  • Rohr identifies handicap of local players

*says FIFA ranking will take back seat in Russia

Absence of modern facilities has been identified as the greatest handicap of local players in their attempt to compare with their counterparts in Europe.

Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr made the submission while reviewing Nigeria’s qualification for the world cup, contribution of players both home and abroad to the feat achieved so far, noted that foreign based players have the privilege of playing and training with the best of facilities which brings out the best in them while their counterparts at home face lots of challenges which hamper their development and affect their output.

“The local players’ have a lot of challenges no doubt about that, and it is bound to affect their output and standard.

Their counterparts who play in Europe for instance have the benefit of training with the bests of facilities and when you are determined to excel and also have modern facilities to train with it serves as a major boost,” he said

Rohr, who is expected to dish out his final 23-man squad for the world cup after the Wimbley friendly against the Three Lions of England on June 2nd, said he is looking forward to a good competition in Russia with a team that is united, determined and confident. He dismissed permutations in some quarters that Nigeria may not emerge from her group considering that all her opponents viz Croatia, Iceland and Argentina rank higher on the FIFA log going into the world cup.

“When you are on the pitch you don’t remember ranking what you ought to focus on is having a good competition putting you very best aiming to emerge victorious and that is the desire of every team heading to the World cup.  We had an excellent fighting spirit during the qualifiers and we intend to maintain that spirit so we don’t bother about ranking,” he enthused. Argentina are the highest ranked in Nigeria’s group by March 15th ranking at number 4 in the world behind Germany Brazil and Portugal, Croatia are ranked 15, Iceland on 18 and Nigeria on 52. Three more rankings are however expected by April 15 and May 15 respectively before the kickoff on June 14 in Russia.

The 32 qualified countries according to FIFA are expected to dish out their provisional squad of 35 by May 14 and the final squad of 23 by June 4.

  • Brands court consumers ahead of 2018 World Cup

The Nigeria Football Federations have lately attracted a lot of corporate and brands goodwill on the back of the Super Eagles’ qualification for the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup, with the likes of TomTom, Star, Amstel Malta, Coca-Cola, Payporte and WAPIC signing long-term sponsorship agreements with the governing body to connect more deeply with their various consumers, hence grow brands equities.

TomTom and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) recently signed a three-year contract that confers TomTom as the Official Candy of the Super Eagles. TomTom, a product from the stables of Cadbury Nigeria Plc has supported the Super Eagles for a decade.

At a joint media parley to announce the partnership and official signing of the contract, the Managing Director of Cadbury Nigeria Plc. Mr. Amir Shamsi said, “we are delighted to announce TomTom as the official candy of the Super Eagles. This year makes it the tenth year since we first announced this valued partnership in 2008. We are proud to say our partnership with the Nigeria Football Federation and by extension; the Super Eagles of Nigeria is not a coincidence. It remains a deliberate effort by Cadbury and TomTom to connect with Nigerians and their passion for the beautiful game.”

According to the Category Marketing Lead, West Africa, Mrs Uwadiae Chidinma, “TomTom is a candy with a purpose. It delivers soothing relief and mental invigoration. It has remained relevant over the decades despite other competitive offerings in the market. TomTom is undisputedly one of the most ubiquitous brands in the country.”

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Mr. Amaju Pinnick, lauded Cadbury Nigeria and revealed that the NFF will work in tandem with TomTom and leverage on the partnership to bring glory to the national teams at every tournament. Pinnick said, “We are grateful to TomTom for being a backbone of all our national teams. TomTom is a premium brand from Cadbury Nigeria Plc.”

Clamouring for support, the Brand Manager, Candy West Africa, Mr Aruleba Olumide said “Cadbury Nigeria Plc, are happy to support the Super Eagles. We urge all Nigerians to go all out and support the Eagles cheering them to victory. TomTom loves the Super Eagles.”

Also NFF and Nigerian Breweries also signed a five-year contract worth N2.2 billion aimed to support Nigerian football. Both parties happily called ‘a minimum five-year contract.’ At the premises of the brewing giant in Lagos, laced with laudable innovation and flowing remarks by Amaju Pinnick, NFF President and Jordi Borrut Bel, NB Plc’s Managing Director/CEO pledged the total commitment of their establishments to every letter of the contract.

This is just as the NFF President restated his position that NB Plc is ”an organisation that has been a torchbearer of excellence and corporate social responsibility for the several decades it has operated in Nigeria.”

The agreement makes Star Lager the ‘Official Alcoholic Drink of the Super Eagles’ while Amstel Malta is now the ‘Official Malt Drink of the NFF and the National Teams,’ including Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup-bound Super Eagles.

