Postecoglou spent two seasons at Tottenham after joining from Celtic in June 2023.

Spurs made a bright start in the Australian’s first season in charge, playing an attack-minded and entertaining style of football led to both high-scoring wins and losses.

  • No action for Leon Balogun as Brighton hammers Spurs 3-0

It was a sit and watch setting for Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun as Brighton and Hove Albion beat visiting Spurs 3-0 on Saturday.

The Nigeria international has not seen action in five straight Brighton matches including the 3-1 loss to Aston Villa in the league cup.

The former Werder Bremen ace who joined Brighton just before the last World cup in Russia has only managed eight appearances for the side and was an unused substitute on Saturday as teammate and French import Neal Maupay opened scoring for Brighton in the 3rd minute of the match while Aaron Cornolly scored brace to shoot the tie beyond Spurs.

Balogun who was part of the Super Eagles squad to both the last world cup and the last Nations cup in Egypt played combined seven matches in both competitions in which the Eagles crashed out in the group stage and finished in the third place respectively.

Brighton players celebrate with Aaron Cornolly after his brace Saturday

He has however been left out of the Eagles squad for this month’s friendly against Brazil in Singapore.  His exclusion may not be unconnected with his lack of playing time in his club. The 31 year old appears to be suffering the same fate with compatriot and Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho who has continued to be on the sidelines, managing in a few cases to have single digit playing time at the King Power Stadium.

Interestingly the last time Brighton scored more than goal in a league match dates back to December 2018 against Crystal Palace.

  • Winks’ header snatches dramatic win for Spurs

Tottenham supporters filed out of Craven Cottage singing a familiar song after one of their own came to the rescue.

This time, however, Harry Winks was the name on their lips, the last-gasp goal hero who stepped forward in the absence of Harry Kane.

In doing so, Winks not only kept Spurs clear of the chasing pack but spared the blushes of Fernando Llorente who came in to replace Kane and opened the scoring, in his own net.

Llorente gave Fulham the lead and for long periods Mauricio Pochettino’s team struggled to find a way past the leakiest defence in the Premier League.

Dele Alli hauled them level, early in the second half but then appeared to pull a hamstring and limped off to extend the serious striker crisis.

Just as it seemed as though Fulham would take a valuable point for their fight against relegation, Winks appeared at the back post to head in a deep cross by Georges-Kevin N’Koudou.

It makes it 11 wins from 13 Premier League away games for Pochettino’s men.

Llorente was starting for only the second time in the Premier League game in 18 months as a Tottenham player.

On his first start, at Swansea, little more than 12 months ago, he scored the first in a 2-0 win.

Beyond that, his contribution to the cause has been limited mainly to late cameo appearances when all else has failed and FA Cup hat-tricks against Rochdale and Tranmere.

Suddenly, here he was, thrown into the thick of it, handed the responsibility of leading the line and keeping the season ticking over in a month when the 33-year-old Basque had been plotting a return to Spain.

Llorente was back to defend a corner when he lost track of the flight of the ball as it was whipped across by Jean Michael Seri and could not adjust his feet as it crashed against the inside of his right knee and flashed past Hugo Lloris.

The goal contained an element of good fortune but Fulham deserved their lead having played with such speed and direct threat on the break.

Five minutes earlier, Lloris made a reflex save to deny Ryan Babel a goal on his debut after signing from Besiktas eight years after leaving Liverpool.

Babel, operating wide on the Fulham left, caused Spurs problems in the first half.

He lashed another effort wide from a long pass from Tim Ream, headed over from a terrific cross by Cyrus Christie and was foiled by a last-ditch block by Jan Vertonghen.

Babel was also involved as Aleksandar Mitrovic had a goal ruled out before half-time. His cross from left to right found Andre Schurrle who unleashed a sweet volley which Lloris could only parry.

Mitrovic nodded the rebound into the net but he was offside when Schurrle shot and the flag was up.

Tottenham were fortunate to reach the interval at only one goal down.

  • Spurs may again loan out Dele Alli

Spurs may again loan out Dele Alli

Nigeria-born midfielder Dele Alli may again be sent out on loan by Tottenham Hotspur when the new EPL season kicks off next month.

The former MK Dons midfielder joined the EPL side during the January transfer window, but was loaned back to the League One side and helped secure promotion for them. He may again play elsewhere as he is yet to feature in any pre-season game for Spurs.

Tottenham was involved in different friendly games on Saturday with the main team against Reading, a Tottenham selected face Peterborough with lots of youngsters involved, but the highly-rated 19-year-old midfielder was not involved in any and was instead in the stand to watch MK Dons play a friendly against Buckingham Athletic which Dons won 12-0.

There was no reported issue of injury about the player recently. MK Dons and other teams have shown interest in having him on loan.

Musa hints at January move to Spurs

Nigeria striker Ahmed Musa has remained calm in the wake of recent reports linking him to Barclays Premier League club, Tottenham Hotspur, but hints at a possible January move.

Spurs have been tracking Musa since 2011 and are still showing interest in the 22-year-old, who has made it clear he is “comfortable” at CSKA Moscow despite harbouring the ambitions of playing in the English top flight in the future.

The CSKA Moscow man, who played in the 2-2 draw in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League match against English champions, Manchester City, said a January transfer could happen.

But he stated that the decision of leaving CSKA Moscow is not one he will make, as he is focused on helping his Russian club win trophies.

“Playing in the (English) Premier League someday has always been my wish. I’m aware that my manager has been discussing with some premiership clubs. Maybe in January something will happen, or maybe not but I’m not in a hurry at all.

“I’m happy and very comfortable with where I am at the moment. If the right club comes and my manager and my club are happy with the deal then maybe something will happen but for now my focus is on doing well for CSKA Moscow and nothing else,” Musa said to supersport.com.

Musa has scored more than 20 goals for CSKA since joining the Moscow club two years ago.

Tottenham gets English teacher for Yahaya

The agent of Nigeria youth international Musa Yahaya has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have hired an English teacher for his client in order for him to communicate better with his teammates.

The attacking midfielder has been practicing with the Spurs Development squad since July.

It was noticed at the start of the exercise that he barely spoke the English language, and could not understand basic instructions being passed by the coaches.

”Tottenham Hotspur have hired an English teacher for Musa Yahaya. The lady speaks Hausa and English,so it’s easy for Musa to understand what is being taught. She comes three times a week to tutor him,” agent Babawo Mohammed told SL10.ng.

”Before now, he spoke only Hausa and little Nigerian pidgin English, but he has improved now.During training, he wasn’t really understanding what they were telling him to do.”

Babawo Mohammed, who handles the affairs of several Nigerian youth internationals, has also disclosed that the White Hart Lane outfit have adequately met all the needs of the ex Golden Eaglets star.

”On the pitch, they are highly impressed with his performance. He is staying in their club house and they take care of his feeding.A vehicle picks him from the club house and takes him to training every day” he added.

Tottenham Hotspur will continue to watch Musa Yahaya at close quarters until he becomes eligible to be granted a work permit.

The sixteen year old has cancelled the agreement he had with Celta Vigo, which had stipulated that his sporting rights will remain on their books until he clocks 18.
