  • Suicide bomber injures three

A botched suspected Boko Haram suicide attack targeting a group of Shiite Muslims injured three people in Potiskum, Yobe State yesterday, witnesses told AFP.

The would-be bomber detonated his explosives a few metres (yards) from an open-air mosque in the Dogo Tebo area of Potiskum shortly after afternoon prayers.

“Three worshippers were hit by shrapnel and sustained mild injuries while the bomber’s thighs and legs were blown off,” said local resident Mukhtar Ubale in an account supported by two others.

Another resident who witnessed the explosion, Zakari Kabiru, said the bomber, thought to be aged about 30, was taken to hospital but his chances of survival were slim.

“Only his torso was intact but the lower parts of his body were shattered,” he said, blaming the Sunni jihadist group Boko Haram for the attack.

Boko Haram, whose insurgency to create a hard-line Islamic state in northeast Nigeria has killed at least 15,000 since 2009, condemns Shias as heretics who should be killed.

The group has carried out several suicide and bombing attacks on Potiskum, which is the commercial hub of Yobe state and one of the worst hit by the violence.

  • Ten killed, 31 injured in Yobe suicide attack

Ten people have been confirmed dead and 31 injured in a suicide attack by a female suicide bomber in Yobe State on Sunday.

The attack took place at the Damaturu Central Motor park near the A division police Station that was on January 9th burnt down by the Boko Haram insurgents.

The State Police Public Relation Officer Toyin Gbadegesin said the bomber made several failed attempts to bomb the military outfit inside the park before she boarded a half-loaded Sharon car and blew herself off killing 10 people at the spot.

“At about 12.10 hr Hijab wearing female suicide bomber came into the park and went to the security vehicle there and she was turned away after suspecting her movement. She then went to a commercial Sharon vehicle in the car that was half loaded and the bomb exploded

“In the blast 10 people died, 31 are critically injured and are lying at the General Sani Abatcha hospital in Damaturu. We have condoned off the area and investigation is currently ongoing,” Gbadegesin stated.

  • Boko Haram suicide bomber hits Niger

Boko Haram attacked Niger Republic town Diffa yesterday, killing five people in a suicide bombing, after the army repelled an attack by the sect.

It was the second attack by Boko Haram in three days on Niger’s southern border region, where some 2,500 Chadian troops have gathered ahead of a planned military offensive by regional powers against the sect.

Niger’s parliament is due to vote today on a proposal to send its troops into Nigeria to help fight Boko Haram.

Residents in Diffa said fighting was heard between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. (0600 to 1000 GMT) in the southern outskirts of the town.

“There was fighting between security forces and elements of Boko Haram who tried to enter the town,” said a military source. “Fighting is taking place around the bridge at Doutchi. There are many dead.”

Local residents said a young boy carrying explosives blew himself up in Diffa’s market. Local radio Anefi, however, said the bomb was thrown by a young man on a motor-bike who escaped.

“We have carried five bodies out of the market,” said a member of the local emergency services. “There are around 15 wounded, some of them in a serious condition.”

Chadian forces already crossed into Nigeria last week to the south of Lake Chad to attack Boko Haram in the town of Gamboru, bordering Cameroon.

On Saturday, the governments of Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Benin agreed to establish an 8,700 strong regional force.

Chad has deployed some 2,500 soldiers to neighbouring Cameroon and Niger as part of this effort.

Boko Haram has seized territory in northeastern Nigeria as part of a five-year insurgency to carve out an Islamist state. Around 10,000 people were killed last year.

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the weekend postponed elections until March 28 due to “security concerns” over Boko Haram’s insurgency.

Suicide bomber kills five at Gombe market

A suicide bomber killed at least five people and wounded 11 on Friday near a market in Gombe.

“It was a suicide bombing,” said Saidu Ahmed Minin, head of operation of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Gombe.

“Six people were killed including the bomber and 11 others were injured. We evacuated them to the hospital.”

Witnesses said the blast went off at 7:25 pm in the packed market neighbourhood of Kasuwar Arawa.

“The bomber went into the crowd of people waiting to recharge their telephones” at a public charging station “and then set off the explosive,” taxi driver Idris Babandada told AFP by telephone. “The explosion shook the whole neighbourhood.”

