    ‘Keshi to get new contract’

Stephen Keshi will be given a new contract by the Nigeria Football Federation despite failing to qualify Nigeria for next year’s African Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea, an official has said.

There have been calls for Keshi to be replaced as Super Eagles coach, just as Samson Siasia was three years ago when he failed to lead the team to the 2012 AFCON.

However, Keshi is now to be given a new contract, according to NFF executive committee member, Emeka Inyama.

“The board has mandated the technical committee to finalise a contract for Keshi as he still remains the coach of Nigeria,” Inyama told africanFootball.com.

The AFCON-winning coach has handled the Eagles without a contract after his initial three-year deal ran out after the World Cup in Brazil.

A lingering leadership tussle that dogged Nigeria football in the past four months prevented the coach from signing a new deal.

‘Keshi sabotaged not to qualify for AFCON’

Soccer enthusiast Iyke Igbokwe has alleged that Stephen Keshi was sabotaged by his employers not to qualify for next year’s African Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea.

Nigeria, the defending champions sensationally failed to qualify for the tournament after playing a 2-2 draw with South Africa in Uyo, Wednesday, africanFootball.com reports.

Igbokwe, who contested the recent Nigeria Football Federation executive committee polls and has since appealed against the conduct of the elections, said it was planned from the onset for Keshi to fail.

“The NFFofficials saddled to oversee the game are to blame for this failure because we all know there is no love lost between Keshi and the board of the NFF,” he told africanFootball.com.

“The NFF board sacked Keshi, but the Presidency in its wisdom reinstated the coach because he started the qualifiers and with two matches to go, he should finish it.

“His replacement would have had a ready-made excuse for failure to qualify.

“Also, the team’s morale was low. Their daily allowances in Congo were not paid, but instead the NFF took 100 journeymen on a chartered plane to Congo for sightseeing paid for by tax payers.

“No NFF board member was there to visit the team before the match this has never been done in the history

“The animosity between employer and employee played out in full glare in Uyo.

“This is certainly not a proper way to run football in Nigeria.”

Sacking me won’t solve Eagles’ problems – Keshi

Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi, still wants to continue in his role despite missing out on qualification for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Keshi believes sacking him will do nothing to reverse the downward trend the team is currently experiencing, insisting the problems go beyond him.

“If a team fails, sacking the coach won’t solve the problem. The authority should look beyond the coach to find solutions to the problem,” sl10.ng quoted Keshi as saying on Friday.

Keshi, who has been working without a contract since the expiration of his last deal after the World Cup, admitted that failure to qualify for next year AFCON is a failure on his part.

“I can’t deny it is a shame that we failed to qualify, on my part I failed the nation but my players took South Africa for granted in a match they need to win.”

Keshi’s agent Emma Addo was however silent on his client future, but echoed Keshi’s sentiment that the problems of the team go beyond the coach.

AFCON failure: Nigeria will bounce back – NFF

The Nigeria Football Federation has promised the Super Eagles will bounce back from the failure to qualify for next year’s African Nations Cup while accepting full responsibility for the team’s results.

The African champions battled back to draw with South Africa in Uyo on Wednesday, when the narrowest margin of victory was needed, and left the country’s teeming football fans in sour mood, africanFootball.com reports.

But NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, stated that it was a time for sober reflection rather than trading of blames or looking for scapegoats.

“The NFF takes full responsibility for what has happened,” he said.

“It is a tragedy for us to come so near and yet fail to reach the finals. We made so much effort and sacrifice in Congo to achieve the victory we needed there on Saturday and really had no business bungling it here.

“However, our commitment is to build a sustainable football culture in the country and nothing has changed. This is a disappointment but for us, we gave it our best shot and supported the team fully.”

Pinnick said Wednesday’s failure could turn out to be blessing in disguise.

“All things work together for good for those that love God, according to Romans 8:28. This has happened but we believe it will work together for us to toil hard and achieve a renaissance that will take Nigeria football to much higher heights than it has ever been,” he added.

