Sultan to governors: Fish out displaced persons’ funds

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, on Monday challenged Northern states governors to fish out the whereabouts of several billions of naira collected for Internally Displaced Person (IDPs) in the region.

He said, “People are suffering, billions of naira had been collected for their welfare but what we hear every day and what we see on the pages of newspapers is very bad. It is important that this money be disbursed immediately through the state governors.”

“Whenever we meet with our political leaders, we always tell them that we are only here to advise them and that is what we are doing here and we will continue to advise them as long as it is necessary. We will continue to advise them for the good of our people especially in the Northern part of the country.

“We believe that once problems of the North are taken up from the troubled spots or the map of troubled areas in the world, we believe Nigeria will be a better place. So we intend to discuss on issues affecting the North and also the country in general.”

The Sultan spoke at the opening of the 2nd General Assembly of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council in Kaduna.

But the Governor of Adamawa State, Jibrila Bindow, charged the traditional rulers to help check influx of fake IDPs from neighbouring countries.

Sultan: Terrorism has no place in Islam

THE Sultan of Sokoto , Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, said yesterday in Ado Ekiti that Muslim youths must begin to shun membership of terror groups as violence has no place in Islam.

Besides, Muslims should make it a point of duty to fish out the bad elements in their midst.

The spiritual head of the Nigerian Muslim community spoke at the turbaning of the Grand Imam of Ekiti State, Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere Bello, as the President General of the League of Imams and Alfas in Southwest, Edo and Delta states.

Abubakar urged Sheikh Kewulere to galvanize other Islamic clerics to work together to preach against terror which is giving Islam a bad name.

The Sultan said, “We know what Islam is presently facing most especially the issue of terrorism, we know this is not an Islamic agenda and the biggest challenge facing the (new) President General is to bring all Imams, Alfas and Ulamas to brainstorm on how we can stop our children from participating in anti-Islamic activities.

“As teachers in Islamic studies, we want you to teach our children what Islam is and what Islam is not. Imagine a 10-year-old involved in suicide bombing and killing, this has no place in Islam and has no basis in our religion.

“Fish out bad elements among Muslims and have them dealt with as criminals, we have to educate our children what Islam is and what Islam is not.

“If we know any bad person among us, let us fish them out. It is a big task no doubt, we must be united as Ummah because what binds us together is Islam.

“We must work together to bring our clerics together to tackle terrorism and extremism because this is unIslamic not only in Nigeria but in other parts of the world.”

The Sultan was particularly delighted at the presence at the event of the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe, who is a Christian.

Speaking shortly after his installation, Sheikh Kewulere paid tributes to all his predecessors and expressed gratitude to his colleagues in the League in all the eight states under his domain.

He promised to justify the confidence reposed in him and build on the foundation already laid to promote Islam and inter-religious harmony.

The Asiwaju Musulumi of Yorubaland, Asiwaju Khamis Olatunde Badmus charged Kewulere, to see his new post as a trust from Allah and make the unity of Muslims a priority in the discharge of his duties.

Speaking through Senator Hamsat Bayo Salami who represented him at the event, Badmus said as the spiritual head of the Muslim in the South West, the office of President General requires that its occupant must be a promoter of peace and unity not only among the Muslims but in the whole of Nigeria and also work with Sultan of Sokoto on the promotion of peace and unity in the country.

Dignitaries at the event included  Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose represented by his wife, Feyisetan; Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko represented by his deputy, Alhaji Lasisi Oluboyo; Secretary General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede; Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Prof. Rasheed Aderinoye; Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, the Most Revd. Felix Ajakaye; former Deputy Governor of old Ondo State, Alhaji Musa Ayeni; former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Sikiru Lawal, and  the Olukare of Ikare Akoko, Oba Akadiri Momoh.

Dasuki: Fayose urges Sultan to prevail on Buhari

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has advised  the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar,  to prevail on President Buhari  not to allow abuse of human rights under his administration.

While receiving  the Sultan in his office, Fayose accused Buhari of presiding over an emerging dictatorship.

He condemned the house arrest of a Sokoto prince and former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd) which he (Fayose) described as a “flagrant abuse of the Constitution and the rule of law” by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

The governor urged Sultan to prevail on President Buhari not to allow abuse of human rights under his administration, describing Dasuki’s house arrest as an example of injustice and human rights violation under the All Progressives Congress -led government.

