Eagles vs Lions clash will be war-Balogun

Super Eagles and FC Mainz 05 of Germany defender Leon Balogun, has predicted that the forthcoming 2018 World cup qualifier between Nigeria and Cameroon will be full of fireworks.

Performance of the Indomitable Lions at the recently held Nations Cup in Gabon is an indication that the Lions have become extra formidable and compact. Emerging victorious at the event he further noted has given the team a huge boost which is likely to rub off on all competitions they will be involved in this year.

“Cameroon are a strong side and winning the Nations cup in Gabon has no doubt added to their confidence level, the match will not be cheap “he said

Balogun who will clock 29 by next month however expressed optimism that the Eagles will pick the three points at stake. The odds according to former Hannover 96 ace favour Eagles who will not only be playing at home but will be playing in Uyo where the fans have fallen so much in love with the national team to the point of playing the 12th player.

Eagles will tackle Cameroon August 28 with the return leg billed for September 2nd in Limbe. Super Eagles take on Corsica on May 26 as part of the shape up for the series of qualifiers. Corsica is an island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the 13 regions of France.

At the club level Balogun’s Mainz are on the 14th position in the 18-team German Bundesliga with 33 points in 31 matches. Fresh from a 1-2 defeat at home by Borussia M’gladbach Mainz will next face Hamburger SV on Sunday.

  • Youths urge FG, Lagos to reclaim sports centre

Gowon Estate youths have appealed to the Federal and Lagos State Governments to reclaim the only Sports Centre in the Federal Housing Estate in Ipaja, taken over by land grabbers.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ground where the youth engage in sports, including a football pitch, has been turned into a sprawling mini-housing estate by the grabbers.

The ground has also produced great footballers for the country, including Taiye Taiwo of the Super Eagles and Marseille FC of France fame. He is currently playing for Swiss club, Lausanne.

The land grabbers apportioned the land and were building residential mansions, while shopping malls had been completed and a factory still under construction also.

The Youth Leader, Eghe Ogunbor, told NAN that the government and the community leaders were to be blame for the sale of the land.

“I will blame the government and the community leaders because they were here when the field was taken from us.

“We tried our best as youths but we didn’t have their backing as some of them were against us.

“The community leaders, instead of working in tandem with us, induced some youths to create another faction just because of what they got from the sports Centre sale.

“They succeeded in scattering our joint effort to retrieve the sports centre,’’ he said.

Ogunbor added that from the point the centre was hijacked, the youth took to vices.

“The centre before now was used by youths in the sprawling estate to train in various sports but since it was taken from us, the reverse is the case.

  • Super Eagles vs Burkina Faso friendly for June

Super Eagles vs Burkina Faso friendly for June

    • Nigeria Visa hitch for new invited foreign pro
Plans are underway to play the botched friendly between the Super Eagles and Burkina Faso, in June at a yet to be decided venue in France.
Last month, the friendly between the two West African countries in London was called off because several Burkina Faso players were not granted entry visas to the United Kingdom.
According to a Glass House source that prefers anonymity,  the friendly has been reviewed and “There is now a plan to get the Eagles to play Burkina Faso in Paris but the issue now is the date for this friendly.
“You know that the Eagles will take on Corsica at the end of May before they face South Africa in Uyo in an AFCON qualifier in June. So, the Burkina Faso game would be between these matches or after the South Africa game.”
The Stallions of Burkina Faso finished third at this year’s AFCON in Gabon. They are 35th and fourth in Africa in the FIFA Rankings, while Nigeria are 40th and fifth in Africa.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles Manager, Gernot Rohr’s desire to have the  duo of Tyronne Ebuehi and Noah Bazee for the qualifier against South Africa in June  may be hampered by Nigerian visa hitches.
Ebuehi has a Dutch passport as he was born in the Netherlands, while Bazee holds a German passport.
Both players were part of the Eagles training squad in London last month, but they are yet to get Nigerian passports which will allow them play competitive games for the country.
Both of them could have played in last month’s friendlies without a Nigerian passport because those games in London were not official games.
But for the AFCON qualifier against South Africa in Uyo, they will need to have secured their Nigerian passports by then.
“Rohr is getting a bit agitated over the fact that the likes of Ebuehi and Bazee do not have a Nigerian passport. That’s one of the major reasons he wants the Eagles to fly into Abuja in good time from their training base in France so that the players will process their Nigerian passports,” the source  said.
  • Champions League: Musa dreams action against Athletico

