  • Auto crash claims Anambra FRSC boss

    The Anambra State sector commander, Federal Road Safety Corps Mr Sunday Ajayi is dead.

    Ajayi was said to have died in an auto crash Saturday morning around Agbor, Delta State.

    According to sources, the Sector commander was on his way from Kwara state, where he attended a relation’s wedding.

    “He died on the highway leading to Agbor approaching Asaba the Delta state capital.

    A message from the Corps Whatsaap group in South East, said, “His driver, a senior marshal, Raji survived and is in the hospital but Sunday couldn’t make it. May his soul rest in peace.

    “Ajayi who participated in the FRSC football competition yesterday and handed over prizes was full of life before his untimely death.”

    The FRSC flag at the command headquarters in Awka, was seen lowered possibly as symbol of respect for his death.

    The command’s Public Relations Officer, Ufiem Egim confirmed the report, but said the command was yet to come up with a formal report detailing the cause of his death.

    It would be recalled that Ajayi had noted that speed was responsible for more than 50% crashes on Nigeria roads.

    His words, “This is more noticeable during ‘Ember Months’ when there are higher commuter movements across the nation (before, during and after the end of year festivities).”

    Convicts 30 over traffic offences in Anambra

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has charged the clergy and other religious leaders to always include road safety tips in their sermons to ensure the message permeated all nooks and crannies of the society.

    The State Sector Commander of the Corps, Mr Sunday Ajayi who stated this in Awka, said regular stressing of such messages would further increase safety consciousness among motorists and other road users.

    He disclosed that thirty persons have been convicted by the Mobile Court of the Anambra State Command of for various traffic offences.

    He said the penalties of the convicts depended on the gravity of the offences committed.

    Assuring that the Command would leave no stone un-turned in its effort to ensure sanity on the highways, Ajayi cautioned motorists against acts capable of causing carnage on the roads.

    The Sector commander underscored the need for them to always ensure their vehicles were in good condition before embarking on any journey.

    He said, “The command will deploy its officers and men to all flash points across the State as part of efforts in reducing gridlock on the highways, especially during this yuletide.

    “We will also carry our campaign on road safety measures to all the twenty-one local government areas of the State, in addition to increasing its campaigns on both print and electronic media.”

    Ajayi commended the State government, individuals, groups and co-operate bodies, for their support to the Command, calling for its sustenance.

  • Woman dies, six injured in Anambra auto crash

    A middle-aged woman on Thursday, lost her life while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a fatal accident along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, Anambra State.

    The accident which occurred at about 5.30 pm, close to the Anambra State government house, involved a commercial bus with registration number AWK 166 XX and a Toyota Camry car with registration number, FGG 28 LN.

    An eye witness, who identified herself as Chiamaka Ugo, said the Toyota Camry somersaulted into a nearby drainage after ramming into the bus.

    She said the victims were rushed to hospital by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) who arrived the scene shortly after the accident took place.

    Confirming the incident, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in the State, Mr Sunday Ajayi, said three of the injured persons were taken to a nearby hospital in Awka.

    He however said three others in very critical condition were conveyed with an ambulance belonging FRSC to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi.

    Ajayi, who blamed the accident on wrongful overtaking and over speeding, appealed to motorists to exercise caution while plying the highway.

  • FRSC cautions dealers against selling fake spare parts

    The Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC ) in Anambra has advised motor spare parts dealers to desist from selling fake spare parts to motorists in order curtail road accidents.

    The Sector Commander, Mr Sunday Ajayi, gave the advice during a safety campaign tour at the New Spare Parts market in Nkpor, Idemili Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday.

    Ajayi attributed usage of fake spare parts as factors responsible for most vehicular accidents.

    He advised the traders to always sell genuine parts.

    He said that the dealers were critical stakeholders in ensuring safety on the nation’s roads.

    The sector commander said that the agency would extend the campaign to other major stakeholders in the state to sensitise them to the need to key into the campaign.

    He said that if stakeholders could collaborate and check factors that caused road accidents, the country would be better for it.