No one claimed immediate responsibility for the attack but Boko Haram militants are increasingly powerful in the Northeast and Gombe has been hit by several suicide bombers recently, most of them at bus stations and near military installations.

An aid worker in Gombe said that the injured were being treated by aid volunteers and nurses, because doctors in the city were on strike.

Suicide bomber kills self, three others in Gombe

No fewer than 20 people were injured and four, including the bomber, died in an explosion around 7:00pm on Tuesday at Kasuwan Mata area of Gombe, the Gombe State capital.

Besides the bomber, an adult and a little boy died while another minor gave up among the 21 injured victims receiving treatment at the Gombe Specialist Hospital.

The suicide bomber was said to have glided and fell with his explosive – laden motorcycle thereby instigating the blast close to the main entrance of Gombe State University in Tudun Wada quarters.

It could not be ascertained whether the suspected bomber was headed for the nearby anti-Kalare post or a mosque which are a few meters apart.

Eyewitnesses said he (the suicide bomber) arrived a little bit earlier as he met Muslim worshippers preparing for the evening prayers.

Spokesman of the Gombe State Police Command, Deputy Superintendent Fwaje Atajiri said the suicide bomber failed in his attempt to unleash mayhem on worshipers at a mosque in Gombe metropolis.

“The incident happened around ‘Kasuwan Mata’ area of Gombe, a few minutes to 7pm. He was targeting a mosque but the explosives went off before he could reach his target,” he said.

He said hoodlums attempted to take advantage of the situation to loot nearby shops but were contained by security operatives.

  • Boko Haram: 10- year- old suicide bomber kills 20

Boko Haram: 10- year- old suicide bomber kills 20

The terror sect, Boko Haram, yesterday let loose a 10 year old female suicide bomber in Maiduguri, killing at least 20 people.

Scores of others were injured in the explosion at a crowded poultry market in the Borno State capital at about 12.20pm.

Two other suicide bombers, arrested by police in a vehicle, blew themselves up in the main police station in Potiskum, in neighbouring Yobe State.

The Maiduguri market was targeted twice in a week by female bombers late last year.

Civilian vigilante Ashiru Mustapha said the powerful explosion rocked the market when it was packed with traders and shoppers, adding that the girl “was about 10 years old”.

A Red Cross official, who declined to give his name, said: “We have so far evacuated 10 bodies to the mortuary at the (Borno) State Specialist Hospital.”

Borno State police spokesman Gideon Jubrin said yesterday that the girl suicide bomber let off an improvised explosive device near the market.

A security source, said the suicide bomber’s body was “completely shattered.”

“Because of the high calibre explosive she strapped to her body, the upper part of her body was flung apart and found about 500 metres away,” the source said.

The explosion triggered a fresh wave of panic in the city, coming so soon after Wednesday’s massacre of residents in the fishing town of Baga by Boko Haram.

Up to 2000 people are feared killed in the attack during which the insurgents also seized the military base in the town.

Amnesty International called the attack the deadliest massacre since the sect launched its terror six years ago.

The Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans (CANAN) shared the AI’s position and wondered what the rest of the world is “waiting for before taking drastic actions.”

The group, in a statement, said the Baga massacre and last week’s terror attack in France “deserve the attention of all people of goodwill across the world.”

It added: “The numbers are adding up fast and it is becoming clearer and clearer that the Nigerian governments both federal and states are failing resoundingly in their responsibility to protect innocent lives and prevent these mass atrocities from going forward. These atrocities are increasingly becoming worse and worse as the times go by. He who feels it knows it!

“According to the United Nations, Responsibility to Protect doctrine, while the duty to prevent and halt genocide and mass atrocities lies first and foremost with the state, yet “the international community has a role that cannot be blocked by the invocation of sovereignty.” Specifically, that doctrine says “sovereignty no longer exclusively protects states from foreign interference.”

“Earlier this (last) week on Thursday, the United Nations Security Council in New York was briefed about the worsening situation in the northeastern parts of Nigeria. The conclusion of the report put before the council was that “Counter-Insurgency measures have failed to provide adequate protection of civilians in Northeastern Nigeria.”

“At this point, the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans, CANAN, may be left with no other options than to ally with other frontline groups in the international community regarding the situation and formally ask the UN to invoke the Responsibility to Protect doctrine as enshrined in article 1 of the Genocide Convention regarding the areas in North-Eastern Nigeria that is being ravaged by terrorists.”

