  • VIOs not completely banned from Lagos roads – LASG

The Lagos State Government (LASG) says it has not completely  banned the operations of  the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) being performed by Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) in the state.

The state Commissioner for Transportation, Prince Olanrewaju Elegushi, and the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde, said this in separate interviews granted the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.

They said that the VIS officials only went for training to improve their services in line with global best practices.

NAN reports that Gov. Akinwumi Ambode had on May 4 ordered the VIOs to keep off the roads following complaints from the public on how they were discharging their functions.

Elegushi, said, “Nobody is banning VIOs from the roads; there is no directive to that effect from the governor of Lagos State.

“Right now, the VIS officials in the state are undergoing training on how they will improve their services on Lagos roads.

“It is a month’s long event for the officials where they will undergo intensive training so that they will be able to deliver quality and better service across the state.

“ We all believe that VIOs need to perform their functions in a more civilised way and be technologically driven,’’ he said.

Also, Mr Steve Ayorinde, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, told NAN that that LASG’s order to the Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) to vacate the roads was to pave way for its reforms.

It is also come up with improved service delivery in the state, the commissioner said.

“There is an ongoing reform as to how the VIO carries out its operations, which might require that the inspection officers are off the streets at this point.

“The government is keen to have their operations more streamlined and technologically-driven in order to serve the good people of Lagos better,” Ayorinde said.

The state government believed that the officials needed to acquire more training so that they could serve residents of the state better, he said.

Lagos hosts beach soccer African tourney

The Lagos State Government is to build five new stadia in the different divisions of the state in its quest to promote excellence in sports and market the state through sports tourism.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, made the assertion on Wednesday in Lagos while unveiling Lagos as the Host City, Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations 2016.

Ayorinde said that the five stadia were already captured in the state’s 2017 budget proposal.

He said that Lagos as the Centre of Excellence had been number one in sports and entertainment and believed in using sports to sell the mega city.

Ayorinde said that the government was sponsoring the 2nd Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations, holding from Dec. 13 to Dec. 18 at the Eko Atlantic, because it believed in showcasing not just sports but its tourism potential.

He noted that two major components had been built into the hosting — sports and tourism, arts and entertainment — to achieve the state’s quest to make Lagos the sports hub in Africa.

Ayorinde said that the government had partnered with countries that excel in sports and many organisations to promote a culture of sports.

“As you can see, FC Barcelona Youth Academy had started in Lagos because Barca has an ally in the state.

“The state government has planned a package for the Yuletide which will commence immediately the competition ended with the first ever Lagos City Carnival.

“It will also organise the Lagos State fiesta which will hold simultaneously in Badagry, Epe, Ikorodu, Lagos Mainland and Lagos Island divisions, ending on Dec. 31.

“This year’s events have been well planned to ensure that people relaxed and enjoyed themselves during the Christmas and New year festivities under tight security,’’ he said.

The Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Deji Tinubu, said that Lagos was hosting because it wanted to showcase the excellence of Lagos through sports.

Tinubu said that the state had created more opportunities and varieties partnering with organisations, noting: “We are trying to create a sports culture where everybody can get into sports.

“Copa Lagos has been running for six years but we are redefining beach soccer. We want Lagos to be a sports destination’’.

He said that there would be bus shuttle from different locations for fans wishing to be at the venue to cheer the teams at the six-day event.

He added that there would be events to showcase Lagos at the opening and closing ceremonies.

The President, Nigeria Football Federation, AmajuPnnick, thanked Gov. AkinwunmiAmbode for hosting the event, noting that the hosting “will redefine beach soccer in its annals’’.

  • Lagos debunks rumour of Ambode in Edo

Lagos debunks rumour of Ambode in Edo

The Lagos State Government has dismissed allegations made by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Osagie Ize-Iyamu alleging that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and his Kaduna State counterpart, Nasir El-Rufai were in Edo State for the election.

In a statement signed by the State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde on Wednesday, the government described the allegations by the PDP candidate as reckless and disgraceful.

Mr. Ayorinde while clarifying the position of the government said Governor Ambode was presently overseas for an official assignment and in any case had no business being in Edo State on Election Day.

“The Lagos State Governor served as the chairman Campaign Council constituted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his duty ended 24 hours before the election because no campaign was supposed to hold 24 hours to the election and having completed his assignment which included appearing with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Grand Rally in Edo State earlier in the month, Governor Ambode has no reason to return to Edo State on election day and for this sort of lie to have been peddled by a candidate who is supposed to be a pastor, is reckless and disgraceful.

Mr. Ayorinde said Governor Ambode had clearly enumerated his position on the election during the Grand Finale of the campaign when he said that like Lagos where continuity has moved perfectly well, Edo State also deserves continuity in governance.

“That message has been passed and has been accepted by the majority of Edo indigenes and therefore there would not be any need for the Governor to return to Edo on Election Day. The general public and security operatives are hereby advised to ignore the desperate lies of Pastor Ize-Iyamu,” Mr. Ayorinde said.

