    Tecno unveils full display smartphone

TECNO, a premier mobile phone brand under Transsion Holdings, has released its first frameless full-screen display smartphone – TECNO CAMON CM. The device is the latest in the CAMON Series family and reemphasises the brand’s knack for designing high-end smartphones with sophisticated cameras.

While chronicling the brand’s growth and sheer market dominance, its Brand Manager Eric Liu, highlighted the company’s efforts to make revolutionary smartphones that will usher smartphone enthusiasts into an era of endless possibilities on the mobile devices and exceptional photography experiences. “The smartphone has been reinvented and OEMs globally are always on the lookout for the next big thing to talk about. At TECNO, we take pride in our ability to understand and meet our consumers’ needs, and eventually surpass their expectations.”

With the CAMON CM, TECNO has delivered a very stylish full-screen display smartphone. The fullview display device produces an immersive experience when consuming videos, reading books, capturing images or even surfing the Internet. The frameless device simplifies multi-tasking and offers users an opportunity to split their screen (18:9 screen support single window 1:1 split-screen operating with only one step ), so that they can handle more than one task while still being able to see more on either of the split windows.

Though it is a common belief that full-view display screens are more susceptible to damage. However, on the CAMON CM, that idea has been negotiated with a 2.5D corning third glass, which does not only ensure that users enjoy better visual effects from the screen but also safeguards it from cracks and delivers smoother touching.

“In accordance to consumers’ preferences, we are gradually becoming camera driven and this trend is evident in the camera-centric designs of our smartphones. Adopting our strategy of ‘think globally, act locally’, we are able to understand our consumers’ preferences and provide them with every support necessary to ensure that they canexpress themselves wholeheartedly” Eric added.

Speaking about the exclusive sales and partnership with TECNO Mobile, the Managing Director of 3C Hub Mr. Xia Song stated: “We are excited about our partnership with TECNO and the opportunity to launch the CAMON CM with them. As always, we always strive to deliver superior smartphone retail services to end-users thus, signing an exclusive partnership for the launch of the CAMON CM is a big deal for us.”

Selfies have just gotten a jig with the CAMON CM’s 13MP front camera module that delivers exceptional HDR portrait with night shot algorithm that lifts weak light, reduces noise in single frame and captures clearer night shots. Users can adjust the super bright flash of the front camera by pressing the screen to introduce just the right amount of light required to produce a stunning photo.

Similarly, the rear camera dons the same camera rating and its 4-LED ring flash is optimized to fill light till it reaches a more balanced light filling before producing any shot.

With 3 colors of city blue, midnight black and champagne gold, booking of the CAMON CM will run from January 10 – 14while, first sales will follow between January 15 – 20 at 8 selected 3C Hubs across the country. Phantom 8: Tecno’s new flagship challenges competitors

The fast-rising global manufacturer of smartphone, Tecno Mobile, has unveiled a new brand, Tecno Phantom 8. At the unveiling at Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Dubai, were ace actor Odunlade Adekola and popular tech You-tuber Eric Okafor, OLUFEMI BABALOGBON reports.

The device has 20 megapixels front and back cameras with 12 megapixel and 13 megapixels configurations. While reviewing  the phone with this writer, Eric Okafor, who is the founder of howtotechnaija.com, said “the refocus camera feature on Phantom 8 is a conversation starter. “My friends on social media suddenly aren’t shy to ask if I used a phone or an actual camera to take amazing portrait shots. Everyone wants to look good and that’s what Phantom 8 offers,”he said.

Ace Nollywood actor Odunlade Adekola explained the optical power of the product from the perspective of a film producer. “The technology behind it is so wonderful. From the camera point of view, the refocusing part of the camera is beyond imagination and the battery is very strong,” he said.

The dual-lens back camera enables the phone to achieve depth of field as identified by Adekola.  The main camera is a 12 megapixel SONY IMX386 sensor with f/1.8 lens and improved low light photography. Other features, which complement the power of the camera, include a TRI LED flash, 10X Zoom, Autofocus, portrait mode (refocus), Auto HDR, Night mode, Superpixel and smart filters.

