, a two kilometre shelter-belt will be established in the three senatorial zones of the state.

    He said in addition, the government’s house to house tree planting campaign has been carried in the 400 housing estates across the state to provide shelter and serve as windbreak.

    Medical team disqualifies five prospective Muslim pilgrims in Sokoto

    The medical team set up by the Sokoto State Pilgrims Welfare Agency (PWA) has disqualified five sick, aged and pregnant prospective Muslim pilgrims from performing this year’s Hajj.

    The Chairman of the team, Dr Bello Ahmed, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto on Saturday.

    He said the five were disqualified during the ongoing statewide medical screening of prospective pilgrims from the 23 local government areas of the state.

    Ahmed said one of them was an 85-year old man from Goronyo Local Government Area suffering from chronic hypertension.

    The chairman added that the four other disqualified prospective pilgrims were from Silame and Wamakko local government areas who were found to be four months pregnant each.

    He said “one of them is from Silame Local Government Area, while the remaining three are from Wamakko.’’

    He explained that “although Islam does not prohibit a pregnant woman from performing Hajj, the medical team is looking at it from the health angle.

    “Due to the rigours of the exercise, it can cause miscarriage to a pregnant woman, which can lead to excessive bleeding and even death.’’

    The chairman disclosed that the medical team would also disqualify any prospective pilgrim suffering from mental problems, disability and any female who was four months pregnant and above.

    He explained that the exercise had so far been completed in Isa, Sabon-Birni, Goronyo, Wamakko and Silame local governments.

    According to him, none of the intending pilgrims from Isa and Sabon-Birni local governments is disqualified.

    A total of 5,180 intending pilgrims from Sokoto State are expected to perform this year’s Hajj in the holy land of Makkah. This year’s number fell short of 20 after reduction of allocated seats nation-wide.

    The chairman of state’s Pilgrim’s Welfare Agency (PWA), Alhaji Muntari Maigona disclosed this to newsmen in Sokoto.

    Maigona said: “It was arrived at after the reduction of the 20 per cent of all the intending pilgrims from the 36 states and the FCT by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).”

    According to him, the state was initially allocated 6, 450 seats for its 23 local government areas.

    “But, when the need to reduce the number by 20 per cent arose, we conducted balloting across the state and successfully effected the reduction,” he added.

    He further said that the agency had already concluded all necessary arrangements to ensure a hitch-free exercise.

    Maigona said: “The local government areas had refunded the hajj fares of all the intending pilgrims who were affected by the 20 per cent reduction.

    “All those who were affected and needed their money back had since been refunded across the 23 local government areas.

    He maintained that “for those who want the agency and the local government areas to keep the money until the 2014 hajj exercise, would be given automatic seats next year.”

    However, Maigona announced that the state government had since given the agency the funds required to successfully conduct the hajj exercise.

    Similarly, the agency’s Media Assistant, Alhaji Faruk Umar, said that public enlightenment has been intensified by the media unit.

    Umar said the aim was to sensitise the intending pilgrims from the state on how to perform the basic hajj rites, be law-abiding and know how to safeguard their basic travelling allowances, among others.

    The Sokoto State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources,Alhaji Arzika Tureta, has said that government spent N950 million to buy 150 tractors in 2012.

    Tureta told journalists in Sokoto that all the tractors had since been distributed to both large and small scale farmers on loan basis.

    He said this was done to ensure a massive production of food in the state.

    The commissioner said that the exercise was aimed at modernising farming methods through the employment of modern agriculture technology.

    He said government would continue to use the available land at its disposal to boost dry season farming in the state.

    Tureta said the establishment of the College of Agriculture, Wurno, was also aimed at preparing youths for modern farming techniques.

    He said it was also aimed at training highly skilled manpower for the state’s agricultural sector.

    “We are blessed with vast land needed to produce various crops and we will use all the available technologies in the farming sector to meet the set objectives,” he said.

    Tureta also called on farmers not to hesitate to report any outbreak of epidemics during and after the rainy season for necessary action.

    Wamakko revives water schemes

    The Sokoto State government has taken steps to scale back rural-urban drift by stepping up infrastructure at the state’s grassroots areas.

    The government reactivated no fewer than 46 hand pumps at the cost of N9.5 milliona and also purchased chemicals for drilling worth N9.5 million. Some 89 water schemes have likewise been completed at the cost of N112 million.

    Not done, the administration of Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko extended water scheme to Salame and rehabilitated water projects in Tungar Malam Rashidu and Binga in Gwadabawa Local Government Area and at Yaka and Karfen Chana in Gudu Local Government Area.

    Another achievement of the Wamakko administration was the provision of three solar water schemes at Tangaza, Rabah and Kebbe local government areas as well as construction and erection of 50 water tanks with the capacity of 10,000 gallons each at the cost of N106 million.

    In 2009, the government budgeted N510,376,963.00 that was used in reactivation of 200 motorised rural water schemes; construction of solar-powered boreholes, drilling of borehole in hard and soft formations, provision of generator house, overhead tanks, purchase of drilling rigs and supporting supervision vehicles.

    In 2012, the administration constructed 10 complete motorised rural water schemes at Hurumi, Gandun–Ardo, Wauru, Adosa, Tungar Toro, Kwala Mamman, Kyadawa and Madorawa new settlement at the cost of N91,931,862.58.

    Similarly, nine complete package solar-powered rural water schemes were constructed at the cost of N79 million.  Also 50 overhead tanks which have capacity to store up to 5,000 gallons of water in different locations in the state were completed at the cost of N106, 870,800.

    The administration also awarded contract for the construction/drilling of 32 complete package solar-powered rural water schemes across the state at the cost of N270, 068,816.00.  The government is aggressive about provision of water to the rural areas as clean water complements healthcare delivery services through avoidance of water borne diseases.

    The administration procured drilling chemicals, equipment and casting screen materials at the cost of N18, 000,000 and submersible pumps with starter electrical cables at the cost of N28, 500,000.  It has completed Danbar Kwannawa water scheme in Illela Local Government Area at the cost of N3 million.  It also procured another batch of submersible pumps, starters, electrical voltage and modern geographical/geological equipment at the cost of N27, 888,724 to enhance exploration for water and its distribution to rural areas.

    Governor Wamakko’s administration completed motorised water scheme at Hiliya in Tambuwal Local Government at the cost of N930, 000 and that of Gidan Ali at the cost of N534, 000.  The government awarded contract for the construction of four complete package of solar-powered rural water schemes at the sum of N34, 590,956.64 in four local government areas namely, Tudu, Bashire, Birjingo and Mashaya.

    The Sokoto State government believes in total provision of amenities through the poverty reduction programme.  For this reason, the Department of Water Supply has embarked on provision of more water to the rural areas.  It embarked on motorised water schemes that target 89 of the schemes across the state.  The state has expended about N111, 534,000 on this project.

    In similar manner, the department has provided 50 overhead tanks and 50 boreholes throughout the state.  The joint contract which cost N272, 500,000, has been completed.

    The department also reactivated 26 hand pumps and handed them over to the communities.  It has also embarked on the construction of 40 solar-powered /motorised water scheme as a way of supplementing shortage of electricity to power the scheme.

    Having an ardent belief in equitable distribution of amenities, the administration of Governor Wamakko, through the Department of Rural Water Scheme, has been able to distribute water to all nook and cranny of the state so that every citizen would enjoy the benefits of democracy and good governance.
