APC to Ohanaeze: call Soludo, Otti to order over suspension, arrest of monarchs

    • ’Actions affront against Igbo traditional institutions’

Southeast zone of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Ohanaeze Ndigbo to call Governors Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra and Alex Otti of Abia to order over suspension, intimidation and arrest of monarchs.

The call followed the suspension of the traditional ruler of Neni Community, Igwe Damian Ezeani, by Governor Soludo and arrest of the favourite for Arochukwu traditional stool in Abia State, Godwin Kanu Idei, over false allegations of impersonation.

Ezeani had, during the Yuletide, conferred chieftaincy title on the lawmaker representing Anambra South and a member of the APC, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

APC described the actions of Abia and Anambra state governments as an attempt to make Igbo crowns and stools an appendage of the APGA- led government of Anambra State and the LP-led government in Abia State.

In a statement by its Zonal Chairman, Dr. Ijeomah Arodiogbu, the party said it had intervened in the matter in the two localities, condemning the acts and describing them as an aberration and an affront against Igbo traditional institutions.

It called on the pan-Igbo group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, prominent Igbo all over the country as well as Nigerians to condemn such acts, as they undermined the tradition of Ndigbo.

The statement said: “We received with shock the recent suspension of an esteemed traditional ruler, HRH Damian Onwuamaeze Ezeani, the Igwe of Neni Community. At first we thought there were some untruths in the story until its confirmation.

“This came, coupled with the arrest and illegal detention of the acclaimed Eze Aro of Arochukwu Kingdom, Godwin Kanu Idei, for impersonation even though Idei had been rightfully crowned as the Eze Aro by the traditional ruler of Ibom Isii, Eze Nwa Kanu.

“It is indeed sad and is deserving of full condemnation such an aberrational affront against Igbo traditional institutions, which we should cherish and nurture, rather than drag in the mud.

“What is Igwe Neni’s offence? That he conferred a title on a senator of APC extraction? Is he the first to have done so? Or is it merely politics, otherwise can we not see this as a move to make the prestigious crowns and stools in Anambra State as an appendage of the APGA-led administration?

“What are the offences of the Eze Ibom Isii or Eze Idei that the Abia State Government under Alex Otti has to suspend the former and arrest the latter when they were just carrying out their duties as custodians of our tradition?

“It is obvious that Otti is trying to impose the other person, Pastor Eberechukwu Oji, who is unpopular with Ndi Arochukwu, on the people.

“We thus call on the Igbo all over the world, and the leadership of the pan Igbo organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and other Igbo groups, likewise well- meaning Nigerians to call the administrations of Chukwuma Soludo and Alex Otti to order.

“Will a Yoruba governor treat a first- class traditional ruler in such a manner or a Fulani leader?

“The Eze Aro remains about the oldest traditional stool in Igbo land. It is highly revered and should not be desecrated by the governor in his political mix-up.

“The Aro kingdom far predates the coming of the white man and colonial era. It’s not an autonomous community, created by any government.”

    • Another ruler apologises to governor for giving title without permission

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has suspended the traditional ruler of Neni, Igwe Damian Ezeani, in Anaocha Local Government, indefinitely.

The reason, The Nation gathered, was that Igwe Ezeani conferred chieftaincy title on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) to challenge his (Soludo’s) governorship in 2025.

The state government said through the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Collins Nwabunwanne, the monarch did not get permission for doing such.

One of the leaders in Neni, who spoke with The Nation yesterday, but preferred anonymity, said Prof. Soludo’s annoyance was that the monarch conferred on Ubah a chieftaincy title (Odenjinji- meaning like tornado) .

Senator Ubah and Senator Uche Ekwunife have not hidden their interest in contesting the governorship election in 2025 on a joint ticket.

The arrangement has unsettled the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) team in the state, including the governor.

However, a statement by the government signed by Nwabunwanne, said the order as well as directives by lawful authorities could not be tolerated “in the new Anambra of today.”