Dasuki is currently being probed over alleged mismanagement of N333 billion meant for the purchase of arms for the nation’s armed forces to contain the insurgency in the Northeast.

The Sultan , however ,advised leaders in the country to discharge their duties with the fear of God, and work towards unity of people of different religious and political persuasions.

The Sultan  who is also the  President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) was in Ekiti to witness the installation of the state Grand Imam, Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere Bello as the new President General of League of Imams and Alfas in Southwest, Edo and Delta States.

Abubakar charged Fayose to continue to carry the people along in his leadership role and treat all ethnic nationalities and religious organizations as equal entities,  for the state and Nigeria to move to a higher pedestal  in all spheres.

Sultan said: “As leaders, we owe it a duty to lead by example and with the fear of God. If you are a leader, it is left for you to work your way to hell or heaven. God believes strongly in leadership, that is

why people must continue to support them rather than fighting them.

“I want Governor Fayose to treat all the various nationalities and religions in  Ekiti as one. You must be just in handling their affairs. When there is injustice, no development can take place. When we are just, then there will be security in the society.

“I know that governor Fayose is well loved by the people, but he must continue to work hard for people and most importantly God to love him more.”

Fayose replied: “I take the opportunity of your visit to bare my mind on some national concerns, particularly as it affects the unlawful incarceration of the former NSA, Alhaji Sambo Dasuki.

“President Buhari has proved me right by my claims before the election that Nigeria is in the making of a dictator if he is voted into power.

“By choosing which orders of the court to be obeyed, the President has exhibited his great disdain and disrespect to the judiciary as an independent arm of government and hope of the common man.

“The continuous siege on the residence of the former NSA against a court order is a clear manifestation of fundamental human rights abuse.

“If the president flouts Court orders with impunity, judicial independence will be fatally compromised and Nigeria’s embryonic democracy is in great danger. With this act, the President has left nobody in doubt that Dasuki cannot get fair hearing.

“We hereby call on the international community to support independent human rights observers who are out to monitor former NSA’s prosecution and trial. President Buhari must honour his vow to follow due process and the rule of law.”

Sultan, governors storm Ekiti for Imam’s installation

HIstory will be made in Ekiti State tomorrow when Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere Bello will be installed as the President-General of League of Imams and Alfas in the Southwest, Edo and Delta states.

Sheikh Kewulere, as he is fondly called, is the Chief Imam of Ado-Ekiti and Grand Imam of Ekiti State. This is the first time an Ekiti indigene will occupy the pinnacle of Islamic clergy in the eight states.

The President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar is expected to preside over the installation billed to begin by 10am at Ekiti Parapo Pavillion in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

The event is a milestone and significant in the sense that Muslims are in the minority in Ekiti State and for an Ekiti Muslim to be found so worthy is worth celebrating.

Governors expected include the host, Ayo Fayose, Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo), Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Akinwumi Ambode (Lagos), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara) and Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto).

Sheikh Kewulere was born to Mallam Bello Olawale Egunjobi and Madam Rabiat Bello of the Asa Family, Odo Ado, Ado-Ekiti on  January 2, 1952 and he was named Muhammadu Jamiu.

At the age of six, he was enrolled at Ansar-Ud-Deen Primary School, Ado-Ekiti.

His parents also enrolled the little Jamiu at an Arabic/Islamic Institute, Zumuratul Diyyah Solihina, established by the renowned Islamic scholar and teacher, Sheikh Yusuf Akorede otherwise known as “Baba Akorede” (of blessed memory) in 1962.

Observing some sterling qualities possessed by Muhammadu Jamiu, Baba Akorede developed a special interest in him and this young disciple became the confidant of his master.

Being a man of God, Baba Akorede had the premonition of what the little Jamiu would become in future and prophesied that when his community would be in search of a good leader, Jamiu would be the person to be sought after.

Another great scholar from whom Jamiu drank from his fountain of Islamic knowledge was Sheikh Badrudeen Ami of Ami Arabic Training Centre, Iwo, Osun State, who also corroborated the prophecy when he told Jamiu that: “you are a child with great sign (of Allah)”.

