  • Samuel Chukwueze named among danger men of Egypt 2019

Super Eagles and Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze has been named among danger men of the 2019 Nations cup which kicked off Friday in Egypt.

Chukwueze who netted 10 goals in 47 appearances for his club last season has been likened to Dutch international Arjen Robben and tipped to rattle opponents at the slightest opportunity.

Also in the danger men list according to Dailymail are Ismaila Sarr of Senegal, Hakim Ziyech of Morocco and Youcef Atal of Algeria. Chukwueze’s potent left foot according to the report is likely to be defenders nemesis.

Nigeria begin their quest for a fourth Nations cup title today against debutants Burundi.

Analysts and fans alike who spoke with Sportinglife.ng ahead of today’s opener insist the Eagles with all their wealth of experience both at the World cup and the Nations cup should not find it difficult emerging from a group that has two debutants to the nations cup.

After yesterday’s opener between host Egypt and Zimbabwe, three matches are lined up today.  Nigeria square up against Burundi in Alexandria, DR Congo take on Uganda in Cairo while Guinea face Madagascar.

Welcome to Africa, the continent of possibilities. The continent with the largest number of footballers yearly heading to Europe, America and the Diaspora for greener pastures. On the dusty streets that litter the continent, young lads kick the ball. They model their game after their favourite stars. It’s quite a compelling sight watching Blues Angels FC kids, for instance, playing with aliases like Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo, Henry, Hazard et al even when such a combination don’t exist in club football or at the international level.

Most times the kids turn out for the game in bare feet, with some wearing stuffed stockings for boots to distinguish them from the upstarts. It is the cheapest game to run here, yet it attracts the largest followership anywhere.

In fact, the world waits with bated breath as the biggest soccer event in Africa takes the centre stage. For the next 28 days, football lovers will be glued to their television sets to see Africans who shone like a million stars with their European clubs showcase their talents with their national teams. European clubs’ scouts will be in Egypt, taking notes of new players who will accompany them back to Europe to be nurtured and exposed to the biggest stage in the game.

The European scouts, however, will have to look at rookies from countries in the 32nd Africa Cup of Nations, such as Burundi, Madagascar, Mauritania, Guinea Bissau, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Benin since the players in the bigger countries are stuck with long term contracts, even those whose contracts are coming to an end, already know what to expect from their clubs.

This large collection of seeming ‘minor’ countries in Egypt is a reflection of how well the game has grown in Africa, although many pundits have ascribed the dawn of rookies to the new 24-team format. Whatever the reason, one thing is clear – there will be new talents to celebrate at dusk on July 19 when the eventual winners of the 32nd edition of the Cup of Nations emerge.

Debutants, such as Alex Iwobi feel strongly  that Nigeria’s matches will be like wars. Iwobi is magical dribbler Austin Jay Jay Okocha’s nephew, but he insists that his dribbling skills aren’t necessarily from his uncle. He, however, acknowledges that his uncle influenced his decision to play football.

Iwobi said that: “Everyone is always going to say that on paper that we should go through, that we should qualify with ease, but we know it’s not going to be easy. Every team is in there to try and do their best, to try and win. It’s going to be almost like a war. It’s going to be a serious battle and fight. Every game is going to be really competitive.”

The 23-year old, when asked of Eagles chances in the competition, said: “We haven’t really discussed that as a team and we haven’t really put or point what we want to achieve, we all have this idea that we want to win and bring back the trophy. We are confident and working hard hopefully, we can do not just our self proud but the nation as well.”

“Even though it’s their first, they will come with a lot to prove, to show everyone why they had the chance to get into the Africa Cup of Nations,” he said.

The Super Eagles reached Alexandria on Monday ahead of the tournament which, began on Friday, 21 June. They will begin their campaign on June 22 against Burundi.

When the Super Eagles media team asked Alex Iwobi of his ‘’nutmeg skills’’, he replied: I’ll like to take ownership for this one. Okocha, my uncle, has got the skills but nutmeg, I’ll say this is my own ownership.

‘’It is something that just comes along. I don’t go into games thinking I am going to nutmeg someone; it just happens instinctively. Sometimes the easiest way for me to get past an opponent. I have been given the title, I

    can’t let my people down.”