“We have received confirmed reports that you, as traditional ruler of Neni, conferred such a phantom chieftaincy title today on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah in violation of the Code of Conduct and without clearance from the ministry.

“Whether or not your action was for pecuniary reasons as being insinuated in many quarters, is irrelevant. What is important is that your action is an affront to order and good governance.

“In the light of the above, and for order and good governance, I am directed to inform you that Mr. Governor has in the exercise of his powers under Section 2 (C) of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers (Amendment) Law, 2020, suspended your recognition as Traditional Ruler of Neni until further notice.

“You are also by this letter, required to show cause why your Certificate of Recognition should not be withdrawn in line with the Traditional Rulers Law.

“In the meantime, you are advised in your own interest, to stop parading yourself forthwith, as the traditional ruler of Neni community.

“A vast majority of traditional rulers conduct their exalted office with dignity and integrity and stick to the Code of Conduct and directives of the ministry.

“However, a tiny few still act recklessly and in total disregard for the Code of Conduct of their office and directives of the supervising ministry,” the government said.

The embattled traditional ruler of Nawfia community in Njikoka Local Government of Anambra State, Igwe Daniel Obelle, has apologised to Governor Soludo for flouting the code of conduct guiding the conferment of chieftaincy titles.

The monarch, on January 4, despite having court issue, conferred chieftaincy titles on over 40 persons ”in recognition of their commitments towards human capital development.”

The traditional ruler tendered the apology in a statement he signed and made available to reporters yesterday in Awka.

“My attention has been drawn to a statement by the Commissioner for Local Government & Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Tony Collins Nwabunwanne, alluding to some Ndi Igwe in Anambra State that recently conferred chieftaincy awards on certain personalities without clearance from the state government.

“I wish to state that as a newcomer to the royal throne of Nawfia Community, I was not aware of the existence of the circular in question. Besides, I am not a member of the State Traditional Rulers Council where the said circular was issued.

“In the peculiar circumstances, I declare my unalloyed loyalty to Governor Soludo and my unreserved apology for the omission of not obtaining his approval before conferring the chieftaincy awards on deserving citizens, who were thoroughly screened before the awards were bestowed on them.”

Anambra  pensioners beg Soludo to pay N850m arrears

    • There’s no cause for alarm, gov insists

Anambra State health pensioners have begged the state governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo to pay them 850 million naira arrears owed them by the government after retirement.

The retirees lamented that four of their members had lost their lives as a result of the hardship they were facing.

While appealing to the governor, they used the moment to organize a prayer session for God to touch Soludo’s heart to remember them.

The Chairman of the retired health workers pensioners in the state, Comrade Rafael Okoye, said the problem might not be from Soludo but from his Commissioner for Local Government and Secretary of the Joint Account Allocation Committee JAAC.

He said there was a ‘consent judgement’ delivered by the National Industrial Court in Awka which was signed by the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General that 10% of the monthly local government allocation should go to the pensioners.

He explained that rather than commence installment payment as ordered by the court, they reneged on the terms of settlement, claiming lack of funds.

Okoye, said the hardship was instrumental to the death of four of their members, adding that Soludo he knew would love to pay, saying that they believe few persons in his administration were responsible for their present situation.

Others were, ‘Please governor direct JAAC to pay health pensioners as recommended by the Attorney-General and ordered by the court,’ Local Government monthly statutory Allocation is more than N5 billion,’ among others

Okoye said they had 127 Health pensioners who retired from the local government service of Anambra State from January 2015 to December 2019.

He added that they were owed 850 million naira, arising from the inadvertent omission of their names in the implementation of 60% consolidated Health salary structure(CONHESS)

However, one of the government officials who did not want to be mentioned, told The Nation that Soludo had them in his plans.

The source further said that very soon, their issue would be looked into, adding that there was no cause for alarm.
