Super Eagles midfielder faces deportation from Denmark

Super Eagles midfielder Izunna Uzochukwu is to be deported from Denmark even though he has a girlfriend and wife living in the Scandinavian country.

Uzochukwu has played more than 200 games for FC Midtjylland and OB and has lived in Denmark for large periods of his life.

The Nigerian lost his permanent residence permit because he gave up his residence and his CPR number in Denmark in connection with his transfer to the Chinese club MZ Hakka in January 2018.

The midfielder has since appealed the expulsion from Denmark, and it has now been rejected, which means that he must therefore pack his bags and leave the country.

“I have my girlfriend and my daughter in Denmark, and I have almost lived in the country for 15 years. I feel really bad and I’m really stressed about it. I can’t do anything!” Uzochukwu said to bold.dk.

“I cannot live in Denmark now, and they are trying to get me out of the country because they have said no to the appeal.

“I don’t think it’s fair, and I’ve been waiting for more than two years. I can’t do anything, and I’ve had offers from other clubs that I’ve had to say no to.”

Uzochukwu argued that he was in Denmark several times during his time with the Chinese club but the visits were classed as holiday visits.

The Danish Immigration Board have insisted that the midfielder could not get a dispensation despite his strong connection to Denmark because he  did not have the same address as his daughter, and emphasized that the child was only born after he left for China.

    • Iwobi’s assist pivotal  in Fulham’s  five-goal win
    • Sor, Arokodare score in Belgium
    • Onuachu , Boniface fire blank

Super Eagles winger, Alex Iwobi put up another inspiring performance for Fulham in their 5-0 win over West Ham United at the Craven Cottage yesterday.

Iwobi who was at the thick of action for 79 minutes before he was replaced by Bobby Decordova- Reid gave an assist for the Cottagers’ second goal scored by Brazilian’s Willian in the 31st  minute.

Fulham who have scored at least three goals in their last four games made it five goals scored in their second consecutive game after they hit five again, against West Ham just like they did midweek against Nottingham Forest.

Iwobi got his 12th  game of the season and has already scored three goals.

In Turkey, Super Eagles Paul Onuachu failed to find the back of the net for the third straight game in all competitions for Trabzonspor but his Turkish Super Lig side beat Gaziantep FK 3-1 away.

Onuachu who featured in his 11 game of the season in the league has scored seven goals since his move to Turkey last summer.

His goals and general contributions have helped Trabzonspor to return to the fourth in the log with 26 points from 15 games.

Onuachu played for 74th  minute before he was replaced by Enis Destan.

But in Belgium, Yira Collins Sor and Toluwalase Arokodare were both on the score sheet for Genk in the club’s 3-1 away win at Eupen yesterday.

Sor netted his third goal of the season while Arokodare bagged his fourth of the campaign for Genk.

Sor, a former player of Slavia Prague and Banik Ostrava both in Czech Republic opened the game’s goal account in the third minute of the first half added time before Joseph Paintsil and Arokodare added theirs in the 56th  and 92nd  minutes.

Sor got his 10th  game of the season while Arokodare featured in his 17th  game.

Genk are fifth in the Belgian Pro League with 28 points from 17 games.

Meanwhile, Victor Boniface didn’t add to his eighth German Bundesliga goals from 14 games but he got the vital assist with which Bayer Leverkusen got the equaliser to settle a 1-1 draw at VfB Stuttgart yesterday.

Bayer Leverkusen had hope to capitalize on the Bayern Munich’s 5-1 collapse at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday but their hosts got other ideas.

The home team got the first goal in the 40th  minute through Chris Fuhrich but Bayer Leverkusen equalised two minutes into the second half through Florian Wirtz with Boniface having the assist.

With the draw, Bayer Leverkusen extended their lead at the top of the table to four points with 36 points from 14 games but they have played one more game than second placed Bayern Munich.

