  • Man sues NDLEA for son’s death

A 62-year old man, Mr. Michael Ehigie, has sued the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for alleged extra-judicial killing of his son, Uyi.

Ehigie alleged that his son was shot on November 14, 2016 by NDLEA officials, who were patrolling Benin-Akure Road.

He said his son was driving his commercial truck marked XC 638 RBC on the Benin-Akure Road when he was ordered to stop by the NDLEA officials from Ondo Division.

Ehigie alleged that his son was shot without any cause.

He said the NDLEA officials first rushed him to Ondo State Medical Science Hospital, but he was later taken to the Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Akure, where he died on November 24, 2016.

Ehigie said NDLEA had offered automatic employment for any graduate from the family and payment of N1,168,250.00 being the amount incurred on medical bills, funeral and other miscellaneous expenses.

He said the agency did not agree to the full terms of settlement.

In the suit filed at the Federal High Court in Akure, Ondo State, Ehigie is seeking a “declaration that the seizure and continued detention of the deceased’s road worthy vehicle since November 14, 2016 is unlawful and unconstitutional.”

He is asking for an order directing the NDLEA to release the deceased’s vehicle.

Ehigie requested an order that he is entitled to special damages of N14,288,250.00 (Fourteen Million, Two Hundred and Eighty Eight

Thousand, Two Hundred and Fifty Naira) and general damages of

N660,000.00 (Six Hundred and Sixty Million Naira).

The case has been adjourned till January 30.

  • Family demands justice for son’s death

The family of 27-year-old Emeka Anionwu, who was murdered in Warri, has rejected claims by the family of his girlfriend and the police that he was killed  by robbers.

Emeka was reported dead by Chief Athan Iwuchukwu, father to his girlfriend, Chioma, and special assistant to ex-Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan on Non Indigenes Affairs.

Emeka passed the night in Iwuchukwu’s house on the insistence of Chioma.

Although spokesman of the Delta State command, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, said the deceased was shot dead by robbers, about 3:30 am last Monday, at the Enerhen home of Iwuchukwu, the Anionwu family rejected the claim, describing it as a “cheap cover up to avoid uncovering a premeditated murder”.

The Nation gathered from the sister of the deceased, Lilian Anionwu, that Iwuchukwu told the police Emeka was one of the robbers who stormed his home, but got killed.

Lilian told reporters in Warri: “No robber killed my brother. He was murdered. The police have a duty to find out. My brother and Chioma have been having an affair for two years and, her parents, just like ours are aware of the relationship. Whether her father approves of the affair is not the issue here.

“On the fateful August 28, Chioma came to our Edjeba home to meet Emeka, who just returned from work offshore. They left at 5 pm to the Enerhen home of her dad. They were supposed to return to Edejeba but they apparently stayed back on Chioma’s insistence that the parents, who travelled, may no longer return till the day after.

“When Chief Athan Iwuchukwu, Chioma’s father visited the Enerhen Police station the next day, he said in his first statement, my brother was among the robbers, who attacked his home, and got killed. He never mentioned my brother was guest to her daughter, that they both slept in the house, with Chioma’s brother.

“The DPO was shocked after hearing my account and that of Chioma and he called the IPO to ask Iwuchukwu to change his statement on caution, saying the matter was not robbery but a suspected murder. Chioma and his father know how and why my brother had to die. They need to be questioned”, she demanded.

Also, an aunt of the deceased, Jane Anionwu, raised questions on Iwuchukwu’s claims, and the circumstances surrounding her nephew’s death. She demanding the former governor’s aide be investigated.

“Chioma’s father claimed he was not home when he raised an alarm of robbery at his residence about 3.30 am. The police who went there saw the place locked, but my brother who was supposed to be in with Chioma and his brother was the one killed by the robbers outside their gate? That story is too true to be believed”, she said.

When contacted, Chief Iwuchukwu responded that the matter was before the police and it was best to allow the police do their job.

DSP Aniamaka, in a report, said “three robbers, ostensibly about to commit their act, were resisted by Emeka Anionwu, and he was shot dead. That is the much we know for now, but we are investigating to bring these robbers to book.

“We are working on it. Immediately we got wind of the attack, our men, led by a superintendent, moved in but unfortunately they had left. We took the body to the mortuary and took inventory of the expended cartridge”, Aniamaka said.