For Coca-Cola and its bottling partners, Nigerian Bottling Company Limited NBC, delight to have unique opportunity to connect with the consumers through partnering with FIFA on World Cup Trophy Tour that would see the trophy touch 91 cities and 51 countries, spreading happiness and psyching up the people to get ready for what is unarguably the greatest sporting fiesta coming up this year in Russia.

The Managing Director, Nigerian Bottling Company Limited, Mr. George Polymenakos said at a media parley that heralded the arrival of the FIFA World Cup Trophy in Nigeria for the third time that NBC and Coca-Cola would always be committed to bringing happiness and refreshment to Nigerians. The Super Eagles will face Croatia, Iceland and familiar foes Argentina in Group D of the World Cup in Russia.

  • Super Eagles’ friendly: A post-mortem

The noise from the social media after Nigeria beat Poland in Wroclaw penultimate Friday was deafening. It was as if the Super Eagles lost the game, with paralysed analysis bothering on the people’s primordial sentiments on how the team should look. Chief among the complaints was the clamour for Vincent Enyeama’s return, even when  we know that he has been inactive in Europe this season. The submissions gave the impression that they would rather have Enyeama in goal with a walking stick than allow Francis Uzoho man the goalpost in Russia. Let me not say what have gone down in the social media since Eagles lost 2-0 to Serbia in England. Everyone talking about going to the drawing board to plot new tactics. I wonder if this board isn’t in tatters.

The friendly matches against Poland and Serbia were meant to test the players and see how they would fare against countries that have similar playing patterns and mentality like the Croatians, Nigeria’s opening game opponents at the Russia 2018 World Cup on June 16. Besides, the two matches were meant to expose the team’s lapses so that the coaches could find the right players for weak positions. I’m glad that both games served the purpose, with the tie against Serbia showing that Eagles’ regular back men have no substitutes. It is also not too late to look for reliable defenders to rival the first team players.

Enyeama was awesome with the Eagles. When Adegboye Onigbinde told us (Nigeria sporting press) in Japan that he was fielding Enyeama ahead of Ike Shorunmu in Nigeria’s last World Cup game against England at the Korea/Japan World Cup, many wondered  if he could stop David Beckham’s free-kicks. Enyeama kept a clean sheet in that game. The rest is history.

What these analysts don’t know is that Uzoho will only gain experience playing games such as the one against Poland. The essence of friendly games is to correct mistakes. Most teams at this time are work-in-progress, like the coaches say. It is worthy to note that Rohr listed Uzoho in the Serbian game, making the goalkeeper know that his fate doesn’t lie with what critics say but how the manager rates him – boosting his confidence.

Two balls slipped through the defence into the net. The first which happened in the Poland game was debatable. But the slip in the first half against Serbia was a good goal. Rohr needs to warn his defenders and Uzoho that such slips would be captured by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) machine, which wasn’t used in the two matches. On the score of 10, I will rate Uzoho 7, as a first timer in such high profile matches.

Sticking to Uzoho underscores the importance that Gernot Rohr attaches to using this Mundial to give Nigeria a team that would have a lifespan of 10 years, which is what Clemens Westerhof did when he started rebuilding the Eagles in 1990. Nigeria is going to the Russia 2018 World Cup with the youngest squad. Nobody is casting any doubt on the players’ ages because most of the players pledged their allegiance to Nigeria from other countries, although they have Nigerian parentage. It simple means that their ages are incontestable, how being born in Europe. We are tired of always rebuilding Eagles after every failed expedition. The drawing board we always refer to after every aborted trip must be tattered now.

It is obvious that many players have lost their shirts, given their contributions in the last two games, especially the one against Serbia, which we lost by two goals. Rohr must dig deep into his bag of tactics to evolve a system that would make the players play at their best. The only consolation is that Nigeria’s last group opponents at the Mundial, Argentina were whacked 6-1 by Spain. I know many pundits would say that the results would have been better if Lionel Messi had played. Hmmm! The same excuse when Nigeria beat Argentina 4-2 last year in Russia. Failure beckons, if Argentina’s coach must be told the truth.

Rohr, happily, isn’t perturbed by the defeat. He gambled on Ahmed Musa to lead the team’s attack, which is normal for friendly matches. It didn’t work. He played Awuziem in place of injured Leon Balogun; it was catastrophic. Oguenyi Onazi was lost in the game just Victor Moses, who apparently played to avoid injuries. The results of friendly games will count for nothing, when the chips are down during the Mundial. Balogun’s absence  in the team’s  defence showed when the Serbians launched their onslaughts. They effectively utilised Eagles’ weakness to play aerial balls, especially from set-pieces. Rohr should find a way to play Ola Aina regularly. He is big and strong, scared and plays regularly for Hull City in the English Championship, even though he is a Chelsea star on loan. Aina can dash forward to score like he does with Hull City.

