Three spectators died and more than 70 others were injured after falling from the upper stand of a stadium, following MC Alger’s win in the Algerian top-flight league for the second season in a row, the Algerian ministry of health said

“The Beni Messous University Hospital received 38 injured people, while three deaths were recorded,” the Algerian ministry of health said on Sunday  in a statement via Facebook, adding: “Ben Aknoun Hospital also received 27 injured people, while Bab El Oued Hospital received 16.”

“It is with great sadness and sorrow and with hearts that we received the news of our supporter Younes Amguzzi, who passed away after falling from the upper stands,” MC Alger said earlier in an Instagram post.

The club has yet to comment on the additional fatalities.

Local media reports said the spectators fell after a fence in the upper stand broke, with El Heddaf TV’s Facebook page posting a video showing part of a railing collapsed onto the lower tier.

The injured spectators were rushed to hospital, where MC Alger players, staff and administrators also went to donate blood as the trophy presentation ceremony was postponed, the reports added.

During the court session, the judge, in a light-hearted tone, advised the defendants to be guided and avoid similar issues in future.

Oyo State Attorney-General, Abiodun Aikomo, addressing the media after the court session, described the incident that led to the death of many children as unfortunate.

Aikomo argued that in law, when a death occurred and the circumstances were not natural, the law would take its course.

Oyo Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice in Oyo State Abiodun Aikomo has justified the decision to file a fresh charge against Olori Naomi Silekunola, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat and Abdulahi Fasasi.

He said the government is concerned about justice and hope for victims of the incident by pressing the fresh 18 count charges against the defendants.

Before the new charge, the three individuals are facing trial at a Chief Magistrate Court, Iyaganku over their alleged involvement in an event that resulted in the death of 35 victims, mostly children.

The ill-fated Ibadan Children Funfair held at the Islamic High School, Bashorun Ibadan on December 18, 2024.

Olori Naomi is the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife and runs Wing Foundation, an NGO. Hazmat is the proprietor of an Ibadan based radio station, Agidigbo FM while Fasasi is the Principal, Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.

The trio was on Monday granted bail by an Oyo State High Court, Ring Road, Ibadan after spending 20days at the Agodi Correctional Centre on the order of the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olabisi Ogunkanmi.

Amidst calls for leniency for the three defendants, Governor Seyi Makinde different fora reiterated that those involved, no matter how highly placed, must face trial.

The Governor said many of those reaching out to him were using similar stampede incident in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as examples where nobody is facing trial adding that, even if nobody is held accountable everywhere else, he will ensure that the rule of law is duly followed in Oyo state.

The Governor had added that he was not against the court granting the suspect bail, saying that is to the discretion of the court.

The Nation reports that, in fulfilling the threat, the state government slammed a fresh suit on the trio

The 18 count suit with Charge number: I/05C/2025 is: the State government versus Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat and Fasasi Abdulahi Babatunde. It was filed at the State High Court on Friday, January 10th, 2025.

The 18 count charges borders on: conspiracy to commit a felony to wit: murder, manslaughter, conspiracy to commit an offence to wit: criminal negligence, and criminal negligence.

The offences were said to be contrary to and punishable under section 324 of the criminal code, CAP 38, vol II Law of Oyo state, 2000.

Speaking when contacted, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice said the defendants have been served the new suit and a date will soon be fixed.

Aikomo said the charges had been served on the defendants, adding that the government is giving the defendants the opportunity to have a date in the court to possibly clear their name or otherwise with their involvement in the incident.

Aikomo said “There is a afresh charge against them. I don’t know if it has been assigned, that’s an administrative duty of the judiciary. I know it has been served on the defendants and we have a date for it. Everybody will hear about it.

“When you say is there still hope, what are you expecting? We are not the court, we are not suppose to pass judgement on them, we are supposed to give them an opportunity to have a date in court, and that is what we have done.