  • Five NPFL goalies good for Super Eagles

Five NPFL goalies good for Super Eagles

With the misfiring performance of the current crop of the Super Eagles goalkeepers in recent international engagements, TUNDE LIADI profiles  five goalkeepers in the Nigeria Premier Football League good enough  to man  the  post for the coach Jose Peseiro-led side.

Nigeria senior national team has produced goalkeepers of high quality in the past from   Inua Rigogo, Peter Fregene, Sam Ibiam, Emmanuel Okala, Best Ogedegbe, Peter Rufai , Wilfred Agbonavbare, Alloy Agu, Ike Shorunmu, to Vincent Enyeama .

All the aforementioned goalkeepers   etched their names in Nigeria’s football folklores so much so their exploits  are still being recalled  several years since they last played for the senior national team .

Enyeama was the last goalkeeper in that class of most valuable goaltenders  but  his exit  from the Super Eagles in 2015, coincided with the arrival of former Wolves goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme.

Ikeme was able to steady the ship in the aftermath of the forced retirement of Enyeama allegedly because of his face off with Sunday Oliseh, who was the then Eagles handler.

Sadly Ikeme did not last long as Eagles number one. He played just 10 games for Nigeria between 2015 and 2016 before he was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in July 2017. He was unable to make a comeback.

Ever since, the Eagles coaches have tried Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Daniel Akpeyi, Francis Uzoho, Adeleye Adebayo, Maduka Okoye among others without much to be cheered about.

Recently, Uzoho manned the Eagles post in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe and the friendly game with Saudi Arabia where he made costly errors to the chagrin of Nigerians.

Ahead of the  forthcoming  Africa Cup of Nations in Cote ‘d’Ivoire,  many  goalkeepers in  the diaspora have been tipped as likely replacement to the misfiring Eagles goalies with the  like o  Noah Onabolu, Sebastine Osigwe among others.

Yet the  Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL)  presently house  some  good goalkeepers  who giving the chance , can hold their own against  their  so-called counterparts  abroad.

Here,  we shall take a look at five of them who deserve a look in from the Eagles technical crew.

    OSAYI KINGDOM (Doma United)

Doma United goalie, Osayi Kingdom tower above all the goalkeepers in the NPFL this season with his fantastic saves   which have helped  the  Savannah Tigers  to a  touching distance in third position behind Remo Stars and Lobi Stars on the NPFL log.

Kingdom, a former goalkeeper of Mountain and Fire Miracles Ministries (MFM),  was reportedly  to be surplus to requirements at Sunshine Stars two seasons ago but has since  found home in Gombe with Doma United. He has kept 10 clean sheets out of just 12 games.

The goalkeeper was at his best for Doma United against Sporting Lagos, Remo Stars, Gombe United and Kwara United where he pulled several fine saves to keep clean sheets in those games played away from Gombe.

Kingdom is also the reason Doma United have the best defence in the league this season along with Bendel Insurance with just five goals conceded from 12 games.

    AMAS OBASOGIE (Insurance)

Bendel Insurance’s Amas Obasogie is another goalkeeper who has caught  attention  for his goalkeeping prowess. He was invited to the last Eagles camp as a late replacement for Maduka Okoye. His stats  for the Benin Arsenals showed the Super Eagles handlers never made mistake with his choice.

So far, he  has kept eight clean sheets from the 11 games and  was the Man of the Match when Bendel Insurance picked a valuable point in Kano against Kano Pillars.

    KAYODE BANKOLE (Remo Stars)

Another goalkeeper proving his mettle in the NPFL is Kayode Bankole of Remo Stars. Bankole is among the reasons the Sky Blue Stars are atop the league table. He has kept six clean sheets including his superb performance away in Aba against Enyimba where  Remo Stars ran away with a solitary goal victory. Remo Stars have the highest winning ratio in the NPFL this term with seven wins, two draws and three losses with Bankole contributing in no small measures to their successes.

