  • Why Oliseh invited Iwobi – NFF

Why Oliseh invited Iwobi – NFF

Nigeria Football Federation vice president, Shehu Dikko, has clarified the rationale behind the invitation of Arsenal U-21 star, Alex Iwobi, to the Super Eagles for next month’s friendlies against DR Congo and Cameroon.

Iwobi, 19, was handed a late invitation by coach Sunday Oliseh, last week.

Dikko, who is also the chairman of the Nigeria league, said  Iwobi’s invitation will benefit the country’s national teams.

“The call-up for Iwobi is simply a footballing as well technical one and for the good of the country. Iwobi has declared his intention to represent Nigeria and he is good enough to represent Nigeria at U-23 level. However, as he has played for England at the junior level, he cannot play for Nigeria again at the junior level as FIFA would only approve his change of nationality if he plays for the main Super Eagles,” africanFootball.com quoted Dikko as saying on his Facebook page.

“Therefore, his call-up now is to get his nationality change resolved and make him available for the Olympic Team if selected.”

AFCON ticket within Eagles’ reach – Ighalo

Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo, has said the 2017 African Nations Cup ticket is still within the reach of the three-time African champions.

Nigeria lies second in its qualifying group, two points behind leaders Egypt after two rounds of matches, africanFootball.com reports.

Both countries will clash home and away in March next year.

Ighalo, who is among the 24 players called up by Sunday Oliseh for next month’s friendlies against Cameroon and Congo, admitted it’s a tight situation but the Nigerians still have their destiny in their hands.

“The 2017 AFCON ticket is within our reach, this is football and you can never say. We still have to play the group leaders Egypt home and away. Those matches are of great importance to our ambition,” he told africanFootball.com.

“I think we have chance to grab the ticket as the group leaders, although it is a bit difficult, but by God’s grace and hard work, we will qualify.”

Enyeama, Mikel recalled for Eagles’ friendlies

Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, has called up 24 players for next month’s international friendlies with Congo and Cameroon.

Enyeama missed out on Nigeria’s last two fixtures against Tanzania and Niger Republic, supersport.com reports.

The Lille OSC goalkeeper was bereaved following the death of his mother and asked to be excused from both games.

He will now return to captain the three-time African champions in the fixtures against Congo and Cameroun in Belgium.

    The squad:

Goalkeepers: Vincent Enyeama (Lille OSC, France); Carl Ikeme (Wolverhampton Wanderers, England); Ikechukwu Ezenwa (Sunshine Stars); Femi Thomas (Enyimba FC).

  • Nigeria to face Congo, Cameroon in friendlies

Nigeria to face Congo, Cameroon in friendlies

Super Eagles will play two friendly matches against Cameroon and Congo next month in Belgium, the president of the country’s football association said on Monday.

“I can confirm that we will play against Congo on October 8 in Antwerp and against Cameroon on October 11 in Brussels,” supersport.com quoted Amaju Pinnick as saying on Channels Television.

Congo denied Nigeria a spot at the Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea earlier this year by finishing second in the qualifying group behind South Africa.

Pinnick said the Nigeria Football Federation was also eyeing another friendly with a North African team before the Super Eagles’ 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt in March next year.

Tunisia and Algeria are being considered as possibilities for the fixture in November, he added.

Egypt currently leads Group G with six points from two matches. Nigeria lies second on four points.

The two sides clash in a double-header in what is being seen as the decider for automatic qualification for the tournament in Gabon in two years’ time.

  • Eagles target 13 points for AFCON ticket

Eagles target 13 points for AFCON ticket

Super Eagles is targeting 13 points to qualify for the 2017 African Nations Cup in Gabon, a team official has said.

Egypt currently leads Group G with six points from two matches and a massive +7 goals difference.

Nigeria, who failed to qualify for the 2015 AFCON, has four points from two matches and needs an additional nine points or three wins to advance to the AFCON as the qualifiers allow for two best runners-up.

Therefore the outstanding home matches against Egypt and Tanzania are must-win, so too the away qualifier in Chad.

Nigeria slug it out with Egypt in a double-header in March, before visiting Chad in June and round up the qualifying series in September at home against Tanzania.

