Suicide bomber kills 14 in N’Djamena
A man dressed in a woman’s burqa blew himself up in the main market in Chad’s capital N’Djamena yesterday, killing 14 people and injuring 74, a police spokesman said.
No group immediately claimed responsibility but Chad blamed Boko Haram. “Our current count is 15 dead,” police spokesman Paul Manga, said, a total which included the suicide bomber.
A Reuters witness saw at least ten bodies lying near the entrance to the market where aid workers helped injured people into ambulances. Security forces stopped people entering the area and searched stalls for more explosives.
Several witnesses said that the bomber had tried to enter the market wearing a woman’s burqa. Chad authorities banned the head-to-toe religious garment last month, citing the risk that attackers could use it as a disguise or hide explosives underneath.

He said some of the injured were also in critical condition.
Zakariya Shettima, who lives nearby and arrived on the scene after the blast in the small community of Musari, said he saw blood and body parts and that it had left a crater and destroyed several shops in the market.
But the police said only four people died. Borno Police Commissioner Aderemi Opadokun said the explosive happened along Baga/Monguno road.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri, that four persons were also injured.
“A female suicide bomber detonated an Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) strapped on her body along Baga/Monguno highway, killing herself and two others on Saturday.
“Four persons sustained injuries during the attack,” he said.
He also confirmed an IED explosion near a military check point in Konduga Local Government Area, in which two persons were injured.
“It is true that we had a suspected IED explosion at Tungushe village in Konduga LGA on Saturday near a military check point.
“Two persons were injured and they are now being treated at the hospital,” he said.
Opadokun advised residents to be vigilant and report strange objects to the nearest security check point for action. (NAN
Boko Haram has killed thousands of people and displaced some 1.5 million in an insurgency to establish an Islamic caliphate in the northeast of Nigeria but appears to have lost most of the territory it seized to government counter-offensives this year.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which followed two weekend bombings that killed at least 30 people and also appeared to be the work of Boko Haram.

A suicide bomber has hit a mosque in the Maiduguri Monday Market killing 16 people, according to witnesses.
The bomber, a young man who disguised as a wheelbarrow pusher loaded with fruits attacked the mosques when worshippers had gathered for their afternoon prayers on Saturday.
About 30 people were reported to have been wounded in the blast.
The blast which vibrated across the city occurred at about 3:30pm.
Abubakar Adamu, a trader at the market gave his account the attack that “the young man was pushing a wheelbarrow and when he came near the mosque, he pretended he wanted to join us in observing the late afternoon prayers; as he parked the wheelbarrow, and went to the entrance of the already filled mosque the bomb went off.”
Adamu said he escaped because he was yet to finish his ablution before joining the prayers when the incident occurred.
“I was still performing my ablution when that incident happened. I had to take to my heels even though the sound of the blast had almost rendered me deaf,” he said.
A Civilian Joint Task Force source informed that the blast occurred when the prayer session was about to commence at about 3.25pm with over five dozen of people in the mosque.
“We were shocked and terrified with the loud explosion that rocked through the market and other shops when the prayer session was cut off short; for people to flee for safety. But many were injured in the stampedes for safety, as there was no deaths recorded in the mosque, as the injured ones were taken to hospital for treatment,” he said.
Another eyewitness Hamisu Babayo a shop owner near the mosque, also told our correspondent that the Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs) was hidden in an obscure corner of the mosque in the morning before the suicide bomber came to the mosque to detonate the explosive at about 3.30pm.

20 die as suicide bomber hits Saudi mosque
An Islamic State group suicide bomber attacked a Shiite mosque in Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia yesterday , killing and wounding several people in an assault that threatens to fan sectarian tensions.
The bomber struck during the Jumat in Eastern Province, where assailants linked to the Sunni extremist IS killed seven members of the minority Shiite community in November.
The interior ministry said a suicide bomber detonated a bomb at the mosque in Kudeih, in the Shiite-majority city of Qatif, the official SPA news agency reported.
“An individual detonated a bomb he was wearing under his clothes during Friday prayers at Ali Ibn Abi Taleb mosque in Kudeih in Qatif,” the ministry spokesman said in a statement.
He said several people were killed and wounded, without giving a breakdown.
Shiite activists and witnesses gave conflicting tolls, with one saying four worshippers were killed and others speaking of 22 dead.
IS said it was behind the attack, the first time the group has officially claimed an attack in Saudi Arabia, and vowed “dark days ahead” for Shiites until militants “chase them from the Arabian Peninsula”.
IS considers Shiites as heretics.
A statement published online said “soldiers of the Caliphate” were behind the attack by Abu Amer al-Najdi who “detonated an explosives belt” in the mosque.
The United States condemned the bombing, but White House spokesman Josh Earnest said it was not immediately able to confirm it was the work of IS.
Shiite Iran demanded that the perpetrators be found and punished, and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah said it holds the Saudi authorities “totally responsible” for the bombing.