After Baba Akorede passed on in 1976, Sheikh Kewulere was also under the tutelage of Sheikh Agbarigidoma in Ilorin, Kwara State and later at Imam Training Centre, Alakoro, Idumota, Lagos in 1983 among several others.

Imam Kewulere Bello had his first marriage in 1974 when he was under Sheikh Akorede and this marriage and subsequent ones were blessed with wonderful children.

The President General-designate had a stint in transportation business between 1978 and 1979 and in 1979, he was approached to become the                                          Chief Imam of Ado-Ekiti, an offer he promptly rejected.

However, against his wish but in fulfillment of Allah’s wish, he gave in 1981.

On January 1, 1983, he proceeded to Lagos on a three-month course at the Ansar-Ud-Deen Imam Training Centre, Alakoro, Idumota, Lagos, where he obtained a certificate and thereafter returned to Ado Ekiti.

Sheikh Kewulere was turbaned and installed as the 6th Chief Imam of Ado-Ekiti on  August 3, 1985.

The ceremony was performed by Imam Yusuf Olatunji Ogunlayi, the Chief Imam of Ikole-Ekiti,.

Upon creation of Ekiti State in 1996, Muslims in Ekiti land unanimously appointed Sheikh Kewulere as the Grand Imam of Ekiti State, thus assuming the exalted and enviable headship of Imams in Ekiti State.

Baba Imam, as he is also addressed, has since performed excellently well to the admiration of all and sundry until recently when another big feather was added to his cap.

Sheikh Kewulere engages in such hobbies as reading and listening to good recitation of the Holy Qur’an. He is widely travelled and had performed the holy pilgrimage to Makkah and Medinah several times.

How to tackle terrorism, by Sultan of Sokoto

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, yesterday gave some tips on how to tackle terrorism in the country.

Nigeria must focus on rebuilding the socio-economic life of citizens, particularly those  living in the Northeast where terrorism thrives, he said after he was installed as the Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI) at the institution’s 67th Foundation Day in the Oyo State capital.

Reeling out staggering data on the deplorable state of socio-economic life in the North, Alhaji Abubakar said there were more than 2.5 million out-of-school children (popularly called Almajiri) in some states in the North.

He explained that the figure is higher than those enrolled in school in some states.

In the Sultan’s view, poor socio-economic factors help terrorism thrive because the youth are not gainfully engaged and their minds are not developed.

According to him, insurgency has left over two million people displaced, with implications on health, social infrastructure and security.

To overcome the challenge, the UI Chancellor said Nigeria must focus on increasing school enrollment, training youths in acquisition of skills and opening up opportunities for skilled labour.

Emphasising that terrorism has nothing to do with Islam, Alhaji Abubakar described terrorists as “deluded individuals who are hiding under religion to perpetrate evil”.

He urged the UI to lead in the training of youths in character building and researches that can expose practical steps in dealing with society’s challenges.

The Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ayelari Emilolorun , who read the valedictory speech of the outgoing VC, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said the institution awarded 456 doctorate degrees from 12 faculties and institutes this year. According to him, the figure is unrivalled in Africa.

He said his administration focused on staff welfare, infrastructural development and security to enable the university deliver on its mandate of quality training and research.

Adewole said there were already 219 linkages with several universities all over the world with 19 others in the pipeline.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who was represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, stressed the need to move energy source thermal to solar, saying the government was arranging with some companies in the United Kingdom (UK) to achieve solar energy production.

Buhari added that there were plans for self-sustenance in rice production to achieve food security instead of relying on importation.

The main focus of his administration, he said, is the common man.

Buhari urged universities to be sensitive to developments around the world to enable them key into them to make better impacts.

The Sultan and Emeritus Prof. Ayo Banjo were awarded honorary doctoral degrees.

After its founding in 2002, Boko Haram’s increasing radicalization led to a violent uprising in July 2009 in which its leader was summarily executed. Its unexpected resurgence, following a mass prison break in September 2010, was accompanied by increasingly sophisticated attacks, initially against soft targets, and progressing in 2011 to include suicide bombings of police buildings and the United Nations office in Abuja. The government’s establishment of a state of emergency at the beginning of 2012, extended in the following year to cover the entire northeast of Nigeria,

Rule of law, a requirement for progress – Sultan

Unless Nigerians totally embrace the principles and respect for rule of law, the country cannot make landmark progress as a nation.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, stated this in Sokoto Thursday.