Great things on Iwobi’s mind for Nigeria, which would invariably rub off on the Super Eagles. Nigeria’s first game on June 22 is against Burundi amidst talk of virus invading the camp leaving in its wake many of our top stars nursing various ailments. But, words from the camp on Wednesday poured cold water on the illness claim alleging that what struck the camp was a flu which left both players and officials blowing their nostrils. Such rebuttals are often taking with the pinch of salt.

It may be difficult to pinpoint one big player in Burundi, but they could become a banana peel if our players underrate them. With a transfer value of our players put at N78 billion, it will amount to one of the socks of the competition on June 22, if Burundi beats Nigeria in Group B’s opening game.

At the qualifiers, Eagles’ greatest weapons were strikers, with Odion Ighalo being the highest goal scorer. However, the team’s attacking onslaught has been questionable. perhaps due to Ighalo’s injury, although there are promising young strikers such as Chukwueze, Osimhen, Onwuachu and Henry Onyekuru. Eagles’ last four matches saw the striker scoring just a goal, which isn’t commendable. Ironically, the defence, which was suspect at the qualifiers is rock-solid, although with some slips which will be corrected now that the defensive pairings have been playing together. This has enhanced the understanding between the defenders.

No team wins matches without goals. Gernot Rohr should know that Ighalo, Chukwueze and Onyekuru will be marked. Rohr should play the strikers that are fit. He should not field those who shone in the past or because they are the highest goal scorer(s) in the qualifiers. Chukwueze, Onyekuru, Osimhen and Onwuachu did well with their clubs. They should be considered head of Ighalo, given the superiority of the European leagues over the Chinese, with due respect to the country’s league and Ighalo’s pedigree. Any team pitched against Nigeria will quiver a bit, if they see Ighalo on the bench. Eagles could exploit Ighalo’s experience if he mandates him to watch the game and see the loophole before introducing him in the course of matches.

Pundits will only believe Rohr’s mantra of parading a younger Nigerian side in Egypt by fielding the boys, not relying on experienced stars. John Mikel Obi’s return to the team will propel the Eagles’ attacking onslaughts since he knows what to do with the ball.

Mikel’s strength lies in his ability to win balls and spray defence-splitting passes. Our strikers should endeavour to free themselves from their markers to get the ball. That is the only way the passes from the midfield can get to them. Hiding behind defenders isn’t the hallmark of great strikers, such as Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rohr’s formations of 3-5-2 and 4-3-3 are quite commendable as they help our players with pace to outrun their markers when the passes are provided. It appears the strikers should be told to take scoring chances, which will not come in torrents.

Our players should be selfless during games. Balls should be given to the freest player to score goals. What counts are goals by teams, not missed chances or how well losing teams play. A midfield quartet of Mikel, Oghenekaro Etebo, Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi, if fit, would be a handful for teams to contend with.

Ahmed Musa, and two other strikers should convert the chances they create in today’s game against Burundi. Beating Burundi with as many goals as possible would send jitters round the other match venues that the Nigerians are in Egypt not for fun. Personal achievements don’t win trophies, but collective play efforts and understanding among the players do.

Nigeria’s fixtures are the best any team could wish for. The opening game against Burundi and the last against Madagascar, given the teams’ pedigree against the Eagles, should give Rohr the leverage to parade his strongest side against Guinea, knowing that two victories over Burundi and Guinea will fetch Nigeria the Group B qualification ticket. If this happens, the Madagascar tie will just be the icing on the cake and a platform for other players to have a feel of the competition.

Rohr will be happy he has fixed the team’s defence. But he will have no problem with the central defence, if Leon Balogun is fit. Rohr prefers the defensive pair of Balogun and Troost Ekong. He appears uncomfortable with pairing Kenneth Omeruo with either Balogun or Ekong.

It is good to know that Daniel Akpeyi is the first choice goalkeeper. What gives pundits hope is that Francis Uzoho can easily replace Akpeyi if he falters like he normally does under pressure. Uzoho kept the goal for Nigeria at the 2018 Russia 2018 World Cup, where he gained confidence with every game. Ikechukwu Ezenwa could also fit the bill, making pundits a little bit relaxed ahead of today’s game, unlike before the world Cup opener against Croatia, which we lost 2-0.

