Nigeria striker Ademola Lookman, last night, fired a brace for the Super Eagles to eliminate Cameroon 2-0 and set up an Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal clash against Angola on Friday.

The Atalanta player opened scoring for Nigeria on 36 minutes, when danger man Victor Osimhen, whose persistence on the edge of the box put pressure on the Cameroon defender set him up for the kill. The man of the Match got his shot under a diving goalkeeper Ondoa.

This was after the Super Eagles earlier effort by Semi Ajayi was chalked off by VAR.

Lookman doubled the Eagles lead when he connected home a cross by Calvin Bassey at full time.

Cameroon enjoyed more of the ball possession, while Nigeria had three goals on target and the Indomitable Lions none in the first half.

As expected, The Indomitable Lions chased the game after the restart, but Nigeria, with Osimhen in a fighting mood, were always dangerous when they pushed forward.

In the 80th minute, Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali injured his knee when he tried to deal with an aerial ball and he was replaced by Francis Uzoho.

For Cameroon, it’s four defeats in their last five meetings with Nigeria at this tournament.

There was to be no repeat of their goals in the 87th and 91st minutes to rescue themselves against The Gambia in their final group-stage game.

Next up for Nigeria is a quarter-final against Angola back in Abidjan on Friday.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will rekindle their bitter rivalry when both sides take the field in the round of 16 at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast.

Today’s clash will be the first competitive meeting between Nigeria and Cameroon since their encounter at the same stage of this tournament in 2019.

The Super Eagles have lost three AFCON finals to Cameroon, with the most painful defeat coming in front of the Lagos fans, at AFCON 2000 final. Nigeria has since defeated Cameroon twice in the AFCON knockout stages; a 2-1 quarterfinal victory in 2004, and a 3-2 round of 16 win in 2019. Saturday’s match presents another opportunity to extend the run. Tune in to GO Football (ch. 61) at 9pm to watch the action live.

Namibia picked up a historic 0-0 draw against Mali in their last group E match, to progress to AFCON knockout stages for the first time in their history. Collin Benjamin’s side secured four points to finish as one of the best third-place teams in the group stages.

Angola emerged surprise winners of Group E, after securing a 2-0 victory over 2013 runner-up, Burkina Faso, in the last group match. They also held the 2019 winners, Algeria, to a 1-1 draw in the first group match.

Perennial rivals  Nigeria and Cameroon will step out for the eighth time in the Africa Cup of Nations tomorrow  in the Round of 16 of the ongoing Cote’d’Ivoire 2023.

Both nations qualified from their respective   groups in second positions after gruelling group stage matches. Against all odds and expectations, the Super Eagles came second behind Nzalang Nacional of Equatorial Guinea on lesser goals difference  in Group A even though both teams finished with seven points each.

While Indomitable Lions needed a last gasp heroics before beating Gambia 2-1 to qualify as second in Group C behind the defending champions, the Teranga Lions of Senegal who topped their section  with a hundred percent record.

As such,  the die is cast and the stage is set for the Round of 16 tie billed for 9pm Nigeria time at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan tomorrow.

Incidentally,  it is the same stadium the then Green Eagles were beaten 3-1 by Cameroon in the grand finale of the 1984 AFCON  to lift their first title.

Nigeria lost further twice in the final of the AFCON to the same Cameroonian team in 1988 in Morocco and in the year 2000 when Nigeria co-hosted with Ghana. The Eagles did beat the Indomitable Lions in the third place match of the 1992 edition in Senegal; the quarter final of the 2004 edition in Tunisia and the Round of 16 tie in Alexandria, Egypt in 2019 through Odion Ighalo’s double and Alex Iwobi’s match winner but nothing hurts like the defeat the Eagles suffered in the AFCON final thrice.

Speaking ahead of the blockbuster Round of 16 tie, former Super Eagles defender, Ifeanyi Udeze said Nigerians should acknowledge the sacrifices made by the Eagles players to make themselves available for games.

He called on Nigerians to rally round the team and give them the maximum support either they are playing up to expectations or otherwise.

