  • Eagles’ World Cup list was Keshi’s decision – NFF

Eagles’ World Cup list was Keshi’s decision – NFF

The Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) technical committee has moved to absolve itself of blame in the controversy surrounding the provisional list of players to represent Nigeria at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi, named several unfit players and some who do not play regularly for their European clubs, attracting criticism from the media and fans alike.

Members of the NFF’s technical committee were also criticized as Keshi had first submitted the list to them for “vetting” before it was made public.

The Chairman of the NFF technical committee, Chris Green, has now declared that the body was not wrong in approving the list submitted by Keshi.

“We (technical committee) fully relied on the position of the Chief coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi on the players he chose.

“We relied on him to ascertain the fitness levels of the players. At the time he gave us this list, I am sure that by his findings, he was sure the players were fit.

“If anything had happened after the list was submitted, I may not be aware,”supersport.com quoted Green as saying on Nigeria Info FM.

He also noted that “there is no cause for alarm” as injured players in the list would ultimately be dropped.

“There is no cause for alarm because what we have now is a 30-man list. Seven players will be dropped and the list will be pruned down to 23.

“So in the case of any player in that list being injured, I am sure the coach knows what to do,” he said.

  • World Cup: Eagles won’t miss Uche, Obasi – Nwosu

World Cup: Eagles won’t miss Uche, Obasi – Nwosu

Former Green Eagles skipper, Henry Nwosu, has insisted that Super Eagles will not miss the services of Ikechukwu Uche and Chinedu Obasi at the 2014 FIFA World Cup starting next month in Brazil.

Uche and Obasi were excluded from coach Stephen Keshi’s 30-man provisional World Cup list released on Tuesday evening.

In a chat with Goal, Nwosu who is Gateway United’s head coach is confident that players invited by Keshi will defy all odds to make the nation proud.

“We have a very good squad and with this, we are sure of doing well at the World Cup because we have our star players there,” Nwosu told Goal.

“It is now left for those whose inclusion has steered controversy to prove their worth before the world.

“The absence of the likes of Uche and Ideye [Brown] will definitely not be a minus as long as those invited prove their mettle. But if the reverse is the case, then people would naturally feel their absence.

“Obasi wouldn’t have made any difference if invited because he is just returning from injury. I know him too well and he is a good and determined player but unfortunately he is not in his best form.

“In the real sense, he wouldn’t have made the squad because it will be very difficult for Keshi to drop his regular players for him.

“IK Uche on his own part has got scores to settle with Keshi and his crew because reports have it that he does not feel too good any time he comes in from the bench which makes him not to give his best . This kind of attitude is not good for the success of the team,” Nwosu told Goal.

    Ogu vows to return stronger

John Ogu has expressed his disappointment at being left out of Nigeria’s 30-man preliminary squad for the World Cup, but vowed to come back stronger and rallied support for the squad.
The Academica midfielder appeared to have paid the price of irregular football with just eight appearances this season and was naturally disappointed by his exclusion, KickOffNigeria.com reports.
“Gutted I didn’t make the preliminary squad,” Ogu posted on his Instagram handle. “Nigeria is blessed with a lot of players; we all can’t make the list. Every player wants to be at the World Cup.”
Ogu expressed his appreciation to Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, who gave him his debut, and asked Nigerians to support the team.
“I want to thank coach Keshi for the opportunities he gave me. I remain grateful for all. He made my dream come true as a player to serve my great nation which I’m always proud of.
“Thanks everyone for your support. Let’s pray for the lads. Let’s support the team as much as we can because I believe in the manager and the squad selected.
“We are family. I will come back stronger,” KickOffNigeria.com quoted the midfielder as saying in his Instagram.

  • ‘Eagles to repeat Atlanta miracle’

    ‘Eagles to repeat Atlanta miracle’

A top official of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) has backed the Super Eagles to impress at the World Cup by emulating the exploits of Nigeria’s team to the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
The Deputy-Commissioner of the FCC, Bukar Bello, made this assertion during a courtesy visit by officials of the Commission to the Nigeria Football Federation Secretariat in Abuja.
“When our U-23 boys left these shores for the 1996 Olympic Games in United States, no one gave them a chance.
“All the bookmakers noted some other teams as favourites but Nigeria was not among. In the end, the Dream Team stunned the world by winning the gold medal.
“We see the same thing happening in Brazil. The so-called experts are tipping the famous names, such as Brazil, Germany, Italy and Argentina to win. But we believe the Super Eagles have the character to go there and make the country and the continent proud,” KickOffNigeria.com quoted the FCC official as saying at the forum.
The officials of the FCC were on a routine visit to the NFF, and commended the Federation for its thoroughness and deliberate efforts to ensure that federal character is reflected in the composition of its executive committee, as well as its management and staff.

  • ENYEAMA’S LILLE TO FACE PLAY-OFFS

    ENYEAMA’S LILLE TO FACE PLAY-OFFS

SUPER EAGLES shot-stopper, Vincent Enyeama and Lille pals will have to face UEFA Champions League play-offs for the 2014/15 camapign after failing to catch up with second-placed Monaco in the Ligue 1 log no thanks to Friday’s 1-1 away to Bastia.