In Potiskum, Yobe State residents said two suicide bombers, arrested by police in a vehicle, blew themselves up yesterday in the town’s  main police station .

A death toll was not immediately available.

Yobe is one of three Northeastern states frequently attacked by Boko Haram.

On Friday evening, the army repelled an attack by insurgents in Yobe State capital, Damaturu.

  • My Boko Haram story, by 13-yr old ‘suicide bomber’

My Boko Haram story, by 13-yr old ‘suicide bomber’

A 13-year old would-be female bomber has confessed to being lured into the Boko Haram sect’s suicide squad with the promise of making it to heaven.

In a chilling account, Zarau Babangida, who hails from Damaturu, Yobe State, said her parents, who live in Bauchi State, enlisted her into the sect.

Zarau spoke to reporters in police custody after being arrested along with her accomplice.

She would have detonated another bomb during the December 10 twin-explosions in Kano’s Kantin Kwari market but for a change of mind. Ten people were reported dead in that blast; nine others were injured.

    Zarau spoke to reporters yesterday.

Her story: “When my parents took me to the Boko Haram training camp in Bauchi, I did not have an idea what they wanted me to go and do. But when we got there, one of the trainers asked me whether I wanted to go to paradise. I replied in the affirmative. He then told me that I had an assignment to carry out in Kano. After the necessary training, he told me that three of us (all female) would travel to Kano to execute the assignment, saying after executing the assignment, we would then be entitled to make it to paradise.

“When we got to Kano, they took us straight to Kantin Kwari market. When it was time for the execution, the two other girls took their position. We all had the bombs concealed in our dresses because we were wearing hijab. The others detonated their bombs, but I vehemently refused to ignite mine. But I was injured on my left leg from the explosion.

“Due to the injury, I shouted for help, the commercial tricycle operator, who sympathised with me, took me to Dawanau, where I resided with my parents. However, I removed the concealed bomb in my body and left it on the seat of the tricycle.

“The tricycle operator returned to confirm that I was the one carrying the bomb and he alerted security agents. I was arrested at the hospital where I was being treated.”

Kano Police Commissioner Mr Aderenle Shinaba, who was with heads of other security agencies in the state, said the arrest of the 13-year old would-be bomber and her accomplice was as a result of the synergy among the outfits.

Shinaba confirmed that the girl was arrested at the hospital. He cautioned against insinuations that people of particular ethnic group are behind the bombings.

  • Woman suicide bomber kills 30 in Bauchi town

Woman suicide bomber kills 30 in Bauchi town

A zare, Bauchi State’s second largest town, was bombed again yesterday by a woman suspected to be Boko Haram agent.

Sources said no fewer than 30 people were killed in the explosion which took place at about 5:20 pm at Kasuwar Jagwal, a popular area in the town. But the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) last night quoted the police as saying that 12 people died in the blast with 64 others injured.

It was the second explosion in the town in one week and the seventh in recent years. Residents are now gripped with fear. In last week’s blast around First Bank, 21 people died and over 30 injured.

Many of those affected by yesterday’s blast were mostly telephone handsets and accessories sellers. Some of them are women.

An eyewitness told our reporter on the telephone from Azare that he counted 30 bodies. Many people were injured. The dead and injured were taken to the Azare Federal Medical Centre.

Azare, which is 283 kilometres from state capital Bauchi, is the headquarters of Katagum Emirate Council and Katagum local government.

Bauchi Police spokesman Haruna Mohammed did not respond to several calls.

The female suicide bomber blew herself, witnesses said.

“A suicide bomber came into the market as it was closing and blew herself up in the middle of all the merchants and their customers,” a witness said.

“I saw at least eight dead and lots of others wounded,” another witness, Alyu Habib was quoted by French News Agency (AFP).

Sources said the dismembered body of a woman believed to have detonated the bomb was picked up at the explosion site.

  • Two die as female suicide bomber strikes in school

Two die as female suicide bomber strikes in school

A suicide bomber  struck yesterday in Kotangora, Niger State, killing a student. The female bomber also died.

