  • Navy hands over two suspected vandals, to NSCDC

Operatives of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT yesterday handed over two suspected pipeline vandals and 53 fuel-laden jerry cans to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Suleiman Ismail, 38, and Kingsley Imaeto, 40 were arrested by operatives attached to Operation AWATSE, the anti-vandals/militants taskforce combing Lagos-Ogun creeks.

According to the Commander NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Maurice Eno, the suspects were apprehended at Imagbon in Ogun State.

Handing over the suspects and exhibits to the NSCDC Area Commander, Lagos Central, Assistant Commandant Padonu Augustine, Eno said: “The 76km stretch of pipeline running from Atlas Cove to Mosimi Depot was shut down for 11 months due to severe acts of vandalism on the lines. This was to allow total refurbishment of the lines which cost the Federal Government billions of Naira.

“The maintenance of the lines was completed early this year and pumping of products to Mosimi commenced on March 21.

“However, at about 3am on March 27, a private security outfit, Topline Leighton Limited, engaged for security and maintenance of the pipeline, in conjunction with personnel of Operation AWATSE arrested two suspects in Ogun.

“They were arrested with 53 Jerry cans of 50 litres each of PMS suspected to have been siphoned from the pipelines. The products were being conveyed in four vehicles as at the time of the arrest.

“The vehicles used for the illegal act were Toyota Sienna marked LSR142BH, Volkswagen Bus with registration number KRD151XM, Mazda Bus- XU138EPE and Toyota Camry marked VL03APP.

“Some of the vandals on sighting the security men, fled the scene.”

Eno assured the public that security forces would continue to arrest those involved in pipeline vandalism and oil theft, warning the perpetrators to desist from such acts.

“We should note that criminals involved in pipeline vandalism are sometimes involved in kidnappings, bank robberies and other nefarious activities,” said Eno.

Men of the Edo State Police Command have arrested the suspected killer of the Chief Imam of Egbeta Mosque in Ovia North East Local Government, Mallam Saka Afolabi.

He was killed on March 4 in the presence of his three children by three gunmen while on his way to farm.

The suspected killer is Ajetena Adebayo Moruf.

Parading the suspect yesterday, Police Commissioner Haliru Gwandu said: “We combed five states before the suspect was arrested.”

He said two other suspects were at large.

    Gwandu urged criminals to change.

He said: “The principal suspect in the killing of the chief imam of Egbeta Mosque has been arrested. Three people killed the cleric. Others are on the run. The deceased’s sons witnessed the killing.

“After the incident, the suspect went into hiding. We combed more than five states before we nabbed him. We trailed him to Shagamu in Ogun State.”

  • Four die as suspected terrorist strike near UK Parliament

Four die as suspected terrorist strike near UK Parliament

Four people, including an armed police officer and a man believed to be the attacker, died yesterday in a terrorist incident near the United Kingdom’s (UK’s) Houses of Parliament, Scotland Yard confirmed last night.

One of the victims was among several pedestrians hit by a car on Westminster Bridge, before it crashed.

An officer protecting the Parliament was stabbed by an attacker, who was shot by the police.

At least 20 people were injured, including three other officers.

Acting Deputy Commissioner and head of counter terrorism at the Metropolitan Police, Mark Rowley, said a major terrorist investigation was under way.

He said the attack started shortly before 15:00 GMT when the four-wheel vehicle was driven over Westminster Bridge, hitting and injuring a number of members of the public and the three police officers, who were on their way back from a commendation ceremony.

Mr. Rowley said after the car crashed an ‘Asian’ knifeman “continued the attack and tried to enter Parliament”.

Witnesses say there was what appeared to be a warning shout and then the crack of three or four shots before the attacker fell to the floor.

Foreign Office minister Tobias Ellwood – a former Army officer, whose brother died in the Bali terrorist bombing in 2002 – attempted mouth-to-mouth resuscitation of an injured police officer.

Prime Minister Theresa May was scheduled to chair a meeting of the government’s emergency Cobra committee later.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, a Downing Street spokesman said: “The thoughts of the PM and the government are with those killed and injured in this appalling incident, and with their families.”

Metropolitan Police Federation chairman Ken Marsh said: “We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the officer who has died. This incident shows the dangers our colleagues face on a daily basis.”

French Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said three French school pupils were among the injured and offered “solidarity with our British friends, and full support” for the wounded students and their families.

The Port of London Authority said a woman was pulled alive from the River Thames, near the bridge and was being treated for serious injuries.

Emergency services treated at least 20 injured people on the bridge, with one woman dead under a bus.

The ‘middle-aged’ attacker, suspected to be an Asian, was then shot by armed officers. He died while being rushed to the hospital.

An intruder, described by witnesses as ‘middle-aged and Asian’, managed to break into the grounds of the Parliament where he fatally stabbed a police officer with two knives.

The policeman died on the spot.

Another witness Jayne Wilkinson said: “We were taking photos of Big Ben and we saw all the people running towards us, and then there was an Asian guy in about his 40s carrying a knife about seven or eight inches long.

‘And then there were three shots fired, and then we crossed the road and looked over. The man was on the floor with blood.

‘He had a lightweight jacket on, dark trousers and a shirt. He was running through those gates, towards Parliament, and the police were chasing him.”

Her partner David Turner added: “There was a stampede of people running out. You saw the people and you thought ‘what the hell is going on’.”

Frazer Clarke, 25, from Burton-on-Trent, said: “We heard a loud bang and screaming and then I noticed some smoke. I thought it was a car crash.

“I looked towards the front gate and people were running, a police officer and a fellow coming to the gate with two knives.

“He was stabbing the police officer with the knives. He was wearing black tracksuit bottoms, a black of grey top and what looked like work boots. The police officer was stumbling and fell on the floor’

Pat McCormack, 21, from Washington in Tyne-on-Wear said: “I saw him stabbing the officer in the back of the head and the back of the neck.

“He was running away but then he collapsed.”

Steve Voake, 55, was walking across the Westminster Bridge and saw at least two bodies lying on the road and one in the water.

“I saw a trainer lying in the road and when I looked more closely I saw that there were a couple of bodies the other side of the road”, he told the Press Association, adding: “And when I looked over the side there was another body lying in the water with blood all around it.”

Passer’s-by action sparks fury AN attempt by a passer-by to take a ‘Selfie’in front of victims of the Westminster terror attack sparked fury yesterday

His actions caused revulsion with people saying they were ‘disgusted’

The passer-by who appeared to take photographs with a ‘selfie stick’ in front of victims of the Westminster terror attack has sparked fury.

At least four people have died when a terrorist brought carnage to central London, mowing down pedestrians on Westminster Bridge and attacking police with knives in the grounds of the Houses of Parliament.

Witnesses said the aftermath was like a scene from a ‘Hollywood disaster movie’.

But photographs of casualties lying on the ground – before they got help – and people taking selfies at the scene have caused revulsion.

Referring to the man posing for a selfie, one said: “Sir, you’re with the selfie stick, you need that shoving up your a***.”

One person said: “Unbelievable, how could someone think that it’s acceptable to do that.”

Parveen Agnihotri commented: “Shame on the people taking selfies rather than helping the injured. Seems like we’ve become a nation of uncaring self promotion.”

Kavita Cooper said: “Touched by the bravery of those that ran towards victims to offer help and support. Disgusted by those taking selfies.”

Another added: “Unbelievable! Some people disgusting! Please track this sick individual down & shame him publicly at the very least!”

One said: “What is wrong with some people man. No brains at all. Muppet.”

It followed similar outrage caused by people posing for selfies following terror attacks elsewhere.

Scotland Yard said the attack, which comes a year to the day after the terrorist atrocities in Brussels, is being treated “as a terrorist incident until we know otherwise.”

    •Four held for alleged robbery

A MAN described as a notorious kidnapper has been arrested by the police.

Solomon Chuwkudi alias King Solomon was arrested yesterday after his Okota residence was discovered to be a cell for hostages.

Chukwudi, who was on the wanted list of the police, was caught after a victim described the house to the police.

Arrested with him during an undercover operation were three other men.

Besides, Owoseni said his men arrested four suspected armed robbers at Epe, and rocovered a cut to size pistol from them.

“Information was received that the criminals were planning to attack and acting on the information, policemen went to the scene. The hoodlums upon sighting the police, started shooting and fled into the crowd, using innocent people as shields.