    He appealed to leadership of the traders to key into the commission’s drive to flush out traders of fake spare parts in the state.

    The FRSC official also advised the participants on the need to adhere to safety rules and obey other necessary safety codes while driving.

    He urged vehicle owners to first attend driving school before driving, pointing out that most road accidents on the roads were caused by human beings and were avoidable.

    The Chairman of the Traders Union in the market, Chief Aloysius Ozokwelu, lauded the sector commander for the enlightenment campaign.

  • FRSC arrests, prosecutes over 5,000 traffic offenders

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra on Friday said it had apprehended and prosecuted more than 5,000 persons for various traffic offences in the first quarter of 2018.

    The Sector Commander in the state, Mr Sunday Ajayi, disclosed this in an interview with the News men in Onitsha.

    Ajayi said that the command also prosecuted over 100 offenders for various offences at a mobile court session during the Easter celebration across the state.

    The commander said that the most prevalent traffic offences committed by the offenders included drivers’ license violation, overloading, non-use of seat belt and failure to install speed limiting device.

    He said that the arrests, especially during the Easter celebration, were part of measures aimed at raising the consciousness of motorists on safety issues on the highway.

    Ajayi, who noted an increase in accidents within the period, blamed it on speed, mechanical problems and environmental factors.

    He warned motorists to obey traffic rules and endeavour to put their vehicles in order before setting out on any journey.

    The sector commander said the corps would intensify its public enlightenment and advocacy programmes in collaboration with stakeholders to reduce accidents on the highway.

    Ajayi commended security agencies in the state for collaborating with the corps in its operations.

    He appealed to motorists plying the state to cooperate with the corps for the safety of all road users.

    Anambra inaugurates monthly road walk for workers, residents

    The Ministry of Sports and Youths Entrepreneurship in Anambra has inaugurated a monthly road walk for workers and residents in the state.

    The exercise, supported by the Anambra Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission ( FRSC ), was led by Mr Harry Udu, the Head of Service in the state on Wednesday.

    Uju Nwogu, Commissioner for Sports and Youth Entrepreneurship, joined some senior civil servants and some residents in the state on the road walk on the major roads in Awka, the state capital.

    Nwogu said the monthly exercise was part of the activities of the ministry aimed at raising awareness on mental and physical alertness of workers.

    She said that obesity resulting from sedentary lifestyles of people was responsible for the frequent visits to hospitals over minor ailment and heart attacks.

    The commissioner also said it was targeted toward enhancing the physical well-being of the residents of the state and engenders greater productivity of workers.

    She said the ministry would make staff of government in the local governments to hold their own exercise in subsequent editions as all workers could not come to Awka for the programme.

    “This is a monthly jogging and walking, a programme of the Ministry of Sports and Youths Entrepreneurship for all workers and residents of Anambra.

    “We want to encourage physical exercise to keep fit because a healthy man is a wealthy man; it is only a healthy man that can be productive.

    “Again, it is important because it drives away illnesses like cancer, high blood pressure, heart attack and other related illnesses; the psychomotor of workers is also sharpened,’’ she said.

    Meanwhile, Sunday Ajayi, Sector Commander of the FRSC who participated in the exercise, said it was a welcome development.

    Ajayi said the FRSC would provide all logistics support within its powers to enable it succeed, adding that keeping fit was good for safety on the road.

    “I want to say that health is wealth as they say, what has happened today is a landmark event and I thank the state government for approving this exercise.

    “I foresee positive outcome after this exercise in terms of productivity of workers, the FRSC has always collaborated with the state government and we shall work with the ministry of sports on this programme.

    “Fatigued people are advised not to drive, sick people are advised not to drive, you need exercise to drive those things away,’’ he said.

    Earlier, Udu said that road walk was not just for workers in Anambra, but the entire citizenry.

    The head of service said that even though the inauguration was symbolic, the people of the state were expected to engage in physical exercise at the individual levels on daily basis.

    He said the monthly programme was a ministerial duty which was in line with the rules of civil service, and encouraged workers to turn out in large numbers whenever they were called out to exercise.

