Hard work, dedication, key to Rangers success – Okpala

Sylvanus Okpala, Rangers International FC  of Enugu coach, says the secret to the team’s success in the Nigeria Professional  Football League (NPFL)  matches are hard work, dedication, and God’s grace.

Rangers are currently placed 8th on the table with 52 points after 36 matches in the league.

Okpala, a former assistant coach of the Super Eagles, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone that the team was determined to end the league on a good note.

“We are still on and we are not leaving any stone unturned, we are going on to the end of the season.

“We are determined to finish the league on a good note. We have two games to play,” he said.

Okpala, also an ex-Rangers midfielder, said the team would give desired attention to the Aieto Federation Cup while playing the remaining league matches.

“As we play the league, we will give equal attention to the Federation Cup. We will not underrate any team,” he said.

He said some of the players had injuries while four travelled abroad for trials.

“We are trying our best with what we have because some of our regular players are down with injuries while four travelled abroad for trials. It has not been easy, but we are doing well with what we have,” the coach said.

Okpala assured fans and supporters of the club that they will not disappoint them.

Emeka Akabueze, an ex-Rangers winger, commended Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state for assisting the team to achieve good results.

“ I thank the governor for assisting the team, especially in the appointment of Sylvanus Okpala as the coach and Christian Chukwu as the General Manager.

“ The team will not disappoint and I want all fans and supporters to continue to believe in Rangers,” he said.

  • Cameroon clash: Ebonyi fans give praises, knocks to Super Eagles list

Cameroon clash: Ebonyi fans give praises, knocks to Super Eagles list

Some soccer fans in Ebonyi have expressed mixed feelings over the calibre of players invited by Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr for the World Cup qualifier against Cameroon.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Rohr invited 23 players to camp for the encounter billed for Uyo on Sept. 1 and Yaounde on Sept.4.

The list consists of 22 foreign based players and one home-based player. He also placed on standby seven players made of four foreign-based and three home-based players.

The fans told NAN that retaining the entire team that fell to South Africa in an AFCON 2019 qualifier in June was suicidal while others reasoned otherwise.

Bright Ibe, former Chairman of the Nigerian Referees Association (NRA), Ebonyi Chapter, said that Rohr would have invited players with requisite experience for the clash considering Cameroon’s pedigree.

“Players such as Godfrey Obaobona, Efe Ambrose, Nnamdi Oduamadi, among others, should have been invited to avoid the lethargic performance of the youngsters paraded against South Africa.

“Cameroon as African champions are buoyed by its FIFA Confederation Cup escapade and can only be dismantled by an experienced side,” he said.

Benson Imagwe, defunct Ebonyi Angels Goalkeeper, faulted the retention of Daniel Akpeyi in the team after a poor display against South Africa.

“Fans are still nursing the pains caused them by Akpeyi’s performance against South Africa. His matter is worsened by his loss of first-team place in his South African club, Chippa United.

“Rohr should have invited the CHAN team and Plateau United goalkeeper Dele Ajiboye for the clash,” he said.

Princewill Udoh, a lecturer, also faulted the retention of some players, especially in the defence.

He said that the defence might be an “easy pie” for the rampaging Cameroonian strikers.

“Chidozie Awaziem and Elderson Echiejile outing against South Africa was poor and the matter is worsened by the absence of another natural left-full back to cover Echiejile.

“Rohr is only left with the option of fielding untested players such as Mikel, Agu, Ola Aina, among others; the situation is dicey,” he said.

Chief Sebastine Elem, a retired public servant, however, said that the coach was right to select the players because the time was too short for changes in the team.

“The Eagles would have less than one week to train before the match and it will be difficult for Rohr to field players that are new to him.

“He wants to give the players an opportunity to correct the South African poor showing but we would have wished for a lesser opposition than Cameroon,” he said.

Judith Odoh, a female musician and soccer enthusiast, noted that the return of players such as Victor Moses, Odion Ighalo, Mikel Obi, among others, would definitely strengthen the team.