“So, we have filed a charge, we have a burden to prove the case, if it has merit, they defend it, if they think it doesn’t have merit, they can even file a no case. Because we want to ensure hope and justice for the victims, that is why we are taking this measure.”

Catholic Church holds remembrance mass for victims of Abuja stampede

    …it’s unfortunate, says Kaigama

The Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja has held a remembrance mass for the ten individuals who lost their lives during the palliative sharing on 21 December 2024, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama.

Recall that during last year’s yuletide period, Nigeria experienced three major stampedes due to palliative sharing; one occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, claiming the lives of 35 children, another took place in Okija, Anambra State, resulting in 22 casualties, and the third at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Abuja, where 10 lives were lost.

While delivering his homily during the Mass on Sunday, the Archbishop of Abuja, Most Reverend Ignatius Kaigama, stated that the Mass was to invoke the comfort and consolation of the Lord upon the Church, the parish, and the victims of the accident on 21 December.

Kaigama said: “In the course of your magnanimous gesture to provide food and other basic needs to the poor and hungry, as you have always done successfully for decades, in line with the Catholic tradition of performing corporal works of mercy, your inspiration to serve the poor and vulnerable comes from St. Vincent de Paul, who initiated your society in 1833, dedicated to caring for the poor and needy admirably.

“No wonder, every Sunday at church entrances in many parishes, your members stand with their iron boxes, clinging to them to draw attention, saying, Help the poor! Help the poor! This aligns with the Church’s concern for the poor, which led Pope Francis to declare the World Day of the Poor. There is a special day dedicated to the poor by the Pope in the name of the Church.

“However, the distribution at Holy Trinity Metropolitan in 2024 witnessed an unprecedented turnout of about 5,000 needy and vulnerable individuals, certainly due to the heightened economic hardship affecting many families in the country. It was not because we were negligent that they came.

“It was because they were hungry that they came. And their hunger is not the fault of the Catholic Church. If you are looking for a culprit, please cast your eyes elsewhere.

“Certainly not the Catholic Church. The large crowd outside the church premises created pressure and panic. This led to a struggle as individuals scrambled to gain entry through the church gate, resulting in fatalities and injuries.

“No one, I repeat, no one should be allowed to die a needless death simply struggling for what to eat. Is it not shameful that we shall say in the future and history that people died here merely struggling for what to eat? Is it not a shame for the nation? And when the international community hears about it, they also wonder what is happening to Nigeria, despite our immense human and natural resources. When the sad incident occurred, immediate actions were taken by the Church.”

The clergyman noted that the Catholic Church is the world’s largest non-government provider of healthcare services, with over 100,000 charity and healthcare centres, including hospitals and dispensaries, care homes for people with leprosy, homes for the elderly or chronically ill, and facilities for people with disabilities, among others.

He said: “I want us to know that the Catholic Church cares, and the Catholic Church cares for the poor. To underscore the importance of this prayer event, I had to cancel the Mass today, which I had scheduled to hold with the internally displaced persons at their camp in St. Kevin’s Pastoral Area, Caboosa, to be here with you to pray.”

While explaining that the tragedy provides an opportunity to learn lessons, he said the unexpected incident underscores the need for enhanced crowd control measures. “We are learning that there must be attempts to pre-register people to prevent a similar occurrence,” he added.

Kaigama further emphasised the need for sensitisation on orderly conduct before and during distributions so that organisers can minimise anxiety and panic.

He said: “We are certainly learning, but remember, we have done this for many, many years without any incident of this nature. However, that it has happened means that it can happen again, so we must take adequate proactive measures to ensure that this does not occur again.

“While we mourn the loss of lives, we remain steadfast in our commitment to serve the poor and vulnerable. There are many, there are millions in this country, and we are committed to serving them to the best of our abilities. We will work to ensure that such incidents are avoided in the future.”

He, however, appreciated members of St. Vincent de Paul, who have championed the cause of the poor over the years.

