    NPFL, StarTimes sign broadcast deal

    The Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) and StarTimes have signed a five-year broadcast rights deal that will bring the league back to television.

    The deal was announced yesterday at a press conference in Abuja.

    President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, who led members of the board of NPFL, said the football house will continue to make sure that Nigerian league is beamed across the globe and expose Nigerian players to the world.

    NPFL chairman, Gbenga Elegbeleye, described the event as a right step in the right direction.

    “We are proud to be the exclusive broadcaster of the NPFL,” said Joshua Wang, CEO of StarTimes Nigeria. “Football is the most popular sport in Nigeria, and we are excited to offer our subscribers the opportunity to watch the best of Nigerian football every week. We are committed to working with the NPFL to promote and develop the league, and we believe that this deal will be a win-win for both parties.”

    The deal will see StarTimes broadcast four matches of the NPFL per round in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons, and eight matches per round in the 2025/26, 2026/27, and 2027/28 seasons.

    The deal with StarTimes is a significant boost for the NPFL. It will provide the league with a much-needed financial boost, and it will also help to increase the visibility and popularity of the league.

    The NPFL is the top professional football league in Nigeria. The league has produced some of the best Nigerian footballers of all time, including Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, and others.

  • StarTimes launches StarLife, Area ten

    Lovers of Bollywood can now enjoy Indian movies as StarTimes has announced the addition of StarLife to its list of channels.

    This was disclosed by StarTimes’ the Brand & Marketing Director, Qasim Elegbede, at a press conference recently.

    Elegbede said that StarLife will showcase family dramas, blockbuster movies, series, celebrity dance shows and more on Channel 500/550. He also said that there are seven language options – English, Yoruba, Hausa, Swahili, Hindi, French and Portuguese – on StarLife.

    StartTimes also unveiled a local channel, Area ten at the press briefing.

    Speaking on Area Ten, Elegbede said, “It is a channel for everybody and its not the first time a channel like this is coming on board. Actually, Startimes launched Wazobia. For those who dont know, Wazobia started on Star Times. So Area Ten is even taking it higher and again it is a channel where sport is delivered in Pidgin.”

    According to the Content Marketing Manager, Bose Adewara, general entertainment and information are being disseminated in Pidging language on Area Ten.

    “You have live shows on this channel, talk about music, movies, lifestyle, food, fashion, breakfast shows and it cuts across every part of entertainment that how can expect except from movies,” she said.

    “And then it is good that we have not just Wazobia on our platform. People like variety and that’s what we are giving.”

  • Mide Martins, Nkechi Blessing sign contract with StarTimes

    Nigerian actors and filmmakers Mide Martins and Nkechi Blessing Sunday have signed a production deal with Nigeria’s leading pay-TV company, StarTimes.

    This is coming few months after Adebayo Salami, popularly known as Oga Bello, signed a production deal with the pay-TV company with his series ‘Alagbara’, which focuses on some issues concerning families and how effective the women in these families are.

    Although details of the deal of Mide Martins contract is yet to be disclosed by the actress, she shared pictures of contract deal with the company.

    However, curvy actress Nkechi Blessing, whose new movie is out, revealed that the new work, is already bringing good tiding.

    Sharing pictures of her engagement with StarTimes and contract with Viskit, the actress captioned the picture hers thus: “UNSANE is already Bringing Good Tidings…Signed and Sealed with @startimesng @vskitofficial ….Thank You For finding me worthy of your Reputable Brand…Guys What is Coming Will Blow Your Mind…”

  • NEW TELENOVELA ‘ASINTADO’ AIRS ON STARTIMES

    STARTIMES Nigeria has announced a new telenovela, Asintado, currently showing on StarTimes Novela E Plus, Channel 128 and 057.

    The new telenovela series, Asintado, is aired every Friday to Sunday at 6: 50pm African Time.

    According to StarTimes Content Manager, Abosede Adewara, the series centres on a tight relationship of the inseparable Ramirez siblings that disintegrate when they lose their parents in a fire. It follows the paths of both siblings living opposite lives. The siblings’ lives are thrust into a world of politics, power and corruption that shake their core values, murder their loved ones and potentially destroy themselves.

    “StarTimes beyond doubt has gained ground as one of the leading telenovelas choice with quality programming that includes interesting television series, dramas, sitcoms, shows and movies among others, which include some original programming spanning from different cultures, language and origins,” she said.

  • StarTimes On to reward content providers with PAOFF

    STARTIMES ON at the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, on May 16th, 2019, announced its Pan Africa Online Film Festival (PAOFF).

    The pay TV has set several awards to encourage African local online film creation and encourage local online film creation.

    As revealed, PAOFF is a quarterly online film awards competition, and is open to all local professional film and music video producers.

    The new platform which kicked off on May 1st to end May 23rd, 2019, is fans voting system for all videos that are qualified for the awards competition, which will include favorite film ranking board, favorite short film ranking board, favorite MV board.

    All videos will be listed in the three boards basing on their categories, and rank according to votes from StarTimes ON users.

    No.1 video of each board will win the quarterly Best Film Award, Best Short Film Award and Best MV Award, whose producer will get $1500 as prize.

  • I want to make StarTimes more affordable – CEO

    StarTimes Nigeria has unveiled its new CEO, David Zhang, at a media press briefing held at the Radisson Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos yesterday.

    Zhang who has worked for four years in Kenya as the CEO until January 21, 2019 when he came back to StarTimes Nigeria said one of his goals is to make the digital pay TV affordable and available to all.