The former PAOK Thessaloniki defender also counselled the Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro to get his tactics right to ensure that the team’s performance inspires more confidence.

“It is not easy for the team playing a game every three or four days. We need to give them a the support they need,” Udeze who represented Nigeria at  the 2000 and 2004 AFCON said .

“They need to also make us feel good. It is now the AFCON just started and we want to see more  tactically from Jose Peseiro.”

Former Super Eagles midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju , a member  of the team that  lifted the AFCON in 1994 in Tunisia,  reiterated that the coach Peseiro-led side have what it takes to beat Cameroon  even as he backed Eagles and Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen to hit his strides later in the AFCON.

Adepoju stated that the Napoli hitman has been fighting for the team despite his struggles in front of goal and that he needs the support of his colleagues to get out of his present state.

He also added that it is rather more important for the team to keep creating chances to score and would have been more concerned if the chances were not forthcoming.

“He(Osimhen)  keeps on doing what he has been doing fighting for the team and struggling and all that,” Adepoju who played for Real Sociedad said.”The only thing is that he has not been calmer when it comes to putting the ball at the back of the net. It is important creating the chances and the goals and it is going to be more important for them to score the goals.

“If they are creating chances the possibility of scoring is high. I will be worried if they do not create chances. He is getting there and I believe in subsequent matches he would improve.”

A member of the 2013 AFCON title team, Obiorah Nwankwo , has equally thrown his weight behind the Eagles as he called on the players to stay focused and know that beating any opponent is possible with determination and hard work.

“They (Cameroon)  are good individually. They are fast and talented but I believe we will beat them,” Nwankwo noted.

Also speaking is one of the Assistant Coaches to former Super Eagles gaffer, late Stephen Keshi, Sylvanus Okpala who has urged the Nigeria’s coach, Jose Peseiro to consider changing strategies for the knockout round of the AFCON.

Okpala , a AFCON winner  with the Green Eagles in 1980,  said a change of approach could be necessary at this point as the team needs to start scoring goals and dominating their opponents.

“After the first round matches you will need to change your strategy. It is the most important thing in football. The formation and the players come next,” Okpala  nicknamed ‘ The Quicksilver’ in his heyday with the national team, said. “Let the coach know whom to play what fits into his own philosophy or football concept. He has the boys and he has been training with them. He knows the players that can fit in.

“We are in Cote d’Ivoire to win the AFCON because anything lesser than that is a failure.”

Meanwhile, Super Eagles gaffer, Jose Peseiro has called on Nigerians to be patient with the team while stating that they would get it right against Cameroon and their future opponents.

“I have the obligation to do what is right for my team, pick the best formation and how best we can win games,” he told reporters in Abidjan. “The most important thing is for my players to believe in our strategy. They believe in what we are doing and have done well so far.

“If you remember at the last AFCON, Senegal didn’t score too many goals in the group stage.

“We are not scoring too many goals but we are winning. I prefer to continue like this and reach the final.”

  • AFCON: Nigerians urge Super Eagles to be more creative, clinical

AFCON: Nigerians urge Super Eagles to be more creative, clinical

Some Nigerian football lovers have called on the Super Eagles to be more creative and clinical in front of goal to progress in the knockout rounds and win the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.

They made the remarks in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Keffi, Nasarawa state on Wednesday.

NAN reports that the Super Eagles have played three games, won two, drew one and qualified for the knockout stage of the tournament to face Cameroon in the round of 16.

However, so far the team has scored only three goals thereby attracting the ire of supporters who had expected more from the national team.

Eche Amos, Public Relations Officer, Nasarawa state Ministry for Youths and Sports Development, described the performance of the Super Eagles so far as underwhelming giving the array of experienced footballers selected to represent the country.

“The pattern of their play this time around is not encouraging. We all know how the Super Eagles used to play before. So, they need to wake up and improve, not just up front but in every department.

“If they cannot wake up, it’s going to be doom for them and embarrassing for the country if we exit the tournament at an early stage. But I still believe strongly that the Super Eagles will make us proud at the end,” he said.