Champions League: Musa dreams action against Athletico

Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa will be hoping to taste action when Leicester City faces Atletico Madrid in the quarter-final of the Champions League on Wednesday. The Nigerian international who has missed a number of matches in recent times was handed a 29 minutes playing time against Everton on Sunday. Although the foxes lost the match 4-2 it was a good platform for the former CSKA Moscow ace to get back into action.

Leicester City head to the Spanish capital for the first leg of their quarter-final tie aiming to keep alive their latest fairytale adventure, which has seen them, become the first Champions League debutants to reach the last eight since 2013.

Standing in their way is an Atletico Madrid side that has become specialists in this competition in recent years, reaching two of the last three finals and looking good value of late to improve on that record further.

Shakespeare’s magic has not only paid off domestically but also in Europe, as he masterminded a 2-0 second-leg win over Sevilla in the previous round three weeks on from the 2-1 reverse in the opening 90-minute tussle  to ensure that

Leicester became the eighth side from England to make it this far.

Leicester have been dealt a big blow in the build-up to the match with the news that influential skipper Wes Morgan, so important in their run to the last eight, will almost certainly miss out with a back injury.

Yohan Benalouane will therefore continue to partner Robert Huth, aiming to improve on a shaky performance produced at Goodison Park on Sunday when being left exposed a number of times.

Danny Simpson, Christian Fuchs, Wilfred Ndidi and Riyad Mahrez were among those to be rested from the off in that defeat on Merseyside last time out, all of whom are expected to now be restored to the starting lineup on Wednesday.

Atletico have Filipe Luis and Gabi back in their ranks after sitting out their last European outing through suspension.

Leicester and Atletico are not exactly strangers, having met in a European tie on four previous occasions – the first round of the 1961-62 Cup Winners’ Cup and then in the 1997-98 UEFA Cup.

Paul Hamilton for burial April 28

Former Super Eagles coach Paul Hamilton would be buried on Friday April 28, according to his family.

The eldest daughter of the former Super Falcons coach, Christe Hamilton, said the two days programme will start on April 27 and ends April 28.

According to her, the wake-keep, service of songs, lying-in-state as well as entertainment of guest would be held at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

Christe said her father would be laid to rest at the Ebony Vault, Ikoyi, Lagos on Friday April 28.

She said the family has reached out to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to be part of the programme, adding that the family want the NFF to responsible for the their father’s casket and Vault while the family would take care of the entertainment.

“Our father would be buried in Lagos. We decided to bury him in Lagos because of the mammoth crowd that would wants to be part of the programme. His home town can’t occupy that crowd. Although, we are yet to see any official of the NFF to come and greet us since our father died but I went to Abuja to inform the officially about our father’s demise. All we want from NFF is to take care of the casket and Vault. We have submitted Ebony’s invoice of N4.5m requested to the NFF. We want a befitting burial for our father,” she said to SportingLife.

However, the president of the Nigeria Football Coaching Association, Ladan Bosso has promised the family that he and his colleagues would accord the late coach his due respect.

Bosso made the promise when he paid a condolence visit to the family last Saturday in Lagos.