“I use this opportunity to thank the Akwa Ibom State Government for all the support they gave the team and the assistance they offered the NFF.

“This is a dark moment but we will emerge into sunshine shortly,” africanFootball.com quoted the NFF president s saying on Thursday.

  • Super Eagles out!

    Super Eagles out!

    Taofeek Babalola , Uyo

South Africa were denied a  first competitive win against African Champions Nigeria as a brace from Hull City forward, Sone Aluko rescued the Super Eagles from the jaws of defeat when they played a 2-2 draw at the Akwa Ibom International stadium in Uyo.

South Africa nearly took the lead in the third minute as a back pass from Oshaniwa was missed controlled by Middleborough defender, Kenneth Omeruo which allowed the charging Tokelo Rantie to outmuscle him inside the box but the strikers left shot went wayward.

That spurred the Eagles into action as Ahmed Musa wriggled his way past the South African defence but his shot came off the right-hand post in the 9th minute, the CSKA Moscow forward again had two opportunities within a minute to give Nigeria the lead but his effort was saved by Dean Furman in goal for Bafana Bafana.

The Eagles found little space in midfield as the South Africans closed down play and forced the African Champions into faulty passes. Reneilwe Letsholonyane picked up a yellow card on 23 minutes for a nasty kick on Raheem Lawal. Nigeria played a quick pass into the path of IK Uche from the resultant freekick but his 25 yards shot went straight into the hands of the South African goalkeeper.

The South Africans were forced into an early change when Kermit Erasmus came on for injured Bongani Ndulula. With five minutes to the end of the first half, fans inside the Akwa Ibom International stadium, Uyo, began to sang “all we are saying give us one goal” and the goal eventually came on 41 minutes but it was one that silenced the 30,000 fans, as Bafana Bafana striker,  Tokelo Rantie, sprinted away from Eagles defenders  before curling the ball past Vincent Enyeama to give the Group A winners a first half lead.

The South Africans came into the second half with super believe and again the tormentor-in-chief, Tokelo Rantie, beat Omeruo before rounding off Enyeama to score a beautiful second goal on the 48th minute.

Keshi immediately responded by throwing in Sone Aluko for the ineffective Raheem Lawal as the Eagles switched to a 4-4-2 formation and it paid off as the Eagles reduced the deficit when Ik Uche’s shot came off the bar and Sone Aluko was on hand to finish off the rebound in the 67th minute.

Nigeria got a major boost as South African midfielder, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, was sent off after he received a second yellow card for a clumsy tackle on Juwon Oshaniwa.  That encouraged the Eagles manager to throw-in hero against Congo Brazzaville, Aaron Samuel, who replaced out of form Kenneth Omeruo.

With ten men, the South Africans withdrew and defended in front of their 18-yard area, this  invited pressure from the Eagles and Mikel Obi drilled in a powerful left foot shot from the edge of the box but the South African keeper gathered on second attempt.

IK Uche created an opening for himself but his shot was met by a confident save from Darren Keet. Onazi also tried from the edge of the box with a left foot shot but his shot was also saved however, Sone Aluko rifled in a right foot shot from 25 yards to make it 2-2.

The heads of Super Eagles players bowed in anguish as results filtered in that Congo Brazzaville had defeated Sudan 1-0 which took them to 10 points, two more than Nigeria and two below Group A winners, South Africa, while Sudan finished bottom with just 3 points.

  • Super Eagles players rating

    Super Eagles players rating

It’s no longer news that Nigeria  failed to beat South Africa at home which has now cost them a ticket passage to Equatorial Guinea 2015 but how did the players perform. SportingLife presents to you, the Super Eagles ratings against the Bafan Bafana:

    Vincent Enyeama (5)

Vincent Enyeama did not have a lot to do really except pick the ball out from his net twice. However, he made one vital save on 95 minutes to deny Tokelo Rantie a hattrick and maintain Nigeria’s unbeaten record in a competitive game against South Africa.