It is unfair for our players to think that Nigeria will be ranked underdogs in Africa. Most of our players have distinguished themselves with big European clubs, culminating in a net total value of N78 billion.

“If anybody says the tournament will be easy, it is a lie because it is going to be tough; it is going to be hot but I believe in the team we have; we have all it takes to do well at the AFCON,” Ighalo told the NFF media.

“Nigeria has a good team that can play in the semi-final and the final. As I said, we will not get carried away.

“We have a team that can even win the trophy if we work hard and if we give everything we have on the pitch, not saying had I known later. We have all it takes to win it but let’s just start with the first game, to the quarter-finals, semis, then we will see how it goes.”

“Anything I do in life, I like people to take me as an underdog because I like to surprise people and I like to take people unaware; that’s for me as a person,” he added.

“If they are taking us [underdog], it is very good because it won’t give the team more pressure. When the team has more pressure of winning this and that, that’s when you will start thinking of the final when you have not even played the first game.”

  • Efe Ambrose to Eagles: Focus on one match at a time!

As Super Eagles gear up to the kickoff of their 2019 Nations cup in Egypt against Swallows of Burundi on Saturday, holidaying free Agent Efe Ambrose has urged the team to focus on one match at a time as no two matches are ever the same and no two opponents are the same even with same set of players.

Super Eagles profile according to the former Celtic defender has risen to an all-time high and this should be an added advantage for the team.  “The national team has become a big brand and the popularity of the team keeps growing and I think this will be an added advantage. The Eagles should just focus on each game at a time and give every game its deserved attention not worrying over the entire group matches at the same time to avoid undue pressure,” he said

Ambrose who was recently released by EFL Championship Club Derby County after a short term contract believes Eagles stand a good chance of winning the nations cup but must resist the temptation to underrate any team including the debutants.

The 2013 Nations cup winner under late Coach Stephen Keshi, played five out of six games including the final which he started against Burkin Fasso at the 85,000 capacity FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

Some analysts say Eagles were handed a soft draw with two debutants Burundi and Madagascar with Guinea as the only opponent in the group with Nations cup experience having featured in the continental fiesta  over 11 times finishing as runners up in 1976 and as quarterfinalists on four occasions.

Despite wearing the toga of under dogs going into the opening match against Eagles on Saturday, Burundi Coach Oliver Niyungeko insists that the Swallows stand equal chance of success as every other team in the competition.

He said it is wrong to opine that debutants have nothing to prove as they have to prove that their qualification for the event is not fluke.

“My target is to ensure we do our best.  We have to compete and show that our qualification was no fluke. There are 24 teams and each has an equal chance and we are also part of that with an equal chance” he enthused

  • Samuel Chukwueze: I am determined to do well in Egypt

Super Eagles Winger Samuel Chukwueze says he is not distracted by interest shown by some clubs for his services, insisting his focus is on doing well at the Nations cup in Egypt on one hand and playing well for his La Liga side Villarreal on the other.

The 20-year-old who emerged as one of La Liga’s brightest young talents during the 2018/19 campaign, said though it is natural to attract media attention if one is doing well in the round leather game, it is important not to allow such attention become a distraction.

He expressed satisfaction with his club performance so far revealing that breaking into the regular squad of villareal did not come on a platter.

“It is just like a dream for me to break into the first team of Villarreal this season.

“I am so grateful to God and the club. I was so happy about my first goal.

“I was very happy and have scored more goals since that time. I felt good scoring against Barcelona too. I thank God for everything.” he said in a chat with Tribalfootball

Villarreal, who paid only 500,000 euros for Chukwueze a season ago, are reportedly holding out for 63 million euros for any club that wants to sign the left-footed winger.

Chukwueze who ended the season with 10 goals and 4 assists across all competitions had impressive runs against heavy weight clubs including Real Madrid and Barcelona in the course of the season.

Among clubs hoping to ultimately land the Nigeria U-17 ace include Premier league Champions Manchester City and Champions league winners Liverpool. An impressive run at the Nations cup is sure to further raise the profile of the winger who made his debut for the Super Eagles on 20 November 2018 as a starter in a 0–0 friendly draw against Uganda at the Stephen keshi Stadium Asaba.