The portrait mode is found in the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. In the iPhone 8 Plus, the Portrait Mode is embedded with Portrait Lighting, which uses the camera sensors to light the subject’s face in real time. Both Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and iPhone 8 have the dual camera feature.

Techno Phantom 8 does not only match Samsung’s and Apple’s flagships in terms of camera technology, it also boasts of 6GB RAM, and 64GB storage. These are same specifications with Samsung Galaxy Note 8. However, Apple  offers 64GB as standard storage, with up to 256GB scalable storage without the need for MicroSD. That is currently unbeatable.

Tecno Phantom 8 promises to offer the best experience in photography and design. The product couples form and functionality; presented in a slimmer and lighter metal rounded-edges frame. As a luxury product, it has a 3D diamond design at the back. The device has an appealing aesthetics and architecture. Obviously the consumers were  expecting Phantom 7, but the company said it tasked its’ engineers to double up and produce Phantom 8. Reviewers said it is a bid to keep pace with  Samsung’s and Apple’s previously launched Galaxy Note 8 and iPhone 8, respectively.

Tecno Phantom 8 is targeted at upper-middle class. It comes in Champagne old, Galaxy Blue and Phantom Black. Tecno mobile is known for spotting global trends and producing local-driven solutions. The brand, with competitive presence in India, the Middlle East and Africa, has kept its market share on a positive gradient.

Although an Africa and Middle-East brand, Tecno’s strategy of “think globally, but act locally”, positions it in the same niche with Apple and Samsung. Techno Mobile engages idea thinking and native intelligence in a bid to beat competition in its territories.

  • Judges sack Ramar254 from Tecno Own the Stage

Judges sack Ramar254 from Tecno Own the Stage

As performances hot up in the race for a $25,000 star prize, in addition to a recording deal, and a brand new TECNO Phantom 5 smartphone in the ongoing Tecno Own the Stage reality show, Kenyan participant, Ramar254, was kicked out of the show, which entered its 10th edition last Sunday, just as Nigeria’s flag-bearer, Shaapera was applauded by the judges for a spectacular performance.

It was the third consecutive time that a Kenyan was evicted from the show, which now has four contestants in battle for the coveted prize and the attendant fame.

The last edition started off with host of the show, Vimbai Mutinhiri, announcing that the contestants were going to be doing songs originally performed by the judges – Nigerian Rap star, M.I., Yemi Alade and Bien-Aimé Baraza, of Sauti Sol, a Kenyan afro-pop band formed in 2005. This was an interesting curved-ball following through from last week’s epic battles where the contestants were paired in groups and had to square up against each other.

The show featured guest artiste, Falz the Bad Guy, who provided a beautiful rendition of his hit single, Karishika. Falz’s electrifying performance helped to lighten the mood in the studio as the contestants geared up for their own performances.

First up was Nandy, the beautiful songstress from Tanzania, who sang Nishike by Sauti Sol, who were 2014 winners of MTV Europe Music Award for Best African Act. At the end of her performance, Bien, Sauti Sol’s lead singer, explained the meaning of the song’s Swahili title which, literally translated, meant ‘touch me’. He praised Nandy for her good delivery but faulted her inability to bring to life the song’s sexiness despite the fact that the Tanzanian, in Bien’s words, was “a very sexy girl.”

Ramar254 was next, performing another Sauti Sol single, Money Lover. But he got a stern reprimand from Bien for missing his lines during his performance. Providing a humorous twist, M.I came to the Kenyan’s rescue by heaping all the blame on Bien. He said: “I don’t know who wrote that song. I don’t know what group sang that song but that was a terrible piece of music.”

It was thereafter the turn of Nigeria’s flag-bearer, Shaapera’s to take to the stage with her rendition of Ms Alade’s Johnny. And it was a performance to behold by the Nigerian who, unknown to the audience, had earlier been involved in an accident and was only given the green light hours before the episode was shot. The revelation made her feat all the more spectacular and she expectedly earned the judges’ adoration, with Bien scoring her a perfect 10 from 10.

