StarTimes captures spectacles as underdogs rock Club World Cup

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, unfolding across the United States, has delivered an electrifying Round of 16—filled with shock exits, breakout stars, and underdog triumphs.

For Nigerian viewers, StarTimes has been the window to every goal, upset, and celebration, bringing global football drama directly into homes and onto mobile screens.

Two major football powerhouses, Manchester City and Inter Milan, suffered stunning eliminations. Manchester City were ousted 4–3 in extra time by Saudi Arabian champions Al Hilal in Orlando.

The Saudi team twice came from behind before sealing the win with a 112th -minute strike by Marcos Leonardo, while goalkeeper Yassine Bounou delivered a heroic performance to frustrate the European side.

In another upset, Brazilian club Fluminense beat Inter Milan 2–0, thanks to a tactically disciplined performance. Veteran defender Thiago Silva, at 40, led a compact backline, and 44-year-old goalkeeper Fábio kept a clean sheet, securing Fluminense’s place in the quarter-finals.

These results aren’t just surprising—they reflect a broader shift in football’s global landscape.

One key reason is the tournament’s expanded format, which now includes 32 teams, offering more clubs the chance to prove themselves on the world stage. This change has added depth and unpredictability to the competition.

Additionally, South American and Saudi Arabian clubs have entered the tournament in mid-season and a recent end-of-the-season form respectively, arriving sharper and fitter than many European sides who are just restarting after a break. This physical advantage has been telling.

Tactical innovation has also played a major role. Many so-called underdogs have executed smart, reactive game plans—particularly focusing on tight defense and swift counter-attacks.

But above all, it’s the resilience and mental toughness of these teams—adapting to new environments, playing with heart, and believing they belong—that has turned potential into results.

Elsewhere in the Round of 16, Bayern Munich beat Flamengo 4–2 with a brace from Harry Kane. Paris Saint-Germain dominated Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, winning 4–0. Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Palmeiras, and Real Madrid have also advanced, setting the stage for blockbuster quarter-final matchups. Throughout the tournament, StarTimes Nigeria has ensured fans don’t miss a moment, with live broadcasts on its decoders and seamless mobile streaming via the StarTimes ON app.

The Chinese technology company, through its subsidiary, StarTimes Solar, said by taking power demand off the national grid and switching to clean alternatives source like solar, it is helping to close the energy gap, especially in rural communities.

According to the World Bank, the country has the world’s largest absolute electricity access deficit, with 45 per cent of the population (90 million) lacking access to the national electricity grid, a development that has critically affected the overall development of the nation’s economy.

Speaking in an interview in Lagos on the side of ongoing Nigeria Energy Exhibition at Landmark Centre, National Sales Director at StarTimes Solar, Dele Ameh, said the company company’s suit of solar power solutions are not only cost-effective but efficient.

With the tagline “Stay on the Bright Side,” the company’s comprehensive range of products include high-quality solar panels, inverters, and batteries, designed to meet the diverse needs of both residential and commercial customers, with ease of payment options.

Ameh recalled that the company began its journey into the solar energy sector based on its conviction that it will help deepen the uptake of its decoders in the rural areas which major disincentive to subscribe to pay tv was lack of electricity supply to power their electric appliances including Tv sets, fans and other household appliances.

He said with about 15 years in the solar power business, StarTimes Solar is far ahead of its competitors who he said are largely new in the industry, adding that the already established structure and after sales service the company has built over the years remained its strength.

He said with the removal of both fuel and electricity subsidies by the Federal Government, there is no better time to enter the market on a large scale to help households and businesses meet up with their electricity demand.

StarTimes Solar, he said, is offering solar panels (450 and 550 WATTS), inverters (2 KVA, 3 KVA, 5 KVA, and 10 KVA), and batteries (2.5 KWH, 3.5 KWH, 5 KWH, 15 KWH) to households.

The inverters are hybrid, built with a combination of solar and battery inverters into a single unit and a dual-channel Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) that enables customers to connect with several panels. “With an inverter efficiency rate of 97.5, and a power rating range from 1600W, 2400W, 4000W, and 8000W, it is a perfect fit for residential and commercial use,” he explained.

According to StarTimes Solar, comparison with competitors, it offers cost-effective solutions for Nigerians looking to embrace the clean alternative energy source.

It said its unique selling points are innovative technology, superior performance, affordability, comprehensive solutions and exceptional service.

The fact that the solar inverters are hybrid units, combining solar and battery inverters into a single device is a mark of innovation that ensures maximum efficiency and versatility.

StarTimes Solar panels feature N-type mono-crystalline cells, known for their high efficiency and durability.

Despite offering premium products, StarTimes Solar is committed to providing competitive pricing to make solar power accessible to all Nigerians.

From small-scale home systems to large-scale commercial installations, StarTimes Solar has a solution for every need.

With a 48-hour after-sales service guarantee, StarTimes Solar ensures that customers receive prompt assistance and support.

The cell type used for StarTimes Solar panels is N-type mono-crystalline cells known for their high efficiency and better performance in lower light conditions and a PID (Potential Induced degradation) resistance that protects panel performance leakages. The panel has a 2-hour fast-charging template, a low degradation rate, and a 10-year warranty. Its batteries are Lithium-ion, with a battery regulatory control system also included.

The company said its SolarTimes 2 and 3kva solar solutions can power 5/7 bulbs, 3/6 fans, 1 TV, 1 computer, and a fridge while the 5KVA, 10KVA can power 5 to 8 bulbs, 5 to 8 fans, 1 to 2 TVs, 1 to 2 computers, 2 fridges, and 1 to 2 air conditions.

With the unique selling point of an all-in-one inverter, Lithium battery with a longer life span, mono panel, warranty covers, after-sales service of within 48 hours, and free delivery, StarTimes Solar is seeking to reach supermarkets, plazas, hotels, eateries, hospitals, estates, union offices, fuel stations, pharmaceutical companies, and betting shops with competitive price offerings.

Ameh said the company has put in place ease of acquisition plan by partnering with banks, adding that cooperative societies of companies could also take advantage of the eased payment plan to embrace alternative energy source and banish darkness in their homes and businesses.

In Nigeria alone, over 85 million people —more than four out of 10 Nigerians— are deprived of electricity. The World Bank said though the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-Up program (DARES) program, it intends to provide access to clean and reliable energy to 20per cent of the unelectrified and over 200,000 Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) by 2030 through private sector interventions. It said to create the conditions for even greater victories; it is working closely with the Nigerian authorities on grid reforms and sector performance improvements.