  • FIFA RANKING: Eagles drop three steps to 45

While several of the biggest names in international football have made significant gains in the latest edition of the FIFA World Ranking, Nigeria’s Super Eagles fell three steps down the rung to 45 from the 42 obtained in the last ranking in April.

The three-time African champions are still number three in Africa behind Senegal and Tunisia.

Globally, Belgium remains in the first position, continuing their reign at the top by increasing their advantage over France in the second position.

Their grip at the top position follows UEFA EURO qualifying wins over Kazakhstan and Scotland. There is plenty of movement elsewhere in the top 20. Portugal (5th, up 2), for example, have moved into the top five on the back of their UEFA Nations League triumph, while the Netherlands (14th, up 2) have edged upwards after reaching the final of the same competition.

A trio of former world champions is also on the rise. Spain (7th, up 2), Germany (11th, up 2) and Italy (14th, up 3) have all ascended the global ladder on the back of positive results in the EURO qualifiers.

There are plenty of success stories elsewhere, too, with the likes of Austria (26th, up 8), Northern Ireland (28th, up 5), Czech Republic (41st, up 7), Hungary (42nd, up 9), Armenia (97th, up 9) and Malaysia (159th, up 9) racing up the ranking. There is also reason to celebrate for Senegal (22nd, up 1) and Kosovo (121st, up 6), both of whom are currently in their highest position to date.

  • No dull moment as Super Eagles tour Suez Canal in Egypt

All work and no play it is said makes Jack a dull boy! Perhaps that explains why Super Eagles, who have been shaping up for the forthcoming Nations cup, took time Friday to tour the Suez Canal in Egypt.

The Eagles who are expected to take on Taranga Lions of Senegal on Sunday in a friendly match before the main competition appeared to have thoroughly enjoyed the guided tour of ever popular Suez Canal, as players and technical crew alike were beaming with smiles and reliving their experience.

The Gernot Rohr led team revealed the excursion in their official twit, revealing “We took time off our tough #TotalAFCON2019 training routine this morning to go on a tour of the Suez Canal in Ismailia. Very pleasant experience” An equally excited Rohr posed for photograph with the captain of the cruise ship.

The Suez Canal is a sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez. Constructed by the Suez Canal Company between 1859 and 1869, it was officially opened on 17 November 1869.

The canal in recent time has become a major tourist attraction and a must visit for most visitors to the land of the Pharaohs.

One thing most visitors to the Suez Canal look forward to is an enjoyable taste of fresh seafood.  Here you can pick out your choice of the freshest catch of the day, then relax while the fish is cooked to perfection or pay for your goods by weight ready to take home.

  • Eagles, Warriors settle for goalless draw in Asaba friendly

Super Eagles of Nigeria and Warriors of Zimbabwe Saturday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium settled for a goalless draw in one of the shape up matches ahead of the Nations cup in Egypt.

Both teams qualified for the continental fiesta and were impressive but cautious in the friendly tie that saw many fans troop out to watch defying the heavy down pour in Asaba.

Although the Eagles especially in the early minutes of match attempted to rattle the Warriors, the visitors held their ground proving that indeed their qualification was no fluke.

Coach Gernot Rohr had prior to the match declared that it was not about winning or losing but using the match to see to the readiness of the boys he is taking to the land of the Pharaohs.

He had also said that players who were a bit rusty in their clubs will be given opportunity to play and prove themselves.

One of the players some had looked forward to playing in the match was Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho who unfortunately did not play.  But team Captain John Obi Mikel was in superlative form leaving no one in doubt that he is ready to lead the squad to yet another Nations cup.

Rohr is expected to drop two players from his current 25-man squad in camp before heading to Egypt where the team will play the last friendly against Taranga Lions of Senegal before diving into the competition proper. The Warriors of Zimbabwe will battle host Egypt, Uganda and DR Congo in the group Stage, while the Eagles have dates against Guinea and two tournament debutants Burundi and Madagascar.

The warriors will open shop against hosts Egypt on June 21 in Cairo while the Eagles will begin their quest against Burundi June 22 in Alexandria.

  • AFCON 2019: 20 players train in Asaba

Twenty  players participated in the Super Eagles’ training session at the Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba Delta State on Monday.