The charming Kenyan, Sikin, was up next to perform another song from Ms Alade’s collection, K.I.S.S.I.N.G. It was a worthy presentation as she earned some commendation from Yemi Alade for her effort. She was also cautioned against flouting the first rule of karaoke: don’t miss your lines. It was Pascal’s turn to perform M.I.’s One Naira. It wasn’t the best the audience had seen of the affable Kenyan but it was enough to earn him some measure of praise from M.I., who nevertheless reminded Pascal that he fluffed his lines on a number of occasions. Bien, apparently still smarting from M.I.’s earlier jibe at him, praised Pascal for his good delivery of a song “he had never heard, and from an artiste he had previously never heard of.”

After that, the judges announced who would be making a departure from the show, which turned out to be Ramar254.

Still on the show is Sikin and Pascal alongside the Tanzanian, Nandy, and the Nigerian, Shaapera.

  • Mary bows out of Tecno Own the Stage

Mary bows out of Tecno Own the Stage

A member of the Kenyan quartet in the ongoing TECNO Own the Stage reality TV, Mary, has been shown the door by the judges, bringing the number of the remaining contestants to five.

Recall that only six were left standing by the time episode nine of Africa’s first televised karaoke competition went on air on Sunday, January 10. The Kenyan quartet of Pascal, Sikin, Mary and Ramar254; Shaapera the Nigerian, and Nandy from Tanzania were the last six standing. And on the day, they encountered their toughest challenge yet as they each faced off against a fellow contestant.

To this end, Mary’s dream of the $25,000 star prize in the competition was dashed, joining nine others who were early evicted from the show.

With only three songs on the playlist – Omawumi’s Bottom Belle, Nico and Vinz’s Am I wrong, and Patoranking’s Girlie O – it meant that each contestant not only had to give everything they had in their vocal cords, but also had to outshine whomsoever they got paired with.

Before the song battle began, Nigerian-based Kenyan artiste, Victoria Kimani, thrilled the audience with a rendition of one of her songs. Luckily for the contestants, they received much needed advice from Kimani who charged the contestants to “have fun and to remain focused” once they step out on the stage.

With word from the Kenyan diva, the tone was set for the evening’s opening battle between Mary and Nandy. The Kenyan was selected to perform ahead of the Tanzanian, who then stood by and watched as her fellow contestant performed Omawumi’s 2012 hit song. Thereafter it was Nandy’s turn to perform the same song at the end of which the judges – M.I., Yemi and Bien – declared the contest a draw.

The evening’s second battle was a showdown between the show’s most outstanding acts, Pascal and Shaapera, who had to separately perform Nico and Vinz’s 2013 hit song. First up was Pascal who practically brought the house down with a superb rendition of the award-winning song. But no one was expecting anything less from the affable Kenyan. And with such a performance, it was always going to be hard for anyone to replicate or surpass it. But Naija’s own Shaapera isn’t just anyone as she gave another hint of why she remains one of the frontrunners for the show’s star prize with an electrifying performance which, like Pascal’s, also had the audience and the judges excited.

The judges ran out of superlatives during their appraisal of both contestants with an excited M.I. going as far as predicting that they could likely end up competing in the TECNO Own The Stage grand finale; with co-judges Yemi and Bien nodding in agreement.

The last pair of Sikin and Ramar254 engaged in an all-Kenyan battle for supremacy with their respective rendition of Patoranking’s 2011 hit song, at the end of which Ms Kimani thrilled the audience once again before the judges announced the three contestants shortlisted for eviction – Shaapera, Mary and Ramar254. But only one had to go, which turned out to be Mary.

So for a second successive week a Kenyan drops out of the race for the TECNO Own The Stage top prize. But Ramar254, Sikin and Pascal are still in it alongside the gorgeous Tanzanian, Nandy, and the lively Nigerian, Shaapera.

And they are scheduled to make a return next week when they would be performing songs originally composed and performed by the judges.

