We don’t have quality players in Super Eagles – Amiesimaka

Ex-international, Adokiye Amiesimaka, says the lack of quality players in the Super Eagles is responsible for the drawback the team has been experiencing in recent times.

Amiesimaka, who was a member of the victorious Green Eagles squad that won the 1980 AFCON in Lagos, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday.

The former winger added that the players lacked the finesse needed to play at the world stage compared to what was obtainable in the 1980s and 1990s.

“Sometimes one just gets bored you know talking about same thing; I have never seen any people as indulgent in wishful thinking as Nigerians.

“We just don’t have the players; we don’t have the players; look at them individually; look at the quality; compare them to what we see every week in the (English) Premier League.

“Compare (them) to what we see every week in La Liga; compare (them) to what we see every week in the Bundesliga; compare (them) to what we see every week in the South American league.

“We just don’t have the quality expected; and if you like bring Alex Ferguson, bring Mourinho, bring Capello – still zero.

“We don’t have the quality and I’m not surprised we did not win.

“Even if we had won this game – from an objective analysis of it – you cannot be inspired, you cannot be inspired by it.’’

  • Eagles should put their loss behind them – Garba

Manu Garba, the former Coach of the Flying Eagles, on Saturday advised the Super Eagles to put their lost behind and focus on the return leg in Egypt.
Garba in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the Eagles should concentrate in their attack because the second match is a must win.
“Now Egypt are two points ahead of us which means that it is a must win for us. It also means that we must have to work hard in our attack.
“In terms of attacking we must be conscious of the Egyptians because they will be tight to penetrate.
“It was not a bad result. However, the three points would have been better if we had it. We find ourselves drawing the match one, one, there is still hope.
“We can still beat Egypt in their home front though it could be difficult, but nothing is impossible in the game of football,’’ the former Flying Eagles coach said.
He added that another challenge the Eagles had was the fact that most of the professionals had three days to train unlike their opponent.
“If you look at this match, the boys did well especially in the second half, but a moment loss of concentration cost us a great deal.
“We drew the match because of loss of concentration from the defence, but if we will work hard and remain focused, possibly, we will beat Egypt at home.
“But above all, I think the Egyptians were very much organised. They played a very technical game so to say.
“But if you look at our players, most of the professionals only had three to four days training of which if you look at the Egyptians they just had five professionals.
“The rest are home based which means their team is well blended.
“But for us we did not have much time to prepare very well for the match. I must say that there is still hope we can still beat Egypt at home but a lot of work needs to be done.
“Especially in terms of effort from defence because if you look at the first half we had more possession of the ball but the attack was not mobile.
“But I think in the second half they organised themselves very well especially when we score that goal.
“We relaxed a bit and that was when our opponent came back strong and the end result was 1-1,’’ Garba said.
NAN reports that the Pharaohs are currently leading Group G with seven points, followed by the Super Eagles with five points.
The winner of the group would qualify automatically for the Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), while the runners-up would have to qualify through a play-off. (NAN)

  • Cuper happy with preparation for Nigeria matches

Cuper happy with preparation for Nigeria matches

Egyptian national team coach, Hector Cuper, said his team is ready for Nigeria, insisting he is happy with the preparations for this month’s African Nations Cup (AFCON) qualifiers against the five-time World Cup participants.

The Argentine tactician has vowed to correct the lapses noticed during last weekend friendly against Burkina Faso.

Egypt defeated the Burkinabes 2-0 at the Borg El-Arab stadium in Alexandra.

“I am satisfied with the Burkina Faso game and I will work to avoid the mistakes made in the friendly when we face Nigeria,” africanFootball.com quoted Cuper as saying at post game press conference.

“We almost reached the final line-up for the Nigeria game.

“We build our squad depending on the players’ performance in the recent games.

“The Nigeria game is a test to determine our real abilities, and we will do our best during this game.

“I understand the criticism after facing minor teams since we didn’t reach the high performance we all look for. But we will do that when we play against Nigeria.”

  • NFF in talks with Enyeama, Emenike

NFF in talks with Enyeama, Emenike

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) says it is in talks with Vincent Enyeama and Emmanuel Emenike, former goalkeeper and striker respectively, over possible return to Super Eagles.

Super Eagles Interim Coach Samson Siasia who said this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, said the aim was to ensure that the country assembles its best legs against Egypt.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the Super Eagles have crucial two-legged Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), qualifying matches against the Pharaohs of Egypt.

The first leg encounter takes place in Kaduna on March 25, while the return leg match is scheduled for Cairo on March 29.

Siasia said NFF was exploring every avenue capable of bringing success, adding that it had taken steps to facilitate the players’ return to the team.

“We just finished talking with the NFF Technical Director, Shaibu Amadu; we are just putting the list of invited players together and after the NFF Technical Committee meeting on Thursday, the list should be released,’’ he said.

“The Super Eagles’ Secretary, Dayo Enebi, will be contacting the invited players and he is talking with Enyeama and Emenike; we will talk with them when they are ready to talk.

“We will be happy to see these players back in the team if they can help us to qualify for 2017 AFCON,’’ he said.

The Olympic silver medal winning coach, however, said he was not under any pressure to win Egypt.

“The job for me is tasking but we are here for challenges and, being a challenge does not mean that it is a mountain we cannot climb.

“I am not feeling any pressure; all I want to do is to ensure we do well in the two games against Egypt.’’

NAN reports that Siasia was appointed on Friday by the NFF as interim Super Eagles coach following the resignation of Sunday Oliseh.

He is to be assisted by Flying Eagles’ coach Emmanuel Amuneke, Salisu Yusuf and Alloy Agu.

