  • Collins: Spurs’ defeat will drive young players on

JOHN Collins believes that Celtic’s final pre-season encounter with Tottenham Hotspur was a worthwhile experience for all involved – despite the result.

The Bhoys were defeated 6-1 by the London side in the Hoops’ final pre-season tie, held at Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium.

It was a homecoming for Finnish striker Teemu Pukkil, who captained a side that featured a mix of youth and experience, with Efe Ambrose lining up alongside a host of young Celtic players.

Reflecting on the defeat, Collins insists that the game will help with the long-term development of the young Hoops.

Speaking to Celtic TV, he said: “We had many 18-year-olds or under 18 players that have gone on a path that’s exposed them to a Premier League select side that has quality throughout.

“They had strength, power and technique. There’s a new manager in the other dugout and they were desperate to impress him before the new season.

“It wasn’t much fun for the boys losing to such a heavy defeat but I think it should drive them on, make them work on the training pitch, where they will work to improve every aspect of their game to get to that standard.

“It’s massive jump from playing Scottish youth football to playing an English Premier League team.

“There were patches of play in the first half where we passed it and controlled it, but as the game went on we tired, while they brought out a whole new team at half time, full of experience.

“But what I like is that the kids never gave up. They kept giving it everything and chasing it but it’s not easy when you are so many goals behind.

“But it’s a valuable lesson and that’s the standard they want to get to, so you come away thinking about what you can learn – it’s about their first touch, their speed of play and movement.”

Fenerbahce deny Emenike’s move to Chelsea, Spurs

Going by the words of Fenerbahce President, Aziz Yildirim, reports linking Emmanuel Emenike with a plethora of teams in England and Juventus in Italy are paper – talk.

The leadership of the Yellow Canaries has stated that the club have not received any bid from interested suitors that are hoping to acquire the Nigeria international.

“Emenike nor another player’s departure from the club is not in question. We have not received a formal letter for any player. Please let’s be more careful in this regard,” Aziz Yildirim told reporters.

A move to Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Manchester City and Chelsea has been mooted this summer, with the Londoners said to be leading the race for the 27 – year – old’s signature.

The Super Eagles forward still has a deal with Fenerbahce till the summer of 2017.

  • Dirk Kuyt: ‘Defeat in 2010 final spurs us on’

Netherlands midfielder Dirk Kuyt has admitted that his side’s loss in the World Cup final in 2010 is providing motivation for the team in this year’s tournament.

The Oranje fell to a 1-0 defeat to Spain in South Africa four years ago, but responded to reach the semi-finals in Brazil where they will face Argentina.

“Argentina are a world-class team,” he told FIFA.com, “and they deserve to be in the last four. But we want to measure ourselves against the best, and not only measure – but win. That’s why we’re here.

“The semi-finals are fantastic but we know what it feels like to lose a World Cup, and we would love to win [the Trophy]. That’s our goal.”

Louis van Gaal’s side face Argentina in Sao Paulo on Wednesday.

  • Spurs, Everton chase Emenike

    Spurs, Everton chase Emenike

Tottenham and Everton are reportedly interested in securing the services of Fenerbahce striker Emmanuel Emenike, according to reports in Turkey.

Turkish website Fanatik reports that the player would cost around £10million (N2.8bn) although Fener would ideally not sell their star striker.

Emenike only signed for Fenerbahce last summer in a strange transfer saga which saw him arrested for match-fixing at one point.

He actually signed for Fenerbahce back in 2011 but was immediately sold in the same transfer window to Spartak Moscow because of the allegations, before Fener decided to bring him back two years later.

And his first season with the Turkish side saw him net 11 times and his physicality is deemed perfect for the Premier League.

Spurs are in the market for a striker after Roberto Soldado’s nightmare debut season in England which left them with just the inconsistent Emmanuel Adebayor and inexperienced Harry Kane at their disposal.

Everton are in an even more dire need of a centre forward as their first choice striker from last season was Romelu Lukaku, who returned to his parent club Chelsea.

Emenike is similarly strong like Lukaku and would be ideal for holding the ball up and allow Everton’s midfielders to play off him, just like Lukaku did so well last term.