  • Iheanacho gets 17 minutes as Man City returns

Iheanacho gets 17 minutes as Man City returns

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho was in action for 17 minutes as Manchester city beat relegation threatened Hull city 3-1 on Saturday to get back on track. The victory is coming after the Pep Guardiola side had gone four premier league games without a win. Iheanacho came in as late substitute in the 73rd minute replacing David Silva. The tie had opened with an own goal from Ahmed Elmohamady putting the hosts ahead at the Etihad Stadium before Sergio Aguero and Fabian Delph secured three important points in the race for Champions League qualification. It was Aguero’s 28th goal of the season.
Hull, who had gone into the game with confidence after successive victories, were outplayed but managed a late consolation when City’s recalled goalkeeper Claudio Bravo allowed an Andrea Ranocchia shot to slip through his grasp.
Until then it had been a quiet return for the Chilean, who was dropped in January after a series of poor performances and conceding six goals from six shots faced in back-to-back games against Everton and Tottenham.
Again, Hull’s goal came from their only shot on target. The criticism of the 33-year-old will continue although the keeper could claim his view was obscured by John Stones.
It was a unique outing for Silva who was making his 300th appearance for the club, he volleyed over and Sterling had another effort blocked which otherwise would have further increased the tally.

  • Sports Minister meets Buhari on World Cup qualification, others

Sports Minister meets Buhari on World Cup qualification, others

The Minister of Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalung, on Thursday updated President Muhammadu Buhari on the efforts of the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Dalung, after a closed door meeting with Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said he also briefed him on other developments in sports.

The Minister said that the president was informed of the election of a Nigerian into the board of Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Amaju Pinnick, President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), defeated the President of the Football Association of Benin Republic, Anjorin Moucharafou, to secure a seat on CAF Executive Committee for the 2017 to 2021 cycle.

Pinnick’s election makes him the third Nigerian ever to sit on the CAF Executive Committee.

According to Dalung, “I updated him on the need for us to intensify our mobilisation efforts for the World Cup qualifier. Although we are topping the group, it is not Uhuru for us. We need to do more.

“I drew his attention to the fact that we have received the Queen’s Relay baton which kick-starts the mobilisation for Commonwealth Games in Queensland, Australia in 2018.

“The baton is a Commonwealth tradition which is always flagged off by the Queen and she did that in March and it has been to six African countries with Nigeria being the seventh and it will proceed from here.

“The significance of the baton is its wake up call to countries to begin to prepare for the games.

“And we as a country had always performed very well in the games. There is a need for us to try and surpass our records in the next Commonwealth games.”

The minister disclosed that the president appreciated the briefing and congratulated Pinnick for clinching the seat of the executive member of CAF and the progress so far made in sports.

According to him, the president promised to do everything possible to support sports generally.

  • Ndidi: I’m 200% with Leicester City

Ndidi: I’m 200% with Leicester City

Super Eagles and Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has denied reports linking him to a possible transfer to Manchester United.

An online website, ‘Own Goal Nigeria’ , had on Thursday claimed that the 20-year-old would ask for a transfer away from the King Power Stadium if the Red Devils came calling, quoting Hakeem Bello, a ‘friend of Ndidi’s agent’.

However, the £15m January signing categorically denied the reports on his twitter account @Ndidi25, saying he is “200 per cent” committed to the Foxes.

The Nigeria international also denied knowledge of anybody called Hakeem Bello who claimed to be his agent’s friend.

“Please be informed this information is not true, I’m 200% with Leicester and I don’t know this person called Hakeem Bello.” Ndidi tweeted.

Ndidi has impressed City fans and pundits since his arrival from Genk, providing steel in the centre of the park alongside Danny Drinkwater, and popping up with two excellent strikes against Derby and Stoke.

  • Simeon Nwankwo: I’m not ready for Super Eagles

Simeon Nwankwo: I’m not ready for Super Eagles

Simeon Tochukwu Nwankwo fondly called Simy has not been in the thick of action for FC Crotone in recent weeks after copping an injury soon after scoring his first Serie A goal in the 3-1 away loss to Atalanta early this year; and he would be the first to admit that his performance is below par and has no worry that the Super Eagles’ Franco-German coach Gernot Rohr has not looked into his direction for international duties, reports MORAKINYO ABODUNRIN.

A year ago, Simeon Tochukwu  Nwankwo -simply known in the football world as Simy- was undoubtedly, the name on the lips of followers of the Portuguese Pro Liga as he fired on all cylinders scoring goals with remarkable ease; and deservedly  was crowned as the top scorer with an impressive 22 goals at the end of the season.