Moses appears unable to carry the fortunes of the team, if marked like we saw against Serbia. Perhaps because Ivanovic, the Serbia captain, knew him – they were mates at Chelsea. One word- Moses isn’t Eagles messiah at the Mundial. Eagles, don’t have any undertaker in the mould of Lionel Messi (Argentina) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Neymar (Brazil), Thomas Muller (Germany), Paul Pogba (France), Hazard (Belguim) et al. I’m scared to pick Wilfred Ndidi as Nigeria’s undertaker because he lacks the World Cup experience. He isn’t also a prolific scorer for the Eagles, unlike the aforementioned players in their countries.

Alex Iwobi looks like the man to do the creative job for the team at the Mundial, only if he is told so now. There is an obvious reason for that. Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr may have an exciting young squad to take to Russia but he hardly has creators like Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Iwobi is perhaps the nearest the Super Eagles have to a playmaker. He certainly looked like their best hope for a goal as they laboured against a disciplined Serbia.

A few people would argue that John Mikel Obi’s contributions were missing. True, but Mikel still needs a younger player, such as Iwobi to use his passes and dribbling runs to attract markers to him. This way, openings would be created for goals. Eagles’ midfielders in the two matches were tentative in their displays, with none of them willing to seize the initiative of being match winners reminiscent of the Nwankwo Kanu and Austin Okocha era.

With a dysfunctional midfield like we saw in the two matches, there is no way the strikers can work. Strikers are best utilised if the defence-splitting passes are there. They would find it easier to run into space to receive such passes, where the midfielders can dribble to unlock the oppositions’ defences. Our players’ resort to long balls to unlock defences was poor tactics as it rendered the strikers otiose. The manager needs to either look for the players (I wonder if there is the time) or find a better pattern of play that will bring out the players’ best qualities.

‘’Nigeria may have come away from Barnet licking their wounds, though it was largely to do with a youthful defence incapable of taming Aleksandar Mitrovic and the woeful display of Ahmed Musa as a central striker,’’ Standard Sports newspaper of England wrote on Wednesday.

“Rohr commended the boys and urged them not to drop their heads because no football team in the world wins all their games,” Eagles spokesman Toyin Ibitoye said.

“The coach told the team they should learn from this defeat but not suck, but rather go back to their clubs and keep fighting. He said what was most important after such a loss is how you react, he said we have to bounce back.”

“The coach reminded the boys that they have not been doing badly as a team and what has happened should be put behind. He said it is a game and they have done their part and should forget the rest. We have three more friendly matches to play before the World Cup proper. Ours is to take the positives from the Serbia game, study them critically and implement,’’ Ibitoye said.

It is good to know that NFF chieftains are on the same page with Rohr and the team. Amaju Pinnick’s statement underscored the need for all the parties to work towards getting Nigeria into the quarter-finals. At that stage, anything is possible, especially if Nigerians rally round the team. They could spring surprises.

Pinnick wrote this writer in a terse reply to an inquiry about his thoughts on the game: ‘’Trust me, it was a good preparatory game against Poland, for instance. We are satisfied. You learn more when you lose matches and learn less when you win games.

‘’I must congratulate Serbia for giving us a good game, which helped to expose the weaknesses of our team. This is the essence of playing such friendly games. The coaches have taken notes and we expect good reaction from them in subsequent matches before the World Cup proper in Russia.’’

  • Eagles ready for World Cup despite loss to Serbia – Dalung

The Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung on Wednesday said that the Super Eagles loss to Serbia does not mean that the Nigeria team was not prepared to excel at the coming World Cup.

Super Eagles had on Tuesday lost 2 – 0 to Serbia in a friendly encounter in preparation for 2018 World Cup slated for Russia.

He said “I’m quite confident of the Super Eagles. We mustn’t win every match before we can say we are prepared.”

The defeat, he said, will only put the team on their toes towards achieving good outing in Russia.

On the progress report given to FEC, he said “The major highlights of the achievements of the Ministry of Sports are the democratisation of the national federation by the ministry as a policy trust. I have gone a long way by improving performances in sports. It has also rebuild the confidence of our athletes which is giving the Ministry the desirable results we are having.

“Before 2017, the situation in the national federations where the Minister had the power to apoint 150 board members and these were seen as political appointments which were counterproductive to the progress and development of sports and we have overcome that.

“We also analyzed national federations and their performances one after the other and of course it has been harvest of medals since the reforms in the national federations.

“Then we looked at the issue of youth development where the ministry has reviewed the national youth policy which was reviewed last since 2009 and we presented to council for approval and we looked at youths empowerment programmes of the Ministry which trained 400 young people in 2015 and 500 have been trained in 2018 in agro allied services including physical and leadership training. “We also brought to council the progress recorded in National Youth Parliament youth training program where 109 young people are selected from the 109 senatorial districts in the country and are constituted into a parliament to discuss the issue of young people.