  • Family seeks justice over son’s death in custody

Family seeks justice over son’s death in custody

Family of a 19-year-old detainee who died in custody last month has cried out for justice.

Pastor Gabriel Atansuyi, father of Ifedolapo, 19, who died in Okokomaiko Awo Police Post, Adeniji Adele on February 25, refuted the police claim that his son killed himself.

He said it was impossible for his son to hang himself with his shirt when suspects are detained with only their underwear on.

He said the phone, which his son was said to have stolen, has been found.

“I was told by a reliable source that the phone, an iphone, was found in a tricycle by the driver and it has been handed over to the owner,” he said.

He explained how the incident happened: “On the day my son was taken to the police station, he was asleep, the second son of my brother’s wife came to wake him up to run an errand for a woman (Tessy) that came for prayers in the church, ahead of her marriage on February 26.  Tessy sent my son to deposit money for her in the bank, which he did. He also sent him to the eatery three times during which the phone got missing. Because my son got the phone missing, Tessy and my brother’s wife, Esther shouted at him, saying he must produce the phone. I intervened and pleaded for patience, but my voice fell on deaf ears.  Now they have found the phone, but my son is dead.”

He said his son told him how he was threatened before he was handed over to the police. “My son called me on February 25 to come to the cell. I went with a man and the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) was with us. He told us that on the 24th, Wale (Tessy’s husband) and some boys took him to Marina sea side, stripped him naked and tied his hands and legs. He said they flogged him with wire and he sustained injuries which I saw on his body. He told me that they brought out a gun and said they will kill him, throw him inside the lagoon and said they will tell everyone that he ran away, adding that nobody can question them. With this threat, my son told me that he had to say he sold the phone.

“He was there after brought to the church and later handed over to the police.  I was not allowed to talk to him, he was just looking at me, and he could not talk. I later discovered that the man is a cultist, so I’m being careful the way I move around on Lagos Island. How would my son have sold the phone within the few minutes he was sent on the errand and where would he have sold it, since his journey did not pass Lagos Island? My son is a musician, he has gathered three songs and we were planning to produce the songs. I had plans to set up a studio for him, but they have truncated his vision.

“When I got back home on the 25th, Isaiah was accusing me that why was I going round to say they used gun to threaten my son, whereas, I was coming from the cell, which means the IPO must have either told him, and that depicts that there is a matter going on underground involving Wale, Isaiah and the police, they are on good terms. When I was told that my son was dead, I had partial stroke, and I was taken to the general hospital, I was told that I was just laughing when I was told of the incident.

“What police is claiming is that they are not the one that killed my son, but that my son killed himself. I know all the cells are built to standard. I was in the cell, it is built with bricks, the wall is high and it is an open roof such that sun and rain will beat the inmates. My son was the only one in the cell, how could he tie and hang himself up, without climbing anything, this shows the police are lying.

“My son has no mind to do such, if he sees fight, he will leave the scene, I have never heard nor see him fighting. If I was told that he died because he was tortured, I would have no problem but that my son killed himself is a lie.

“How come nobody has been arrested since the phone was found? How come the IPO heard all that my son said and all those involved can still walk freely on the street?

“It is not that I cannot forget the death of my son, but there is no sense of remorse from those that killed my son. Nobody was arrested. The IPO in Panti Police Station in Yaba, called me to ask me what I want, when she discovered that I got a lawyer to fight my case. I was asked if I want a car or tricycle in order not to make it a court case. The police are insisting that they are not the one that killed my son, but I am insisting that they have a hand in the death of my son,” he said.

  • Son’s death casts pall on Stella Oduah’s birthday

Son’s death casts pall on Stella Oduah’s birthday

Former Aviation Minister, Princess Stella Oduah, clocked 54 on Thursday. In times past, this would have been cause for massive celebration. Courses would have been prepared, costly wines imported, musicians booked for performances and expensive attires ordered. But this year, it was as quiet as a sermon session in the home of the Anambra senator whose tenure as a minister in former President Goodluck Jonathan’s government was enmeshed in controversy.

Since the senator lost her son, Master Maxwell Toritseju Chinedu Otoromi, last August, the usually rambunctious senator has had a change of demeanour. Gone are the vivacity, boisterousness and self-assuredness of the old times. These days, she looks wan as she wears her grief on her sleeves.