FC Crotone by the way, are struggling in their debut season in the Italian Serie A despite being one of the oldest clubs in Italian football. The Calabria-based side, according to an online encyclopaedia, was founded in 1910 as Milone Crotone and participated in several minor leagues including Prima Divisione (which later would be known as Serie C).

Following World War II, a new club, Unione Sportiva Crotone replaced the previous one, playing seven seasons in Serie C but the club was relegated in 1963 to Serie D and they returned to the third division the following year, remaining there for fourteen consecutive seasons, missing promotion in 1977 when finishing third behind Bari and Paganese.

In 1978, following the Italian football league reorganisation, Crotone was relegated to Serie C2 and the following year was declared bankrupt. A new club, Associazione Sportiva Crotone, began competing again in the Prima Categoria (eighth division). Crotone was promoted to Serie C2 in 1984–85, but only for one season. The team’s name was changed to Kroton Calcio, and the club was promoted again to C2 after the 1986–87 season, where it played until 1991.

A second bankruptcy led to the foundation of Football Club Crotone Calcio with Raffaele Vrenna as chairman, starting in the Promozione (7th level); Crotone gained successive promotions to Serie C2 and C1, winning in the play-offs against Locri and Benevento, respectively.

Under Antonello Cuccureddu, Crotone first reached Serie B in 2000, returning to the second level two seasons later. Again, in division two in 2004, after disposing of Viterbese in the promotion play-offs, it remained in the category until the 2006–07 season.

After being beaten by Taranto in the 2008 play-offs, Crotone returned to the second division the following season, defeating Benevento. The team was promoted to the Italian top flight (Serie A), for the 2016–17 season for the first time in its history.

The club’s stadium is reportedly named after Ezio Scida (with a capacity for just 9,547-seats), probably the club’s biggest football star, who died in a car crash at the age on 30, on his way to an away game in 1946. The town’s most famous son is Rino Gaetano, one of the most appreciated Italian singers and songwriters, was also killed in a car accident at the age of 30, in 1981.

Crotone adopted his greatest hit Ma Il Cielo E’ Sempre Piu’ Blu (“But the Sky Is Always Bluer”) as their anthem and it is performed at the stadium ahead of every game.

Though the sky is yet to be ‘bluer’ for Simy at FC Crotone as he struggled with his goal scoring form while the club wallows in the relegation zone, he was of the opinion that there are still reasons to be happy.

“I have no regrets whatsoever for leaving Portugal to Italy,” stated Simy in his usual philosophical hue. “In fact, the experiences I have gained here in Italy have been nothing short of outstanding; Serie A is a top league in the world and having the opportunity to play here is wonderful.

“Yes, we (FC Crotone) haven’t done well but ‎this is football; we still have games left to make a push and finish the season strong. It won’t be easy to say the least but we are working really hard in training and confident we can pick up vital points in the coming weeks.”

Unfortunately, Simy has not been in the thick of action for Crotone in recent weeks after copping an injury soon after scoring his first Serie A goal in the 3-1 away loss to Atalanta early this year.  He would be the first to admit that his performance is below par and has no worry that the Super Eagles’ Franco-German coach Gernot Rohr has not looked into his direction for international duties.

“Frankly, I’m not ready for the Super Eagles and I’m not expecting being called up since I’m not playing regularly now for FC Crotone,” admitted the multi-tasking Simy who has person for music; internet and charity. “Though I should have been (invited) in the past, I believe things will be different next season; I’m in a new country and a new league of a higher level and standard.

“So, I’m going through my period of adaptation; it has been difficult bu d at the same time a wonderful experience because it helps in making me a better person and player; the objective now is to develop my game further and always be ready to help my team,” he explained.

In the meantime, Simy has been   very active away from the pitch by ploughing his resources and energy to his pet project, The TNF- Tochukwu Nwankwo Foundation.