  • NFF has outlived Oliseh’s saga – Green

NFF has outlived Oliseh’s saga – Green

The head of the Nigeria Football Federation technical committee, Chris Green, on Tuesday said the body has outlived the Sunday Oliseh saga and is 100 per cent focused on this month’s African Nations Cup (AFCON) qualifiers against Egypt.

Oliseh quit his job as Super Eagles manager last week.

However, the NFF has filled the void created by Oliseh’s exit by recalling former manager, Samson Siasia, Emmanuel Amuneke, Salisu Yusuf and Alloy Agu to prepare the team for the matches.

Green said the committee will not allow itself to be distracted further by Oliseh’s resignation, but work towards defeating the North Africans in the upcoming matches.

“Our focus right now is on the immediate two AFCON matches against Egypt as Sunday Oliseh is no more a distraction,” he told supersport.com.

“At least, the people in office can continue to take care of any issues concerning coach Sunday Oliseh.

“The technical committee has put behind us the Oliseh’s case. Ours is to put thing right to ensure we claim the desired results in the two matches.

“I must tell you we are wiser right now and I believe we have learnt our lesson from Oliseh’s tenure.

“I’m not making excuses for myself though I was not the chairman of technical then, but we jointly agreed to hire him. So we take responsibility.

“I think it’s just fair and proper for people to allow the technical committee do what is right in their work.

“First and foremost, Oliseh is the coach of the federation and cannot afford to insult or paint the body in bad light.

“Oliseh was praised to high heaven upon appointment in good fate and equally nicknamed the ‘Pep Guardiola’ of Africa to challenge him achieve the feat of the coach.

“Like I said everything was done in good fate. But we have work to do and we must work fast to ensure the work is well done.”

  • Amodu, Siasia to meet on Eagles’ AFCON list

Amodu, Siasia to meet on Eagles’ AFCON list

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical director, Shuaibu Amodu will meet with coach Samson Siasia and his assistants Salisu Yusuf and Emmanuel Amuneke on Tuesday in Abuja to work on a list of players to be invited for this month’s African Nations Cup (AFCON) qualifiers against Egypt.

The new coaches led by Siasia were appointed following Sunday Oliseh’s shock resignation last week.

Nigeria hosts Egypt in Kaduna on March 25, while the return leg takes place in Cairo on March 29, africanFootball.com reports.

Egypt leads the qualifying group for 2017 AFCON on six points, two points ahead of Nigeria, after two rounds of matches.

It is expected that a training camp for home-based players will open before the foreign-based players arrive the country for the match.

  • Golden boy chickens out

Sunday Oliseh, Amaju Pinnick’s golden boy, with the golden touch, to make the Super Eagles golden again, has sensationally chickened out!  Was that an unforeseen glitch or accident waiting to happen?

The exit of Stephen Keshi and entrance of Sunday Oliseh, was akin to the fecundity challenge of the hen and the fowl in a Yoruba saying.  The hen produced 20 eggs and hatched all 20.  Yet the owner angrily solid it off, for alleged barrenness.  Instead, he bought a fowl.  But the new darling produced only six eggs, hatching only one!

With all the hype surrounding Oliseh’s arrival, Guardiola of Africa, et al, it can only surprise the gullible that everything has ended a damp squib.  But that doesn’t mitigate the catastrophe: on the virtual eve of a crucial Nations Cup qualifier back-to-back with Egypt, the coaching camp is in disarray.

Now, Keshi with all his troubles, chalked up modest achievements, among which was an African Nations Cup (AFCON) win from virtual nowhere.  Yeah, many times, he didn’t play great.  But at least, he could boast a bragging right as AFCON winner.

Pray, what could Oliseh brag about?  Presiding over the dumping of Nigeria, in the opening rounds, in the second-tier Championship of African Nations (CHAN) in Rwanda, a tournament in which the “very bad” Keshi even won a bronze!

When Oliseh came, people who knew football pointed at his lack of managerial experience (never even coached a top league club side before, or even any of Nigeria’s age-grade teams); and his fearsome temper, which makes him rude and insufferable most of the time.  What Amaju Pinnick’s Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and their spin ensemble could mouth was the all-conquering Guardiola of Africa, that needn’t national team training experience before excelling!  Now, we know better!

But even worse: Hurricane Oliseh was some glorious undertaker of a sort, at least with some senior players.  Vincent Enyeama, one of Nigeria’s best goalkeepers ever, walked out on the national team simply because Oliseh would play the brusque boss over team captaincy.  It is a scandal that one of the best goalkeepers in France’s Ligue One is unavailable for selection in a key Nations Cup eliminator.  His replacement?  Another of Oliseh’s golden rookies from the English second-tier!

Another, Emmanuel Emenike, Nigeria’s top striker at the AFCON win, took a jump before he was pushed.  He was afraid, perhaps, Oliseh would sack him if he didn’t sack himself early enough!

The long and short?  Nigerian football is back to square one. Does that say anything about the quality of decision making in Nigeria’s public space?  And what’s this umpteenth intransigence about the inviolability of decisions, even if they appear, as in Oliseh’s appointment, patently wrong and not well thought through?

Still, with all of Oliseh’s faults, nothing excuses NFF for not fulfilling the terms of his contract, as the coach claimed.  It’s really a scandal: coaches being owed salaries, Oliseh’s accommodation deal remaining a mirage, and even his hand-picked assistant “begging” for his salary to attend to his health!

Contract terms brouhaha has always been part of NFF’s narrative, right from its time as NFA.  Even if Oliseh proved a pig in a poke, the contract disputes that rationalised his premature exit was also part of the reasons for Keshi’s sack.

So, when will the NFF get real, given the almost spiritual plane football occupies in the lives of stressed and longsuffering Nigerians?