  • Economy of Lagos and the creative industry, by Steve Ayorinde

Economy of Lagos and the creative industry, by Steve Ayorinde

Then it was the turn of the leader of the Lagos State delegation to speak, his speech captured the essence of Nigeria’s representation at the festival.

He said: “I bring you good tidings from Lagos State and particularly from the governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode. Lagos, as you know, is the home of Nollywood. Without Nollywood, there won’t be contemporary Lagos and without Lagos, there won’t be Nollywood. So, the two have worked together.”

He recalled that 10 years ago, Toronto recognised Lagos and picked a film by Tunde Kelani titled Abeni to come to Toronto.

“10 years ago, there was only one journalist who was here and only one government official because the other government officials couldn’t get visas to come. But tonight, and throughout this festival, Toronto will see that Lagos is here. Because the industry has grown and that is why Lagos State government in particular and Nigeria in general is very proud of this opportunity,” he added.

Ayorinde hinted that Lagos is a 21-million-people state, “which means that it is home to the largest number of black people anywhere in the world.”

According to him, “If Lagos were to be a country on its own, it would be the fifth largest economy in the entire world – that says something about its resources. Lagos wouldn’t be what it is without the creative industry like Nollywood. Therefore, we are proud that Lagos is the first city in Africa that is the focus of the City-to-City programme. What can I say other than to congratulate Cameron Bailey and his team for a job well done and for believing in Nollywood.  I also congratulate Kemi Adetiba, the director of tonight’s film,  Mo Abudu and the entire team, Kene Mkparu and all other people behind this film. Also, I congratulate all the other directors and people behind the other eight films that will be shown throughout the festival. What will not be in doubt, by the time this festival ends, is that Nollywood has arrived and this is the renaissance that African cinema needs.”

  • Loud start for Nigeria at TIFF …as global attention shifts to Lagos movies

The historic Elgin Theatre was a colourful sight, as the cast and crew of ‘The Wedding Party‘ comprising Kemi Adetiba, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Banky W., Iretiola Doyle, Sola Sobowale, Adesua Etomi, Zainab Balogun, Beverly Naya and Mo Abudu rocked the red carpet before and after the screening of the romcom.

Incidentally, the film of the night, ‘The WeddingParty‘, directed by Kemi Adetiba, is among the eight Nigerian films that have been selected by the festival through its City-to-City programme, profiling Lagos this year.

This fall, Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director, TIFF, had programmed the selection from Africa and the Middle East. Thus, there were other artistes and film promoters of the other seven films from Nigeria, which include: ’76 by Izu Ojukwu; ’93 Days by Steve Gukas; ‘GreenWhite Green’ by Abba Makama; ‘Just Not Married‘ by Uduak-Obong Patrick;  ‘Okafor’s Law‘ by Omoni Oboli and ‘Oko Ashewo‘ (Taxi Driver) by Daniel Emeke Oriahi.

The role call also had OC Ukeje and Kunle Afolayan, who is being profiled by the festival as an exemplary model of filmmaking from Nigeria, even as his latest film, ‘The CEO‘, has been scheduled for an industry screening.

The night showed so much promise for the next 10 days, as Bailey, David Oyelowo, a special guest and notable British-Nigerian actor, and Steve Ayorinde, Lagos State Commissioner of Information and Strategy, led the opening ceremony with remarkable speeches that captured the essence of Nigeria’s participation at this year’s event.

“We have been doing City-to-City for many years, featuring cities like London, Seoul, Athens, Mumbai, Buenos Aires, Istanbul and Tel Aviv. But then, it became obvious that the place to go next is Lagos. Although we have been having Nigerian films at the festival like Abeni by Tunde Kelani andHalf of a Yellow Sun by Biyi Bandele, we have not really given the kind of attention that filmmaking from Nigeria deserves,” said Bailey.

He further said: “When the City- to City discussion came up, we thought of the remarkable and strong productions, incredible artistes and great talents based in Lagos as well as the new generation of filmmakers whom we thought we should introduce to the international audience. For these reasons, we said this year, it has to be Lagos.

“One of the first people that I told is an actor who is one of the best actors working anywhere on the planet earth, given that he has shown the range of his skill as an actor-he is David Oyelowo of Selma.”

With this, he introduced Oyelowo whose name immediately called for a standing ovation.

“My people!” David Oyelowo thundered with excitement, keeping the applause going.

He said: “I feel great standing in the presence of people who can call my name correctly. I stand before you as David Oyetokunbo Oyelowo,” stressing the right pronunciation.

“My dad gets worried sometimes about how my name is pronounced and he would tell them that they have to call it like the town crier… Oye-Oye-Oyelowo. This is one of the moments I must tell you that I am a very proud Nigerian. We are story tellers by nature. We have been telling stories traditionally, comically and poetically.  Tonight, I would tell you the reason I have so much confidence in what is happening with Nollywood. The confidence I have as an actor came from my Nigerian heritage. I lived in Nigeria for seven year from the age six to 13. And something I learnt there was how to walk into any situation as they came. We don’t know how to be shy. We don’t know how to walk into a room sideways. Working as an actor in the UK, we get so formal with the lines when we go for auditions.  But in Naija, we say… ‘‘just give me the part nowlet me play it.’’

