Kano Pillars break Sunshine Stars three years jinx in Akure

Kano Pillars broke a three-year jinx in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) when they defeated Sunshine Stars 1-0 at the Akure Township Stadium on Sunday on the Match-Day 14.

Adamu Mohammed’s 82 minutes goal was all Sai Masu Gida needed to secure maximum three points in the match and the only away win this weekend.

It was a game that saw both sides create several scoring opportunities but the visitors made use of one out of many.

The win was a boost for the four-time champions to reclaim NPFL title they surrendered to Enyimba last season.

The home side made the first attempt in the 4th minute but Pillars goalkeeper Yusuf Muhammad rushed out to clear the danger before Quadri Samad pounces in.

Yusuf made another fine save to deny Sunday Abe’s effort from a well taken free kick.

Sunshine Stars goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa was called to action in the 48th minute as his fingertip save denied Omo Johnson the chance to put Pillars ahead.

The visitors had another chance to take the lead in the 59th minute but Prince Aggreh surprisingly missed a one-on-one chance with Ezenwa.

Sunshine Stars Dele Olorundare went close to giving the home side the equalizer but his efforts only hit the side netting and despite a late pressure Kano Pillars held on for a vital win in front of 5,498 spectators in Akure.

Sunshine Stars staff cry out over unpaid wages

Sunshine Stars staff may go on strike if the club management refuse to their outstanding salaries.

The NPFL side’s staff hve not received their salaries for the past seven months and have threatened to withdraw from all off-field duties if their outstanding debts are not cleared before April 30, 2015.

The backroom workers claim they were abandoned by former chairman Akin Akinbobola led board when it became clear they would not win the Nigeria Professional League title, and the new board led by John Ola Mafo is not making any bold effort to ensure they are remunerated.

A staff who spoke to Goal after the Owena Waves’ 3-0 victory against El Kanemi Warriors on condition of anonymity revealed that Sunshine Stars are disaster-prone this season because workers’ welfare are not taken seriously by the new board.

“We have worked hard for seven good months in starvation and the Ondo State Football Agency board seems not be interested in our predicament. Our families are not happy with us because we are unable to provide their needs, yet the club board expects us to be wishing the team well during their league outings. How is that possible?

“When Prince Mafo came on board, he made it clear that he would only focus on the welfare of the players. Some of us were sacked for asking for our entitlements while others were handed stern warnings.

“Before we take to the streets or go on strike, we want to appeal to the state governor and the club management to help us find lasting solution because we are seriously starving and in huge debt.”

“I have been registered officially by Sunshine Stars for the ongoing NPFL season so I’m just waiting to make my debut for the Akure side.

“The much awaited debut will not be today at newcomers, MFM FC in matchday 4 clash in Lagos but hopefully in our next home match against FC Ifeanyiubah. I’m already counting days as well as dreaming for the D-day so that I can start to say thank you to Sunshine Stars for believing in me.

“My mission is to add my own quota to ensure Sunshine Stars win titles at the end of the ongoing football season or worst case scenario claim a continental ticket. I’m happy as well as satisfied with what is offered and on ground for me to achieve a successful season,” said Adah to supersport.com.

Sunshine Stars will be the guests of the newly promoted side, MFM FC in midweek’s matchday 4 clash at the Agege Stadium in Lagos.

  • Medrano rues Sunshine Stars poor season finish

Medrano rues Sunshine Stars poor season finish

CAMEROONIAN, Tamen Medrano Ngathie has blamed ill-luck for Sunshine Stars poor season finish.

The Akure Waves, who were mid-season champions and favourites to win the 2015 NPL title came close to picking the available CAF Confederations Cup ticket needing a win but drew to 7th time champions, Enyimba in the last game of the season.

The ex-Tiko United midfielder told Sportinglife that: “Yes it was sad that we could not crown our good run in the season winning the league or CAF Confed Cup ticket, however, football continues.

“The season gone by was full of a lot of suspense and intrigues, but it was a well deserved end league with most notably the officiating which was fair. I hope by next year it would be better.”

Medrano, however, refused to blame Akure fans for the clubs’ woos.

“They were wonderful as they supported us all the way, for me to say that the banishment to Lagos resulting to their action will never be fair to them.

“We see this things happen even in Europe so its not new, it does happens in football.”

On if he would stay with the Akure side next season having spent four good seasons in Nigeria, Medrano replied, ” I can’t give an answer to the question.”

Sunshine Stars ended the season 5th on the log with 61 points.

Sunshine Stars will return better next season – Olorundare

A management decision forced Kennedy Boboye out of Sunshine Stars after the Akure Gunners slumped to a horrible form at the tail end of the season that scuttled their title ambition but the club will bounce back better, one of its strikers Dele Olorundare has told footballlive.ng.

Speaking about his side’s disappointing sixth place finish in the 2015 NPFL, Olorundare is confident they will recover next season and are eager to resume camping though the club is yet to announce a specific date for next season’s preparation.

“We were shocked at the news of the coach’s resignation, and of course the Management weren’t pleased with the outcome. There was the objective of getting a continental slot last season but we fell short and the players are keen on ensuring next season turns out better for the club and our fans.”