“Soccer fans should support the team because the team even if deficient cannot be changed overnight,” she said.

    Ex-Internationals commend Cowbell Football Academy

Former Super Eagles and FC Barcelona defender, Gbenga Okunowo has commended the Cowbell Football Academy for having a successful summer camping. He further suggested that other companies to join in the sponsorship of the academy, as there are various talents that are discovered.

He revealed this at the final ceremony of the 2017 Cowbell Summer Camp at the National Stadium, Surulere Lagos.

According to Okunowo, it will be a good idea for more coaches and scouts to come into the academy and select players for the age-grade national teams.

“I believe that the Cowbell Football Academy is good for development of the kids, as it is a foundation for those that are going into professional football in their future. I commend Godwin Dudu-Orumen for this initiative. If other companies can also join in the sponsorship this and other projects that develop kids football, it will be good.

The kids have been kept busy for the past three weeks and this is a foundation for the U-15, U-17 and U-20 competition.

“We did not enjoy this luxury in our days, and it will be good for the kids that are here now to utilize this chance. I will also suggest that more scouts come in here to select players that will represent the country.

Similarly, former Super Eagles player and Shooting Stars coach Franklin Howard expressed delight at the academy. He urged Cowbell to keep the good work going.

“I see quality players here and I am impressed. I appreciate Cowbell for this good work and hope that they keep it up. This summer camp has been a success, better than last year’s edition, and I expect more next year”

The event rounded up with awards presented to the most valuable player of the summer camp, won by Obinna Ogbon, Stephen Keshi prize for Outstanding player in leadership qualities, won by Oprah Ogbona

Vincent Essien, a parent who participated in the football match, before his son substituted him was also happy with the Cowbell Football Academy. is like a family tradition. “My son has been part of Cowbell for the past four years, and it has been a good one. I will just say that this is the best way to develop sports in the country.”

  • Bosso faults NFF criteria for national teams recruitment

Bosso faults NFF criteria for national teams recruitment

Nigeria Football Coaches Association (NFCA) has frown at the criteria and standard used by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for the employment of new coaches to the vacant national team jobs.
NFF had advertised that the interested applicants should apply for the national teams coaching job with U-17, U20, U23 male and female categories, with at least CAF C license certificates as minimum requirements.
But the association president, Ladan Bosso said the criteria requested by the NFF for the vacant jobs are too low.
“We have categories of national teams; so also we have categories of coaches in this country too – that is the standard all over the world. So we will advise the NFF through the technical Committee that they should categorize the coaches according to the national teams’ categories,” Bosso told
    .
“We have over 150 coaches with CAF B license in the country and we have over 300 coaches with CAF C license while we have 45 coaches with CAF A license. So therefore, we expected that the applicants for the head coach of the U-17, U-20 and U-23 must possess CAF A license while their assistants should have at least CAF B licenses.
“The assistants’ coaches of the U-20 and U17 should possess CAF B and C licenses respectively with vast experiences. We as an association ready to accept responsibility for the coaches’ performances good or bad if the NFF yield to our advice.”
  • Moses scores as Arsenal secure comeback win to lift Community Shield

Moses scores as Arsenal secure comeback win to lift Community Shield

Super Eagles striker Victor Moses on Sunday scored a goal for Chelsea but unfortunately it was not enough as Arsenal secured a comeback win to lift the Community Shield at the Wembley Stadium.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Community Shield is the season’s traditional “curtain raiser’’ which pitted Premier League champions Chelsea against FA Cup winners Arsenal.

Arsenal has won the trophy three times in four years.

Moses had opened scoring for Chelsea early in the second half after a goalless first half which saw both sides unable to convert their goal scoring opportunities.

Arsenal were caught off-guard at the restart as Granit Xhaka ballooned a clearance from a corner high in the air.

