Eguavoen: Why I left Sunshine Stars

FORMER Super Eagles head coach, Austin Eguavoen, has spoken for the first time about his reasons for quitting Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) club, Sunshine Stars.

Eguavoen joined the Akure club on 25 April as head of their technical crew, but spent just 46 days in charge.

The 51-year-old has now lifted the lid on the reasons behind his shock decision to leave the club after spending less than two months in charge.

“I had been out of the system for a while but a few persons who recognise my job still kept tabs on me,” Eguavoen began in an exclusive chat with supersport.com.

“I decided to give back to the country when I accepted the offer to take the NPFL Under-17 All Stars to South Africa (as head coach of the side that participated in the Gauteng Future Champions Tourney in March).

“After I returned to Nigeria with the team, I received a lot of congratulatory messages for my work in South Africa and one of those messages came from Gbenga Elegbeleye, who asked me if I’d be interested in taking charge of Sunshine Stars.

“I initially told him I was not interested but he’s a man I respect, as he has managed sports with distinction at the highest level, so I eventually agreed to take up the offer,” he said.

Eguavoen to be Named as New Head Coach for Sunshine Stars

Source revealed that Sunshine Stars has made contact with former Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen about replacing Kayode Olujohungbe as the club’s head coach.

Eguavoen, who led the Nigerian Professional Football League U-17 All Star team to the Guateng Future Champions tourney in South Africa where the team finished second behind Atletico Madrid’s U-17s, was spotted in the stands in Nnewi last Sunday when Sunshine Stars lost 2-1 to FC IfeanyiUbah in an NPFL clash.

Olujohungbe was handed a two-game ultimatum by the club management to turn things around but he lost 2-1 to FC IfeanyiUbah in Nnewi and will get sacked if he fails to record a win against Remo Stars on Sunday at the Akure Township Stadium.

Olujohungbe has managed to record five wins so far this season with Sunshine Stars who are currently placed 18th in the NPFL table with 18 points from 16 games.

Sources also indicated that Eguavoen may even be willing to accept a short-term role with the Owena Whales until the end of the season, with the option to walk away if he is unable to keep them up.

Ikefe bounces back, ready for Sunshine battle

Niger Tornadoes central defender Andrew Evans Ikefe has hit cloud nine following his recovery from knee injury sustained in Match day 8 against Enyimba at the Conference Stadium Lokoja.

Ikefe who was particularly impressive during Saturday’s training ahead of the Sunday’s tie against Sunshine stars expressed his relief at getting back to action and in a position to contribute his quota in taking the team to greater heights.

The former Kastina   united player said that he never knew the injury will sideline him for that long, as he was eager to return to action.

“Watching my mates playing while I am not in action was painful, but there was nothing I could do at that moment.

I was really in agony, but thank God I am back and fully ready to wear my club’s colors again”, he said.

He hailed the spirit of oneness among the players in the team predicting that it is sure to yield the much needed positive result.

“Niger Tornadoes is a great family, there is a sense of belonging and oneness, the love and concern shown to me I must confess led to my fast recovery,” he enthused

Missing six matches according to him was like missing an entire season even as he prays against further injuries as the team continues to push upward on league table

“I thought it was something like missing one or two matches, I couldn’t imagine missing up to six matches in a row, it was not a good experience. My prayer is that we have an injury free setting for the rest of the season”, he added.

As for match day 15 tie against Sunshine on Sunday, Ikefe hinted that it will not be taken lightly adding “we are going to be business like. We must show character, discipline, and fight on from the start to the end.  Sunshine Stars are a good side, we know that they have been in NPFL for sometimes now, but I am confident we will triumph even though we respect them”, he submitted.

Tornadoes currently occupy the 6th position on the log with 21 points in 13 matches.

  • Sunshine Stars receive Akeredolu backing

    Sunshine Stars receive Akeredolu backing

PLAYERS and officials of Sunshine Stars have received reassurances from the Executive Governor of Ondo State, Olurotimi Akeredolu, over the outstanding financial entitlements due them.

Players of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) club this week embarked on several protests to the Ondo State Government House to press home their demands.

The players even threatened to boycott their league game against Rivers United in Akure on Sunday.