The Federal College of Education (FCE) Kotangora incident came 48 hours after 36 pupils of the Government Science Secondary School, Potiskum, Yobe State died in a similar incident.

Unable to get to the school hall where Distance Learning undergraduates of  the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, were writing exams, the suicide bomber died along with another female student. Four others were injured.

The bomb blast occurred around 12:30pm as the suicide bomber  was rushing towards the hall. As the bomb detonated, students scampered for their lives, jumping through the windows.

Naomi Gana, who was lucky to have finished her papers before the explosion, said:  “I saw the bomber.  I saw her running towards the library and I thank God before she got to the entrance the bomb went off. The other girl I am sure was just unlucky because she is a student who was just walking along when the bomb went off. I am still in shock. After I finished my exams, I sat under the tree, waiting for my friend. Then the bomb exploded.”

Another eye witness said the bomber might have beaten the internal security arrangement.

“The situation would have been disastrous if the suicide bomber had hit her target. If she had got to the lecture theatre where students were writing examination, the casualty would    have been unimaginable,” he said.

The suspected bomber had her lower part – from the abdomen and the legs blown off. The upper part of her body was burnt beyond recognition.

Military men and the police anti-bomb squad cordoned off the explosion site.

The Provost of the college, Dr. Nathaniel Odediran, said that a female student who was taken to the hospital with critical injuries, a 300-level undergraduate of ABU Distance Learning degree programme in the College, Miss. Fasilat Oludege, passed on at about 5pm yesterday.

“ We lost one of our female students who was initially injured in the explosion this evening, bringing the number of casualty to two.”

The Provost added: “We thank God for answering our prayers because He did not allow the enemies to succeed in carrying out their enterprise.”

Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu condemned the blast and the insurgency in the Northeast.

He described the reports that soldiers retreated from terrorists as depressing, lamenting that the military is finding it difficult to end insurgency.

Aliyu, who spoke in Minna during the fourth annual MBA International Literary Colloquium, one of the activities marking his 59th birthday, called for the security alertness and cooperation of all Nigerians.

“We need to go round houses and enlighten our people on the need for peace to reign, which will, therefore, bring an end to all these killings. We must not be partisan about security; the role of government is to provide security for people, regardless of their differences.

“I am calling on my colleagues to support the president and fight Abubakar Shekau (Boko Haram leader) and his people,” the governor said.

In the address entitled: “Leadership and National Development”, former Mozambican President Joacquim Chissano urged African leaders to address “potential trouble spots”, saying they should not “wait until it is too late”.

Chissano said: “ Early warning demands early action. Leadership is the state of mind and not position, and as a result, we should try to develop leaders in all areas of endeavours, if we truly want to change the situation on the continent.”

Niger police spokesman Ibrahim Gambari said the situation had been brought under control, with the anti-bomb squad dispatched to the scene.

Gambari said the level of casualty was limited, adding that three injured persons taken to the hospital had been discharged.

  • 82 die as suicide bomber hits Buhari’s convoy

82 die as suicide bomber hits Buhari’s convoy

The unfortunate event, clearly an assassination attempt, came from a fast moving vehicle that made many attempts to overtake my security car, but was blocked by the escort vehicle. We reached the market area of Kawo where he took advantage of our slowing down and attempted to ram into my car. He instantly detonated the bomb, which destroyed all the three cars in our convoy. Unfortunately, when I came out of my vehicle, I saw bodies littered around…

Twin bomb explosions in Kaduna, the headquarters of the old northern Nigeria killed scores of people yesterday.

Former Head of State General Muhamadu Buhari, whose convoy seemed to have been the target of the second explosion, escaped unhurt.

The Gen. who on Sunday warned President Goodluck Jonathan on the state of the nation, said it was an assassination attempt, a “clearly targeted bomb attack”.

The first explosion was on Alkali by Isa Kaita Road, where a suspected suicide bomber on a motorcycle, who is believed to be trailing a famous Islamic scholar, Sheik Dahiru Bauchi, detonated the bomb.

Kaduna Police Commissioner Umar Shehu said 25 people died in the first blast but eyewitnesses said about 32 died.

About two hours later, another explosion rocked Kawo market, close to the popular Kawo flyover. The police chief said 14 people were killed, but a Red Cross official told Reuters that over 50 people died in that explosion.