Organisers urge fans of the show to follow the contest on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, even as the next episode comes up on the various Africa Magic channels – Africa Magic Showcase, Africa Magic Urban and Africa Magic Family this Sunday.

  • Tecno Own the Stage Karaoke Contest hits Episode 9.

The ninth episode of the Tecno Own the Stage Karaoke Contest held on Sunday 10 January. Of the original fifteen contestants that started the competition, six contestants were on ground to battle for the twenty thousand five thousand dollar prize money. As host Vimbai Mutinhiri put it, the contestants were expected to battle in a novel way; in groups of two, both would sing the same song, one after the other, and in each other’s presence.  Judge MI hit the nail on the head when he evinced his expectations from contestants, “We expect great performances, singing on key, and getting the lyrics right; as it’s a Karaoke contest.”

Tanzanian Nandy, and Mary from Kenya performed Omawumi’s Bottom Belle. Nandy gave a danceable rendition of the song, unfortunately forgetting her lines halfway through the song though she managed to redeem herself later on. Mary’s performance was more soulful, and sassy, although she also missed some of her lines singing the chorus. Could it have been because both do not understand Nigerian Pidgin English? At the end, the judges unanimously decided that it was a draw, as MI put it, “I think for me that you guys had the same performance, the same mistakes, but  the same fight to come back”.

The next bout had Shapeera from Nigeria, and Pascal from Kenya performing Nico Evince’s Am I Wrong? Pascal gave a good account of himself with his charismatic rendition of the song, and had the judges and audience on their feet in tune with his performance. And as Vimbai put it, “Pascal brought the house down with his performance.”  Shapeera also did not disappoint, her adrenaline charged performance had the audience, and judges eating out of her hand, rocking to the beat. At the end, judge MI admitted that their performance looked like the final stage of the contest. Speaking further he opined, “They were so good that it would be hard to choose, as they both played to their strengths, and took it all the way. Although Shapeera was a point below Pascal because she didn’t quite get her lyrics perfectly. But if there is perfection in this show, I think you guys have it.”

The final bout had Sikin from Kenya, and Ramar 254 perform Patoranking’s Girly O. Sikin brought a ragga vibe to her performance; appropriately winding to the song. Ramar 234 also gave a good account of himself, with his swagger filled performance. As judge Yemi put it, “Ramar killed the song”. The judges agreed that it was a draw, although Sikin had an edge over Ramar because she got her lyrics on point.

The queen of the East herself; Victoria Kimani was on hand to show the contestants how it was done,  performing her Sweet Chocolate andBooty Bounce as the opening and closing acts of the evening. At the end Mary was evicted from the contest, leaving the last five contestants standing; Shapeera, Ramar 254, Sikin, Pascal, and Nandy. Next episode, the contestants will be performing songs composed and performed by the judges.

  • A TOUCH OF XMAS ON TECNO OWN THE STAGE 7

A TOUCH OF XMAS ON TECNO OWN THE STAGE 7

THE seventh episode of TECNO Own the Stage, Africa’s first televised karaoke competition which held last Sunday, had all the excitement and fanfare associated with a Christmas edition.

The edition featured former BBA winner, Vimbai Mutinhiri co-hosting alongside another BBA winner and host of Jara, Uti Nwachukwu.

It turned out to be a surprise package, as none of the contestants was evicted. Thanks to the show’s judges; Bien, Yemi Alade and M.I who decided to make Christmas merry for them all.

But there was a warning signal; and that went to four of the contestants, including Nandy, Yubu, Ramar254 and Mary who were shortlisted for eviction but had to be pardoned by the judges.

They will have to up their game in the race for the $25,000 star prize.

Sikin’s performance of ‘Santa Baby’, a song originally sung by Eartha Kitt back in 1953 was thrilling, making an enthralled M.I. to describe the Kenyan’s performance as “smouldering hot and beautiful.”

This was followed by another fabulous performance by Pascal, who sang ‘Mistletoe’. At the end of the performance, Bien described Pascal’s rendition of Justin Bieber’s 2011 hit as the Kenyan’s “first true performance” of the contest.