    ADEWALE ADEYINKA (Kwara United)

Adewale Adeyinka , former youth  international and a member of the  silver-winning  Golden Eaglets at the 2013 CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco,  is pulling his weight  with  Kwara United.

Though the Harmony Boys are 13th  on the league table with 15 points, Adeyinka has kept clean sheets on four occasions including the blockbuster goalless draw against Rivers United in Port Harcourt. He was also in superb form for Kwara United in their 1-1 draw against Akwa United in their  last league game.

Incidentally, Adeyinka  is not new to the senior national team having received call up in the past especially for the Super Eagles B team which he was the first choice goalkeeper in the last CHAN qualifiers. Nigeria lost that ticket to the CHAN to Ghana.

    LUCKY ABDULLAHI (Lobi Stars)

Lucky Abdullahi is the first choice goalkeeper at Lobi Stars who has kept four clean sheets to help the Pride of Benue to the second spot on the table with 23 points.

He helped Lobi Stars to important points at Owerri against Heartland FC and in Katsina against Katsina United before putting up a great display in Yenagoa to ensure they beat Bayelsa United 2-1. Lobi Stars have helped to mould him to become one of the sought after goalkeepers and a little tweak on him will help transform him to a great goalkeeper.

  • Mosimane eyes Super Eagles coaching job

Mosimane eyes Super Eagles coaching job

Former South Africa national team coach, Pitso Mosimane, has declared his readiness  to coach a “talented team like Nigeria” at the FIFA World Cup, writes Mark Ogagan of amatrophics.com.

Mosimane is currently without a job after recently leaving UAE’s Al Wahda and media reportedly being  head hunted by Kaizer Chiefs FC.

However, in an interview with a group of journalists in Johannesburg, Mosimane said he would like to lead a national team and his sentiments suggest he is impressed by Nigeria.

The former Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns handler, said the Super Eagles of Nigeria have good and talented players.

The Kagiso-born serial winner noted that the West Africans want to qualify for the global showpiece and he seems to like Samuel Chukwueze and Victor Osimhen.

“To be honest, I would like to coach in the World Cup. I do not choose what comes, I would like to go to the World Cup. South Africa wants to qualify, Nigeria wants to qualify,”  Mosimane said. “If you have Chukwueze and the boy playing for Napoli as your striker, I mean really. That Nigerian team is unbelievable.

“I saw the draw against Lesotho and Zimbabwe. Okay, it’s football, it happens. But how can politics between the government and the federation derail the team?

“Of course, I want South Africa to win because I am South African. But in reality, I think Nigeria has the team, man.

“I really would like to go to the World Cup, but it must be a good team that can compete.”

Arguably the most successful African coach ever, Mosimane was voted CAF’s Coach of the Year in 2016 and won several trophies with Mamelodi Sundowns including the CAF Champions League. He achieved similar feats with Egypt’s Al-Ahly, winning the trophy twice before moving to Saudi Arabia.

  • Siasia laments ‘worrying’ Super Eagles’ problems

Siasia laments ‘worrying’ Super Eagles’ problems

Erstwhile Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia believes the current team under Jose Peseiro would not fulfill their potentiality without cohesion, adding the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) must ensure prompt payment of emoluments of the coaching crew and allowances of players for the team to bode well in the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

Speaking in his first major interview following the expiration of his ban by FIFA over alleged match fixing, the former Nantes striker said though the current team comprises quality players, they are not playing collectively.

“Like the majority of Nigerians, I am worried about the lacklustre performances of the Super Eagles so far,” the 56-year-old Siasia who guided Nigeria to a soccer Bronze medal finish at Rio 2016 Olympics, said in an interview with Sportsville, aired on Channels TV on Sunday.

He continued: “Struggling against countries like Lesotho and Zimbabwe is not a good sign of a team ready to win the Nations Cup and qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

“Let us not deceive ourselves, we cannot be the best in Africa with this disorganized team, our players must be made to understand what it means to wear the green-and-white jersey of the nation while the coach also needs to improve on his tactical approach.