A guy with deep-thought about philosophy of life, he said he has long imbibed the spirit and letters   of Gamaliel Bailey (1807-1859), the American journalist who stated inter alia: ‘Never respect men merely for their riches but rather for their philanthropy; we do not value the sun for its height but for its use.’

The TNF according to Simy, was created to show gratitude to God for blessing him so much and also an opportunity to share with the down trodden in the society, adding this charitable gesture would rather cement his career than being a distraction.

He explained: “Yes, I agree with you that most footballers usually set up a foundation on retirement but I started TNF   now rather than later owing to the numerous encounters I have experienced with regards to immense hardship and suffering in our respective communities,”

“You will be astonished to know the number of less fortunate youths in my local government (Orumba North LGA of Anambra State) that are in need of assistance and guidance today; this is what has propelled me to start this initiative now.

“God has been faithful to me and I envisage using TNF as a platform to inject faith, hope and charity into our communities. When I came for the last Christmas holidays, I came across a 4-month-old child that’s in critical condition with no access to finance to get treatment.; this is just one of many examples of why it didn’t make sense to wait till retirement hence I decided to start now; saving and changing lives is what drives TNF.

“This is a lifetime project so the earlier I start the TNF starts he better; I don’t believe TNF will be a distraction but rather a motivation and will only propel me to be the best I can be on and off the field. I have made a commitment and will balance the two accordingly.

TNF was launched three years ago, and Simy said he was happy that so many persons have been touched and he is encouraged to do more: “The objective of setting up TNF is to create a unique platform to engage and empower underprivileged youths, saving and changing lives through health, education and Sports   and this is what I called the TNF’s HES strategy.

“My definition of charity is the practice of being benevolent, giving and sharing with the less fortunate and you can be rest assured that 100 percent of all we will do is to be a charitable organization.

“We set up officially in October 2016, so TNF is a pet project and during festive seasons, we embarked on charity services to the widows and orphans; we also promoted the importance of education, shared hundreds of TNF exercise books to the kids‎ and gave a couple of scholarships

“We also produced customized TNF football jerseys that were used for a tournament in my hometown; also in January 2017, we embarked on a health project of assisting a 4-month-old infant diagnosed of hydrocephalus, so I believe we have done quite well for a start.”

Cool and breezy in words and attitude, Simy admitted his mother humane disposition simply rubbed off on him and would eternally be grateful for the role she played in his upbringing.

“I always have this beautiful memory of a lovely mother who gave everything for her family going through lots of hard situations of life with my dad to take care of their children,” remarked Simy when pressed after posting a photograph with his visiting mother on his Instagram page.

“I’m just so proud; and lucky for the family that choose me because we can choose our friends but not our families.

“My mother has been my biggest support and Inspiration through her prayers; and humility; and I hope to keep getting better to keep her joy,” he said as emotions flashed across his face like the sweep of sun-rent clouds over a quiet landscape.

  • Rohr sees bright future in new Super Eagles

Super Eagles’ coach Gernot Rohr has expressed satisfaction that the team was able to discover new talents in spite of the disappointment of not playing Monday’s friendly against Burkina Faso.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Eagles were to play two friendlies but ended up playing only one against Senegal on Thursday, which ended 1-1.

Unfortunately, the scheduled second game against Burkina Faso at the same venue of The Hive in London was called off due to visa problems.

“We planned two international friendlies but could only play one. However, we were still able to do some work,” Rohr said on the Super Eagles official Twitter handle on Tuesday.

“We’ve been able to see some new players and young Nigerian talents here in the U.K, who could be part of our group in the future.”

Among the new players who were in camp with the Eagles were Chelsea’s Ola Aina, Arsenal’s Chuba Akpom, Isaac Success of Watford, and Olanrewaju Kayode of Austria Wien.

Others are the duo of Joel Bazee of Hannover 96 and Tyronne Ebuehi of ADO Den Haag.

Rohr also revealed that he would return to Nigeria soon to scout for more players.

“I will be back in Lagos next week to watch some Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) games and see some of our home stars in action as we continue to plan ahead.”
