  • Your success depends on your character, Rector tells freshers

The Rector of Benson Idahosa School of Basic and Applied Studies, Dr Mark Ighile, has told fresh students to be of good conducts.

Ighile spoke during the freshers’ matriculation held at the School of Postgraduate Studies Hall. The students were admitted for diploma in professional programmes being offered by the school.

The rector told them that their success depended on their attitude and frame of mind,  adding that only students with right frame of mind would excel. He urged the freshers to focus on their studies and have clear pictures of what they intended to achieve.

“Those who are focused will end up becoming subjects of focus,” he said.

Speaking on the theme: Winning the race before you, the rector advised the students to use the opportunity of their admission to strive for excellence. He said management would ensure strict compliance of the school regulations. He admonished the freshers to abide by the oath they took and show good behaviour.

According to him, the essence of the matriculation is to provide an opportunity to fresh students to learn the do’s and don’ts of the school.

Ighile assured parents of the school’s readiness to train their children with the state-of- the art facilities and modern knowledge.

While administering the oath on the students, Registrar, Mr Enoma Aruevbose, advised them to be obedient and shun unruly behaviour.

2018 world cup qualifier Rohr: Why I invited Iheanacho, Iwobi, Success

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has explained why he invited young stars Isaac Success (Watford), Kelechi Iheanacho (Man City) and Alex Iwobi (Arsenal) for the World Cup qualifiers.

Iheanacho and Iwobi started both games against Zambia and Cameroon, while the Hornets’ number ten missed out as a result of injury.

“As the team and the country had been deeply affected by failing to qualify for the finals in Gabon, I wanted to bring in some younger players into the squad.

“This, of course, is without closing the door on anyone,”  Rohr told fifa.com.

Rohr is not totally neglecting experience and the likes of Mikel, Echiejile, Onazi, Ideye and Ahmed Musa were handed opportunities to add to the international caps against Zambia and Algeria.

Nigeria will face Cameroon in Uyo in their next World Cup qualifier in August.

Golan said: “Having signed this MoU with DICON today, we will be fast and thorough for the benefit of your nation; your country has the potentials to be among the leading industrial nations of the world.

“My vision for Nigeria is to have a functional and productive manufacturing DICON with special emphasis on transfer of technology that will be of immense benefit to your country at the long run.”

The Silver Shadow boss hailed the Directorate of Legal, DICON for an excellent job done in the process of packaging the MoU, adding that he saw the MoU as potent document that would bind his company and the corporation together.

“I am optimistic we will succeed as we strive with the same spirit to solve the already identified problems together with same sense of urgency,” he added.

The D-G said he was quite elated to witness the signing of MoU, adding that the MoU was the beginning of a robust relationship with Silver Shadow after due process had been followed leading to a Joint Venture Agreement (JVA).

He described the event as big milestone.

According to him, the path taken to arrive at the signing of the MoU might be slow but what would have constituted some impediments to the race of rapid industrial growth of manufacturing of military products had been taken care of.

    Success out for three weeks

A hamstring injury prevented the former Flying Eagles star from suiting up in the Premier League fixture versus Crystal Palace on Boxing Day, and additional tests carried out revealed that the injury is not minor.

“Success will miss two or three more weeks, more or less,” Watford coach Walter Mazzarri told reporters.

“Okaka we are hoping a bit earlier. We are doing all we can. He has big muscles and we need to be careful how we use him. For sure he will be back for Middlesbrough.”

  • Stitching up to success

    Stitching up to success

She knew that the only way to fill the void in her spirit was to give her dream of being an interior designer a shot. Today, the Oyo State-based entrepreneur, Mrs Ngozi Maureen Ojiego, has designed her way to success. DANIEL ESSIET reports.

OYO State-based woman entrepreneur, Mrs Ngozi Maureen Ojiego  has stitched   her way to success through a leap into interior decorations.

A graduate of Linguistics from the University of Calabar, Mrs  Ojiego knew that the only way to fill the void in her spirit was to give her dream of being an interior designer a shot.  She has a huge passion for interiors.

Her words: “I have always had the flair for colours, spatial arrangements, decorating spaces, and my strong belief that we could have functional and beautiful spaces without breaking the bank.”

She registered  Timorin Concepts Limited in 2011 and its opened doors for business in October of the same year.

As Chief Executive of TMC Interiors and the Managing Director Drapes & Stitches and Bubu & Zara’s Kid’s Salo, she started with  about  N3million, which she spent on rents, renovation, stocks, and stationery, among others.

Though she started out slow, she stuck in long enough to break through and now she owns a thriving interior design company. She believes she creates beauty with her fabric, prints and designs. The good quality of her products delivered on time at an affordable price, are the reasons for her soaring leap.

She said: ‘’To the glory of God, we have moved from a staff strength of six  to 11, and we have invested proceeds from the same business into two other new subsidiaries: TMC retail outlet and Bubu and Zara’s Kids Salon. So, I would say that we are taking baby steps and are moving.”

Today, she is garnering attention not just to her company, but also to her self. As an entrepreneur, she is amazing.

Mrs Ojiego ensures that every garment is a beautiful work of art. Her background has always been creative. She covered all areas of interior designs. Through learning, she has branched out into so many areas she wasn’t even considering when she started. She has been involved in window treatments, curtains, blinds, art and bedroom designs. Sourcing fabric is a fun, though sometimes time-consuming, aspect of her work. She looks for fabrics that will hold up to regular use, and which design sets them apart.  She’s looking forward to expanding her skills and services, but she’s had some challenges.