“It will be too painful if, with the quality of players at our disposal, we don’t win the AFCON or fail to pick a World Cup ticket.

Read Also: Super Eagles need home based players, not Peseiro’s sack – Ekpo

“I was in Uyo to watch the Lesotho match, what I saw were players running around without a game plan, this does not speak well of a team that has so much potential.”

The 1994 Nations Cup winner urged the NFF to be alive to their financial obligations to the rank and file of the national team.

“We can do better by not owning the coaches, the NFF should do everything possible to ensure that issues of outstanding salaries are sorted out well before next year’s AFCON,” he stressed. “We must avoid any distraction to make the team concentrate.”

On his possible return to handle the Super Eagles, the Bayelsa-born coach, who had twice managed the national team albeit without remarkable success, said he will be open to such offers: “Nigeria is my country and I am ready to serve her to the best of my ability when the opportunity arises. Right now, I am set to attend a couple of coaching courses abroad in the coming weeks and when that is done, I will be readily available for any opportunity.”

  • WCQ: FG plans Presidential Task Force for Super Eagles

WCQ: FG plans Presidential Task Force for Super Eagles

Worried by Super Eagles‘ disappointing start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, SCORENigeria has gathered that the Federal Government is now studying the possibility of setting up a special Presidential Task Force to oversee the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign of the Super Eagles after a disastrous start in the series.

The three-time African champions got off after they forced Lesotho to a 1-1 draw at home in Uyo, before another 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in Rwanda three days later.

They are now third in Group C on two points with Rwanda the surprise leaders on four points, while South Africa have three points.

The Eagles will resume the qualifying tournament in June 2024 with a home game against main rivals South Africa, before a tricky trip to next-door neighbours Benin.

Officials said government is disturbed that the NFF are not capable of delivering a World Cup ticket and so the need for a Presidential Task Force to ensure that nothing is left to chance this time around.

Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar when they lost to arch-rivals Ghana on the away goals rule.

Both perennial West African rivals drew 0-0 in Kumasi, before the Black Stars held the Super Eagles to a 1-1 draw in Abuja in March 2022.

It would be recalled that a Presidential Task Force was set up to qualify the country to the 2010 World Cup, which was hosted for the very first time in Africa by South Africa.

  • 2026 FIFA World Cup: Experts offer Super Eagles way forward

2026 FIFA World Cup: Experts offer Super Eagles way forward

This is not the best of times for Nigerian football following the Super Eagles unimpressive start in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers under Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro. The three-time African champions had to come from behind to force both Lesotho and Zimbabwe to an identical 1-1 draw to the chagrin of Nigerians. Now in third place behind Rwanda and South Africa in a tricky Group C, notable Nigerian football personalities argued that the Portuguese coach had nothing to offer even as they point the way forward the Super Eagles in their quest to return to the Mundial after missing in action at the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.  OLALEKAN OKUSAN and TUNDE LIADI gauge the views of concerned football buffs.

That Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup is already hanging in the balance is an obvious fact as many football fans are yet to come to terms with the fact that Jose Peseiro’s side managed only two draws in their first two qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Despite assembling a squad made up of foreign legions against teams that are mainly local-based, the Super Eagles failed to shine and there faint-hearted  performance  did not go down well with generality of Nigerians   calling for the sack of Peseiro who they said has not changed the fortunes of the team since the exit of Franco-German Gernot Rohr.

Writing on his weekly column in a daily, former captain of the team Segun Odegbami lamented the struggle of the team against minnow like Lesotho.