  • Mother, hospital trade words over son’s death

Mother, hospital trade words over son’s death

•Removal of his body sparks row

Seeing my son die in my presence was an awful experience. I screamed for help but I got no response. My son convulsed in my eyes; I saw him breathe his last. I watched helplessly as he writhed in pains.”

These were the words of Mrs Temiloluwa Adewunmi, whose son, Oluwamurewa, died last Saturday at Ayodele Hospital in Fagba, Lagos.

The 27-year-old trader said her son was placed on oxygen immediately he got to the hospital, adding that he died after power outage. Since then, she said, the hospital has refused to release his body.

Narrating her ordeal, she said her six-month-old boy started running temperature sometime last week and was taken to Ifako General Hospital.

“When we got to the general hospital last Wednesday, we were told he should be admitted but there was no bed space. I bought the drug prescribed by the physician and my son’s temperature returned to normal.

“I was so shocked on Saturday morning when his temperature became high again. As my husband and I wanted to take him back to the general hospital, there was traffic gridlock so we resorted to Ayodele Hospital since it was in our neighbourhood,” she said.

Mrs. Adewunmi said when they got to the hospital, they were asked to pay N5,000 for card, adding: “My husband paid N2,000 and excused himself to use the Automated Teller Machine (ATM). Immediately my son was attended to. He was placed on drip and oxygen. Even when the doctor asked if he was convulsing, I told him he has never convulsed. Within few minutes, my son began to sweat and I felt he was getting better. The doctors also assured me he was going to be fine.

“As I sat beside him on his sick bed, there was power outage and I noticed the oxygen stopped moving. I ran out of the room to call for help but nobody answered me. I even went to knock the doctor’s door but no one was there. The nurses said they were going to put on the generator but it came on after 30 minutes. I removed the hose passed through his nose to aid breathing to allow breeze blow him. Before I removed it, he had already stretched his arms, I didn’t know he was about to leave me.

“It was later doctors came in, one of them placed his hands on my son’s chest but he was no more. I realised the owner of the hospital was just describing where the heart was to the doctor attending to my son. Before they put on the generator, it was my phone’s light I used to see how my son was doing.

“I have never attended the hospital before, even when I was pregnant, my friends advised me not to go there”, she said.

Mrs Adewunmi said when the family went to collect her son’s remains on Sunday, the hospital allegedly refused and demanded N40,000 before the body could be removed.

The bereaved mother said: “When we got there, I was shocked to see my son’s body beside the hospital’s dust bin. Even when my husband shouted that his son be given to him, the hospital management called police officers from Oko-Oba division to take him away. It is unfair. I have not been able to sleep. I see my son wherever I go. I want to bury him. I just got married last year and he is my first child. At three months, Murewa already had two set of tooth. He was a cute gentle boy. Whenever I took him to the market, he understood I was busy. He never disturbed me. I didn’t give him any home medication. I was even meant to use the money I had on me to stock my shop but my son is priority. Immediately I noticed his temperature, I went to the general hospital where I spent almost the whole day. I need my son’s body.”

Her husband, a veterinary doctor, she said, hasn’t been himself since the incident.

“I miss my baby, my world and my priority”, she said.

The hospital’s administration manager, George Abayomi, said the baby was brought in a terrible condition, adding that immediately light went off, the generator came on.

“We have two standby generators in our premises; why should it take us 30 minutes to put on the generator. His parents brought him at the last minute. He died as a result of anaemia heart failure,” he said.

Asked why Mr Olabode Adewunmi was detained, he said: “When the father got aware of his son’s death, he began to destroy the hospital property and he couldn’t be restrained. He promised to burn down the hospital. After he left, he returned around 12:20am with a gallon of petrol which he sprinkled in the reception, it was when we couldn’t control him that we invited police officers from Oko-Oba division.

“He came this morning (yesterday) around 9am to take his son’s body but we told him he had an outstanding balance to pay. He has to pay the bill of the services rendered. At times, in such cases, we give discount but they are insisting on not paying. He even said if we want to eat the body, we should. The body was taken to a morgue in Ikeja on Sunday and we paid N16,000.”

Stanley Nwanali, a doctor with the hospital, said the patient’s file showed that he was brought in almost in “coma, pale and with an enlarged liver”.

The Lagos State Public Advice Centre (PAC) has intervened in the matter, which has been referred to Ministry of Health and Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) for investigation.

Father cries out for justice over son’s death

A FATHER is crying out for justice over the killing of his son.
