Vandals destroy Gwagwalada-Katampe transmission line, says TCN

The Transmission Company Nigeria (TCN) on Wednesday, February 28, said vandals have destroyed tower 70 along its 330kV Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission line.

General Manager, Ndidi Mbah, who made this known in a statement, said the incident occurred at 11.32 pm on February 26.

The statement said: “The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) hereby states that Tower 70 along its 330kV Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission line has been vandalised with the tower standing precariously on the ground.

“The sad incident occurred on the 26th of February, 2024, at about 11.32 pm.  At the said time, the Gwagwalada – Katampe Transmission line tripped at Gwagwalada Transmission Substation, and trial reclosure by TCN Operators failed, necessitating a physical patrol of the line.

TCN announces seven-hour blackout in Abuja

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said that there would be seven-hour power outage on Saturday and Sunday in some areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This was revealed in a statement by the TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, on Saturday, February 24.

She said: “The Transmission Company of Nigeria wishes to inform the public that its maintenance crew will carry out planned preventive maintenance on its 132/33kV 2X100MVA power Transformers in Apo Transmission Substation.”

The maintenance is slated for Saturday and Sunday, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day.

“Consequently, there will be power interruption through both transformers and Abuja DisCo will be unable to offtake power from the two transformers for distribution to its customers,” the statement added.

TCN supplies 2,686.135Mw to 11 DisCos

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) yesterday said it restored the partially collapsed grid, sending out 64,467.24MWH an average of 2,686.135W to the 11 electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) on Sunday.

Besides, the TCN also noted that the total energy generated on the day under review was 65,604.49MWH, an average of 2,733.52Mw.

Meanwhile, yesterday (Monday) a document The Nation obtained from the TCN indicated that it sent out 2,651MW to the 11 DisCos at 4:38pm.

Owing to the low energy generation on Sunday, about four DisCos got zero energy allocation from the TCN.

The company’s Public Affairs, General Manager, Ndidi Mbah issues a press statement at 9:26pm on Sunday describing the situation as a “partial system disturbance.”

The statement blamed the matter on lingering gas supply constraint.

Her statement noted that the grid had been fully restored.

The statement reads in part: “The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN hereby states that the grid experienced a partial disturbance at about 11:21Hours today with Ibom power islanded, feeding Eket, Ekim, Itu & Uyo transmission substations, during the period of partial disturbance. TCN initiated immediate restoration of the affected part of the grid, and presently, the grid is fully restored.

“Prior to the incident, total generation on the grid was 3,901.25 MW at 08:00Hours, a little over three hours before time of partial collapse. It is important to note that low power generation has persisted since January 2024, to date, exacerbating daily due to the lingering gas constraint.

“According to the National Control Center (NCC), the Internet of Things (IoT) revealed that just before the partial disturbance, which occurred at 11:21Hrs today, Sapele Steam & Egbin Substations lost a total of 29.32MW & 343.84MW at 11:20:14Hrs & 11:20:17Hrs respectively, totalling 373.16MW. “This, combined with the current low power generation due to gas constraints, caused the imbalance leading to the partial system disturbance.

“Gas constraints continue to impact grid flexibility and stability. Ensuring sufficient gas supply to power generating stations is crucial for grid stability as sufficient generation allows for better grid management in the event of sudden generation losses like this. TCN will investigate the cause of tripping of Sapele Steam & Egbin power generating units.”

TCN to boost power transmission with 10 new substations

Electricity transmission in the Lagos Region will get a massive improvement before the Yuletide as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Lagos Region, comprising of Lagos and Ogun states, is set to add 10 new substations currently at the closing stages of construction into its operations.

The general manager of TCN Lagos Region, Mojeed Akintola, made this known yesterday during a tour of ongoing projects of the TCN in Lagos. He assured that 25 other transmission projects were ongoing within the region which will ultimately raise the bar in transmission of electricity once completed.

According to Akintola, around the Yaba axis of the company, 100MVA and 132/33KV and 33kva has been completed and ready for commissioning. In Alimosho area, Akintola explained that three voltage transformers has been installed on the secondary T3-100MVA 132/133kv transformer, amongst others.

“The implication of this is that more electricity can be supplied for transmission to Nigerians. We are ready to up the ante in the sector,” Akintola said.

He however regretted that the TCN’s operations has majorly been affected by the activities on vandals on its equipments. This, he further explained, made the firm to instal closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in its 39 substations in the Lagos zone due to the persistent vandalism of its equipment.

“We are collaborating with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence and other security agencies to check the vandals.

“Transmission Company is also partnering with the local chiefs and kings to help in taming this trend. Definitely, we can’t do it alone without the help of communities where these installations are based,”

“We have met a number of companies that buy the vandalised equipment. “We asked them to work with us to stop the menace, and the responses of some of them have been positive,” Akintola said.

How residents stalled multi-billion naira 21 power projects in Southeast – TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has lamented the strangulation of 21 power projects in the Southeast since 2019, blaming it on activities of residents.

This is just as the company has raised the alarm over indiscriminate buildings under TCN high voltage cables and on its Right of Ways in the region.

Addressing a press conference in Enugu, the General Manager (Transmission), Enugu Region, Engr. Emmanuel Akpa, disclosed that the projects, awarded since 2019 and aimed at boosting power supply within the region, are located in Arochukwu, Okigwe, Nnewi, Enugu, Nsukka, Orlu, 9th Mile, Nike, among others.

He stated that while such projects had since been completed in other parts of the country, those awarded in the Southeast region had suffered sabotage and litigations from the residents, even when the Federal Government had paid the necessary compensations to land owners.

“This is very disturbing because these contracts have been completed in other zones. These contracts were awarded to take the 132KVA to some places to boost economic activities since 2009. There are power stations where work has been abandoned due to litigation and contest over land.

“These projects were conceived to galvanise business in those areas. Government paid for the way lift but from then till now, the projects have not been completed because of selfish demands of our people. Even the ones built are now being vandalised.

“The 21 projects have been abandoned in the Southeast. They are abandoned because of litigation. Certain projects of the Federal Government are being killed by some Igbo people for their selfish interests, and this is affecting the setting up of substations in the region,” he said

He appealed to Southeast residents to develop a positive attitude towards power projects for the economic expansion of the region.

Akpa stated that the company is facing other challenges in the region, such as buildings on the TCN right of ways; illegal excavation of soil around the tower base, especially in areas like New Artisan Market, Goshen Estate and Centenary Avenue, within the state metropolis.