“The Super Eagles of Nigeria played against the Crocodiles of Lesotho. Ordinarily that should not take centre stage in any sports conversation this weekend, beyond reporting the anticipated ‘massacre’ of the minnows from the Southern part of Africa. The sad story is that Nigeria ‘lost’ the match. Struggling to get a ‘draw’ in a match played on home ground, on the superb turf of the best football ground in Nigeria, the Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, must be counted as a ‘loss’,” he said.

Odegbami amongst other things particularly picked holes in the goalkeeping area of the team.

“The result of the match and the presence of a particular player in the team’s line-up interest me. Some two or more weeks before the match, the main discussion on several football platforms was on what was considered the ‘weakest link’ in the Super Eagles team – goalkeeping. Nigeria’s first choice these past few years, Francis Uzoho’s scorecard has not been very flattering. He may have recorded several heroics but the few gaffs, costly mistakes at crucial times, ‘speak’ louder.”

Luckily, the Bafana Bafana  of South  Africa’s shock  away loss to Rwanda has offered the Super Eagles  the chance to bounce  back to reckoning  when the 2026 World Cup qualifiers resume next year and for Nigeria international goalkeeper, Peter Rufai  said  the  Super Eagles  can pull their chestnut from the fire.

“The Super Eagles can still surprise us. Football is a crazy sport. I believe they can still turn things around and make Nigerians happy,” the 60-year-old, who was Nigeria’s goalie at the 1994 and 1998 World Cup finals, told NationSport. “It’s not a disaster yet. I expect the team to turn it around and qualify for the World Cup.”

Nigeria are now third in the Group C table, two points off surprise leaders Rwanda, who defeated  South Africa 2-0 in another Matchday Two encounter.

The Super Eagles missed out on a ticket to the 2022 World Cup following a play-off defeat by West African rivals Ghana on away goals.

Peseiro and his team now have several issues to resolve as attention turns to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which begins on 13 January next year before the World Cup qualifiers resume in June.

All the  six teams in Group C are separated by just one three points after two games. Nigeria host South Africa and travel to Benin in their next two qualifiers next June

Since taking over from Austin Eguavoen in 2022, Peseiro has won six and lost six of his 15 matches in the dugout.

His side has scored 31 times – with 10 coming in one game against Sao Tome & Principe – and they have conceded 21 goals.

The Portuguese oversaw Nigeria’s qualification for the Nations Cup, with their only points dropped coming in a home defeat by Guinea-Bissau; though they avenged the loss in the next game between both teams some days later.

Yet after falling behind against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, former Super Eagles stars Garba Lawal and Bob Osim believe that Group C is still open for Eagles to make it even as they urged the team to raise their game in their next matches.

Read Also: Super Eagles: NFF, stakeholders divided over  Peseiro

“I believe the Eagles can recover from the slow start as the group is opening,” Lawal, a midfield Trojan in his heyday said matter-of-factly. “If they are ready to do it, they can do it because nobody believes Rwanda can beat South Africa and Eagles have one of the best attacks in Africa.

“I believe the Super Eagles can do it but they just need to raise their game as the group is still open.”

Osim, on the other hand, said that the Eagles should not be ruled out of contention for the automatic slot in Group C.

“To qualify from the group, depend solely on the boys and I believe it is not over yet as the Eagles can still clinch the ticket,” Osim, the former Enyimba defender and current coach of Calabar (UNICEM) Rovers said. “Let us forget about the last two matches and forge ahead to win their next matches. They just need to understand themselves as a team by working extra hard and the group is still open.”

However, another former Nigeria international defender, Ifeanyi Udeze, lamented that Nigeria is now struggling against minnows in Africa.

“Are we supposed to be happy that the group is open when we cannot even beat Lesotho and Zimbabwe?” he asked rhetorically.

He added:  “ It is a shame that we were considered as a giant of Africa, and we are happy that we have to rely on other teams to win to be thinking of qualifying. What our players need to do is to just ensure they win all their next matches especially, the match against South Africa. It is a must win for us and our players must try to win all their next matches both home and away.”