A top team official told africanFootball.com: “We sat down and did the permutation in Tanzania and we found out that qualification is still very much in our hands and usually the best losers who qualify for the AFCON do so on 12 points, but to play safe we are targeting 13 points.

“This will qualify us for the AFCON, notwithstanding Egypt’s other results in the qualifiers.

“And that is not taking into consideration the fact that we cannot beat Egypt in Cairo and Tanzania will not give Egypt a hard time at home as they did for us this month.”

He added: “Qualification is a priority and it does not matter if we go through as one of the best losers.”

  • NFF plans three matches for Eagles in Europe

NFF plans three matches for Eagles in Europe

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is working on an ambitious three-match friendly series in London and Belgium, which will involve Cameroon, Ghana and Congo, next month.

The matches will be played between October 5 and 13, africanfootball.com reports.

The website had earlier reported that discussions have reached an advanced stage for the Super Eagles to take on the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon during a FIFA-friendly window next month.

And now the proposal has taken on two more countries, Ghana and Congo, with London and Belgium being proposed as match venues.

There are two FIFA friendly windows left for this year – 5-13 October and 9-17 November.

The NFF has swung into action to make the most of these openings in order to fast track the rebuilding of the Eagles under new coach Sunday Oliseh ahead of a 2017 African Nations Cup qualifying double header against Egypt in March next year.

“We are still working on this plan, but we will give it our best shot because we need to get the new team ready for the decisive AFCON qualifiers against Egypt next year,” a top official told africanFootball.com

The Super Eagles has four points from two matches, two points behind Egypt, in the race for an automatic place for Gabon 2017.

  • Eduok adds to Eagles’ injury woes

Eduok adds to Eagles’ injury woes

Esperance of Tunisia striker, Emem Eduok, has added to Super Eagles’ injury woes after he picked up a knock against Tanzania at the weekend.

Eduok sat out the Eagles training on Monday and he is now most likely to miss Tuesday’s friendly against visiting Niger in Port Harcourt, africanFootball.com reports.

Russia-based midfielder, Izunna Uzochukwu, has been ruled out of the friendly after he suffered a groin injury in Dar es Salaam.

Defender Leon Balogun has already flown back to his German base after an ankle injury shut him out of the African Nations Cup qualifier in Tanzania.

Meanwhile, Niger coach Francois Zahoui has said his team will play with no fear against the Eagles.

“We are small team, while Nigeria had played at the World Cup. But we will not play with any fear especially after we lost our last match (2-0 in Burundi),” the former Cote d’Ivoire coach told africanFootball.com.

The match will kick off 3pm local time.

  • Oliseh should scout for more players – Fanny Amun

Oliseh should scout for more players – Fanny Amun

A former Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Federation, Fanny Amun, has advised the Super Eagles coaching crew led by Sunday Oliseh to search for more players to strengthen the squad for subsequent matches.

Amun, who discovered the likes of Kanu Nwankwo, Celestine Babayaro and Wilson Oruma at the Japan 93 Fifa U-17 World Cup, was impressed with the performance of Carl Ikeme and advised Oliseh to discover more talents for the country.

“I would advise Oliseh to continue in the good way he has started most especially scouting for good and talented players which has now brought to lime light goalkeeper Carl Ikeme,” Amun told Goal.

“As a coach I am particularly happy about this because if you have abundant talents on ground blending won’t be a problem. Oliseh should go out of the shores and spend more time in Europe and other parts of the world where Nigerians are playing and bring them back home to form a solid national team.

“Whoever will believe that we have a player like Carl Ikeme waiting to be tapped in England and nobody has ever thought of giving him the call up before Oliseh did so.

“The solution is to search for new talents and I am in total support for Oliseh to go all out in search of quality new players for the Eagles. He should look inward too and what I mean by looking inward is that he should spread his tentacles and dragnets to the Golden Eaglets, the Flying Eagles and the U-23 national team to get as much as possible talents that would form a pool which he would work on to give Nigerians the team they would be proud of.

“For now as I see it there is no pressure on Oliseh in the qualifying race for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. As it is now the former coach Stephen Keshi commenced the race for him by picking the first three points and with the one he got in Dar es Salaam had made it four points in two matches.