He said any society that seeks to jettison the culture and respect for rule of law will continue to be doomed.

“Any society that has no respect for the‎ rule of law is doomed,” he maintained.

The Sultan, who spoke‎ at the opening of the 8th Annual National conference of the Muslim Lawyers’  Association of Nigeria ( MULAN), pointed out that any society without respect for the rule of law, justice, equity, fairness and equality will fail in all its pursuits.

A book titled: ‘’ Islamic Law and Contemporary Issues in Nigeria,’’ authored by the association in honour of the Sultan, was also presented to the public at the event.

Abubakar further challenged the association to strive to be financially independent, publicize its activities and also voice its views on some current national issues.

Sultan, others seek probe of Saudi tragedy

The Sultan of  Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar lll, and President General of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) yesterday told Saudi authorities to probe the stampede in which 768 pilgrims died in Mina during the stoning of the devil.

Iran, which lost over 100 of its citizens in the stampede and the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), also yesterday insisted on a probe of the incident.

The Sokoto State Pilgrims Welfare Agency confirmed the death of Sheikh Liman Dan-Ata, the Chief Imam of the Sultan Abubakar III Jumaa’at Mosque in Sokoto.

Also dead are the immediate Caretaker Chairman of Illela Local Government Area of the state, Alhaji Bello Gidan-Hamma, his mother, step-mother and two wives.

The Media Assistant to the agency, Alhaji Farouk Umar, said yesterday that many pilgrims from the state were still missing.

Nine other pilgrims from the state were confirmed dead on Saturday by Imam Imam,  Governor Aminu Tambuwal’s spokesman.

The Sultan expressed sadness over the number of victims and prayed for the repose of their souls.

“This is one tragedy too many,” the Sultan said in a statement signed on his behalf by the Secretary-General of JNI, Dr. Khalid Abubakar-Aliyu, in Kaduna.

The Sultan expressed heart-felt condolences with the families of the victims of the tragedy, calling on the Muslim Ummah never to be deterred but remain steadfast despite the challenges confronting them.

“It was gratifying that the Saudi authorities were doing all they could to make the hajj operation smooth the way it should be,” the JNI noted, adding that “ investigation into what led to the tragedy is necessary”.

[ad id=”403656″]He maintained that an investigation into the stampede has become necessary to guard against a reccurrence.

The statement added: “With humility and total submission to Allah the Exalted, the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), under the leadership of His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto and the Muslim President-General, condoles with heavy heart with Muslim ummah (Community) over the Jamarat stampede pilgrims while completing the rites of Hajj in one of the tragedy, which led to the loss of several lives of sites of the worship in Saudi Arabia.

“This is one tragedy too many. JNI shares the pains and worries the families of the affected victims are passing through and them to patiently persevere, and put their trust in Allah.

“Despite this and other painful trials, our faith in Allah is unshaken. Therefore, we call on each and every Muslim to remain focused and firm in his/her belief and engage in acts that will bring them closer to Allah.

“It is indeed gratifying that the Saudi authorities have been doing everything humanly possible to make the Hajj as smooth as it should be, but we still call on them to investigate the Jamarat stampede in

order to avert future occurrence.” JNI asserted.

The leader of the Shiite Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Shiekh Ibaheem El-Zakzaky, blamed the tragedy on the Saudi prince’s convoy, which reportedly caused panic among the pilgrims.

He said the prince and others fingered in the tragedy should be sentenced to death.

El-Zakzaky, who spoke in Zaria at the weekend, argued that the management of the hajj was not the exclusive preserve of the Al-Saud royal family.

“The Al-Saud family cannot be trusted when its hands are soaked with Muslims’ blood in countries such as Yemen, Bahrain, Iraq and Syria,” El-Zakzaky said.

He insisted that the Al-Saud prince be punished by death “as they caused the death of thousands of innocent pilgrims”.

The cleric, who addressed his faithful as part of activities to mark the Sallah, said:”For the government of Saudi Arabia to blame pilgrims for killing themselves is ridiculous and a form of human degradation, which is also criminal.

“They are saying this in order to cover up the real cause of the tragedy. If the Saudi government could describe the crane tragedy at the precincts of the holy Ka’abah as accidental, we wonder why the crane will be left hanging over the heads of millions of pilgrims, and only to crash on them on September 11.