Reacting moments after the game, Lille coach René Girard felt his side lacked the necessary killer instinct as they came up short of the three points that would have guaranteed Champions League football.

“If I’ve any regrets it’s that we didn’t do what was necessary when we had three or four clear chances to pull two goals clear. We lacked that killer instinct. We conceded the equaliser and there were still five minutes to play. In football you have to take your chances when they come along. There are two matches to play with six points and we need two points more so we’ll hang in there. There’s still time to get the points we need.”

Meanwhile, his Bastia counterpart, Frédéric Hantz felt the Corsicans deserved to win. “I think we cause them problems in playing the first ball out from the back. When we were beaten in midfield we still managed to protect our goal. And when Wahbi scored I was convinced we were going to win. I think everyone was. I’m really angry because we’ve been, robbed isn’t the word, but we’ve been deprived of the victory we deserved.”

Enyeama’s Lille are currently placed third with 75 points from 36 matches as against second-placed AS Monaco with 75 points from 35 matches.

  • Obiku tips Eagles for World Cup glory

Obiku tips Eagles for World Cup glory

Former Nigerian striker, Michael Obiku, has tipped the Super Eagles to surpass the second round performance in past World Cup appearances at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
The Eagles’ best performances at the quadrennial global football showpiece were their debut at USA’94 as well as at France’98 World Cup where the side exited at the second round stage of the competition.
At the upcoming World Cup in Brazil, the reigning African champions will contest for the Group F tickets with newcomers, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iran and former champions, Argentina.

Obiku said the team is privileged to have Stephen Keshi at the helm of affairs whom he believes will assemble the best legs for the tournament.
“First thing is that we’ll qualify from the group way ahead of other opponents including the group favourites, Argentina.
“We’re blessed with a good coach who has gone out to make his marks in Togo and Mali before coming to Nigeria to assume the head coach role of the Super Eagles.
“Keshi equally showed his character in the 2013 AFCON as well as the CHAN, both competitions in South Africa.
“Of course, your first game you won’t want to lose as victory gives you confidence to do better in the second game and by the time you’re playing the third game it becomes a game of pride to determine who tops the group.
“The Eagles’ group opponents, Iran, Bosnia and Argentina are good, I know for certain once we’re able to come out of the group there won’t be any stopping the Eagles from contesting for honours,” said the former Iwuanyanwu Nationale and Feyenoord Rotterdam hitman to supersport.com.

World Cup: Fans cautioned on high expectations

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has cautioned fans to tune down their high expectations from the national team ahead of the World Cup in Brazil this summer.
NFF General Secretary, Musa Amadu, while speaking on the expectations of the association, advised supporters not to get their hopes up too high for the global showpiece.
Amadu, however, stated that the federation, like most Nigerians, wants the Super Eagles to surpass the previous exploits of other African countries in the competition, by going beyond the quarter-finals.

He further informed that arrangements are in place to ensure Stephen Keshi’s men are well prepared, to ensure that they have a good outing in the competition.
“All we are doing is to ensure that the team is prepared adequately for the tournament in Brazil and we are hopeful that the boys will give the best of representation to Nigeria because we are providing them the enabling environment to excel,” Amadu told KickOffNigeria.com.

  • Morocco 2015: South Africa can’t stop Nigeria – Dosu

Morocco 2015: South Africa can’t stop Nigeria – Dosu

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Joseph Dosu, has tipped the Super Eagles to scale above other countries in Group A of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying rounds.
Nigeria has been drawn alongside South Africa, Sudan and the winners between Namibia/Congo and Libya/Rwanda.
The Atlanta 1996 Olympic gold medalist though insisted the group is a tough one but is optimistic that the Super Eagles will make it to Morocco.
“I think it’s a hard group because we have South Africa, Sudan and [probably] Libya that won the home based Nations Cup. It is definitely a tough group,” Dosu told Goal.
“But then as Nigerians we know how to scale through. If we can win our first two games, I think it will be easy but then at the beginning it will be very tough.
“You can’t write off Nigeria because we are African champions and we know how to make our way through,” he continued.
The draw is seen as a rekindling of rivalries between the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana, a side that is longing to earn its first victory in a competitive match against the reigning African champions.
“South Africa will be hoping to take their pound of flesh but Nigeria I think we will continue from where we stopped from. The last time we met them, even with our home-based team, we emerged victorious.
“I think it’s a continuous process for the Super Eagles and the South Africans will need to work hard because we will continue from where we stopped,” Dosu concluded.

  • SUPER EAGLES AND THE SCOTTISH TEST

THE Scottish first goal in the first half of that entertaining build-up match, against the Super Eagles was a World Cup act.

You cannot blame our surprised Goal Keeper, Austin Ejide. We excuse the Defence who like the players on both sides were lost in admiration as the leather took a curving flight from the back heels of beautiful Charlie Mulgrew to land at the far corner of the Nigerian net.