“Before coming onboard, the programme has been abandoned for a very long time and we resuscitated it. We also informed council about the last national council of sports meeting which we withdrew the hosting right from Calabar which has been with the right since 2012 and has been unable to host the festival. The festival now will take place in November this year in Abuja and the Federal Government is hosting.

“We also tried to draw the attention of the Council on the need for an effective synergy between the MDAs to be able to address the youth question which is more or less growing like a tsunami and if due attention is not given to it, we will likely have problems.” he said

  • Super Eagles ready for World Cup despite loss to Serbia – Dalung

The Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, said on Wednesday the Super Eagles 0-2 loss to Serbia in a pre-World Cup friendly played on Tuesday in London would not affect the team performance when the tournaments gets underway in Russia in June.

The defeat, he said, would only put the team on their toes ensuring a good outing in Russia.

  • ‘I’m sad & frustrated’, says Mikel

Are you wondering what could have made Super Eagles Skipper, John Mikel Obi unhappy with himself?

The Nigerian International on Monday took to the social media to express his sad mood.

Sportinglife.ng however gathered that this is not unconnected with his absence for the Nigeria national assignment which he has been invited for.

You would recall the Midfield maestro was included in the 28 man Super Eagles team list for this month’s friendly but failed to turn up due to delay in sorting his work permit in China.

He was obviously not available Nigeria’s game against Poland on Friday and he could not contain his feeling as the senior football national team gets set for their second international friendly ahead of Russia 2018 World cup.

Mikel in a statement on his official twitter handle wrote; “Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond my control I will not be on the field for our game v Serbia tomorrow (Tuesday). I am sad, and frustrated, but giving my full support to the team for another WIN!” #SoarSuperEagles  — Mikel John Obi

Nigeria will play against Serbia in an International friendly at the Hive Stadium, London, Tomorrow at 7:45 pm. The team is currently training in London.

  • Eguavoen wants two formations for Poland, Serbia

As Super Eagles file out in a matter of hours against Poland in an international friendly as part of the build up to the Russia 2018, former coach of the team Austin Eguavoen says it will be more productive to use different formation against Poland and Serbia.

The approach according to him will offer the technical crew ample opportunity to see which formation brings out the best blend and projects the best flow. The former Eagles captain revealed that he is not focusing on seeing the team emerge victorious at the friendly matches but more concerned with the blend, the level of understanding among players and the flow of the game all of which will be needed when the battle of supremacy begins in Russia in June.

“I am not the coach and I am sure he knows what he is looking at and hopes to achieve with the friendly games, but in my own opinion it will be better to resist the temptation to use the same formation against Poland and Serbia. I will rather go for two different formations to enable you properly see which formation brings out the needed flow and blend that you will require in Russia. I am not too particular about result, even if you don’t win when you play well you will know,”  said Eguavoen a.k.a Cerezo

While team captain John Obi Mikel, Junior Ajayi and oghenekaro etebo are expected to miss tonight’s match billed for the Muncipal Stadium Wroclaw, the trio will be available for the tie against Serbia Tuesday in London which implies the technical crew will have the full complement  of entire crop of players penciled down for the World cup.

Most soccer fans who bared their minds ahead of the friendlies say a win against Poland tonight will ginger the team going into the second friendly against Serbia and serve as general morale booster.

Other matches on the bill board before the Eagles storm Russia are ties against Czech Republic and England. Eagles’ world cup opponents Argentina are also locked in a friendly tonight against Italy who unfortunately will be missing the world cup for the first time since in 60 years. Croatia who will be Nigeria’s first hurdle in Russia are equally shaping up with friendly matches against Peru and Mexico respectively with Iceland also facing Mexico to tidy up loose ends.

Poland are 6th on current FIFA ranking while Nigeria are 52 on the log.

  • Football stakeholders call on Super Eagles to win Poland friendly

Fidelis Ilechukwu, coach of MFM FC told the News men that their expectation was nothing short of victory.

Ilechukwu, who described the Super Eagles as very vibrant and youthful team, said a win over Poland would boost the team’s morale.

“If we win, certainly, the following opponents in the other friendlies will be cautious.

“They will know that we are prepared for the World Cup and indeed, ready for any team in the world,” he said.

Also speaking, Akinade Onigbinde, coach of FRSC FC said the match would be a good test for the Super Eagles.

Onigbinde expressed confidence in the fitness of the Super Eagles to crush Poland, adding however that this would be possible if only they could work as a team.

Yusuf told the News men he was making his declaration on the basis of the fact that the Italy-based striker has had impressive appearances for his club.

He described Obi as a utility player whose experience was highly needed in the Super Eagles.

“Joel Obi is a very good player right from the beginning, and he was outstanding the few times he played for Super Eagles.