“And I do not hesitate to declare the parish priest of Holy Trinity, Maitama, Fr. Moses Jimbilee, the President of St. Vincent de Paul of Maitama Parish, Ms. Julia Omwen Melia, and all the members of St. Vincent de Paul in Abuja as our Heroes and Heroines of 2024,” he added.

He urged the government to do all that is possible to ensure that no one dies of hunger or other artificial causes.

Kaigama also called on the government to learn to use available resources without corruption to save the lives of its citizens.

The Oyo State government has initiated a fresh suit against a former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Olori Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the proprietor of an Ibadan-based radio station, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, and the Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, Mr. Abdulahi Fasasi.

The 18-count suit with charge number: I/05C/2025 is: the State government versus Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat and Fasasi Abdullahi Babatunde.

The suit was filed at the State High Court on Friday, 10th January 2025.

The 18-count charges relate to: conspiracy to commit a felony, namely murder; manslaughter; conspiracy to commit an offence, criminal negligence; and criminal negligence.

The offences are said to be contrary to and punishable under section 324 of the Criminal Code, CAP 38, Vol II Law of Oyo State, 2000.

In the charge sheet sighted by The Nation, the prosecution revealed the names and details of 14 of the reported 35 victims of the incident.

The names on the charge sheet include: Musiliu Sofiyah, ‘f’, 8 years; Lekan Salami, ‘m’, 7 years; Feyikemi Salam, ‘f’, 1 and a half years; Olaniyan Joshua, ‘m’, 1 and a half years; and Laeef Muisi, ‘m’, 8 years.

The charge also states that the suspects “did conspire together to commit a felony, namely criminal negligence, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 517 of the Criminal Code, CAP 38, Vol II, Law of Oyo State, 2000.

“Did negligently omit to provide adequate security, crowd control mechanisms, and medical facilities to prevent a stampede at a children’s funfair programme organised by you, and your negligent omission resulted in the death of one Musiliu Sofiat, ‘f’, aged 8 years, and 34 other children, thereby committing an offence contrary to section 308 and punishable under section 344 of the Criminal Code, CAP 38, Vol II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.”

Two different courts in Ibadan will also be hearing matters related to the trio on Monday.

While an Oyo State High Court will be ruling on the bail application of the trio before it, a Chief Magistrate’s Court will be hearing the case after it adjourned last year and ordered the trio to be kept at the Agodi Correctional Centre.

The Nation reports that Justice K. B Olawoyin, presiding over Court 8, Oyo State High Court, Ring Road, Ibadan, also fixed Monday, 13th January 2025, to deliver his ruling on the bail application filed by Olori Naomi Silekunola, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat and Abdulahi Fasasi.

Olori Naomi is the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife and runs Wings Foundation, an NGO. Hamzat is the proprietor of an Ibadan-based radio station, Agidigbo FM, while Fasasi is the Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.

The trio are facing trial following the deaths of 35 children as a result of a stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.

The event was organised by Naomi’s Wings Foundation, while Oriyomi Hamzat’s radio station, Agidigbo FM, promoted the event extensively.

Additionally, Chief Magistrate Mrs. Olabisi Ogunkanmi, presiding over Chief Magistrate Court 1, Iyaganku, Ibadan, had on 24th December 2025, ordered the trio to be remanded at the Agodi Correctional facility pending advice from the Department of Public Prosecution of the Oyo State Ministry of Justice.

Silekunola, Oriyomi, and Fasasi are facing trial on a four-count charge relating to conspiracy, acceleration of death, negligent acts causing harm, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities.

The case with charge number C/2024 is: Commissioner of Police versus Naomi Silekunola, ‘f’, 31 years; Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, ‘m’, 51 years; and Fasasi Abdullahi Babatunde, ‘m’, 56 years.

At the time of this report, it could not be confirmed if the DPP’s advice had been approved and issued to the police for onward transmission to the Chief Magistrate, but it was gathered that the new 18-count criminal charge filed against the trio by the state government may have derived from the advice.