However, at the end of that pulsating encounter it is clear that Nigeria has a promising squad, but lack the defence and our full backs, i.e. Nos 2 and 3, remain our Achilles heel. These two problematic wings have been our worry since the advent of coach Keshi.

Do we close business and hand over our fate on the left flank to the rigid southpaw, our own Ashley Cole. Echiejile is a very strong lad, can block and defend, but his problem is his inability to overlap without the opponents intercepting, and reading his passes. Like Chelsea’s Cole, his right leg is a log. We need a mobile left full with typewriter-like two legs in case we need to counter Argentina’s offensive or hold our eighteen against a forward line that probes from the inside! We had suggested Godfrey Oboabona the utility defender to move to that wing. Then Mikel Obi really comes home to pair Omeruo. Obi did exactly that for Chelsea to deny Liverpool the English Premier League Championship.

We have to do that to contain Argentina. We have great midfield jugglers who can really take Mikel Obi’s job in the midfield until we solve our headache in that porous defence. For Nigeria, we have a collection of beautiful midfield postmasters, namely, Osaze, Onazi, Victor Moses, Uzoenyi, Nosa  Igiebor, Babatunde,  Oduamadi. The midfield is not lacking in materials.

The right full back position is another problematic position for the Eagles. Against Argentina and with Di Maria constantly on the torment, we expect nothing but trouble as our best No. 2 Efe Ambrose may be good on the offensive, am afraid he is not fast enough to return after an attack. Secondly he lacks the stamina.

The Warri Wolves captain, with the perfect body that fits the shape of our great liberos, Okoroji, Victor Oduah, Christian Chukwu, Stephen Keshi, Uche Okafor etc. in all his matches with the Green Eagles has failed all the tests. He has no confidence. He cannot head the balls down. Does not have the ball control and does not seem to know when to slide for a neat tackle. Always a rough house easily picked up by eagle eyed referees, his hands more than his legs can ruin our World Cup aspirations. His panicky second goal gift to Scotland cancels, once and for all, his ticket to Brazil.

Significantly after the Scottish encounter I’m going ahead to pick my new and the last POSSIBLE XI FOR THE SUPER EAGLES.

No. 1 Goalkeeper:           Vincent Enyeama the No. 1 Keeper in the French               League. Must hold the ball on the catch.

No. 2     Efe Ambrose: must train for stamina

    No. 3     Godfrey Oboabona

    No. 4     Ogenyi Onazi

    No. 5     Kenneth Omeruo

    No. 6     Mikel Obi

    No. 7     Victor Moses

    No. 8     Uche Nwofor

    No. 9     Emmanuel Emenike

    No. 10   Osaze Odemwingie

    No. 11   Ejike Uzoenyi

SOUTH KOREA: THE EMPERORS FROM THE FAR-EAST.

Perennially, regarded as the Asian soccer power, Korea was the great team in Wembley 1966, that led Eusebio’s Portugal 3-0 before the Black Panther sprang into action, and Portugal levelled up to win 4-3.  Physical, fast with few tall players, respected in Asia but won a lot more for itself in their USA World Cup final outing against Germany. They almost pulled a draw after three goals down. This is a team for the coming century.

    ENGLAND

Have searched for a winning team since 1966 when Bobby Moore, the Charlton Brothers, Geoff Hurst, Alan Ball, and Gardon Banks won the Cup at home. Today, in place of Sir Alf Ramsey, Manager Bobby Robson, there have been foreigners before Roy Hodgson. On the field, it is a different story.

The only vision of the past is goalkeeper Peter Shilton, whose over 100 national team appearances provide the only consistency. The New England squad repeatedly dominates minnows but cannot find answers to top teams. For the post-Ramsey winning generation, England waited on Gary Lineker, Neil Webb; John Barnes, Owen and to ring a bell.

For Gerrard, this year has been a journey, an eventful escapade. He had the chance to sign off in gold. But he lost in the final rounds and Brazil like the English Premier League is going to prove a bridge too far. England will not go beyond the preliminaries.

  • World Cup: Brazilians want Nigeria flags

World Cup: Brazilians want Nigeria flags

Brazilians in the city of Porto Alegre have adopted Nigeria as their team and requested for flags and memorabilia during games.

Salau Bello, an official of the Nigeria Consulate in Brazil, who is the embassy liaison for the Super Eagles for the World Cup, said the city will back Nigeria to the hilt.

“People of Porto Alegre have adopted Nigeria as their second team and they have told us to bring a lot of Nigeria flags and jerseys so that they can show their support properly,” Bello told KickOffNigeria.com.

Bello also said the Super Eagles will not lack support from their compatriots in Brazil, adding “We have about 5,000 Nigerians in all of Brazil. About 3,000 of those are in São Paulo alone, and as I speak to you, about 1,000 have already been mobilized to travel to the venues to support the team.

“As the tournament gets closer, I am sure we will see a lot more.”

The Super Eagles leave for Brazil on June 11 from the United States, and Bello said the boys should expect a “very Nigerian welcome.”