“We had a production line that tied down huge capitals, which overtime depleted in terms of shelf life.

‘’I learnt to do away with the lines that were not working, diversify into other interior-related lines and produced upon request.”

On  sacrifices to be a successful entrepreneur, she recalled: “ I have had to deny myself a lot of luxury and vacations, just to stay afloat and pay salaries. I had to sacrifice a well paying job to follow my dreams, balancing between personal life and work, as I occasionally have to attend to projects outside my primary location, but at the end of it all, it’s been worth it.”

Her advice for young entrepreneurs. “I would advise the young entrepreneurs to believe in themselves, take the risk, and take action. No one ever gets anything by doing nothing. They also would need to define their market, spend wisely, join groups and get mentors.

Where do she see herself and business in 10 and 20 years from now? I have got very tall dreams; all things being equal 10- 20 years from now, I hope to have grown my sales by over a 1000 per cent, Turnover  in billions (beaming with smiles)staff  strength of  20 to 30, hopefully capturing 70 per cent  of the southwest market and also exporting my services and probably, be the best interior journalist  and designer Nigeria ever produced.”

SMrs Ojiego is happy with what she has accomplished so far.“I am humbled by the trust people have reposed on me. I give God the glory. I thank my family for believing  in me and supporting me and my  team for believing in my vision and not giving up on me. I also do know that there are a lot of grounds, yet to be conquered,” she added.

The Nigerian’s strike sealed victory for the Hornets at the Riverside Stadium, and coach Walter Mazzarri has revealed that the forward is struggling to recover in time for the Liberty Stadium trip.

“After I substituted him [against Boro] because the physio told me during the game he was already hurting. I tried to keep him on as much as I could during the game.

“After the 90 minutes when we were back in the dressing room they had a look at him and confirmed he could not train for the next couple of days because of a muscular problem. Now we will see.

  • Success story of Osun’s feeding programme

Success story of Osun’s feeding programme

The free feeding and health programmes introduced by the Osun State government to encourage school enrolment, attendance and rate as well as enhance pupils’ health has not only become a model for the federal and state governments, but also a platform for agricultural development  and food production. SINA FADARE reports.

At the onset, the primary objectives of the free school feeding programme introduced by the Osun State government was aimed at increasing school enrolment, encourage attendance as well as enhance pupils’ health in all public primary schools.

Farmers appear to be the major beneficiaries of the programme as they embarked on massive food production as well as having ready market for their produce.

The programme has also enhanced the income of local farmers; thus reducing poverty level as all goods are sourced locally.

On weekly basis, no fewer than 40 herds of cattle; 10,000 crates of eggs; 20,000 chickens, over 400 metric tons of fish are needed to feed the pupils.

About 500 unemployed youths were trained and empowered for mass fish production under Osun Fisheries Out-Growers Production Scheme (OFOPS).

The scheme supplies well over 400 metric tons of fish regularly for the school feeding while cultivation of cocoyam through a cocoyam rebirth programme was also encouraged.

Over 1,000 cocoyam farmers (selected across the nine federal constituencies) were trained and assisted to mass cultivate pink cocoyam for inclusion in the school feeding menu.

Today, the number has risen to over 15,000, as more women and young adults have taken to farming; cultivating cocoyam, vegetables, tomatoes and melon. The programme, which began in 2006, has become a success story and indeed a reference model for many states and countries as pupils from kindergarten to primary four in public primary schools are fed daily with balanced foods such as fish, meat, vegetables and fruits that are rich in protein.

The pupils are de-wormed twice a year. A comprehensive menu which, among other things, would help to develop the brain capacities of the growing children in their formative years was drawn up by stakeholders in the education sector.

The team argued that a well-fed pupil is likely to be healthy and more attentive in class than those on empty stomach.

Addressing delegates from all the states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on the school feeding programme, Osun State Deputy Governor, who doubles as the Commissioner for Education under whose supervision the school feeding is carried out, Mrs. Grace Titilayo Laoye-Tomori noted that the programme began in 2006 as one of the 13 pilot states (Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, inclusive).

She explained that the Aregbesola-led administration extended the beneficiaries of the school feeding programme in 2012 to primary four pupils and rechristened it Osun School Feeding and Health Programme (O-Meals).

Mrs. Laoye-Tomori maintained that the free meals in public schools has led to sharp increase in enrolment from 155,318 to 194,253 after four weeks of its implementation, saying that currently over 252,000 pupils are being fed while they remain in school until closing time.

She said: “According to the Federal Bureau of Statistics Report of 2013, Osun State has the highest primary school enrolment rate in the country and the lowest number of children of school age being out of school.”

Mrs. Laoye-Tomori said that through the programme, the state was able to capture the actual figures of school pupils being fed under the programme which costs the government the sum of N18 million a week. She said a total of 3,007 food vendors were engaged, trained, kitted with uniforms and made to undergo medical screening.

The vendors, according to her, were given loans to procure cooking utensils and organised into 124 functional co-operative investment and credit societies for effective administrative purposes.

Mrs. Laoye-Tomori noted that the success of the programme has attracted compliments and accolades from both local and international forums.

In 2014, the British Parliament invited the Governor Rauf Aregbesola to talk on the implementation of the school feeding programme for which the Parliament praised him.

She explained that commendation also turned in from government of South Africa which sponsored her visit to the country.

While praising the delegates for the visit to have a requisite insight into the dynamics of the school feeding programme, Mrs. Laoye-Tomori advised them to sit back and fashion out what will work for their respective states and people.