    Efe Ambrose (3)

He was ‘in ghost mood’ throughout the game and when Tokelo Rantie ran through the right flank for the first goal, fans wondered if the Eagles played with a right back. He offered nothing in attack and was off the space of the game.

    Kenneth Omeruo (3)

The usually very assured defender had perhaps ‘his worst game’ in an Eagles shirt. He looked unfit and had trouble with the space and power of Tokelo Rantie. Omeruo’s body language said it all when he was substituted for Aaron Samuel.

    Azubuike Egwuekwe (4)

Egwuekwe was outstanding in Congo Brazzaville when Nigeria won 2-0 but against the Bafana Bafana he was not the same player. He was beaten for pace for the first goal and did not do enough to trouble the South African defence from set pieces when Eagles were chasing the game.

    Juwon Oshaniwa (5)

Oshaniwa was the most adventurous defender for the Super Eagles as he dashed forward at any opportunity but his decision making in the final third let him down and defensively he wasn’t strong enough.

    Ogenyi Onaz (5)

Onazi is perhaps the best marker in the Eagles but he had a quiet game unlike the Lazio man. He had a left foot shot saved in the second half but that was founding wanting in areas of breaking down play which is the strongest part of his game.

    Raheem Lawal (4)

Raheem Lawal, played alongside Mikel Obi and Ogenyi Onazi in midfielder but he never had a grip of the game as he rushed his passes and looked confused in possession.

    John Obi Mikel (5)

Mikel had a decent game and was even forced to shoot with his left foot in the second half as the Super Eagles chased the game – a rare sight for fans of the Chelsea star. However, he failed to pick out the strikers with a final pass as the South Africans kept the defence tight.

    Emmanuel Emenike (4)

Emenike was the star of the Super Eagles when they lifted the 2013 Nations Cup but he has failed to score for the team for a year and four months and against South Africa he had just a header on target when was saved by Darren Keet in goal for South Africa.

    Ahmed Musa (4)

Musa missed three opportunities in the first half as he hit the post and had the other two saved by the keeper but he should had done better. The team failed collectively but Musa’s misses will be remembered by the fans inside the Akwa Ibom International stadium as the major reason why the team failed to beat the South Africans.

    Ikechukwu Uche (5)

Returnee Eagles striker IK Uche worked really well but he dropped too deep atimes in search of the ball and that reduced his overall effectiveness.

    Substititute

    Sone Aluko

Aluko came in and immediately showed hunger and his second goal of the night showed his desperation as he hit the ball with his weaker left foot from 20 yards. His goals weren’t enough but saving Nigeria from an embarrassing home defeat is a thing he will be proud off.

    Aaron Samuel (N/R)

He came on late in the second half and could not be rated.

  • Eagles’ victory over Congo encouraging – Keshi

Eagles’ victory over Congo encouraging – Keshi

After securing a much needed 2-0 win over Congo in Saturday’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, has described the result as encouraging as the team gets set for the final group game against already qualified South Africa.

Keshi, who had been under intense pressure before the win over the Congolese, said he was impressed with the players’ output, stressing that he hopes “they continue that way ahead of the game against South Africa.”

“What I saw was encouraging and I just hope they continue this way.

“The boys are really focused and of course they know why they are here. It’s the business so we have to do what we have to do,” he told SL10.ng.

The Super Eagles had since arrived Nigeria, and landed at the Uyo International Airport at about 3am on Sunday. The team will play South Africa at the Uyo Stadium for the first time, in a game that holds no significance to the South Africans having already sealed top spot in group A.

    AFCON: Nigeria pips Congo 2-0

    Keeps qualification hopes alive

Two second half goals from Ikechukwu Uche and Aaron Samuel were enough for Nigeria as the Super Eagles moved closer to qualification for the 2015 African Cup of Nations with a 2-0 victory over Congo at Pointe Noire, Sl10.ng reports.