Amos charged African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen, and other Nigerian strikers to give stand out performances, as according to him, without adequate goals Nigeria will face challenges against stronger opponents.

“A defence needs a good attack. So, if we are defending very well, then it should translate into a potent goals coring attack, which is not happening at the moment. So, Osimhen and his co attackers need to do better by putting in more goals,” he said.

Smah George, Secretary, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Nasarawa state chapter, agrees but pointed out that the Super Eagles midfield must also put in extra effort by creating more chances for the strikers and other team mates to get the goals.

“What’s the reason why we have these high profile strikers in the team, yet we are goal shy? It means it’s either the midfield is not working or the strikers are goal shy themselves.

“But with the pedigree of someone like Osimhen, if you create adequate goal scoring chances, he is definitely going to score some. So, for me the midfield lacks creativity and it is affecting the output of the strikers,” he said.

He, however, said with the few chances being created, the strikers must be ruthless and clinical with every chance they get to secure wins for Nigeria against future opponents.

“If we continue like this, being goal shy, not being creative enough and converting our chances even when we have, then I don’t see us going far.

“But if we can do the needful, especially our midfield players, knowing that they need to be more creative, more goals will be scored and Nigeria will go far in the tournament,” he added.

Segun Bello, another football lover, blamed the lack of goals and creativity to the players putting themselves under pressure to deliver success at the tournament for the country.

He urged the players to be calm, play with ease and confidence and follow strictly the instructions of the Head Coach, Jose Peserio, to be able to perform better in the knockout stages.

He also called on Nigerians to be patient with the team and pray for them to succeed.

“I know many Nigerians are not impressed even though we qualified for the next round. But I also want them to know they will improve. It is because they are under pressure not to fail.

“I have no doubt Osimhen and others will still score but the midfielders need to improve their supply to the strikers,” he added.

Super Eagles to confront Indomitable Lions in Round of 16

Nigeria will battle Cameroon in the Round of 16 of the 34th  Africa Cup of Nations after the five-time champions edged The Gambia 3-2 in a see-saw group C finale in Bouake on Tuesday.

Between them, continental giants Nigeria and Cameroon have eight Africa Cup of Nations titles between them, with the Eagles champions of Africa in 1980, 1994 and 2013, while the Lions triumphed in 1984, 1988, 2000, 2002 and 2017.

Incidentally, Nigeria was the fall-guy for Cameroon’s first three wins, with the first of those coming right inside the same Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan that will host Saturday night’s Round of 16 duel. The Lions won 3-1, despite Nigeria going in front after 10 minutes through Mudashiru Babatunde Lawal.

In 1988, Nigeria felt cheated when Mauritanian referee Idrissa Sarr disallowed a goal by Henry Nwosu in the first half at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca. Emmanuel Kunde scored from the spot in the second period to win it for the Lions.

In 2000, as co-hosts, Nigeria fell behind 0-2 in a memorable final with goals from Samuel Eto’o and Patrick Mboma, before Raphael Chukwu Ndukwe and Jay-Jay Okocha restored parity. The Lions went ahead to win 4-3 after a penalty shootout at the National Stadium, Lagos.

The Lions successfully defended their title in Mali two years later, defeating Senegal on penalties inside Bamako’s Stade March 26, and then came from behind to edge Egypt 2-1 in Libreville in 2017.

However, Nigerians will remember with a song in their heart the Super Eagles’ triumph over the Lions in the quarter-finals in Tunisia in 2004, and in the Round of 16 in Egypt in 2019, as well as the 4-0 win over the neighbours in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Uyo in 2017 that paved the way for Nigeria’s qualification for Russia 2018.

In Alexandria in 2019, also in the Round of 16, eventual tournament top scorer Odion Ighalo scored two of the goals in a 3-2 win, with midfielder Alex Iwobi netting the winner from a fabulous assist by Ighalo.

Saturday’s encounter will begin at 8pm Cote d’Ivoire time (9pm Nigeria time).