Shehu said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspected suicide bomber might have targeted Sheikh Bauchi, who had just completed the annual grand finale of his Ramadan Tafsir (lecture) at the Murtala Square.

The bombers struck at about 12.45pm while large crowds of Sheikh Bauchi’s followers, were just departing the venue of the Tafsir.

The cleric was driving through the area in an open-roof vehicle, greeting well-wishers, when he was targeted.

Followers of the renowned cleric reacted angrily, throwing stones at the security forces and accusing them of failing to protect Nigerians. The security forces retaliated by firing tear gas.

The angry supporters of the Sheikh wept profusely when they saw the huge casualty of the explosion.

An eyewitness, who identified himself as Musa Aminu, said:  “The suicide bomber was on a bike and he was desperately trying to follow the convoy of Sheik Dahiru Bauchi when the security people diverted his path. In the process, he hit a parked car and the bomb exploded.”

Gen. Buhari escaped the second explosion by the whiskers.

Gen. Buhari, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was on his way out of Kaduna to his home town, Daura, Katsina State, when the bomb exploded.

The second explosion appeared to target his motorcade. Gunmen rammed a vehicle into his convoy and fired shots at it, according to the BBC report. Three of Gen. Buhari’s bodyguards were injured.

Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the General was brought out of his Prado SUV unhurt and taken away in another vehicle.

An SUV, one of those in the APC leader’s convoy, was completely burnt down at the scene of the explosion.

The police chief said the bomber targeted a prominent Nigerian whose name he did not mention, but said 14 people died and four others injured.

However, eyewitnesses insisted that the casualty from the Kawo explosion was far more than that of Alkali Road.

At the scene of the Kawo explosion, a man disguised as a woman was arrested by soldiers. The suspect was in possession of a bag containing many mobile phone handsets.

Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero condemned the explosions which he described as an act of “cowardice” by those bent on creating tension in the state.

He imposed a 24-hour curfew within the metropolis.

In a statement by his spokesman Ahmed Maiyaki, Yero said:

“Following the unfortunate situation, a twenty four (24) hours curfew has been imposed on Kaduna metropolis with immediate effect, to enable security agencies restore normalcy.

“Enemies of peace have visited us with their ungodly venom of wanton destruction of human lives.

“This blast, coming in the Holy Month of Ramadan, is a clear indication that those behind the act have no iota of fear of God as they have none for the sanctity of human life.

“The time has come for us to eschew all our differences and confront these brazen attacks as united people.

“Those behind these attacks have no regards for whatever diversity as their victims cut across all ethnic and religious divides. It is a responsibility on all of us to unite against this common enemy,” he said.

The governor commiserated with families of victims and directed security agencies to intensify surveillance while they pursue perpetrators of the attacks.

The apex Islamic body in Northern Nigeria, Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), also condemned the explosions, saying Nigeria was becoming a theatre of bloodshed.

In a statement by its Secretary General, Dr. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, the JNI said: “We are dazzled over the news of the twin blasts in Kaduna city, which claimed the lives of many innocent Muslims in a Tafseer closing session of Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, held at Murtala Muhammad Square, Kaduna and within a short while another blast was said to have rocked Kawo in Kaduna, Kaduna State.

“We, therefore, condemn in the strongest term these repeated acts of terror being unleashed on the Muslims, in this blessed month of Ramadan.

“JNI equally sympathises with all the affected victims and also consoles the families of those who lost their lives in the unfortunate incident. May Aljannatul Firdaus be the abode of all the deceased, Amin.

“As usual, JNI calls on all authorities concerned to be more committed to their responsibilities of protecting the lives and properties of Nigerians as no development can be achieved in a situation of fear, insecurity and chaos.

“All hands must be on deck to stop these perpetual massacres of lives and properties, as Nigeria is becoming a theatre of losts of blood for no just cause, which must be stopped.

“Muslims should utilise the remaining days of Ramadan to complain to Allah, The Most Merciful, through vigorous supplications for relief, succour and ease against the evil masterminds of the nagging insecurity bedeviling our country.

“May Allah, the All-Mighty, The Compeller, The Supreme, and The All-Knowing, bring an end to this nagging evil, disgrace the perpetrators and grant us lasting peace, security, prosperity and a promising future full of happiness and development, Amin,” the statement read.