But Gary Cahill flicked it back into the middle of the box as Moses timed his run to perfection, creeping through to drive in from close range and slotting the ball past Petr Cech in the 47th minute.

The goal was Moses’ first for Chelsea in 27 games. His last one came against Tottenham HotSpurs in November.

NAN reports that the Super Eagles’ midfielder, Alex Iwobi, also had a decent performance for Arsenal with some nifty footwork, going closest to scoring in the 49th minute after twirling his way through a couple of players before getting his shot off in the mark.

But the shot was weak and straight at goalkeeper.

He was, however, substituted in the 67th minute alongside Arsenal’s new signing Alexandre Lacazette who also came close to scoring with a shot that hit the post in the first half.

Oliver Giroud and Theo Walcott were introduced as their replacements as Arsenal desperately went in search for the equaliser.

With 10 minutes left to play and just as Chelsea looked poised to win, the game unfortunately took a twist of fate as Chelsea went down to 10 men.

Pedro Rodriguez went late and high with his studs up on Mohamed Elneny.

Referee Bobby Madley had a little think and then pulled out the red card as Antonio Conte expressed his displeasure at the referee’s decision.

It was indeed a crazy couple of minutes for Chelsea as straight from the free-kick conceded by Pedro, Arsenal equalised in the 82nd minute.

Granit Xhaka’s delivery was headed in powerfully by new boy Sead Kolasinac.

There were just 82 seconds between Pedro’s red card and Kolasinac’s goal.

Kolasinac became the first player to open his goal account for Arsenal in the Community Shield since Gilberto Silva in 2002.

It was certainly dramatic and cranked up the atmosphere in the closing stages.

The game, however, ended in a 1-1 draw and went straight into the lottery of penalty shootouts.

With the game going straight into penalties, the Gunners showed their superiority; scoring all their four kicks, while the Blues could only put in one.

Thibaut Courtois and new club-record signing, Alvaro Morata lost their kicks.

Sunday’s win extends Arsenal’s unbeaten record to 9 at Wembley

It was indeed a turnaround as Arsenal secured their first trophy of the season, beating Chelsea 4-1 on penalties.

The Nigerian international has missed over half a dozen games of the side including missing the Super Eagles 2019 Nations Cup qualifiers against South Africa which Eagles lost 2-0 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state in June.

Compatriot and teammate Brown Ideye was equally not listed in Saturday’s tie which saw hosts Guangzhou Evergrande leave victory song late, grabbing three goals in 13 minutes including in the four minutes of added time.  Gao lin, Ricardo

Goulart and Shang Wenzhao accounted for the goals in the 81st 90th and 94th minute respectively.

Tiajin Teda are struggling to leave the relegation zone with 15 points in 18 matches even as fans of the side continue to pray and express hope that their captain returns to action to hold the midfield and help remedy the situation.

Elsewhere Odion Ighalo saw 90 minutes action against Obafemi Martins’ Shanghai Shenhua though Martins was an unused substitute in the tie that ended 1-1

Saturday’s victory has seen Guangzhou Evergrande further consolidate on their strong hold at the summit of the 16-team log with 41 points in 19 matches.

Kano to offset Super Eagles bill as team storms state

  • LMC hammer for ‘chairman’ Christian Chukwu

LMC hammer for ‘chairman’ Christian Chukwu

Former Super Eagles coach and current General Manager of Rangers international has been suspended from all league activities pending his appearance before the Ethics and Disciplinary committee.

The League management Company (LMC) that is yet to find a perfect solution to crowd trouble at match venues despite the use of banishing to neutral ground and playing behind closed doors, revealed the decision on the social media Friday, just as Rangers prepare to face ABS away on Sunday.

“Rangers General Manager, Christian Chukwu has been suspended from all NPFL activities with immediate effect pending his appearance before the Ethics Committee of the NFF,” LMC announced via twitter on Friday.

The suspension which takes immediate effect is not unconnected with his alleged role in the sacking of Rangers former coach and Super Eagles assistant coach Imama Amapakabo.