Boko Haram suicide bomber kills eight in Adamawa
A Boko Haram suicide bomber attacked a rural market in Adamawa State yesterday, killing eight people and injuring 14 others, witnesses said.
“Most of the bodies are mutilated, heads and other parts removed,” said vendor Lami Aboki.
State lawmaker Jerry Kundisi said the blast killed nine people, including the bomber, and injured 14.
Cattle trader Abubakar Musa said the explosion happened near the sheep market.
He added that he counted nine bodies at the scene.
But some, including merchant Abubakar Garba, said the bomb appeared to have been planted on the dirty road between the sheep market and vegetable stalls. The attack in Garkida, a rural town 165 kilometres north of the Adamawa State capital, Yola, was among a slew of attacks that have occurred since multinational forces broke up Boko Haram’s so-called Islamic caliphate by driving the insurgents out of all northeastern towns.
On Friday, Boko Haram recaptured the border town of Marte.
On Saturday, the military said it destroyed 10 insurgent forest camps. The same day, the Islamic extremists attacked the newly recaptured town of Sabongari Yandulam in northeast Adamawa, killing one man and abducting six women, witnesses said.
In the boldest assault, hundreds of Boko Haram fighters last week attempted to shoot their way into the biggest military base in the Northeast, Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri, but met fierce resistance from troops.

10-year-old suicide bomber kills 7 in Yobe attack
A female suicide bomber said to be about 10 years old yesterday blew up herself and six others at the jam packed Abacha market, Damaturu, the Yobe state capital.
Thirty-three other people were wounded, some critically, in the attack.
The victims were mostly hawkers selling smoked fish and sachet water at the exit to the Damaturu Central Motor Park.
The wounded were rushed to the Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital for treatment, according to the medical director of the hospital, Dr. Garba Fika.
One of the early sympathisers at the medical facility was Governor Ibrahim Gaidam.
He was briefed on the conditions of the victims.
The attack bore the signature of Boko Haram, which has increased its attacks in the last one week in the state and neighbouring Borno following weeks of reverses inflicted by the army.
Suspected terrorists of Boko Haram penultimate Friday attacked the College of Administrative and Business Studies, Potiskum in Yobe State.
One of them blew up himself after policemen, assisted by staff and students of the institution frustrated his effort to unleash terror.
His two accomplices were arrested.
Another gang of terrorists retook Marte, about 112 kilometers from Maiduguri on Friday.
Simultaneously, some others launched a quick strike on Mule on the outskirts of Maiduguri, less than 48 hours after an aborted attack on the Giwa Army barracks in the Borno State capital during which 12 people died.
Two other raids earlier in the week on Bale and Kayamla by Boko Haram insurgents had claimed 55 lives.
Doctors and nurses were seen at the emergency ward of the Sani Abacha battling to save victims of yesterday’s suicide bombing.
An official appealed for blood donation for the victims.
Dr Fika told Gaidam that he and his team were trying their best and might refer some of the patients to the Federal Medical Centre, Nguru or Azare in Bauchi State if necessary.
The governor said government would foot the bill of all the victims.
He described the attack as unfortunate and said the country would overcome the terror menace.
Consequent upon yesterday’s attack, the authorities shut down the Abacha Market.
Security personnel asked buyers and sellers to leave the area immediately.
A security source told The Nation that they needed to sweep the market and determine that there is no left over of any explosive device before the market can be reopened for business.

Boko Haram suicide bomber blown up in Yobe school attack
A suicide bomber on an attack mission to the College of Administrative and Business Studies, Potiskum,Yobe State yesterday blew up himself after policemen ,assisted by the staff and students of the institution, frustrated his effort to unleash terror .
His two accomplices were arrested.
The terrorists, believed to be members of Boko Haram had stormed the school gate at about 8.15 am where they met a long queue of people being screened by the security personnel before being allowed into the school compound.
The security measure was introduced following a wave of terror attacks in the state.
The terrorists, who were armed with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and an AK 47 soon began firing on the crowd.
“We had just started a class when we heard gunshots coming from the direction of the gates and we instantly realised we were under attack which made us to rush out of the class,” student Tijjani Musa said.
Another student, Mustapha Umar, said the gunman managed to pass through the gates amid the chaos that broke out after he began shooting.
“He kept firing sporadic shots, but was chased by a group of students who were frantically trying to subdue him.
“When he ran out of ammunition he detonated the explosives under his robe, killing himself but no one from the crowd,” Umar told AFP.
The suicide bomber’s accomplices then took to their heels, but were later apprehended by the police.
The police, detailing the sequence of the attack on their Twitter handle, said: “At 8:15 a.m., three suspected suicide bombers entered College of Arts and Business Studies, Potiskum.
“Due to security arrangement on ground, one of the attackers blew himself up. He died on the spot, injuring six other persons. All six injured have been rushed to hospital and are receiving treatment. Two other suicide bombers took to their heels.
“The two suicide bomber suspects on the run have now been arrested at different locations after a coordinated pursuit by the police. One AK 47 rifle, ammunition recovered from suspects. The only dead person at the moment from the Potiskum incident is the suicide bomber.”
The police said that the Commissioner of Police in Yobe State was in Potiskum coordinating security activities and response to the attack.
The injured were rushed to the Potiskum General Hospital close to the school for treatment.
The Police Public Relations officer Yobe State Command, Mr. Toyin Gbadegesin, who confirmed the incident said the bomber killed himself in the process while injuring several others.
He also said the situation had been brought under control.
The PPRO called on the public not to take for granted the gains of the ongoing peace efforts intensified by the security forces and urged them to remain vigilant in the fight against insurgency and to report people with suspicious character for prompt action.
Last November, at least 58 people were killed and another 117 injured when a suicide bomber attacked a student assembly ground inside the Government Comprehensive Secondary School.
One of Boko Haram’s most gruesome student massacres also occurred in Yobe in September of 2013 when dozens of students were killed in their sleep at the Federal Government College in the town of Buni Yadi.
The terror group has been recording a series of reverses lately following unrelenting onslaught from the military with assistance from Chadian,Camerounian and Nigerien troops.
