Boko Haram has no Islamic bais, says Sultan

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar has urged Muslim youths to desist from actions that will continue to compromise the security of the nation.

Alhaji Abubakar who is the President- General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs stated this at the formal opening of the annual Islamic Vacation Course, IVC of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, MSSN, Southern Zone held at Km 53, Lagos/ Ibadan Express way.

Alhaji Abubakar who was represented by the Executive Secretary, Muslim Ummah of South-West Nigeria, MUSWEN said Muslim youths should resist temptation from anyone to commit any act that would lead to violence as Islam remained a religion of peace.

“ We have said it times without number that any act that breeds violence like the one being exhibited by Boko- Haram has no basis in Islam. As you are aware, our religion, Islam stands for peace as its name denotes. So let us remain peaceful always, so that we may live a peaceful life here and be accommodated in the home of peace in the life to come.”

In a keynote address, the National President, MSSN, Mallam Sirajudeen Abd-Azeez enjoined the federal government to find a lasting solution to the problem of insurgency which continued to threaten the unity of the country.

“ The once great and giant nation is at the verge of collapse. It is no more news that terrorism is on the rampage taking over our lands on a daily basis. We want to reiterate that Mr. President should address the nation on why the country is under siege by the terrorists. Why have the insurgents continued to beat the nation’s military arsenals despite the billions of dollars voted for security? Why have the terrorists become stronger even after a year when some States in the North- East have come under partial emergency rule”.

Mallam AbulAzeez also called on the President to put a stop to the threat by his kinsmen to unleash terror if next year’s election was not in his favour.

“Different ethnic militia are threatening they will let loose if their candidates are not elected. The worst threat is coming from the Niger- Delta Militants who have been threatening to cause violence should their tribe-man is not returned for second time”.

He questioned the rationale behind the sentencing of about a hundred soldiers for demanding sophisticated equipment to fight the terrorists.

“Why are these unfortunate warriors being tried secretly or secret trial of soldiers not against their fundamental human rights and spirit of democracy? Why is it that for the first time, Nigerian army that have been celebrated for successful peace keeping mission in many African countries are now rebellious and some have to be sentenced to death for making legitimate demands”.

The National Legal Adviser of All Progressive Congress, APC, Dr Muiz Banire urged Muslims to always demand for their rights in legitimate manner.

“Pro-activeness is very essential, don’t ask for anything special, ask for equal opportunities with others”.

Represented by the Secretary General of JNI, Dr. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, the Nigerian Muslims leader blamed the military, saying that It is sad and an unfortunate that Nigerian Security Forces only surface after the deadly attacks are lunched and terrorise an already terrorised people by installing road blocks and searching homes and business premises.

According to him, “Nigeria’s sovereignty has been threatened as a so called ‘Islamic Caliphate’ has been curved out of her by the insurgents. An unfortunate, worrisome and embarrassing dimension has recently been added to the scenarios – that of the way soldiers take to their heels and abandon their bases, arms, ammunition and other military hardware on the approach of the insurgents.”

“JNI condemns these heinous attacks in the strongest terms and once again calls on the Federal Government of Nigeria, with the loudest voice, to wake up to its fundamental and obligatory responsibility of protecting lives and properties of Nigerians; especially in the North East where the insurgency is most endemic.”

  • We’re worried by insecurity, says Sultan

We’re worried by insecurity, says Sultan

Monarchs from the 19 northern states, under the aegis of the Northern Traditional Council, converged yesterday on Kaduna to deliberate on the region’s challenges.

Their leader, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, said they were worried by insecurity and underdevelopment in their domain.

He said: “Whoever has been following the trend in the Northeast in the last two years will understand why we are worried. If other people are not worried, we are worried. We believe we have to take our worries, cries and recommendations for possible solutions to these challenges to Mr. President and believe he will listen to us.”

The meeting was convened barely 24 hours after Boko Haram insurgents reportedly installed two emirs in Gwoza and Danboa, Borno State.

The Sultan said: “We are meeting this morning as chairmen of the Councils of Chiefs from various states and as leaders of our people at various levels. As traditional leaders, we are worried about happenings in Northern states, especially insecurity in the Northeast, as well as lack of economic development.

“We limited this meeting to chairmen because we believe they must have consulted with other traditional representatives before coming here and we believe they would pass the message down to other members of this large assembly.

“As fathers, we have taken the cries of our children to Mr. President. We should look at what we can do individually and collectively to bring peace to our great country.

“The North is part of this country and being the larger part, we have so much at stake. There is need to stabilise the North for the country to develop. We assure the public that we are committed to peace and the unity of this country. We are committed to justice being accorded every individual.

“We will, therefore, continue to call on our leaders at all levels to ensure justice is done in the way they handle the affairs of the people God entrusted them with. We are not unaware of the developments in some of our towns, most especially Bama, Gwoza, Danbua and Michika.

“We assure all that we are concerned and, Insha Allah, we will find solutions to these problems and others facing our country. We cannot do so unless we are united, and that is why we are meeting so that we can speak with one voice and solve these problems.

“We assure you that before the year runs out, we will summon a large assembly of this council, where we have hundreds of traditional rulers, so that we can hear more from individuals.”

The meeting was attended by the Shehu of Borno, Garbai El-Kanemi; the Emir of Kano, Mohammad Sanusi III; Etsu Nupe Yahaya Abubaker; Gbong Gwom Jos Jacob Gyang; Attah of Igala Idakwo Ameoboni II and the Emir of Zazzau, Dr. Shehu Idris, among others.