Stampede: Lagos urges compliance to safety measures

Lagos State has warned event managers to comply with safety measures during Yuletide and beyond.

The government said it is to prevent accidents in public places, and urged residents to prioritise safety always.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, during a news conference with Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Relations, said the move became necessary following the stampede in some parts of the country, as well as a reported stage collapse at a beach event on Victoria Island.

Omotoso called on event organisers to make preparation for crowd control to forestall stampedes.

He stressed that henceforth, individuals, religious and corporate bodies that wish to hold event must register with Lagos State Safety Commission or face the full wrath of the law.

He said: “We are here on behalf of the governor to tell Lagosians that he feels concerned about the report of stampede in some parts of the country, and will not want such happening in Lagos. In Lagos State, we have adequate preparations for every big event and we do so every year, we used to have Greater Lagos Fiesta, this year, we added Boat Regatta and others.

“Unfortunately, we got report of a stage collapse at Sol Beach on Victoria Island. Fortunately, nobody died. And this has made us to say we do not want the matter to slide.

“To prevent a recurrence, individuals or groups that intend to hold an event or distribute items to large gatherings are advised to seek clearance from the Safety Commission.”

Omotoso maintained that the commission has partnered with security agencies to control crowd, and will connect individuals and groups to the appropriate agencies for proper event management.

“Any charity act should not turn tragic, so to those who feel they can just gather a crowd and begin distribution of items and huge crowd beefs up and tragic incidents happen, the person will have him or herself to blame,” he added

His counterpart, Gbenga Oyerinde, urged residents to monitor happenings in their environment. He enjoined them to call the toll free 767 and 112 in case of emergency.

Director-General of the Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, noted that government has been conscious of the safety of residents, as demonstrated during COVID-19.

Mojola, who identified rushing, negligence, complacency and frustration as reasons for stampede, urged event planners to follow safety rules, while anyone who wishes to hold charity for over 250 must engage the agency through www.lasgsafetyreg.com.

  • Obi’s ‘systemic failures’ for stampede deaths uncharitable, says Omokri

Obi’s ‘systemic failures’ for stampede deaths uncharitable, says Omokri

A former presidential aide, Mr Reno Omokri, has urged the former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, not to politicise the recent fatal stampedes in some parts of the country, saying doing so amounted to politicising the people’s tragedy.

About 39 persons were feared dead in Okija, Anambra State and Maitama in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, on Saturday following stampedes at food-sharing events to usher in the Xmas festivities. Both incidents came on the heels of an earlier disaster in Ibadan, during which 35 children died.

Obi, in a tweet on his X handle last week, condemned the scores of children’s deaths in Ibadan during the pre-Xmas fair as a reflection of the nation’s “systemic failure”.

“The devastating news of innocent children reportedly trampled to death during a Christmas celebration in Ibadan is both heart-wrenching and a stark reflection of the systemic failures that plague our nation today,” he said.

He said the tragedy called for deep reflection and decisive actions by leaders to prioritise policies that address poverty, inequality, and equitable resource access while ensuring the highest safety standards for public events, especially those involving children.

However, Omokri reacted on his X handle by accusing Obi of being insensitive to the victims’ plight. He said rather than seeking to reap political benefits from the tragedy, the Labour Party candidate should have empathised with the people who lost their loved ones.

“One would have expected Mr Peter Obi to have condoled with the families and moved on,” he said.

The former presidential aide said the Labour Party’s erstwhile flagbearer’s attempt to blame the federal government for the stampede was hypocritical because the occurrence was a global phenomenon, pointing out that it occurred recently in the US, South Korea, Israel and multiple European countries.

Besides, he recalled that under Obi’s watch as governor of Anambra State, a similar event happened on November 3, 2013, during which 28 persons died. “Funny enough, Peter Obi himself was at the scene of the incident and was accused by survivors of triggering the stampede,” Omokri stated.