“To avoid hurting innocent people, our men could not fire. They abandoned three of their operational vehicles which they drove to the scene. We recovered AK47 rifle with 22 rounds of live ammunition and three magazines. Also recovered was a revolver pistol and two bottles with figurines inside.

“We believe those were the gang’s charms which they used for operations. Efforts are on to apprehend the suspects and bring them to justice.”

“We have robbed about 35 people together. We get to the ATM point by 4am. We would hide inside the shop that is not open beside the ATM point. As soon as the withdrawer collects money, we accost him or her and collect the money and escape.

“The last money we collected was N40,000. We collected N12,500 on Friday. This morning (Saturday), we wanted to collect money from a lady but she ran away. We thought she had gone, not knowing that she went to inform RRS.

“This was around 5am. They pursued us and arrested me but my partner escaped. I don’t go home. I sleep in Osankwa Hotel, Alaba Rago. It is only whenever I don’t have money that I go home. I have no wife and no child.”

  • RRS operatives arrest suspected fraudsters

    RRS operatives arrest suspected fraudsters

Men of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested a man, who is alleged to be the kingpin of a syndicate that specialises in defrauding people.

Segun Akintola, popularly known as Okadigbo, was apprehended by the RRS Decoy Team in his shrine at Ijora over his involvement in a fraud.

The syndicate duped a woman in Ikorodu last year.

Preliminary investigation conducted by RRS showed that Okadigbo is the arrow head of different syndicates of fraudsters operating in  Lagos and some parts of Ogun states.

Until his arrest, four of his accomplices earlier arrested by the operatives of RRS had given him out as their ring–leader.

The operatives were reported to have been on the lookout for him since last year.

Okadigbo confessed to RRS that he is a fraudster, but denied being the syndicate leader.

He told the operatives that he pretended to be an herb seller to deceive his victims.

RRS quoted him as saying: “It is true they used my shrine. They bring their victims but everybody operated on their own.

“Although, the fake dollar they use is mine but I don’t know anything about their operation. I operated by selling herbs to people looking for children. I do spiritual bath for clients and defraud them.”

A gang member, Christian Odokor, in his confessional statement said: “We robbed a woman about a year ago. We took all she had including N300,000 cash and recharge cards of all networks worth N120,000. Okadigbo is our master.

“All of us, about nine groups that I know report to him. We operated in different parts of the state. He is so powerful and fiery that no policeman dare arrest him. Now, I was shocked seeing him here with us in your custody.”

Another member of the team, Toyin Idebi, said greed made her joined the gang two years ago.

Idebi said: “I was a stylist and doing well before I joined them. I like how they were spending money on women. Initially, they were reluctant to tell me their nature of their job. They just told me they were into export and import business. Later, one of them opened up and I joined them”.

“My main job was to act as someone who was carrying foreign currencies who didn’t know her destination. Though, those currencies were fake but I didn’t know how Okadigbo got them.”

Recounting her ordeal, the victim said, Joy, said: “A woman flagged me down last Wednesday on my way to market. When I saw the woman sitting and calling passengers I never thought otherwise. Immediately I hopped in and sat down beside her. I saw three other men inside the car.

“Suddenly as we were progressing, the woman begged me to help her with my phone to make calls. She said   she had no call card on hers. She made two separate calls. As we moved on, the driver detoured to an unknown destination.

“I asked the driver where he was taken me to, he didn’t respond. Suddenly, he pulled over in the middle of the way and pointed a gun at me. The woman showed me knife. They ransacked my bag and removed the whole money with the recharge cards and sped off.”

Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmus, a Superintendent (SP), said the command will not rest on its oars until it rids the state of bad elements and reduce the criminal activities.

The suspects, she said, have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

Sources said tension escalated in the communities last week, following the clashes in which four men and one woman were killed.

The sources said victims in the Abraka incident included two cousins – Akpovona Felix and Sunday Akpupu – who were indigenes of Eku community though residents of Abraka.

Akpovona’s and Sunday’s bodies were discovered on their farms last Wednesday, the day after they went there to clear the land but did not return home. Their bodies were recovered by community scavengers on Wednesday afternoon in a bush said to be prone to herdsmen attacks.