Those threats will however no longer be carried out following the reassurances given to players and officials of the club by the sponsor (the Ondo State Government) led by newly sworn in governor Akeredolu.

These disclosures were made by head coach of the Akure club Kayode Olujohungbe.

“Yes (we have received reassurances from the government over our financial situation).

Sunshine Stars’ playing on empty stomachs’, owed 5 months’ pay

Sunshine Stars are “playing on empty stomachs” as they are yet to be paid salaries for the past five months.
The Akure club lost 1-0 at home to MFM on Sunday and they blamed this on the lack of motivation in the team.
The Sunshine players said they are yet to receive any salary this year, while they have also not been paid for three months last year.
“We are playing with empty stomachs. How do you expect any result when the motivation is not there?” said one of the affected players.
“I regret joining this club called Sunshine Stars. The team that defeated us at home, MFM of Lagos, are not spectacular, but our boys are not playing with the same zeal, some are committed players, while some are used to cash from the clubs they are coming from and this is affecting the team now.”

  • Olorunleke hails Sunshine Stars’ fighting spirit

Olorunleke hails Sunshine Stars’ fighting spirit

Sunshine Stars goalkeeper, Ojo Olorunleke has admitted that the team had to dig deep before beating Kano Pillars 1-0 in the Nigeria Professional Football League Week 4 encounter decided at the Akure Township Stadium on Wednesday.

Despite failing to convert from the spot in the early minute of the game, the home team kept their focus and got the winning goal courtesy of an 82nd penalty converted by Sikiru Alimi.

Olorunleke who was rested for last weekend’s 3-1 loss to Plateau United in Jos, returned to action against Masu Gida and ensured victory for the Owena Waves by making decent saves and in the process maintain a clean sheet.

Speaking with SportingLife after the encounter, the former Nigeria U20 goalkeeper expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the encounter.

“In everything you just have to give thanks to God because our hard work really worked for us. It was a tough match as you can see. What matters most is the outcome of the game. We needed the victory and God gave us.”

After missing the first penalty kick, Olorunleke said the team never gave up and believed the goal will come.

“Frankly speaking, we never expected to have penalty in the first place. We play the ball to score and penalty is also part of the game. If you are given a penalty, you can’t tell the referee you don’t want it. When we missed the penalty we didn’t give up because we knew that can derail our game plan.

“We prepared for the match and we know come what may, we are going to win whether penalty or not. But when God says it is with penalty we will get the three points, we glorify His name.”

Sunshine Stars will take on Gombe United at the Pantami Stadium in one of the NPFL Week 5 fixtures on Sunday.

  • Kano Pillars will bounce back, Isa Danladi vows

Kano Pillars will bounce back, Isa Danladi vows

Kano Pillars goalkeeper, Danladi Isa has charged his team mates to forget their 1-0 painful defeat to Sunshine Stars in the Nigeria Professional Football League Week 4 encounter decided at the Akure Township Stadium on Wednesday.

An 82nd minute rebound converted by Sikiru Alimi from penalty kick ensured that the Masu Gida left Akure empty handed and Danladi believes his team was undone by the centre referee, Ferdinand Udoh.

In a chat with SportingLife after the encounter, the former Plateau United goalkeeper said the referee should not have allowed the rebound kick to stand because “it was against the rules of the game.”

He also faulted the match officials for disallowing his team’s late equalizer.

“My message to the League Management Committee is to ensure that we start practicing the rules of the game,” begins the penalty specialist.

“One of the rules says when a player takes a penalty and the goalkeeper saves it, the same player does not have the right to play and score from the rebound, he will wait for his teammates to play it.

“The referee blew the first one and I got it. He blew the second one and I got it again and the rules says the kicker of the ball should not kick that ball anymore. So why did the referee not obey the rule. It is very very painful.

“It’s not fair for the referee to disallow that goal, there was nothing wrong with it. I believe he is just trying to help the home team. The standard of our league should have gone far better than this. If you go to South African league, even Kenya, you won’t see such things. Look at what happened today, it’s unfair.”

He however urged his team mates to shift attention to this weekend’s game against Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM).

“We now have to put the defeat behind us now and shift our focus to the next game against MFM. We will keep on fighting and see what we get from the encounter,” he told SportingLife.