“People say Nollywood is number two or three, but I say we are going to be number  one.’’

And when it was the turn of the leader of the Lagos State delegation to speak, his speech captured the essence of Nigeria’s representation at the festival.

He said: “I bring you good tidings from Lagos State and particularly from the governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode. Lagos, as you know, is the home of Nollywood. • Ambode seeks policemen redeployment over unauthorized raid

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, on Tuesday asked the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, to redeploy some police officers attached to the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences Unit.

The request followed last Friday’s raids in different parts of Lagos by officers of the taskforce, leading to a rough treatment and arrests of innocent citizens.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, the governor sought an immediate redeployment of several of the task force officers from the unit and possibly from the state over what he called “unacceptable conduct.”

Ayorinde said the request was necessary in order to prevent a reoccurrence of last weekend’s unauthorized raid and indiscriminate arrest of citizens who were out to have fun on Friday night.

According to the commissioner, preliminary investigation showed that the unauthorized raid was carried out with the knowledge of the Taskforce second in command, SP Taiwo Adeoluwa, without the approval of the Chairman, SP. Saheed Olayinka Egbeyemi.

“The conduct of the affected officers is not in tandem with the vision of Lagos State Government and is therefore condemnable. Their conduct is also unbecoming of officers who are expected to protect the citizenry and ensure that citizens and visitors find every part of the state safe and conducive enough not only on Friday nights but every day.”

The commissioner added that governor Ambode’s massive investments in security and “Light Up Lagos” Project was meant to create a 24-7 economy that encourages businesses to thrive.

He said the government would not fold its arms and watch any overzealous officer derail the vision that has earned the government applause.

Articulated truck killed street hawker, Lagos claims

Three arrested for destroying BRT buses

The Lagos State Government has clarified the misconception surrounding the unfortunate killing of a street hawker at Maryland Bus Stop on Wednesday morning.

The government in a statement signed the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, said it was a truck owned by a soft drink company that hit the deceased and not a BRT bus as being circulated in the social media.

“It wasn’t any of our buses that killed him (hawker). It was a soft drink company truck that unfortunately crushed the boy while he was trying to escape from KAI officers who were on patrol trying to rid the street of street hawkers and traders.

“But hoodlums now took advantage of that to start destroying government assets, including several of the brand new BRT buses,” he said.

Ayorinde said it took the intervention of a team from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) to quell the riotous scene caused by the hoodlums before the corpse of the street hawker was taken to the morgue at the General Hospital, Ikeja.

The commissioner said at least three hoodlums alleged to have been part in the destruction of the BRT buses have been arrested, saying the law would take its full course.

“The Lagos State Government would like to use this opportunity to further reiterate that it would not relent in ridding the state of illegality, street trading and hawking,” he said.

  • Building Collapse: Lagos halts Lekki Gardens’ construction

…Asks directors to report to Police within 24hours

The Lagos State Government has halted construction on Lekki Gardens’ site, following the death of 25 construction site workers who lost their lives on Tuesday as a result of the collapse of a five-storey building under construction.

The State Government has consequently directed the suspension of work at the site and ordered the State Police Command to cordon it off as it is now a crime scene.

In a press release issued on Wednesday and signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, the Lagos State Government also announced that based on preliminary reports and investigation, it was discovered that the collapsed building was served contravention notice for exceeding the approved floors and thereafter sealed by the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

It added that it has also been discovered that in a brazen act of defiance and impunity, the owners of the building, Messrs Lekki Worldwide Estate Limited, the promoters of Lekki Gardens, criminally unsealed the property and continued building beyond the approved floors until the unfortunate incident of Tuesday which has led to loss of lives.

The statement added that arising from the Lagos State Executive Council meeting decision on Wednesday, the State Government will no longer tolerate the action of unscrupulous owners and builders who challenge its supervisory control thereby endangering the lives of Lagosians.

The government also directed further integrity tests be carried out on every other construction project which has or is currently being handled by Messrs Lekki Worldwide Estate Limited in the interest of public safety.

Furthermore, the release quoted the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode as saying that all directors of Lekki Worldwide Estate Limited are strongly advised to submit themselves to the State Commissioner of Police within the next twenty four hours in their own interest or face immediate arrest.

The statement also commended the timely response and remarkable intervention by the combined men of the Lagos State Emergency Authority (LASEMA), the Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Red Cross, National Emergency Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Building Control Agency and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

The State Government also warned that it will no longer be business as usual stating that any developer either on existing or new building projects who fails to comply with building and construction regulations or attempts to subvert the law will henceforth face criminal prosecution.

The State Government however expresses its condolences on the death of the victims.