“The Saudi authorities cannot fool the world or exonerate themselves from the heinous crime and monumental tragedy as the world knows who is killing their brethren in Yemen, Bahrain, Iraq and Syria.”

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani yesterday used a speech at the United Nations (UN) to call for an investigation into Thursday’s stampede at the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

The incident is the deadliest to hit the Hajj in 25 years, with 769 people dead, more than 130 of them from Iran.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir accused the Iranians of playing politics with a tragedy.

The country’s most senior cleric defended the authorities, saying the stampede was “beyond human control”.

King Salman has ordered a safety review into the disaster.

Mr Rouhani described the crush as “heart-rending”. As well as the fatalities, 934 people were injured.

But Mr Jubeir, who is also in New York to attend the UN General Assembly, said: “I believe that the Iranians should know better than to play politics with a tragedy that has befallen people who were performing their most sacred religious duty.”

Iran’s outrage also has political motivations, as its battle with Saudi Arabia for regional influence sharpens week by week.

  • Hajj: Sultan asks Saudi authorities to improve safety

Hajj: Sultan asks Saudi authorities to improve safety

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, on yesterday in Sokoto, urged Saudi authorities to henceforth provide improved safety measures during the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

The Sultan spoke on the sidelines of the presentation of the report of a technical committee set up by him to look into the state of the education sector in the state.

He regretted that the stampede at Muna on Wednesday led to the death of no fewer than 1,000 pilgrims and injured over 800 others, while many more were still missing.

‘’The tragedy had affected several countries of the world, Nigeria in general and Sokoto state in particular.

‘’Some local governments in Sokoto State like Illela, Binji, Gwadabawa and others were affected by the tragedy, although the actual casualty figures are still being ascertained by Saudi Arabian and Nigerian authorities, ‘’ he said.

Abubakar, who is the life National Amirul Hajj, described the deaths and injuries caused by the stampede as “collective loss’’.

He said that his committee was assessing the situation and would appropriately advise the federal government on the incident.

‘’We will appropriately advise the Federal Government of Nigeria to partner the Saudi Government on how to improve safety of pilgrims during the annual pilgrimage.

‘’The tragedy was an act of God but we will render useful advice to the federal government on how to improve the safety of the pilgrims.

‘’This is necessary to ensure the conduct of hitch-free Hajj exercise annually,” he said.

The Sultan condoled with the families and Government of Nigeria as well as other countries affected by the tragedy.

  • Sultan’s call on Buhari to jail looters

SIR: The news stories in national newspapers on Sultan’s call to jail looters and seize their assets, published on August 18, 2015, made an interesting reading.

In the story, our respectable leader, Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, said President Muhammadu Buhari “should send those who loot the treasury to jail”.

I also watched the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) network news of August 17, 2015 and saw the Sultan making the same call.

To be honest with our Sultan, what he said at the Abuja Security Summit was what all Nigerians have been calling for: Jail the looters and punish the corrupt!

However, I am afraid that if President Buhari is to dig deeper, many traditional and religious leaders may be among those to be called to answer questions as some of them are now AGIP (any government in power).

There was a story published by an online newspaper, which said a prominent traditional ruler mounted pressures on the leadership of the Seventh House of Representatives to drop the probe of the former Minister of Petroleum, Mrs. Diezani AlisonMadueke, over private jets’ saga, among others. If this allegation is true, then there is a problem.

There was also an allegation that former President Goodluck Jonathan approved sales of scrap helicopters to a certain northern traditional ruler at a ridiculous price. Jonathan also allegedly approved the allocation of an oil block to this same traditional ruler through a middleman. The deal was allegedly facilitated by the former petroleum minister.

The proceeds of the oil block were allegedly used to purchase a mansion located at Maitama District Abuja.

The traditional ruler also allegedly mounted pressure on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) leadership to steer clear from the graft investigations in the petroleum industry and Diezani in particular.

Some traditional rulers have started creating Foundations, where politicians and public servants, particularly in the last administration, were coerced into donating money.

The Sultan’s clarion call is expedient because fighting corruption is beyond “show off” or “notice me.” Nobody should be spared in this fight against graft.

We are happy that Buhari is bent on “killing corruption before it kills Nigeria”.