The training was supervised by the team’s head coach, Gernot Rohr and his assistants.

Odion Ighalo, Alex Iwobi, William Ekong, Ahmed Musa and Shehu Abdullahi were still expected at the camp.

The three-time African champions trained twice on Monday. The first session started by 10am, while the second began at 4. 45pm.

Super Eagles’ captain John Obi Mikel, who is making his return to the team after he last played for the national team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, was among the players that trained yesterday.

The first phase of camping will kick off with a friendly game against equally Egypt-bound Warriors of Zimbabwe on June 8.

The team will spend a full week perfecting tactics and strategies, before taking on Africa’s number one-ranked team Senegal in another friendly in Ismailia.

Speaking on the team’s first training session, the Team Coordinator, Patrick Pascal said the team had a delightful training session.

“Everybody is happy to be back in the team and there is sign of seriousness from all of them. They are all ready to give their best. The first training session was just a minor training session for the players and by tomorrow we should begin full training to perfect tactics and strategies. We have 20 players in camp now and we are still expecting the remaining four players any moment from now,” Pascal told NationSport.

Rohr announced a list of 25 players, most of them foreign-based that will be pruned to 23 before departing Nigeria for Ismaila, Egypt for their final camp ahead of the tournament.

  • Hopeful Kelechi Iheanacho hits Eagles camp in Asaba

Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho joined the Super Eagles camp in Asaba on Monday for the last lap of the team’s preparation for the Nations cup in Egypt.  The former Manchester City ace who has been having minimal playing time with the Foxes will no doubt be hoping and praying to have a place in the team and thus have a chance to once again show that he is capable of making a difference.

The 22 year old who joined the Leicester on a five year deal in August 2017 has for a long time been used as late substitute, sometimes playing just for few minutes to the end of matches.

His fortune at the King Power Stadium in recent times is direct opposite of that of his compatriot and teammate Wilfred Ndidi who is not only a regular but enjoys the benefit of playing full 90 minutes most times. Kelechi who made over 46 appearances for Manchester city scoring 12 goals before joining Leicester, has made about 51 appearances for the Foxes with four goals to his credit.

Despite what has been dubbed his limited playing chances at the King Power Stadium, some insist believe he still stands a good chance of proving himself adding that his invitation to the national team ahead the Nations cup should serve as another opportunity for him to make a statement on the pitch.

An Impressive player while representing the country in the junior category especially at the FIFa U-17 World cup in 2013 where he won the Golden Ball award, kelechi made his senior debut as a substitute in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Swaziland in which Nigeria drew 0–0. His first start for the senior team was on 25 March 2016, a 1–1 draw with Egypt in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has insisted that Kelechi needs to play more to have a chance of making the final team to Egypt. The Eagles are scheduled to play a shape up friendly with Zimbabwe June 8th at the Stephen Keshi Stadium with Kelechi and others all hoping to justify their inclusion in the squad.

  • Kanu gives condition for Super Eagles triumph in Egypt

Former international Nwankwo Kanu has tipped Eagles to win the Nations cup in Egypt adding however that the players must have champion’s mentality and put the entire arsenal in their armory into the project.

The former Arsenal forward noted that the standard of the Nations cup has continued to rise with every edition and maintained that the Eagles have all it takes to surmount every challenge by opponents at the event.

“Eagles can win the nations cup in Egypt why not?  The boys just have to work hard and think like champions, put everything into it and I am optimistic they can make it,” he enthused.

The two- time African Footballer of the year however resisted the temptation to underrate any of the contending teams including the debutants noting that every team that qualified for the Nations cup just like the world cup cannot be dubbed a pushover and as such should not be treated with kid gloves.

After missing the last back to back editions of the Nations cup, the Super Eagles are returning to the event and aiming to increase Nigeria’s victory at the continental diadem to four.  Nigeria last won the title in 2013 in South Africa under late coach Stephen Keshi.

A school of thought believes that the Eagles have been handed a soft draw with two debutants Burundi and Madagascar in the group.

Some analysts have however warned the Coach Gernot Rohr tutored side against having a mindset that the new comers will be a walk in the park.

Eagles begin their campaign in Egypt against Burundi on June 22nd followed by a tie against Guinea on June 26th with the last group match against Madagascar billed for June 30th.