Next up was Tosin, who performed ‘Drummer Boy’. And for the first time in a long while, she received plaudits from Yemi Alade who had over the past couple of episodes been unimpressed with the Nigerian.

For Mary and Yubu, it wasn’t much of a great night. The judges were left unimpressed by Mary’s rendition of ‘Silent Night’ and Yubu for the first time since the commencement of the karaoke contest failed to hit the bull’s eye with the judges.

Zooccu’s rendition of the classic White Christmas was nothing like the best she could give, but she still impressed the judges with the efforts. Shaapera stole the night with her rendition of ‘We Three Kings of Orient are’, a song written as far back ago as 1857 by Rev. John Henry Hopkins.

The Nigerian’s act was followed up by a somewhat suppressed performance by Ramar254, who attempted to own the stage with his rendition of ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’, a song first recorded by Judy Garland in 1944 and made popular 13 years later by the legendary Frank Sinatra.

The last contestant to take to the stage was Nandy, who nervously performed Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas’. And just like her fellow Tanzanian, Zooccu, it was also Nandy’s first time of performing a Christmas song.

The conversation continues on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, as next episode is broadcast this Sunday on the various Africa Magic channels and on Masha Magic East.

  • SURPRISES ON EPISODE SIX OF TECNO OWN THE STAGE

SURPRISES ON EPISODE SIX OF TECNO OWN THE STAGE

WITH four contestants out and two expecting to be ousted at the end of the show, show-host, Uti Nwachukwu’s surprises on the sixth episode of Africa’s first televised karaoke competition were well worth it. At least, the surprises doused the tension a bit.

The sixth episode of TECNO Own the Stage, was aired on Sunday, 20th December. The first surprise for the audience was Uti’s introduction of model and television personality, Vimbai Mutinhiri, as his co-host. Former BBA housemate and star gist presenter, Vimbai who was rocking a chic Lanre Dasilva couture, is no stranger to co-hosting as she performed with IK at the inaugural AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards in Lagos. The appearance of the dazzling 28-year-old Zimbabwean attracted a loud ovation.

After the first surprise came the revelation of the theme of the day’s show: love and heartbreak.

The remarkable improvement of the contestants was attributed to the training they got from three of Africa’s foremost songwriters  AY, Anto Neo Soul and ID Cabasa.

With the judges  Bien, Yemi and M.I.  expected to eliminate two contestants at the end of the show, the remaining 11 contestants came in strong and poised to impress and remain in contention for the $25,000 star prize.

So when the first performer of the day, Kenyan Ramar254 came on stage to perform KC’s ‘I’m missing you, it was full of everything showmanship and good voice. Coming immediately after was Zoccu, who sang Alicia Keys’ ‘Falling’, a song that seemed like it was personally dedicated to M.I. going by the way the Tanzanian kept pointing in the direction of the judge, and his animated reaction whenever she did. At the end of Zoccu’s performance, she received the praise of all three judges, in particular M.I., who also complimented the Tanzanian on the way she looked gorgeous in her black dress.

Nandy wowed the audience as she performed Adele’s ‘Rolling in the deep’. Even the judges ran out of superlatives in describing her performance. “I have a feeling that you have been preparing for the competition all your life in front of a mirror,” Bien was compelled to say after Nandy’s performance extraordinaire.

Shaapera’s performance of Asa’s’Bi ban ke’ impressed Yemi Alade that she bragged about being the one who selected Shaapera for the show at the end of the Nigerian auditions. That was in reaction to Bien’s earlier boast that all five Kenyans he had picked from the auditions in Kenya were still in contention for the $25,000 grand prize.

Jeff (Tanzania), Mary (Tanzania), Tosin (Nigeria), Yubu (Kenya), Gazby (Nigeria), Sikin (Kenya) and Pascal (Kenya) also performed in Sunday’s enigmatic show at the end of which Gazby, Tosin, Jeff and Ramar254 were thereafter shortlisted by the judges for eviction.

But only two had to leave and the unfortunate duo turned out to be Jeff and Gazby.
