Anambra: What if Soludo’s opponents were right?

Sir: In Anambra, political opponents of the state governor, Chukwuma Soludo, are doing the much they can. Even nonpartisan residents of the state are not left out.

They keep asking questions and making comments about the issue of governance in the state; the conduct and activities of his appointees among others. That’s cool. Nigerians are always encouraged to get involved in the governance of their country.

But some of these criticisms, and in some cases, attacks don’t seem to fall within the track. When you listen or read some of them, you wonder if there was more to them than what exists in the open space.

On social media, newsstands and even in social gatherings, some people vilify and excoriate Soludo, dismissing him as a poor performing and unserious governor whenever the issue of Anambra politics and governance pop up.

If they didn’t tell you how the man had shut out everyone so that only him and those they described as his cronies would ‘enjoy’ the taxpayers’ money alone, they would tell you that he had not done anything meaningful for the state since he assumed office on March 17, 2022.

None of these persons, to the best of my knowledge, has stepped forward with evidence to back up their claims. I trust that many people, including journalists, would be glad to pick evidence from them and then take the matter up from there.

What can be seen, touched and felt today in Anambra is that Soludo is working. It is not news anymore that he has started walking his talks in the area of road and other infrastructural developments in the state.

And there has been a tremendous improvement in the quality of work being done unlike in the past; especially in the last eight years.

From Awka to Onitsha, Nnewi to EkwulÍbËa, road constructions are ongoing. As of today, well over 400 kilometres of roads plus two flyovers are under construction in all the 21 Local Government Areas of the state, according to the figures from the state Ministry of Information. Not just that the government said so, the work being done is seen, touched and felt by Ndi Anambra and others.

Beyond the road projects, the construction of other important infrastructure such as bridges and administrative buildings and others are also ongoing in various parts of the state where they’re needed. There are also the renovation and equipment of some government establishments in the state.

One of them is the new Government House that is being built in Awka, the state capital. The new facility would also be housing a new Governor’s Lodge.

The completion of that project would mean the end of many years of not having a befitting Government House. In fact, it would mean that the about 32-year-old jinx of not having a proper Government House had been broken.

Beyond that, the construction of an open drug market is ongoing in Oba community, Idemmili South Local Government Area of the state. Official information from the government showed that the drug market would be the largest in Africa when completed.

Again, there is the development of the Pharmaceutical Industrial Park in Ogboji community, Orumba South LGA. It was gathered that about 15 manufacturers, out of the expected 100, had already signed up to it.

Beyond the road and other infrastructural developments, the agricultural revolution of the present administration in the state is changing the narratives in that sector.

Recently, hybrid coconut and palm seedlings were shared to many households in the state. The number of the seedlings, according to the government, was over 1,100,000. And the households, it said, were over 100,000.

These seedlings were shared at the communal level to ensure that they got into the hands of those who should have them.

That move was targeted at driving poverty away, encouraging and improving agro-industrialisation and supporting the efforts towards a green and environmentally sustainable state.

To save cost and to reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere, the Soludo-led administration has converted many diesel-powered streetlights to solar ones, thereby promoting a clean energy generation and usage.

The government placed the figure of the streetlights so converted at 25,000. That move does not only save cost for the state, it also encourages nightlife and powers its economy.

So, what if Soludo’s political opponents and critics were right?

What if the accusations and allegations of poor performance slammed on the governor’s less than two years of reign as the state’s helmsman were correct? Be the judge!

    • Govt: no cause for alarm

Anambra State health pensioners have implored Governor Chukwuma Soludo to pay them N850million arrears owed them by the government.

They lamented that four of their colleagues have died as a result of the hardship they are facing.

They used the moment to organise a prayer section for God to touch Soludo’s heart to remember them.

The Chairman of the retired health pensioners, Comrade Rafael Okoye, said the problem might not be from Soludo but his commissioner for local government and secretary of Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC).

He said there was a ‘consent judgment’ delivered by the National Industrial Court in Awka, signed by the commissioner for justice and attorney general that 10 per cent of the monthly local government allocation should go to the pensioners.

Okoye said rather than begin instalment payment as ordered by the court; they reneged on the terms of settlement, claiming lack of funds.

He said the hardship was instrumental to the death of four of their members, adding that the Soludo he knew would love to pay. He alleged that they believed a few persons in his administration were responsible for their current situation.

‘Please governor direct JAAC to pay health pensioners as recommended by the attorney-general and ordered by the court’, ‘Local government monthly statutory allocation is more than N5billion’, among others

Okoye said they had 127 health pensioners who retired from the local government service of Anambra State from January 2015 to December 2019.

He added that they were owed N850 million, arising from the inadvertent omission of their names in the implementation of 60 per cent Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).

A government official, who preferred anonymity, told The Nation that Soludo had them in his plans.

The source said their issue would be looked into very soon, noting that there was no cause for alarm.

Stop the killing now, Anambra community leaders beg Soludo

The leaders of Enugwu-Nanka in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra state are restless following the number of killings in their community.

As a result, they have sent a Save our Souls message to the state Governor Chukwuma Soludo to come to the aid of the community to avoid a total breakdown of law and order.

In a letter addressed to the governor by the leadership of Enugwu Nanka village and signed by Joe Omehaa as chairman and Peter Godson Oforkansi as secretary, the village union said there had been division in Nanka as some powerful indigenes were allegedly seeking to silence the majority for standing by truth.

The leaders cited several incidents of killings and attempted assassinations in the community, adding that the new norm was to stop police investigation after killing.

In the letter which reads in part, they said, “Your Excellency Sir, one of the killings happened in 2021. A boy of 25 years, Mr. Toochukwu Onyemelukwe was murdered in Enugwu Nanka village square, along the main road at the popular Ukwumango Nwanyi Uzo village square – an open public place.

“This was simply because the young boy was from the opposing faction of the village union, the Enugwu Nanka Village Development Union, against the faction (ODU) being controlled by some powerful persons.

“Mr. Martin Okeke, who reported the murder of Mr. Toochukwu Onyemelukwe to the Police, has met many assassination attempts, just because he reported to the Police about that crime.

“Mr. Martin Okeke’s life has been continuously threatened by the suspected culprits since they discovered he reported the murder to the police.

“Okeke has had assassination attempts over his life, he has not been sleeping in his house and his wife is in exile for fear of being killed.”

The group, therefore, called on Soludo to order for an investigation into the numerous killings of innocent souls in Nanka, and also to investigate reasons for having many factions of the town union, which according to them, had resulted in the abnormalities, sacrileges and abominations in Nanka.

Speaking about the factions, the group said: “Both Nanka Town Union and villagers are into factions and frictions due to high handedness and kill-and-cover-up activities in Nanka.

“For some period of time now Your Excellency, you might have heard of the number of murders of some innocent souls in Nanka, murder which some of the killings were perpetrated by unknown killers; but the ones that their killers are known for are protected from Police investigation by the leaders of the influential group.

“We are thinking these factions may result to a total collapse of our dear town if not checked; also, we seek that the Police be allowed to make proper investigations of crimes in Nanka,” the leaders said.