    “It should not be a monthly affair, individuals should work out their plans for daily exercise and it is not for workers only, but the entire people.

    “This will improve the thinking process, metal alertness and strength of our people both those in civil service and those that are in business, the state government is encouraging people to keep fit.

    “This is part of the awareness, we will ensure that those outside Awka also benefit from this exercise, people can gather at the local government field and exercise for some minutes,’’ he said.

    Court docks man over cell phone theft

    A 29-year-old man, Akinola Emmanuel, was on Monday arraigned in an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a Tecno W 4 cell phone.

    Emmanuel is facing a two-count charge on theft and break-in.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Ajayi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Sept. 30 at about 2:00 p.m., at Fan Milk Street, Ajegunle in Osogbo.

    Ajayi said the accused unlawful entered the apartment of one Ogunleye Aderinsola and stole a Tecno W4 mobile phone before he was tracked and arrested.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 412 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol.11 Laws of Osun, 2003.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Mariam Oloyode, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 and two sureties in like sum.

    Oloyode said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and with evidence of tax payments.

    He also ordered that the sureties must provide two passports photographs, attached with an affidavit of means.

    The case was adjourned until Nov. 2 for mentioned.

    Court remands man for murder, cultism

    An Oshogbo Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded in prison, a 25-year-old man, Olarewaju Yusuf, over alleged murder of one Wahab Ismaila.

    Yusuf, who was also accused of belonging to the Eiye secret cult, is standing trial for conspiracy and murder, among others charges.

    The plea of the accused was not taken and the Magistrate, Mrs Habibatu Bashir, ordered that he be kept in prison custody.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Ajayi, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Aug.11 at about 12:01 a.m. at Oja Oba area of Osogbo, the Osun capital.

    Ajayi alleged that Yusuf conspired with some other persons at large to take Ismaila’s life, adding that they used a cow’s bone, a cutlass and an axe to kill him.

    He said the offence contravened Sections 64(a), 324, 316 and 516 of the Criminal Code cap 34 Vol.11 Laws of Osun, 2003.

    The case was adjourned till Oct. 25 for mention.

    Sales girl docked over N285,000 fraud

    A 21-year-old sales girl, Oluwatobi Blessing, was on Thursday arraigned in an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged N285,000 fraud.

    Blessing is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and theft.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Ajayi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Aug. 7, at Akindeko area in Osogbo, the Osun capital.

    Ajayi said that the accused conspired with two others now at large to steal N285,000 belonging to one Bunmi Dayo.

    He said that the accused was a sales girl working for the complainant and was sent to withdraw the money with an ATM card, which she did, but never delivered the money.

    The prosecutor said that the accused lied that she was attacked and dispossessed of the money.

    He said that the offences are punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol.11, Laws of Osun, 2003.

    The defendant denied committing the offences, while the magistrate, Mrs Fatima Sodamade, granted her bail in the sum of N200,000 and one surety in like sum.

    The case was adjourned until Sept. 5 for hearing.

    Man jailed one year for dangerous driving

    A 30-year-old man, Usman Saidi, was on Wednesday sentenced to one year imprisonment for driving dangerously in Osogbo, Osun.

    Saidi was, however, given an option to pay a fine of N50, 000 after pleading guilty to the offence.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Olubukola Olowolagba, ordered that the convict should be kept in Ilesha Prisons until he paid the fine or served the jail term.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Ajayi, had told court that the convict committed the offense on July 10 along Ayetoro Olosedudu Lane in Osogbo.

    The convict had faced a two-count charge of dangerous driving and not having a valid driver’s licence.

    Ajayi said that the convict drove a Bajaj motorcycle with registration number QD 865 SGB in a dangerous manner and against road traffic laws without a valid driver’s licence.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 21 (B) and 18(1) of the Road Traffic Act, Cap 113 Vol.5, Laws of Osun State, 2003.

    Counsel to the convict Mrs Abosede Aseyinka, prayed the court to temper Justice with mercy in sentencing the convict.