He said, “It is hypocritical for a man under whom these events occurred to now use the Ibadan tragedy to stigmatise the Tinubu administration. Genuine opposition politics involves providing alternative solutions to issues. It is an abuse of the idea of opposition to lazily sit and wait for tragedies to occur and then seek to profit from them. That is wickedness, not politics.”

Omokri queried the moral basis of Obi’s persistent criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, pointing out that the former Labour Party’s presidential candidate underperformed during his time as Anambra State governor.

He said, “This is sad coming from a man under who, as Governor of Anambra State, poverty almost doubled, as revealed by his immediate successor, Mr Willie Obiano, and Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

“Before Peter Obi took over as Governor of Anambra, poverty in that state was 41.4%. However, under Mr. Obi, it grew to 53.7%, partly because Peter Obi refused to use the state’s allocations to build infrastructure.

“In his eight years as Governor, Mr. Obi did not initiate, start, complete, or commission even one nursery, primary, secondary school, or university.”

Shortly after Omokri’s severe criticism, Obi deleted his tweet, and yesterday he made another tweet, adjusting his position on the stampedes.

Incidentally, on Saturday there was stampede in Okija, a prominent town in Obi’s home state, during which some people also died. Another occurred in Maitama, Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Reacting to these tragedies, the former aide to President Goodluck Jonathan commiserated with the victims. He called on state governments to learn lessons from the frequent events and implement better crowd control mechanisms.

    Obi: my position on stampedes

In his new tweet, Obi said: ”I am deeply saddened and distressed by the tragic loss of lives in desperate searches for food. A few days ago, about 35 people, mostly children, lost their lives in a stampede at a Christmas Funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State.

“This morning, reports emerged of at least 10 people losing their lives in Abuja while scrambling for palliatives, with many others injured.

“Now, I just heard that about 19 more lives were lost in another stampede in Okija, Anambra State, as people struggled to receive food items.

“While I will not cast blame, but instead appreciate the organizers of these respective events for their kind gestures in providing palliatives and support to society, especially the poor, these tragedies reflect the systemic failures that plague our society.

“The desperate quest for survival in these harsh economic times has driven our people to extremes in their search for food, often at the cost of their lives.

“How do we explain that in a nation blessed with abundant resources, our people are dying of hunger in such numbers? How is it possible that we cannot feed our citizens despite the vast, fertile lands our nation is endowed with? My heart bleeds.”

“One can only imagine the pain their families are enduring at this moment. My heart goes out to them. I sincerely commiserate with all the affected families and the good people of Oyo, Anambra, and the FCT over these tragic incidents. May God grant them, and all of us, the strength to bear these painful losses.

“May God Almighty grant the departed souls eternal rest, and may the injured recover swiftly.”

Stampede: Ondo warns event organisers, issues crowd control directives

Ondo state government has issued series of directives aimed at regulating public gatherings and ensuring the protection of lives and property during events.

The directives was in response to tragedies that occurred in various parts of the country when almost 100 persons have been killed during stampede.

Ondo Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, issued the directives based on powers vested in the Attorney General under Section 195 of the Constitution of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), Sections 62 and 95 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Ondo State 2015, and Sections 2 and 4 of the Nigeria Police Act 2020.

Ajulo said the series of directives outlined improved crowd control measures and documented in Directive No. 01-1224.

He said the guidelines prioritized public safety even as it respected citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly.

The Attorney-General warned that any violations of the directives might result to legal action against the organizers or participants.

Dr. Ajulo explained that the directives also called for enhanced collaboration between event organizers, law enforcement agencies, and local government authorities.

He said the measures were designed to protect lives and property and urged ull compliance from all parties involved.

“These crowd control measures are a testament to Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to fostering a secure environment for public gatherings in Ondo State. Stakeholders are advised to familiarize themselves with the directives to avoid legal repercussions and contribute to a safer society,” Ajulo concluded.

The directives stressed the importance of proactive measures, such as communication protocols, venue accessibility, use of drones, CCTV, availability of security personnel amongst others.