“He just needs to work hard on the team and make sure the Super Eagles collect the three points at stake in their next home match. We will then stabilize and continue to fight till the end of the qualifiers where I am very hopeful that we will get the 2017 AFCON qualification ticket,” he concluded.

  • How the Super Eagles rated against Tanzania

The Super Eagles of Nigeria played out a goalless draw with the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in one of the African Nations Cup (Afcon) qualifiers.

In a 4-3-3 formation some of the players failed to sparkle as they picked up one point from a potential three. On this note we take a look at how the Super Eagles players rated against Tanzania.

Carl Ikeme: 9/10 – The new invitee was outstanding in goal on his debut as he made important saves to keep Nigeria in the game. His aerial strength was vital as he won all aerial balls with accurate timing to keep a famous clean sheet.

He was very calm on the ball and ensured safety at the back as the game ended 0-0. Undoubtedly, Nigeria’s Man of the Match.

Solomon Kwambe: 5 – Kwambe, who deputized for Balogun at right back, was jittery on some occasions.

He made one or two good crosses into the box but was found wanting in defence.

Kenneth Omeruo: 7 – He had to stand up and be counted for this one, given the inexperienced stoppers, at international level, that partnered him. He passed that test with flying colours.

The young centre half grew into the game and made important blocks. He guided the ball to safety late in the game and marshalled the defense as expected.

William Troost-Ekong: 5 – Partnered Omeruo in central defense but was jittery on many occasions.

He easily lost the ball in defense but was lucky the Tanzanians did not lace up their scoring boots properly yesterday.

Kingsley Madu: 6 – The left back had a moderate game, passed the ball well to the wingers but was slow in possession and did not make much run as he lacked services from the midfield.

Obiora Nwankwo: 6 – Passed the ball around and was good as he shielded well under pressure. Lacked intensity in his game as the midfield failed to coordinate.

Izunna Uzochukwu: 5 – Was so jittery on his debut. Made some wrong passes and was slow in possession but was handy as he covered spaces in midfield.

Lukman Haruna: 4 – Haruna was poor on his return to the Super Eagles as he failed to mark and inspire from the midfield and was taken off for enterprising debutant Sylvester Igboun.

Moses Simon: 7 – The young winger was good and full of running in the first period, was tricky as he won some fouls but his final ball let him down.

Was weary in the second half and made way for Emem Eduok in attack.

Emmanuel Emenike: 6 – The striker lacked services in attack and resorted to the flanks. He was bullish in attack and made an impact from the right wing but lacked options when he pumped forward to deliver crosses.

Ahmed Musa: 6 – Was jittery with the armband in the game. Made poor passes particularly to Emenike but brilliant pace to get past defenders to shoot from the left angle as Emenike released him with a pass.

    Substitutes

Sylvester Igboun: 7 – Desperate Oliseh introduced Sly nine minutes before the interval when his midfield collapsed. He was good in possession but could not do it alone, especially on his (away) debut.

Anthony Ujah: 6 – The Werder Bremen striker lacked the services to thrive on as the midfield lacked coordination as he endured another game without a goal for the Super Eagles.

Emem Eduok: 6 – The forward came on to add bite to the attack and he did that moderately well even though services were lacking from the middle of the park.

He dropped in search of the ball and helped out Omeruo on occasion. Was comfortable on the ball too.

  • Musa calls for patience after Tanzania draw

Musa calls for patience after Tanzania draw

Super Eagles winger, Ahmed Musa, is satisfied with the draw against Tanzania in Saturday’s African Nations Cup qualifier, but has intimated that there is still room for improvement.

Musa, who was handed the captain’s armband in the absence of Vincent Enyeama, said that football dynamics had changed in Africa and although Nigeria is regarded as a big team, other nations like Tanzania were equally working hard to get good results.

“We came to Tanzania hoping for a win. But let’s be realistic, the draw was not a bad result, considering we have new players on the team and that means we have to give them time to adjust.

“The game against Tanzania was not easy as the East Africans were very determined. Football has changed and nowadays we have no small or big teams.

“We only trained together for two days, that is why the result can be described as fair. However, we have vowed that we will come back better and stronger in subsequent matches,” Musa told supersport.com.
