…as security operatives beef up security at Osun Secretariat

Members of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) on Monday, June 3, shut the gate of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in Osogbo, Osun state, and barricaded the entrance to the control centre to ensure compliance with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) strike directive.

The Nation observed that the compliance team, led by the chairman of the Lagos Generation and Transmission Council, Comrade Musibau Okunloye, arrived at the TCN gate on Ikirun Road, Osogbo, around 8 AM to enforce the NLC’s directive.

The team used a white private car to block the road even after closing the gate. Speaking with newsmen, Comrade Okunloye confirmed that no worker was inside the TCN premises.

According to him, “No worker is inside the offices, we have withdrawn them from service because of a directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress due to those issues that we are agitating for.

“The minimum wage and the hike in electricity tariff, are the two major issues and these two issues concern the generality of Nigerians, not only workers.

“See this tariff hike in electricity, it is too bad. There is nowhere in the world where you will see the industry and ordinary commercial and the residents increasing the same tariff.

“My appeal to the Federal government is to listen to labour and agree with them. Labour is forced to be reckoned with. But in Nigeria today, we are seeing labour, they are nothing. So they should consider labour first in any policy that they have now.”

Similarly, the gate of the Osun State Government Secretariat, Abere was shut as security operatives including, Operatives of the Nigerian Police and Civil Defence Corps manned the entrance with guns.

Workers who are on special duties are denied the opportunity to enter to resume their duty posts.

TCN restores supply to North East May 27

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has vowed to restore electricity supply to the North East on May 27, 2024.

This was contained in statement by its Public Affairs, General Manager, Ndidi Mbah in Abuja.

According to her, the company is working hard to erect four new transmission towers along the Jos-Gombe axis.

TCN noted that the erection of the towers is to enable the restoration of power supply to states in the North East following an earlier destructive attack on four transmission towers by vandals.

According to TCN, the tower collapse affected Gombe, Damaturu, Maiduguri, Yola, Bauchi and Jalingo.

The statement noted that immediately after the incident however, TCN engineers worked first to redistribute available bulk supply on the Jos – Bauchi – Gombe 132kV line between Jos and Yola Discos while work commenced immediately at reconstructing the four vandalised towers.

Continuing , TCN said: “Presently, we are rebuilding the four towers simultaneously. Progress is evident, with one tower nearing 80% completion, another at 60%, a third at 30%, and dismantling work finished on the fourth tower. Additionally, tower members are being fabricated and assembled on-site to expedite construction. We are committed to a quick restoration of bulk power on the line route.”

The company also noted that construction work on the Jos – Gombe transmission line, taking supply up to Damaturu and environs will be completed and energised by May 20 while the  Damaturu – Maiduguri axis will be completed on May 27.

Expectedly, bulk power transmission would be fully restored on the affected 330kV transmission line by the 27th of May, Yola and Jos DisCos would also be able to offtake and distribute optimally from TCN substations.

For now, said TCN, only 38MW is wheeled to both Jos and Yola Distribution companies, with each receiving 19MW each. Efforts to take some of the available power to Jalingo was hampered by very high voltage on the line, which could cause a system disturbance.

The statement said: “TCN is aware of the inconveniences resulting from the current inadequate power supply through Yola and Jos DisCos to electricity customers in the affected states, and pledges to earnestly expedite work on the towers, to ensure that the towers are completed within the time frame indicated. Pease bear with us.”

Public Affairs, General Manager, Ndidi Mbah made this known in a statement.

She said, “The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) hereby states that it will commence the erection of two number 132kV transmission towers at its Amukpe Transmission Substation and will equally restring a portion of the Benin-Delta and Delta-Oghara 132kV double circuit transmission lines, from tomorrow, Saturday, May 4th to 17th, 2024.”

According to her, consequently, Amukpe Substation will be out for the duration of the work.

She added that bulk power supply to Benin DisCo through the following feeders: the Adeje, Industrial, Woodland, Mosogar, Sapele (Sapele) and Abraka feeders will be out of bulk power supply for the period.

The spokesperson noted that the outage is necessary to create a safe working environment for the contractor. Completion of the projects will put in place N-1 redundancy that would enable TCN supply bulk electricity to the substation from either the Benin or Ughelli transmission line.

Mbah said this means that when one transmission line is faulty, bulk electricity can still be received in the substation from the second line.

She said TCN apologises for the inconvenience electricity consumers supplied from the substation will experience within the period, but notes that the projects will help ensure a more flexible and consistent bulk power supply through the Amukpe Transmission Substation.

Mbah added that there is no doubt there is room for improvement, and TCN will continue to work hard to further reduce the number of grid disturbances to the barest minimum.