  • Sunshine’s Manager Happy with Players despite loss to Enyimba

Sunshine Stars were beaten 1-0 in Calabar by former champions, Enyimba International but Coach

of the Akure Gunners, Kayode Olujohungbe had only praises for his players for executing their

    match plan to the letter.

Olujohungbe said after the game that he was angry his side lost but was not angry with his

    players.

“My team actually played according to plan and that is why I am not happy we lost.

“We played according to plan and it was just that moment where they lost concentration that the

    goal came,” Olujohungbe told www.npfl.ng

“We played well and we will just have to continue doing what we are doing in subsequent games,”

    he said.

For Gbenga Ogunbote who was having his first competitive game on the dugout with Enyimba, the

seeming struggle of the People’s Elephant to win the fixture can be attributed to the mechanics

of building a new team in a new environment.

Ogunbote told www.npfl.ng that his team struggled because it is a completely new side he is

    working with.

“You can see the players we listed are very different from the team you saw last season. It has

been very difficult working up a new team because it is a work in progress but we are happy with

    the win,” Ogunbote said.

After a very disappointing 2015/16 League season, Enyimba started the new campaign on a bright

note winning 1-0 against Sunshine Stars in Calabar.

The goal, a 21st minute effort from Ibrahim Mustapha whose innocuous effort from the edge of the

box surprisingly beat Ojo Olorunleke in goal for Sunshine Stars saw Enyimba go one goal up and

    eventually win the game.

Before Mustapha struck, Enyimba could have easily been 3-0 up as Mfon Udoh had a chance on the

17th minute when Samuel Chukwude beat the offside trap and crossed to him but his tame header

    was saved by the goalkeeper.

But as soon as the hosts scored, it seemed Sunshine Stars shook off their lethargy as Alaba

Adeniyi got a chance to draw level in the 29th minute giving Theophilus Afelokhai the option of

punching his shot out for a corner.

It was Alaba Adeniyi again two minutes later who turned provider as his cross to Samad Kadiri

    was volleyed wide.

Enyimba, however tried to end the first half on a high as Chukwude almost made it two in the

42nd minute but his header off a corner was saved off the line by Kelechi Ogor.

A minute later, Stanley Dimgba beat the off side trap, found space in the Sunshine Stars box but

    shot tamely at Olorunleke.

Chukwude was the biggest culprit of the half as he latched onto the desperate clearance by

Olorunleke in added time but facing a wide gapping net was only able to shoot wide.

Six minutes after the restart, the Enyimba gaffer threw in Ismaila Gata for Chukwude and then it

was Sunshine Stars making two changes, Sikiru Babatunde replacing Adeniyi Alaba and Sikiru Alimi

going in for Sunday Oluwadare but it was a cagey 2nd half as Enyimba sat back seemingly

satisfied with the score line while the visitors found it difficult to break the walls.

Just before Mfon Udoh was replaced with Eric Frimpong he was fouled at the edge of the Sunshine

Stars box and picked himself up to take the kick but it went wide.

At a time in the game when it seemed the fans had settled for a 1-0 score line, Ismaila Gata

almost changed the figures on the score board in the 89th minute.

He saw Olorunleke was off his line so he tried to curl the ball in from distance, but the keeper

stylishly tipped the ball over when half the fans at the stadium thought it was in.

  • Jafar joins Nasarawa United

    Jafar joins Nasarawa United

SportingLife can report that former Sunshine Stars forward Jafar Buhari has completed his move to Nasarawa United ahead of the forthcoming Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season.

Jafar, who can play outside right and left, signed a one year contract with Solid Miners till the end of the season.

It’s understood that the former Rangers Bees forward has been training with the Lafia-based outfit.

The former Bayelsa United star told SportingLife that he is happy over his new deal and he is confident that the team can win the league this season.

“Everything has been concluded over the move and I am happy over that. I love the club and the supporters. The club showed interest in me and I am happy with their plans for the club and the players. It is a good team with good ambition for great things. I am here to contribute my quotas to the development of the club. Since I came here I have seen couple of good players and I am confident that we can challenge for title this season,” Jafar disclosed to SportingLife.

Jafar started his professional career at the Rangers Bees of Kaduna before he moved to Kaduna United where he played for one season. He spent three seasons with Bayelsa United before he pitched his tent with Sunshine Stars last season.