Amakapabo who led the Flying Antelopes to win the NPFL title last season after 35 years in limbo, was shown the exit door following strings of poor run afterwards. Christian Chukwu who was appointed subsequently as  General manager of the club did not hesitate to throw out the coach even as the club’s poor run failed to halt.

The LMC had referred the case to its Ethics and Disciplinary Committee adding that the referral is in pursuant to the provisions of Rule C17.5 of the #NPFL Framework & Rules”

Rangers who were sent packing in the early stages of the CAF Champions league have continued to struggle in the local scene, occupying the 14th position on the log with 39 points in 30 matches. Rangers will be going into Sunday match fresh from a 2-0 home victory against second placed MFM.

  • Disu warns Rohr on tactics against Cameroon

Disu warns Rohr on tactics against Cameroon

Tunde Disu, former Technical Director, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), on Sunday warned Super Eagles coach Genort Rohr against wrong tactics against Cameroun in the Russia 2018 qualifiers on September 1.

Disu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the team’s tactical formation against South Africa in the AFCON qualifiers was wrong and should not be used again.

He said that the Eagles loss to Bafana Bafana in the AFCON qualifiers was due to wrong tactical formation, adding that the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun would be more tactical.

“The formation used by Rohr during the AFCON qualifier against South Africa is wrong tactics. He cannot use a supporting striker as an arrow head when using 4-3-3.

“Rohr should know that Kelechi Iheanacho cannot spearhead attack, that is not his role and that is why he is roaming about during the match against South Africa without a shot at goal.

“I want them to sit down and analyse the match themselves, that system is faulty because most teams can now predict the formation. If we use that selection and tactics, we will be embarrassed.

“Rohr should align with the modern tactics of play rather than stick with the old play which will not benefit us. We are too predictable now.

Disu said that the players at the disposal of Rohr were good enough to accommodate another formation which was less probable to opposing teams.

“We cannot continue to use the 4-3-3 formation, it’s outdated and counterproductive. We should rather play 4-2-3-1 which is far better for the defenders.

“The players determine the system and not the system that determines the players. It is better to have two defensive midfielders in front of the defenders, maybe if there is an overlapping one.

“Playing 4-3-2-1 formation also means that we need intimidating strikers like the late Rashidi Yekini to torment the opposing teams. We have Gbolahan Salami before but I don’t know if he is not called.

“The lone striker may be very tall and strong to hold the ball up as his midfielders while full-backs join him in attack. The striker could also be very fast.

“African soccer is more physical and there is need for us to have a strong striker in the manner of Salami that can torment the defence of our opponent,’’ he said.

Disu warned Rohr to be wary of Cameroun threat could pose to the Eagles’ qualification, adding that a loss to Indomitable Lions would close the qualification ticket.

“I want the coach to be careful with the Cameroonians so that they will not scuttle our chances; any defeat to them closes the qualification ticket.

“It does not matter where we are now because we won’t be begging Cameroun to lose any of their games after defeating us.

“The Indomitable Lions are in form now and they are using the modern formation. Rohr needs to change that formation or else we will be out of contention.

“To beat those indomitable Lions, a very good top 9 will be a good option and not necessarily to score goals but to torment the defence line and maybe to create chances for others,’’ he said.

Disu said that other countries and clubs have been winning through the golden formation, noting that countries that had yet to play the style were lagging behind.

“I want to give the example between Spain national team and the Germans. The Germans are more tactical in their formation and are not playing false 9 like their Spanish counterparts.

“The golden formation continues to have the upper hands. In these cases, the opponent’s defense will be forced to fall back early, thereby leaving space for the offensive central midfielder.

“Rohr does not need to inject fresh blood into the team but play within what he has to achieve better results. We are blessed with players that can suit the golden formation.

“The coach should also have two options in which he can switch and Iheanacho should drop back for a strong striker for him to be effective,’’ he said.