Yet  others argued that  given the  fact that the squad boasts potent firepower such as Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface of Bayer Leverkusen, Taiwo Awoniyi of Nottingham Forest and Ademola Lookman, who now plays in Serie A for Atalanta, the Super Eagles should be a handful for teams like Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Former Super Eagle Duke Udi, who featured in qualifiers for the 2002 World Cup, said the technical crew must blend all parts of the team to work together and not just focus on the attacking quality.

“If any department is not functioning then it is the problem of the team because everyone has to work together,” he said in an interview. “It’s too early to sack a coach because he drew two matches; he has not lost.

“We are still on course for both competitions (the World Cup and Nations Cup). In Ivory Coast, anything can happen,” the former midfielder added.

But former captain and coach of the Super Eagles, Austine Eguavoen, has urged the team to change their mindset and character.

“Change in character and mentality matter a lot. We should approach every game like a final game, and we have all it takes to qualify. We must change our mindset against every team. Mindset and character matter for the team because I believe in this team,” he said.

Another area of the team which has received the most widespread criticism is the goalkeeping where Francis Uzoho has struggled to inspire confidence as the fans pilloried him for some of the team’s poor results in recent matches.

Peseiro gave his backing to the 25-year-old after two friendlies last month but Uzoho deactivated his social media account after the 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe on Sunday, where he was beaten by Walter Musona’s stunning long-range free-kick.

Fellow keeper Maduka Okoye also came under similar scrutiny after Nigeria’s quarter-final exit from the 2021 Nations Cup, a 1-0 defeat by Tunisia.

Rufai expressed his concerns about the quality of goalkeepers available for the Eagles but he said for things to work out well there is urgent need for a collective response from the team.

“Yes, we have a goalkeeping problem, but it’s not that we don’t have quality goalkeepers,” Rufai said.”They need to be courageous, they must be strong and not let the criticisms demoralise them. The entire team should rise up to the occasion.”

But Emeka Amadi, former Flying Eagles goalkeeper, wants the fans to rally round the team and forget about the draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

“Let us all motivate the team as they need our support and this will surely raise their morale in the next matches,” he said.

For Peter Nieketien, the team lacks a leader that can inspire them: “Among the present team there are no mature players in the team to motivate the players. The team lacked matured leaders that can motivate and inspire the team. So, they need someone like Ahmed Musa who is experienced to inspire the team.”

Also, Etim Esin, charged the players to be hungry to make it to the World Cup having missed the last edition in Qatar. “We did not qualify for the last World Cup and some of them are still young, and they must be hungry to play at the World Cup because this is the dream of every player.”

Despite the call for the sack of Peseiro, an executive committee member of NFF Nse Essien has come out to state that the federation cannot afford to offset the payoff of the coach if he is sacked.

“If you check the internet almost everyone is asking for the sack of the head coach,” Essien said in a video posted on X. “It’s unfortunate that out of six points we have just two and we find ourselves in a very precarious situation.

“When people say NFF should sack the head coach, we didn’t employ him, if you look at it, the Sports Ministry employed him and we were supposed to have paid their salaries but up till now they’ve not paid a dime.

“If you sack the coach now, who pays for compensation? So that’s where we find ourselves. Not a dime has been paid to this coach who is earning about $70,000 every month.

“We have to respect his contract but if we have the money to give to him we are definitely going to relieve him, we are not happy,” Essien said.

But in defense of their performance, Fulham of England star and a key member of the team Alex Iwobi, has pleaded with football fans not to give up on Eagles yet but continue to offer their support.

He however, expressed disappointment with the inability of Super Eagles to pick all three points against Zimbabwe after drawing the opening match in Uyo.

“We really feel disappointed not picking all three points from this clash with Zimbabwe. However, we are not going to dwell on this now but keep fighting on till the very end.

“I want our fans to stick with us as we will do our best and finish tops at the end of the campaign,” said the ex-Arsenal graduate.