The game started at an electric pace with Thievy Bifouma probing and forcing Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama to make a great stop in the opening minutes.

Villarreal striker Ikechukwu Uche squeezed past the Congolese defence line and tried an audacious chip which was saved by Chancel Massa.

Both sides battled for supremacy in midfield and clearly showed that they needed the maximum points.

A perfectly executed team move was well connected by Emmanuel Emenike but the Fenerbahce man failed to beat the goalkeeper.

The remaining action in the first 45 minutes was scrappy with the two sides not showing the willingness to get the opener.

The second half was ignited with the introduction of Sone Aluko who ran rings around the hosts.

In the 58th minute, the moment for Nigeria to score arrived when Massa fouled Emenike in the 18-yard box after the impressive John Obi Mikel put him through on goal.

Returning Villarreal striker Ikechukwu Uche kept his cool to score for the African champions from the penalty spot.

The hosts were awarded a spot kick few minutes later, but the reliable Enyeama denied Bifouma in the 65th minute.

Mikel was busy creating the chances in midfield. He threaded an amazing pass to the pacy Ahmed Musa and the CSKA Moscow man made Massa work hard with his effort.

Eagles bombarded the Red Devils for the killer goal and deservedly got the ”insurance goal” through Aaron Samuel’s left footed finish.

The match came to a disappointing end with unhappy Congo fans having to be dispersed, and the final few minutes of the game was delayed.

However after a short break, the game was completed and Nigeria head back home with the three points.

AFCON: Eagles ready for Congo – Keshi

Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi, has said the team is focused and ready for the crucial make-or-mar African Nations Cup qualifier against Congo-Brazzaville in Pointe Noire on Saturday.

The African champions had started full training in preparation for the clash against the Red Devils in Pointe Noire, SL10.ng reports.

It was a full house as all 23 invited players except Captain Vincent Enyeama and Ikechukwu Uche were present for the training session which took place at the FIFA Goal Project Technical Centre in Abuja.

John Mikel Obi, Emmanuel Emenike and Emem Uduok gave a good account of themselves as they all scored in a warm-up exercise.

Keshi, who spoke to journalists after the training, expressed confidence in the ability of the team, adding that he was positive about their fitness and readiness for the clash.

“What I saw this evening is encouraging and I just hope it continues that way.

“The boys are focused and of course they know why they are here, it’s business as usual and so we have to go and do what we need to do.

“We just have to be ready. This is African football.

“It is not European football and so I always tell my players that once they leave Europe they must switch from the European to African mentality,” SL10.ng quoted the coach as saying to journalists.

The Super Eagles will leave for Pointe Noire on Thursday for Saturday’s crunch game.

Nigeria has four points from four matches, Sudan is at the bottom of the Group A table with three points, while South Africa leads the group with eight points followed by Congo Brazzaville with seven points.

Keshi Appeals to Eagles: Play robust African style against Congo

Super Eagles’ handler Stephen Keshi has told his players to play like Africa Champions and drop the European play and mentality as they engage the national team of Congo Brazzaville on Saturday in the make or mar 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Big Boss as he is fondly called said that that is the only way the Super Eagles can beat Congo Brazzaville on their ground.

“I have told my players to play the African way when we meet Congo Brazzaville on Saturday. We need to play hard to get the result we crave for and we should drop the European style or method and play the African way”, he disclosed.

Keshi also expressed confidence in the ability of his players to weather the storm in Congo, while declaring that the spirit was high in the camp which points to victory for the Nigerian team.

“My players have really stepped up the gear and the spirit in camp is very high. The boys have been showing the hunger and urge to get victory against Congo and by the grace of God we will get victory. Nigerians should also rally round this team and support the team with prayers and we will come back with victory”, Keshi disclosed.