    “As the new CEO, one of my goals is to make StarTimes a product affordable to all,” he said.

    “I like Nigerian and the people, and also the Nigerian food. Since we launched in Nigeria in 2010, our mission has remained the same – To provide affordable quality entertainment to every African home, and we do this through innovation, integrity, diligent and devotion. This has helped us to get closer to our vision – To become one of the most influential media groups in the world.

    “That is not all, our most recent business offering is our OTT business called StarTimes ON. StarTimes ON is our online video streaming service. It is the next generation of StarTimes streaming service. It introduces new features such as video on demand (VOD) live TV and lots of movies, sports and entertainment content all on the mobile app and free of charge.”

    Zhang who joined StarTimes Group in China about 30 years now, have worked in the overseas department in Africa for seven years.

    “Before now, I have worked in the StarTimes Nigeria operations department. In 2012, I first joined NTA-StarTimes operation department, but after one and half years, on 15th July 2013 I was dispatched to Kenya as the CEO of StarTimes in Kenya.”

    Brand and Marketing Director StarTimes, Qasim Elegbede added that by July 2019, the company will introduce a solar panel power system.

    “There will be no need for electricity that is you can watch all your programmes at any time of the day. If you already have the TV and input decoder, all you need is the solar panel. We also have like 10 projects that will be unveiled of local contents; series and movies.”

  • MTN, StarTimes partner on special bundle

    StarTimes has partnered MTN, the largest information communication technology company in Africa to offer mobile internet subscribers on the network a special data bundle for StarTimes ON mobile app.

    With the video Streaming bundles on StarTimes “ON” App, MTN subscribers can now enjoy unlimited entertainment and video on demand (VOD) service at a cheaper data price than any other network in Nigeria.

    Speaking on the development, The General Manager, Data & Devices, MTN, Abiodun Ajayi, said: “With a data bundle of N150, subscribers can enjoy up to 60 minutes of streaming time on StarTimes ON by simply sending ST1 via SMS to 131 while for N400 customer gets up to 180 minutes of streaming time by sending ST3 via SMS to 131.”

    Also commenting, The OTT Director at StarTimes Nigeria, Tony Tuo said that all MTN subscribers would also enjoy five premium channels that offer news, music, religion, movies and other entertainment content for free on StarTimes ON, a service which users of other networks have to pay to gain access to.

    According to Tuo, “StarTimes ON currently boasts of 3.5 million users in Nigeria and over 12 million across Africa, making its partnership with MTN the latest in an industry where it has become a common trend for telecoms and video operators to partner towards an effective delivery in a market where VOD and live streaming is on the rise.”

    StarTimes ON has more than 70 channels with over 40 of them free to users.

  • Fox’s famous series berths on StarTimes online platform

    FOX’S most famous TV series, like The Walking Dead and Empire, are to begin airing on StarTimes online video streaming platform, StarTimes ON, this March.

    Source from StarTimes says almost all Fox famous TV series would successively be available on StarTimes ON from 22nd March, while a Fox+ Series zone would particularly be created.

    Besides The Walking Dead and Empire, 24, X-files, Outcast, Bones, American Dad, Modern Family, Ghosted, Chance, Star and Family Guy will be first served in March to users of StarTimes ON.

    More TV series, including Legion, Prison Break, Homeland, Atlanta, American Horror Story, Wayward Pines, Da Vinci’s Demons, Futurama, The Americans, Sleepy Hollow, Bob’s Burger, Scream Queens, Rosewood, Baskets, 24 Legacy, Son of Zorn and The Gifted will join StarTimes ON later, in April, May and June.

    “We are very happy to bring Fox+ Series to our users and I’m sure that fans of American television series will fully enjoy themselves with StarTimes ON,” said Ariel Wang, StarTimes ON Operation Director, adding that StarTimes ON would continue to introduce excellent international and African local contents to the online video streaming platform.

    StarTimes provides Terrestrial TV (DTT) and Satellite TV (DTH) services to millions of customers in the market. Last year, it pioneered its online video streaming service with having forged a new brand, StarTimes ON, for the online business. Till now, StarTimes ON has accumulated over 12 million users in African market.

  • StarTimes gets CEO

    Pay television service provider, StarTimes has appointed David Zhang as the new chief executive officer of the firm in the country.

    His appointment which takes immediate effect comes as the tenure of Mr Justin Zhang ended last month.

    Its Public Relations and Communications Manager, Kunmi Balogun, in a statement, said David brings over two decades of experience in B2B and B2C capacity in both China and Africa, with a special interest in consumer and revenue growth management.

    David will lead the team in scaling the impact of the foundation laid by his predecessor which has seen a rise in subscriber base and new innovations in the country’s’ pay-tv industry.

    Until his appointment, David was the CEO of StarTimes in Kenya. Before then, he had worked in management capacity in Nigeria for over three years between 2011 and 2014, before leaving to head StarTimes business in the East African nation.

     

  • UNILAG TV airs on Startimes

    The University of Lagos ( UNILAG ) is set to launch Nigeria’s first campus television station, UNILAG TV on Tuesday.

    The station is to air on Startimes digital broadcast Channel 184.

    A statement by Deputy Registrar/ Managing Director, UNILAG Media Company, Mr Adebisi Seth Dare, noted that the channel would air all kinds of programmes, sports, documentaries, quality entertainment, and international news.

    Dare said the station would aim to be very reliable.

    He said: “It is the desire of the UNILAG TV Station to always meet the needs of its audience by delivering the highest standard of production values that would surpass the expectations of viewers.