Like Iwobi, Moses Simon has expressed confidence that the Eagles will bounce back in the qualifiers.

The Nantes of France striker expressed belief that the Eagles are capable of turning things around. “Not the result we wanted but we will surely bounce back.

“Big apologies to our fans, you deserve better than the performance against Lesotho and Zimbabwe,” he said. “We have overcome so many challenges in the past. And now is the time to reflect and come back stronger.”

Going into the break in the World Cup qualifying tournament, many are of the view that Rwanda has done Nigeria a favour after the East African side pummelled South Africa 2-0 in Kigali to become the new leader of Group C with four points from two matches.

South Africa are second with three points from the same number of matches while Nigeria now occupy third spot with two points from two matches.

The winner of the group is expected to secure an automatic spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada and Mexico.

The qualifiers will resume in June 2024 with Nigeria hoping to make up lost ground when they welcome South Africa to Uyo, before a tricky trip to face their Benin Republic counterpart being handled by former Eagles’ coach Rohr.

Peseiro can’t take Super Eagles to the World Cup – Timi Dakolo

Popular singer and songwriter, Timi Dakolo, has shared concerns and reservations about Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, expressing doubt about his ability to lead Nigeria to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Dakolo said this while reacting to Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Lesotho in the World Cup qualifier on the evening of Thursday, November 16.

Recall that Peseiro’s men drew 1-1 against Lesotho at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

Second-half goals from Motlomelo Mkhwanazi and Semi Ajayi ensured both teams shared a point each.

Reacting, Dakolo, in a tweet via his X account, branded the Super Eagles’ display as ‘very embarrassing.’

He tweeted: “Dear @thenff, this coach can’t be the best coach available for a country like Nigeria.

“This is very embarrassing. This man can’t take the Super Eagles to the World Cup. It is actually painful to watch.”

Nigeria will face Zimbabwe in their next World Cup qualifier on Sunday.

  • Eagles survive Lesotho scare in Uyo

Eagles survive Lesotho scare in Uyo

Westbrom of England defender Semi Ajayi became the saving grace for Nigeria’s Super Eagles after the coach Jose Peseiro-tutored side were forced to 1-1 draw by visiting Lesotho in the opening of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Despite setting up a heavily-attack-minded team against the visitors with Taiwo Awoniyi leading the charge while Kelechi Iheanacho and Victor Boniface provided support around the box, the Eagles were jolted in the 56th minute when a corner kick by Tshwarelo Bereng was converted by Motlomelo Mkwanazi to give the Leslie Notsi’s troops the lead to stun the Nigerian fans.

Touted as the favourites against the lowly Crocodiles but still they could not find the back of the net in the first half of the encounter.

True to the pre-match prediction, the Eagles were on the front foot from the blast of the referee’s whistle, with Awoniyi having a slight sniff of goal in the opening few minutes, but the Lesotho backline halted the chance.

Despite Eagles’ dominance, Lesotho’s goalkeeper was on holiday until the 34th minute when Iheanacho tested his palm with a well-struck free-kick.

A few moments later, Awoniyi missed another begging chance.

On the stroke of halftime, Ademola Lookman fired another effort at goal, but it was kept out as both sides headed for the dressing room at half time.

The Eagles came close to the opening goal early in the second half, but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock 56th minutes as Mkhwanazi beat goalkeeper Francis Uzoho with the Crocodiles’ first shot on target.

Nigeria needed a quick response, and this paid off in the 67th minute when Ajayi powered home a header off another fine Iheanacho corner-kick to hand Eagles the equalizer.

Despite mounting pressure on Lesotho’s goal, the Eagles could not muster the winning goal as the Eagles settled for a disappointing draw.

Nigeria will travel to Rwanda to face Warriors of Zimbabwe for their matchday two clash against on Sunday November 19.

JUST IN: Lack lustre Super Eagles force Lesotho to draw
